ciation All-American honors in addition to the five NJCAA wrestling selections. Kudos to all of the All-American selec-tions and nominees, as well as the All-Region selections and Wrestling District champions.

FACULTY & STAFF RECOGNITIONAnnually as part of the Car-

dinal Honor Roll ceremony, the student-athletes and athletic staff select faculty and staff members that display exempla-ry service to NIC and the ath-letics department. This year’s winner of the Floyd Rosenlund staff award was Donya Gadley, from the Financial Aid office. We honored co-winners of the

Squirt Keating faculty award this year: English in-structor Josh Misner and retiring nursing depart-ment instructor Joyce Ferrell. Congratulations to these special employees that truly display the NIC Cardinal spirit on our campus. In addition, we recognized over 60 student-athletes that made the Cardinal Honor Roll by earning a 3.0 GPA, at half-time of the Men’s basketball game against Utah State University-Eastern. Our athletes continue to admirably balance the demands of academics and athletics! Well done!

ATHLETICS AWARD BANQUETJoin us on April 25 for the Annual Athlet-

It’s hard to believe that we are already into the home stretch of the 2014-15 school season. The Winter sports sea-sons ended on a high with a 4th place national finish by the Wrestling team, and a regional championship appearance by the men’s basketball team. Women’s basketball’s ten year run of 20 win seasons came to an end, but the Lady Cardinals still finished with another win-ning record. Spring sports are now underway with the NIC golf team hosting the first of-ficial NWAC tournament of the season on April 19-20, and softball is putting the NWAC on notice that they will be an immediate force to reckon with for years to come. (See Softball feature story on the next page.)

ALL AMERICAN RECOGNITIONThe NJCAA released the All-American awards

for the winter sports and several Cardinals received consideration and honors. Congratulations to Wres-tling for earning 5 spots on the NJCAA All-Amer-ica team, led by first team selection and national champion Taylor Kornoely. Freshman Dajour Reece earned second team honors as the national runner-up, and Jordan Cooks, Jonathen Dennis, and Michael Nguyen made the Honorable Mention All-American team. Sophomore Kara Staggs from Women’s Basketball was voted NJCAA Honor-able Mention after leading the SWAC in scoring. Men’s Basketball freshman guard Braian Angola-Rodas was nominated by the SWAC after earning 1st team All-Region honors but fell just short in the All-American selection process. The softball team begins a new era into the NWAC after being a member of the NJCAA since the program was established in 1996. This is a year of transition for the Lady Cardinals and because of scholarship rules, NIC will not be able to compete for the NWAC league or regional championship this year. NIC will still play a full NWAC sched-ule this season, and their wins will count against their opponents’ overall record.

With only regular season games to play for, the Lady Cardinals have set the bar high for a school record win-ning percentage. With the spring season under-way the team is stepping up to the challenge of the NWAC with a strong start to the season with a 28-4 record.

The season started with a four game sweep at the NWAC Pre-Sea-son Crossover tourna-ment in Richland, WA. The team fundraised to make a trip to Florida to ensure games in good weather in the early season. They had a solid showing at the Spring Games in Clermont, FL winning 6 of 7 games. The Cards opened up with two wins against Il-linois Valley Community College (15-3) and Cornell College JV (8-2) to earn the sweep on the first day. Day two was a triple header against John A. Logan College (12-2), Mes-abi Range College (11-2), and Kalamazoo Valley Community College (11-7) to take away another three wins. To round out the weekend, the Cardinals dropped their first game to Georgia Highlands with a score of (5-1); however they quickly rebounded and

finished with a win vs. West Virginia Wes-leyan College JV with a score of 3-2.

The Cardinals have been consistent offen-sively in the NWAC as the scores have indi-cated. NWAC East Region play began on the road, winning doubleheaders at Walla Walla Community College 10-5 and 7-6, and then at Columbia Basin College 3-1 and 10-0. In the first home games of the year the Lady Cardinal bats remained hot, beating the same opponents: CBC 10-3 and 8-0, and WWCC 13-0 and 9-3. The Cards completed the home

stand the following week-end defeating Wenatchee 9-5, and 19-0.

The unseasonably warm weather has al-lowed the Lady Cards to actually practice regu-larly outdoors and results have been obvious on the mound and at the plate. The Cards returned to the road and earned double-

header wins against Big Bend 26-4 and 13-2, and against Yakima Valley 13-0 and 11-0. As expected with these scores the Cardinals are dominant in hitting and pitching statis-tical categories in the NWAC. Pitcher Tori Almos, who signed with Oregon Tech, is second in the NWAC in wins at 12-0, with a 2.01 ERA. Oregon State signee Madison Anthony is batting .477, with 11 homeruns and 47 RBI. The Fields sisters are also among the stats leaders with Hayley batting .516 with 38 RBI, and Hayden hitting .461 with 35 RBI and 7 homeruns!

