The Ararat Hills are a prime location to take advantage of this growing leisure activity and competitive sport. The development of the Ararat Hills Mountain Bike Trail will help position Ararat as a destination for off road cycling while taking advantage of the scenic and environmental values. Ararat is well placed as the last stop on the Melbourne to Ararat train line. The city is strategically located at an important junction of several major highways serving as the gateway to Grampians National Park, and the Grampians Pyrenees wine regions. An extensive network of formal and informal trails has been scoped and Parks Victoria are working with Council and the Mountain Bike club to improve off road cycling opportunities and management of trails. The Grampians Region Cycling and Trails Master Plan is currently in progress with the support of Regional Development Victoria, Transport Victoria, Regional Tourism and 11 Local Governments. It will identify cycling opportunities across the region and provide business cases for projects like the Ararat Hills. The Victorian Trails Strategy 2014- 15 says there is a strong role for trail-based tourism to ensure the benefits of visitor spend are spread into regional Victoria. Ararat has identified multiple health benefits for the Community in the‘Ararat on the Move Active Transport and Lifestyle Strategy’ and together with the community and Parks Victoria wish to further develop and improve the network of trails for the community, visitors and events. Ararat Hills Trails

Mountain bikers are a lucrative demographic target for tourism and economic growth. The Ararat Hills are a prime location to take advantage of this growing leisure activity and competitive sport.

The development of the Ararat Hills Mountain Bike Trail will help position Ararat as a destination for off road cycling while taking advantage of the scenic and environmental values.

A concept design and business case is currently under development and funding will be required for construction.

• Trail head facilities $650,000

• Design Development $160,000

• Trail Construction, - $800,000

• Environmental Rehabilitation $200,000

• Cycling & Walking Linkages to town - $200,000

• Directional signage, $40,000

• Trail promotion and Marketing - $50,000

The funding to assist with the design and development of the Ararat Hills Mountain Bike Trails has the ability to bring to strengthen visitor experience and livability of regional Victoria
