that will be celebrating its

68th year anniversary on 20

November 2012 and one of

15 squadrons in District 8.

On 11 February 1957 the

USPS Governing Board

approved the division of

D/8. Then, 13 April, D/8’s Spring Conference met in Fort

Lauderdale to give their seal of approval. C/C William Wolfmul-

ler, N, V/C Lester Lowe, JN and V/C Edward Sutton, N, were

present to observe and assist in this action—the first time any

district had been divided into three districts. District 8—

Southeast, District 23—Northeast and District 22—West

(Florida). D/8’s first commander was installed 9 October 1939.

In those days DC’s were a “Rear Commander” not a “District

Commander”. District 8 information was provided by

District Commander, Gary Ferguson, JN

When change is good we follow through. In 2000 our squadron

name was changed from Palm Beach Power Squadron Palm to

Beach Sail and Power Squadron. USPS thought it was impor-

tant to recognize our sailing members. Six squadrons in D/8

have added “Sail” to their squadron name.

We strive to meet the goals set by USPS to promote recrea-

tional boating safety through our ABC classes. Our squadron

offers this public course once a month—twelve times a year. Dur-

ing the past 12 months 151 students passed our ABC course.

These classes are instrumental in increasing our membership.

Currently we have 325 members. Under the leadership of our

SEO, Lt/C (P/C) Rose Moskowitz, JN, our members have the op-

portunity of going on to learn more through our advanced grade

courses, elective courses, seminars, and, soon to be On Water

Training (OWT). What a great opportunity for you—take advan-

tage of these offerings.

There are many committees you may wish to serve on such

as: safety, vessel safety check, legislation, newsletter, boating

activities, education or cooperative charting. We are a volunteer

organization and welcome new ideas and initiatives. Your in-

volvement in squadron education and activities will provide you

with a much more fulfilling membership.

Volunteering in Cooperative Charting, under the leadership

of Lt Scott Clinton, SN, can be fun while boating on the water

and helping the National Ocean Service keep our nautical

charts accurate by reporting chart corrections. Interested? Let

Scott know. Free Vessel Safety Checks under the leadership of

Lt Ed Hoover, AP, and his current VSC examiners P/R/C Bill

Eldridge, SN, and Lt John Worssam, P, may be of interest to

you. If so, contact Ed, Bill or John for more information.

Would you like to volunteer as Membership Chairman? We

need someone in this position. You and your committee review

and process the membership applications prior to submitting

them to the squadron executive committee for approval. The key

is in the timing and expeditious processing of the required pa-

perwork. After that, membership responsibility passes to the

Member Involvement Committee for getting new members in-

volved in squadron activities. If interested, call me (the informa-

tion is in your Roster).

We have a wonderful social agenda which features weekly

lunches at Duffy’s (Oakbrook Square) and monthly dinner meet-

ings at the Evergrene Club with interesting speakers. In addi-

tion we have raft-ups, rendezvous, nose-ups (tides permitting),

weekend excursions, picnics and many other activities. If you do

not presently own a boat you are invited to hitch a ride with one

of our members. You will find a calendar of events in your

monthly edition of our award winning newsletter, The Afterdeck

News®.

Can we do more? You bet! But I think we should pat ourselves

on the back for all that we do and use that as motivator to do

more and new programs. There are no bounds for all the poten-

tial within Palm Beach Sail & Power Squadron.

Congratulations to all the instructors for the countless hours of

dedication preparing the course lesson plans and making possible the

great passing success rates. Also my congratulation goes to all those

students that . . . Kept our Educational torch lit..!

I am happy to report that 2011/2012 was a busy year for our

Educational Department. As the season is about to come to an end, I wish

to express how fortunate we at PBS&PS are to be surrounded by a cadre

of dedicated, enthusiastic, dynamic educators. Thanks to each one of

them we have successfully accomplished our education mission this year.

We have offered and taught every advanced grade course, every elective

course and a number of seminars.

Every month we continue to offer our excellent ABC boating program

and teach the art of seamanship and safe boating techniques to the

general public at large under the tutelage of the most able P/R/C Bill

Eldridge, SN, and Lt Bill Flanders. For 2011-2012, 151 students

participated and satisfactorily completed our program.

New this year, we have qualified 5 seasoned members as trainers for

our upcoming Boat Operator Certification (BOC) and On-Water-Training

(OWT) programs. In addition, we offered a community outreach program

of two seminars to the residents of Oak Harbor at Juno Beach taught by

John Litwinka, S. We also entered and displayed an anchoring teaching

aid designed by XO Richard Wood, JN, at the National Conference in

Jacksonville.

The education department worked collaboratively with the Administra-

tive Officer in offering a new member BBQ at Anchorage Park to welcome

them to PBS&PS (See photos on pages 3, 5, 11 and back cover.) in order that

they become familiar with all the courses and programs offered through

our organization as well as sample our friendship and camaraderie.