Come watch the Cardinals in action for the remaining home games. Check out the website for upcoming games!

GOLFThe Cards hosted the first NWAC tourna-

ment of 2015 at Avondale GC on April 19-20, with plans to get better with each tourna-ment. The rust from the winter layoff was evident in the Car-dinals first spring tournament hosted by Lewis-Clark State College at the Clarkston Golf and Country Club. The men finished 6 out of 7 teams in a strong field of mostly four year schools. Sopho-more Michael Porter was in contention on day one with a 1 over par 73, but shot 83 on day 2 for 20th place. The women finished in 5th place with freshman Mackenzie Phillips, 22nd place, and sophomore Elsa Goodsen- 23 place, the top Cardinal scorers. The Car-dinals have NWAC tournaments in Yakima at Apple Tree GC, and Bellevue, WA at Willow Run and Glendale Golf Courses before the NWAC Region Championships on April 26-27. The women can compete for the NWAC championship at the Oakbrooke GC in Ta-coma, WA on May 17-18, but the men can only compete for individual honors due to the NWAC scholarship rules during NIC’s first year transition agreement.

CHEERBack from California, with a 3rd place tro-

phy! This is a piece of a bigger picture for the Cardinal Cheerleaders. Winning is always the ultimate goal, but keeping it that black and white you lose a lot of accomplish-ment through the year.

We strive to focus on the North Idaho College Cardinals athletic motto: Build-ing on a Tradition of Excellence!

This year the team competed with stunts superior to years past. Day one and day two of the competition the

performance had minor mistakes. The score sheet is broken down into 5 cat-

egories: Choreography, execution, showman-ship, overall impression, and difficulty. After all fields were added, NIC was 1.5 points down from College of Southern Idaho, and 5 points away from Palomar College. 4th place was 10 points behind NIC.

The team is proud of what they accom-plished this year, and ready to build upon it for next year! A majority of the team con-tinues to go to train new tumbling and stunt skills at Flip Factory Gymnastics in Hayden.

WRESTLINGThe NIC Wrestling team is on the road re-

cruiting, already planning to build on the 4th place finish at the NJCAA Wrestling Nation-al Championships in Des Moines, Iowa in February. The Cardi-nals continue to win individual honors as sophomore Taylor Kornoely was se-lected as the Idaho Hall of Fame Male College Athlete of the Year. Kornoely earned the NJCAA individual national title and 1st team All-American honors. Freshman Dajour Reece finished as the national runner-up at 165, and the Cardinals earned All-American honors for seven wrestlers overall. The Cardinals (109 points) narrowly missed a third place finish, only four points behind North Iowa Area Community College. Iowa Central (158.5) earned their seventh NJCAA team title, with Region 18 rival Clackamas Com-munity College (131.5) finishing second.

Other Cardinal All-Americans:Johnathen Dennis, Soph, (197) 4thMichael Nguyen, Soph, (125) 4thJordan Cooks, Fr (Weight Class 174) 5thTyler McLean, Soph (157) 6thBryce Weatherston, Soph, (141) 8th

WOMEN’S BASKETBALLThe Lady Cardinals finished off the season

with an 18-13 record while beating or com-peting well with everyone in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

Sophomore Kara Staggs received First Team All-SWAC honors. Kara was the lead-ing scorer in the SWAC at 16.2 points per game. She was second in made three point-ers, fouth in free throw percentage at 85%, fifth in three point percentage, seventh in assists, and seventh in assist/turnover ratio. Freshman Monica Landdeck earned Second Team All-SWAC honors. Monica was sixth in the SWAC in scoring at 12.9 points per game. She was also fourth in both three point percentage and made three pointers. Sophomore Panisesi Taimani was named Honorable Men-tion All-SWAC. She was amongst SWAC leaders in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, and blocked shots.

We are pleased with the progress of our spring skill workouts, open gyms, and re-cruiting. We’ve also been busy helping our sophomore sort through their options for next year.

Several sophomores have been busy with recruiting visits to four-year programs and will make their decisions within the next few weeks. It has been exciting to follow our alumni as they continue their careers after NIC. Special mention goes out to Georgia Stirton who is a junior at Gonzaga Univer-sity. Georgia has been a full time starter at the point position for the Bulldogs who just advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. We also like to give a shout out to Kama Griffitts.

After a successful finish to her collegiate career at the University of Arizona, Kama spend this past season playing professionally in Italy. After winning a high school state championship with Coeur d’ Alene High School and a national championship here at NIC, Deanna Dotts finished off her collegiate career playing for a national championship in Canada.

