UIT DIE BESTUURSSITPLEK……………….FROM THE DRIVER’S SEAT
One of the highlights on the Club’s annual Second Sunday meeting calendar, the American Day, took place
11 March. As usual, a large variety of American vehicles of all kinds and sizes turned up in their droves.
Photographic highlights of these vehicles are included elsewhere in this Newsletter Very impressive this
year, was the visit by the Harley Davidson Club that joined us with a large number of Harleys. The sound
generated by these impressive machines on their arrival, was music to the ears of most of us that were
present. By that time there were so many vehicles present that providing parking space for the Harleys,
required quite a bit of organising. Thanks to everybody that made the day so successful, especially to Frik
Kraamwinkel for advertising the event; Christo Ferreira for organising it, dealing with general matters and
for looking after the needs of exhibitors; as well as Ralph van der Merwe who advised us on general
security matters. Thanks too to all club members that attended with their old vehicles. We all had a most
enjoyable day. The Club’s Bar facility and kitchen are up and running and seems to be providing in most of
those present’s liquor needs. Cecelina and I enjoyed a very nice pub lunch from the kitchen’s menu. Juan
Esterhuizen informed me that a buffet lunch will also be available on these Sundays, provided that
bookings for it are made by the Wednesday prior to the meeting.
As explained at the previous Club meeting, the POMC was approached to include blind navigators in a club
rally. The intention is that some club members participating in a rally should utilise the services of blind
navigators to navigate for them. Whilst the Committee is still investigating this request, members who
would be willing to assist in this regard are requested to submit their names to me. We are requesting
members’ assistance in this regard. Such a step would be promote the Club and would be to the Club’s
advantage. However if no members are forthcoming in this regard, we cannot proceed with this
arrangement.
“loslig” motors val, is enige ou motor welkom. Die idee is dat soveel klublede as moontlik met hulle ou
motors by die Voortrekker monument bymekaar kom en dan daarvandaan na die Klubhuis ry.
Beste groete.............. Kind regards Berto Lombard

POMC American day 2018
On Sunday the 11th of March 2018 the Pretoria Old Motor Club held its
annual American day, and as usual, this was one of the biggest events
on the club’s annual calendar.
The first front-wheel-drive car to come from the United States of
America was not the Oldsmobile Toronado of the 1960’s but an almost forgotten car that pre-dated it by
thirty years. The Cord 810 was introduced in 1936,followed by the supercharged version, the 812, a year
later. Sakkie van der Wat owns the latter version, which looks completely original, but has been modified
to make it easier to maintain. He replaced the original engine wit ha 350 cubic inch (5,7 litre) Chevrolet
engine and converted it to a rear wheel drive by fiting a differential. Not only was the Cord the first front-
wheel-drive American car, it was also the first to feature hidden pop-up headlamps.
5
The Dodge Charger gained international fame by being used in movies like Bullit and The fast and the
furious, but because of import restrictions when it was new, very few of them reached South Africa. One
of those that was imported, is a very special car owned by Bryce Roberts that is not even close to
standard mechanical specification. Neverthless, or may be because of it, this car attracted a lot of interest.
The engine fitted to this specific car is a 528 cubic inch (8.6 litre)version of the well-known Chrysler Hemi
V8 engine. It is still fitted with an automatic transmission, but an over drive has been fitted. He also fitted
independent front suspension and disc brakes all round.
Speaking of Chrysler, the Valiant was a top seller for a few years and two models that shared nothing but
the same name, engine and transmission when they were new, were on display and the cars themsevles
could not be more different. The first as an increasingly rare sight on South African roads. The VJ range was
arguably the most popular of the “Fastbody” models, the last version of the Valiant which had an
American engine and transmission but was developed in Australia. The Regal was the mid-range model
and was the most popular throughout its lifetime. Jan Nel is the owner of the immaculately original VJ
Regal, was manufactured between 1973 and 1975, but it still had the original TP number plates it came
with when it was new.
6
The other Valiant on display was not marketed as such in the United States of America. The Barracuda had
the Plymouh name in its country of origin and the other, more important difference, was that no V8 engine
was ever available in this, or other Valiant models in South Africa. Drikus Botha runs a workshop that works
on cars of American origin and he displayed a heavily modified 1968 Valiant Barracuda that was
manufactured in South Africa but has been fitted with the 318 cubic inch (5,2 litre) V8 engine that was
available for the American version. The car has also been restored and Drikus has owned this particular car
for approximately six years.
The Ford Mustang was the most instantly successful car in history and since its introduction in 1964 it was
destined to become a classic. Most cars have been fitted with V8 engines and automatic transmission but
there have been a few exceptions, like Carl du Plessis’s 1966 model. He bought his car in 1997 in the USA,
and he specifically wanted a convertible. However, he was on a tight budget and he settled for a model
that has always been extremly rare; a six-cylinder model fitted with a 200 cubic inch (3,3 litre) engine and a
three-speed manual transmission with a floor gearshift. This car is in an immaculately original condition; it
as never been restored and even the push-button radio is still the one the car was fitted with when it was
new.
7
In the immediate post-World War 2 years, Chevrolet was one of the most popular cars in South Africa, and
the Fleetmaster and its two-door stable mate, the Fleetline, sold particularly well. The Fleetmaster on
display was a 1947 model, one of just about 26 000 manufactured in that year. It came from the General
Motors manufacturing plant in Port Elizabeth and was sold by De Kock Garage in Middelburg, Mpumalanga
for £ 565, the equivalent of R 11 000 today if the current exchange rate is taken into consideration. Its
original registration number was TM 855.
8
The 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air was another car that was a top seller in Souh Africa. Willie Oosthuizen has
owned his car for 18 years and it has never been restored.
Needless to say, Chevrolet’s main rival as far as American cars on the South African market was concerned,
was Ford, an Albert Etsebeth owns a collection of pre-war and post-war Fords, several of which were on
display. The Custom V8 was part of the first redesign of Ford cars after World War 2, and was the top-of-
the-range model from that year. Albert has owned his 1949 Custom V8 for two years and the only change
he made, was to restore the paint to its original silver colour.

Henry Ford
"It is regrettable that people think about our monetary system, and of our economic structure, only in times
of depression."
"When a puff of prosperity returns, for election or other reasons, see that it does not remove your minds
from the economic problem which is never settled by a temporary prosperity. It is regrettable that people
think about our monetary system, and of our economic structure, only in times of depression. In a situation
so easily manipulated as ours is, it is comparatively easy to switch on a period of depression to force the
people to turn a certain way, or to switch on a period of partial prosperity to take their minds away from too
serious thoughts. It has been done, as every big politician and as every political banker knows, and it can be
done again. But it is simply slavery to live under a system that can be thus manipulated. The only prosperity
the people can afford to be satisfied with is the kind that lasts"
