April 2019 Websites Apps Events Seminars Conferences Resources Inspiration
The primary focus of The Vine is adult faith formation for the mission of Jesus Christ and the building up of parishes and faith communities. There has been one Vatican document that specifically addresses this area: Adult Catechesis in the Christian Community – Some Principles and Guidelines. While written almost 20 years ago it is highly relevant today. In paragraph 26 we read, ‘A catechesis of adults … will be attentive to the problems and experiences [of men and women]. It will make use of their spiritual and cultural resources, always respecting the differences among them.’
This edition of The Vine reflects the diversity of needs, gifts and spiritualties within the Church. We hope you find this information helpful. Please promote events and resources in newsletters, websites and social media so that, ‘Through repeated efforts and, above all, through an unshakeable faith in God, one is drawn into the Mystery of the Kingdom: a small seed which slowly but surely grows, for the joy and salvation of all’ (para 85).
Please send information on diocesan, parish and deanery events by 17 May 2019 for the next edition of The Vine to: [email protected]

WEBSITES Dr Nora Amath – My Story _______________________________________________________
In the wake of the horrific shooting of 100 people attending their places of worship in Christchurch, New Zealand, Christians here and in other parts of the world have stood in solidarity, compassion and prayer with their Muslim brothers and sisters. In Brisbane, Archbishop Mark Coleridge attended a gathering at the Islamic College on the Sunday after the attacks, along with thousands of people from a diverse range of cultures and religions.
In 2016 I had the privilege of filming two presentations by Dr Nora Amath. Besides being an academic, she is highly active in human rights advocacy and community work, including interfaith dialogue and currently chairs AMARAH (Australian Muslim Advocates for the Rights of All Humanity).
In The Face of Mercy (Misericordiae Vultus) Pope Francis writes:
‘Among the privileged names that Islam attributes to the Creator are “Merciful and Kind”. This invocation is often on the lips of faithful Muslims who feel themselves accompanied and sustained by mercy ... I trust that this Jubilee year … may … open us to even more fervent dialogue so that we might know and understand one another better; may it eliminate every form of closed-mindedness and disrespect, and drive out every form of violence and discrimination.’ (#23)
Sharing these two videos, presented by Dr Nora Amath, is one way we can ‘foster an encounter’ with Islam and ‘open us to …dialogue’.

ACU Centre for Liturgy launches Liturgy Nexus for Schools _____________________________
Australian Catholic University (ACU) has launched a Liturgy Nexus for Schools to help promote excellence in liturgical praxis in Catholic education.
The ACU Liturgy Nexus for Schools is a subscription-based online network that provides a platform for conversations and resource-sharing for Catholic school staff who are tasked with preparing and celebrating liturgy.
Good liturgical praxis requires a solid knowledge of the rituals and principles contained in the Church’s official liturgical books, as well as the skills to apply those principles well in practice.
An initiative of the ACU Centre for Liturgy, the online network aims to provide a forum where Catholic school personnel can ask important questions and raise issues related to liturgy in a welcoming space moderated by liturgical experts. Being a part of the conversation will help increase the confidence and competence of those preparing and celebrating liturgy.
The ACU Liturgy Nexus for Schools will better equip Catholic school staff for their work. A national network involving personnel from primary and secondary schools can facilitate the sharing of resources and offers an excellent opportunity for professional development. The online network will be moderated by a liturgical specialist with extensive experience in the Catholic schools context to create a welcoming space for staff to ask liturgical questions, receive accurate direction and guidance, and be pointed to useful liturgical resources.
Membership is granted to applicants who meet the eligibility criteria. The membership fee is $30.00 per year
For more information on the ACU Liturgy Nexus for Schools or to register visit: ACU Liturgy Nexus for Schools online.
The ACU Centre for Liturgy aims to facilitate liturgical formation at every level in the life of the Church in Australia and is committed to supporting schools to celebrate liturgy well. Support is available to schools individually, regionally, at Diocesan levels and even to those in remote settings.

Professor Tom O’Loughlin ● Who Celebrates the Liturgy? ______________________________
Professor O’Loughlin, born in Dublin, has held the chair in Historical Theology at the University of Nottingham for ten years. He is a priest of the diocese of Arundel and Brighton on England’s south coast. He is a specialist in the early Church and the early medieval period, but his work is not dry Church history. Rather he draws on the experience of Christian living and believing in the past to understand what is important for Christians today to make sense of their faith. Liturgy and sacraments is a key focus of his work.
He sees one of his key tasks as communication – taking the fruit of academic research and communicating its insights to a wider public. His visit to Brisbane and Toowoomba will bring the best of liturgical scholarship and make it accessible to everyone. For example, one of his recent publications is an easy-to-read 100-page book The Rites and Wrongs of Liturgy: Why Good Liturgy Matters. But he is also well-known for more serious works such as The Eucharist: Origins and Contemporary Understandings and Making the Most of the Lectionary: A User’s Guide.
Professor O’Loughlin’s work in Brisbane and Toowoomba 26-28 June will focus on the simple question of Who Celebrates the Liturgy? Working with priests and education leaders, and offering public lectures in each diocese, he will explore the meaning of the Vatican II liturgical principle of full, conscious, active participation in the liturgy by the whole assembled people of God. What is the role of the priest in the liturgy? How should we celebrate Sunday Mass? His presentations will help us rethink ministry and Christian life for the present age.
Public Lecture:
• Date: Wednesday evening, 26 June 2019 • Venue: Hanly Room, Francis Rush Centre, 227 Elizabeth Street, Brisbane • Enquiries: Contact Tom Elich, Liturgy Brisbane [email protected]; (07) 3324 3323

RESOURCES O God of Loveliness – the poetry of St Alphonsus _____________________________________
St Pauls Publications has ‘given’ us this magnificent volume (173 pages) of over 70 poems written by Alphonsus Maria de Lighouri (1696-1787). These texts, whilst written over 300 years ago, often speak to us today in language right for our times (see the text of ‘Come, Come Holy Spirit’ at the end of The Vine). Each poem is presented in Italian and English. Fr Patrick Corbett CSsR (editor) has written an excellent introduction that gives an insight into Alphonsus as poet, artist and musician. St Alphonsus Lighouri is regarded as one of the great Catholic spiritual writers. This book has been lovingly produced with stunning artwork (some by Alphonsus) throughout the text. The book would make a wonderful gift. $24.95.

INSPIRATION FOR THE ROAD AHEAD ...
Come, come Holy Spirit, come, comforter of the afflicted, with your light and flame divine, come, comfort this heart of mine.
… You are the God who gives comfort to every sad and afflicted heart; come quickly, without delay, come, your children to console.
Most loving Holy Spirit, to our tired limbs give rest, your holy gifts we desire, we ask for them, in Jesus’ name.
Great God of love, come and inflame our hearts with love; come, fill our minds, with your holy light and love divine.
… So then, divine love, come quickly in our hearts. Come, Lord, to help us, come, Father, to comfort us.