MEN’S BASKETBALLA tough loss to instate rival CSI in the Re-

gion 18 Championship game ended the Car-dinals season abruptly. Our team was playing great basketball down the stretch but we just hit the wall late in the Championship game. With a tough 5 games on the road, NIC Men’s bas-ketball played well throughout the tournament knocking off the host USU-Eastern in a nail bit-ter on opening day. That win put us up against the SWAC Co-Champion Salt Lake Commu-nity College. Three of our 8 season losses came against the Bruins of Salt Lake. The Cardinals were ready for this match up and came out of the gate hot and took a 10-0 lead. Although the Bruins fought hard and took a late lead, the Cardinals were able to hold them off and move

into the Region 18 Championship game against rival CSI. In a winner goes to Hutch game, the Cardinals came out and played well for 34 minutes. Unfortunately, the last 6 minutes were the ones that cost NIC their season. With a 5 point lead, the Golden Eagles had a 3 in tran-

sition then a dunk off a turnover, and the Car-dinals just couldn’t stir up enough gas to hold them off. The Cardinals finished their season with a successful record of 24-8, and a second place finish in the Region 18 tournament.

With the season at an end, we are work-ing hard in the classroom to keep our student/athletes on track to graduate. We are losing 6 sophomores and potentially a couple fresh-men to four year schools. Our coaching staff is hard at work looking to replace the talent that we are losing. With Austin Pope, Jordan King, Fuquan Niles, Jamaal Robateau, and Ty Higbie departing, we are lucky to have Djuan Piper, Braian Angola, Lucas Antunez, Charlie Lock-wood, and potentially Kyle Guice. With this solid group returning, we are anxious to bring in great student/athletes that will fit in with our great team chemistry that we finished with. We are happy with our team and what they accom-plished this year. We are all still having a tough time swallowing the loss, but at the same time we’re looking forward to building on this great

first year. Thanks again for all your support and we look forward to continually building a pro-gram that our school and community will be proud of.

VOLLEYBALLThe Lady Cardinals have officially started

spring practice. With only one month of spring ball left we are practicing hard and making sure that the girls are staying in shape, men-tally and physically. We will be having re-cruits on campus this weekend from Utah and

Colorado, both girls very talented middle blockers.

This past month our volleyball team went out into the community asking for pajama donations. All the pajamas will be going to the Post Falls Police Department for the children that get taken out of their

homes for domestic violence or any reason what so ever. Our goal as a team is to come up with over 100 pair of pajamas for them. We were close to accomplishing our goal (see picture on Page 7), however we are still col-lecting. If you would like to donate pair of pajamas please stop by the Christianson gym-nasium and there will be a drop off box in the foyer. Reminder, the pajamas have to be new.

We have two spring tournaments this year that we will be attending. Gonzaga Spring tournament was held at Gonzaga on March 28, and the team played extremely well. Lewis Clark State College has also agreed to play us at their place Friday, April 10th. If you have time, come watch your NIC Lady Cardinals.

MEN’S SOCCERMen’s soccer is wrapping up recruiting.

Lake City High School graduate Chris Whee-lock has decided to transfer from Westminster College in Salt Lake City and committed to NIC last week. Wheelock is expected to have an immediate impact at forward and provide exceptional leadership on and off the field. Goalkeeper Garrett Boyce of Coeur d’Alene High School has also committed. Boyce is technically clean and will challenge current

freshman Mitch Markovetz for time in goal. From Chandler, Arizona, Kieran Wood has also committed. Wood was a starting cen-

terback on Arizo-na’s Chandler High School state champi-onship team in Febru-ary. Wood is also an exceptional student and a leader in student government. Wood’s addition will give the Cardinals four high quality centerbacks.

In other news, Ryan Krempels, a

team member in 2011 and 2012 has been ac-cepted to the Creighton University School of Medicine. Krempels is the first Cardinal in recent memory to be accepted to medical school. Tryouts for the Spokane Shadow semi-professional team occurred the last weekend in March. Braden Ridgewell, Brady Ulen, and Adam Talley all made the team. Fi-nally, spring training began April 6th, and the Cardinals will play at Community Colleges of Spokane on April 23rd and at Walla Walla Community College on April 26th.

WOMEN’S SOCCERWomen’s Soccer is in full stride. Ok, I’m

just kidding, but the weather has been nice enough it feels like we should be training and playing games. We are in pre-spring season mode at the moment with the girls focusing hard on their academics, strength and fitness. We got to officially start spring training in

April and we’ll shut down just before fi-nals so the players can focus on tests and end of semester projects. We are going to have two spring games, the first was at Idaho on April 19th and the second will be at Eastern Washington on May 1st at 4pm.

Enjoy the weather while you can, the real spring weather, cold and wet, will be arriving anytime now.

Go Cardinals!
