As we conclude the 2017-2018 academic year, I can’t help but think just how quickly this school year has gone. It seems like only yesterday that it was August, and the hustle and bustle of the new year was upon us. Now nine months have passed, seemingly in a blink of an eye. This 2017-2018 school year has been filled with great excitement and growth. I look forward to building on this year’s success, and can’t wait for a bit of rest this summer and for the 2018-2019 school year to begin.

This year a great many things happened at ISK. With the growth in our elementary, we saw an all-time high in school enrollment, with a peak of 96 students. Our after school program or ECA (Extra Curricular Activities) were expanded to five days a week, with offerings in Taekwondo, cooking, cross country, archery, swimming, badminton, and futsal, among others. On April 18th to the 20th, the International School of Kuantan hosted a Visiting Committee from the Accrediting Commission for Schools-Western Association of Schools and Colleges or ACS-WASC. The two member team of Mr. Gary Robson of Ayeryawaddy International School in Myanmar and Ms. Rekha Sachdej of Wells International School in Thailand arrived to evaluate the academic program and view the growth of the school since the last accreditation visit in the spring of 2017. ACS-WASC’s accredits over 4,500 schools in California, Hawaii, the Pacific Islands, and internationally. Through their guidance and recommendations, schools in the aforementioned regions are able to take appropriate measures to ensure that students are learning and schools are improving. More Information about WASC: As an American curriculum school, accreditation from ACS-WASC is a vital component of ISK’s

identity and aligns with our school’s founding Charter Statement which is: “The International School of Kuantan will provide quality education modeled on the curricula and practices of public and private schools in the United States of America using English as the medium of instruction to prepare students for admission to university.”

    ACS-WASC Mission Statement:

“ Through ACS WASC’s evaluation of institutions, ACS WASC accreditation assures the educational community, the general public, and other organizations and agencies that an institution has clearly defined objectives appropriate to education; has established conditions under which their achievement can reasonably be expected; appears in fact to be accomplishing them substantially; is so organized, staffed, and supported that it can be expected to continue to do so; and demonstrates that it meets ACS WASC’s criteria and accreditation standards. ACS WASC encourages and supports institutional development and improvement through an institutional self-evaluation using the accreditation criteria and policies, as well as mid-cycle, follow-up, and special reports, and periodic evaluation of institutional quality by qualified peer professionals.”

Literacy Month Must Be Every Month and Every Day! The ISK Literacy Month was kicked off by our own Ms. Christine by showcasing the amazing author, Enid Mary Blyton. Teachers and students also read at assembly throughout the month. Other activities included a character-dress-up-day, and a crazy-hair-day and our big spelling bee! Last, our used book drive was a success - thank you for contributing!

Albert Einstein is credited as having said, “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be very intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” While we understand Mr Einstein's now that intelligence is fixed, the importance of reading is never been more critical. Not only does reading together with your child create a bond, it also develops a your child's imagination and creativity. Reading is the key to learning and we must make an effort everyday to ensure that our children are reading everyday. Carroll Moreton Jr. Director of Studies

On March 2nd, high school students visited Petronas BASF at Gebeng. We arrived around 10 o'clock and were checked in by the security guard on duty. After that, Ms. Hanis (our guide for the day) invited us to the Lotus Cafe (cafeteria) to view a safety and corporate video. We were then treated to a delicious brunch of fried mee hoon, currypuff, sandwiches, coffee, and tea.

Our first stop was the Aroma Lab - Mr. Alfred ten Haaf, Senior Manager QM, greeted us and gave us another short safety briefing. We got to see some expensive and sophisticated instruments, such as the GC-MS (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer) and Karl-Fischer Titrator. The QC engineer demonstrated the amazing facilities and explained how each instrument worked.

After that, we went to another room called the Sensory Lab where we got to smell various type of synthetic rose and lemongrass fragrances. We were each given a few scent strips and told to take a whiff and try to identify the fragrances. It is not an easy job!

Our last stop was the Response Centre where we all took turns sliding down the fireman’s “Bomba” pole. Even Mr Ben had a chance to try it out!!!

Finally, we boarded the bus and were taken on a tour around the site. Overall we had a great time and we hope to go again next year.

ISK students in grades 4 to 12 went to Paya Beach Resort in Pulau Tioman. Students took part in nature and team building activities. The highlight of the trip was a snorkeling excursion, where students got to see coral and tropical fish.

A few lucky students even saw stingrays and sharks.

ISK students in the High School World History class took a field trip around Kuantan to visit various WWII era sites. During WWII, Kuantan did see its share of fighting, with both the airfield and ferry crossing seeing considerable

action as the Japanese army advanced southward toward Singapore.

ISK Elementary school students went on a field trip to Bukit Gambang Safari Park. Students learned about different animals from around the world. Students also had the opportunity to get up-close and even touch some exotic animals.

On Sunday May 13th, ISK held its annual International Food Fair. Cuisine from over 15 different nations were prepared, shared, and enjoyed by over 400 guests and family members. Parents, students, and teachers put in a great deal of time

and effort in to ensuring that the day's activities were both fun and educational.

On June 5th ISK celebrated its 20th annual Graduation and Awards ceremony. In addition to honoring the accomplishments of its seven graduating seniors, students from kindergarten to grade 12 also received awards for their various achievements throughout the academic year. These awards included honors for Most Outstanding, Most Improved, and Outstanding Effort in individual classes, as well as awards for athletic achievement, leadership within Student council, sports teams, and various clubs. Finally, a few special honors were given to five outstanding students for exemplifying the characteristics espoused in ISK’s Essential Schoolwide Learning Results or ESLR’s. One student each was honored for the traits of Communication, Lifelong Learning, Problem Solving, People Skills, and Responsibility.

In addition to the honoring of all students for their achievements this year, we also held the graduation ceremony for our seniors and their culmination of studies at ISK. A special acknowledgement was given to two seniors; Jessica Goh Sook Sum and Lee Chong Hong, as they were named the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of their classes. We wish our seniors good fortune and all the best in their future endeavors. Way to go!