PLEASE VERIFY YOUR ROSTER CONTENT IS UP-TO-DATE It is that time of year again when every member needs to verify that their contact information (email address, phone, mailing address, spouse information, etc) is up-to-date in the National Roster. This information is the main source of information for the Squadron, District, and National Rosters. Later this year PBS&PS will be preparing the latest version of our own Roster and it is up to each member to ensure their information is cur-rent as no one knows your information like you do. :-) Please verify your own information by using last year's Roster and/or the national website and letting Cheryl Eisenhardt know of any updates . Also, if you change any part of your contact information throughout the year in between roster printings (including tempo-rary changes like Northern summer address change-over and return dates!), you will need to contact Cheryl about that so we can send you all of the latest news. There is not an automatic way for anyone to be notified of your changes. Please remember that the national database is only good if everyone is keeping their own information up-to-date.

WORLD’S FASTEST CATAMARAN Article by David Cross, AP

Miss GEICO lives on a quiet side street off Garden Road in Riviera

Beach. She’s 50 feet long, weighs 9,500 lbs., is powered by a pair of

1850 hp Lycoming helicopter turbine engines and cost about

$2,500,000 to build. Miss GEICO has been the Superboat Unlimited

world champion ocean racer for the last two years and has a top

speed of over 200mph. Translated, this means she could cover the

length of a football field in less than a second.

Taking care of her is the job of a company by the name of AMF

Rigging. 4 years ago it moved from Pompano to Riviera Beach.15

full time employees oversee her preparation for the incredible

stresses of ocean racing. Keeping her company are a 38’ Caveman

1100 hp Cigarette boat; the first Miss GEICO (41’),champion ’05-’06;

the second Miss GEICO (44’), champion ’07-’09 and a 600hp safety

boat. For 6 consecutive years AMF Rigging has produced the world

champion.

Ocean racing requires deep pockets (hence the need for Geico

and other sponsors) and a very brave crew. The race is usually over

50 miles and follows a rectangular 5 mile circuit marked by buoys.

Speeds, even in rough water can be more than 150mph. A crew con-

sists of a driver and a throttle man. The great danger at high speed

is becoming air born and flipping. Serious injury and possible death

are the racer’s constant companions.

At a less stressful level AMF will attend about 11, mostly East

Coast, boat shows and a similar number of charitable events this

year. In 2011 it participated in Riviera’s ‘Youthbuild’ fund raiser

where a ‘ride’ in an ocean racer was auctioned for $750. Plans are

also in the works for conducted tours of their facility. Getting ‘up

close and personal’ with MISS GEICO is quite an experience!

At the time of going to press, chances of a fully sanctioned ocean

race off the Jupiter coastline in October look very promising. The

view from the shore of up to 50 of these spectacular machines

should be awesome. Take your ear protectors!

Scott Begovich, Position: Throttles of the “Miss GEICO” As a ten year old powerboat racing fan, Scott Begovich, and his brother would run their flat-bottomed boat with its tiny outboard motor up and down New Jersey's Metedeconk River. "We looked ridiculous in those big helmets," Begovich said, "but we loved it." After graduating from Florida Atlantic University, Scott had one goal in mind which was to make enough money to buy a racing boat. In 1995, Begovich purchased a Jersey Skiff and began working his way up through the racing ranks starting with skiffs before even-tually purchasing his first offshore boat in 1999. He directed his small and underfunded team to a World Championship in 2004. Then John Haggin called. "The first time I sat in the Miss GEICO in 2005, I thought, ‘what did I get myself into?’ "I had never driven a catamaran before, let alone throttle one. It was kind of scary but also exhilarating." 5 World Records and 6 consecutive World Championships later, Begovich and teammate Marc Granet, are virtually unbeatable. With Miss GEICO's top speeds in excess of 180 mph, not even the race helicopters can keep up - and Begovich says there's more to come. "Our new boat is even faster," Begovich said. We have created our own rigging company and we now service all of our boats inter-nally and we keep getting better, faster, and safer.

JUST WHAT IS PUBLIC RELATIONS By P/C Les McWhorter, Public Relations Officer

At some point in your career or volunteer work you have heard the adage that folks

who are really satisfied with you or your organization will tell five friends or associ-

ates. But, for every customer that is not satisfied, he/she will tell 25 friends, family,

or just about everybody who will listen! Often we are not really sure just what is the meaning of 'public relations'. Other

words or phrases get intermingled. As members of the Palm Beach Sail & Power

Squadron we can greatly influence whether our friends or neighbors might consider

taking our ABC class, and maybe even join as members.

Definitions:

PUBLICITY: Any information which brings attention to the purposes and

programs of the USPS.

PUBLIC IMAGE: A mental picture and/or conception of what the USPS IS and

DOES in the community.

Combining 'publicity' and 'public image' equals PUBLIC RELATIONS, hopefully

creating a favorable PUBLIC OPINION.

'Publicity' is what we want the public to think. 'Public image' is, in reality, what

the public thinks or does NOT think about the United States Power Squadrons.

Each of us can do a great deal to present a positive picture of the importance

of boating safety on our waterways. It only takes a few positive words at the right

time to be a "P.R. Person" for the Squadron.

Remember:
