A Brief History
TheHonoredLadiesofAlKalyShrinewasformallystartedbythelateISRayGibsonin1983.AtoneoftheWesternStatesShrineAssociationmeetings,ISRaytalkedwithanotherPotentatewhoexplainedtheClubthattheyhadformedforwomenwhohadbeenwidowed.RayhadoftentoldLadyJeanneofhisdesiretodomorethangiveacardtothenewwidow.Hefeltthatwomenwerecrucialtoaman’ssuccessasaShrinerandcontributedtheirsupportforhisactivitiesinaClub,aUnit,ortheLine.FormallystartingaClubforthewidowsseemedlikewhatheshoulddo.In1983,heandJeannetalkedabouthowtoformtheClub.HedividedtheAlKalyareaintofoursectionsanddesignatedatowntobethehostingtowneachquarter.ThespringmeetingwasinPueblo,thesummerinColoradoSprings,thefallinSalidaandwinterinCanonCity.Themeetingsweretoconsistoflunchandentertainment.ISRaysawthisashis
missiontopromoteawayforwidowstostayconnectedtoAlKalyShrine. Twenty-nineyearslater,ISRayGibson’screationisgoingon.TheHonoredLadiesstillmeetquarterly,althoughwiththeactivitiesofAlKalywesometimeshavetomoveourmeetingsabit.Fellowshipandfriendshipthatwasextendedallthoseyearsagoisstillourtoppriority.Weallhavejoinedthisveryspecialgroupthroughthelossofourspouse.Weallknowthatcanbealonelytimeandwearegladtowelcomethosewhoshareourjourney.WhenwelearnofalossofaShriner,wesendaletterorextendapersonalinvitationtothenewwidow.Itsometimestakesawhilebeforesheisreadytojoinanewgroup,butwearealwaysreadytowelcomeandembraceher.Ifwehavenotcontactedthenewwidow,itisbecauseweareveryinformalandmaynotlearnofthelossinatimelymanner.PleaseconsiderjoiningusforanewwaytoparticipateinAlKalyShrine.IfyouhavequestionscallISBobandLadyBettyBurrwhosponsortheHonoredLadiesattherequestofthelateISRayGibson.Phonenumber597-7281orcell332-3799.

What Keeps the Shrine Alive? SomanytimeswelookatAlKalyShrineandwonderhowithassurvivedandhowitcontinuestogrowandbeaforceinourcommunitiesandinourstate.WehaveonlytolookatthepartnershipthathasbeenforgedbetweenIHOPandAlKalyandthewaythatWasteManagementandtherecyclingprogrammanagetokeeprollingandbringingfundsintotheClubsandTransportationFunds.WeneedalsotolookdeeperintothemembershipofAlKalyShrineandseethequietmenwhohavededicatedsomuchoftheirtimeandtalentstoAlKalyanditsUnitsandClubs.OneofthesemenisDaveHufffromColoradoSprings.HecomesfromalongtraditionoffamilymembershipintheMasonicfraternity. LikesomanymeninTheGreatGeneration,Davejoinedthemilitaryassoonashewasoldenoughtojoin.He’dsignedupforthefledglingAirForceinhighschoolbutfoundoutthatthoseyoungmenwouldendupasinfantryanyhow.So,whenhegraduatedandwasdaysfrombeingeighteen,(hismotherwouldn’tsignforhimtojoin)hejoinedtheNavy.ThiswasinSeptember1944.ListeningtoDaverecountthesememories,Itriedtopicturetheeighteenyearoldkidbeingsentoffwithabunchofotherkidstodothe“rightthing”forhiscountry.Hisstoriesremindedmeofhowmuchweowetokidslikethat,whoweredoingwhattheycouldfortheircountry.Theirlivingconditionsandtheirworldweresooutofsyncwiththewaytheyhadbeenlivingandhowtheyknewtheworldtobe. WhenhegotoutoftheNavyinMay1946,hefoundhiswaybacktoColoradoSpringsandthegirlhe’dbeen
datinginhighschool,Verna.Theyweremarriedsixty-fiveyearsagoandhavelivedinColoradoSpringsforallbutthreeyearsduringthattime. HewasamemberoftheDrumCorpsUnit,whichhadthirty-fivedrums,andtherewasawaitinglistforadrumtoopenup.ThecadetsfromtheAirForceAcademytrainedtheoriginalunit.Gettingthelargedrumfromplacetoplace,pullingitinparadesandmaintainingitwerequiteabigdeal.Thedrumheadwassensitivetoweatherchangesandtheyhadtopayattentionorpossiblydamagetheheadthatcostaboutathousanddollarstoreplace.OneoftheirbestfundraiserswasthemonthlydancesthattheyheldattheShrineClubduringthewintermonths.Theyhadlivemusicanddrewlargecrowds.PeoplecameanddancedandatethehotdogsandsnacksthattheDrumCorpssold.Itwasagreattimeandpeoplelovedtodance. TheywerepartoftheNomads,andthen,theywere
partoftheHillbilly’s.AsfarasI’vebeenabletodetermine,thepurposeofthatunitwastohavefunandthatalsorequiredthemtodothingsforalaugh.BothDaveandVernahadaballwiththeHillbillygroupandjoinedinthegreatfunofit.HewaspartoftheSpiritof’76Unitthatwasquiteunique.Theywereallex-militaryandwoulddressupanddepictscenesfromourhistoryontheirtrailerintheparades.Theycreatedtheirowncostumesanddidtheirownskits.DavewasthebloodieddrummerboyfromtheRevolutionaryWar.Theyhadanumberofscenesthattheyportrayedduringtheparadeseason.
DavehelpedwithmaintenanceontheShrineClubovertheyearsbypainting,remodeling,repairs,andkeepingupwiththeparkinglot.Heisoneofthequietmenwhokeepthingsrunningandsupportstheactivitiesthatarerequiredsothatthingskeeprunning. WetalkedabouthowtheyusedtorecruitthenewmemberstojoinaUnitrightaftertheirinitiation.Theydidn’ttrytointerferewiththosewhowerealreadycommittedtoaUnit,buttheyworkedtokeeptheirnumbersup.Thingshavechangedinthelastfortyyearsorso,television,andallsortsofotheractivitiesareavailable.ThereisstillaneedforthethingsthathelpedtheShrinetogrowthen,anditiswonderfulthattheShrineishereandaddressingthoseneeds.AsthenewPRslogansays:Keepthetraditionalive.Aren’tyouproudtobeaShriner?

February28th,TheInternationalHouseofPancakes(IHOP)andAlKalyShrinerscelebratedNationalPancakeday.Witheveryfreeshortstackofpancakesserved,guestswereinvitedtomakeadonationtoShrinersHospitalsforChildren,atallfourIHOPsinColoradoSpringsandthetwoinPueblo. Inadditiontoraisingfunds,thecampaignalsoraisedawarenessoftheShrinersHospitalsforChildren,a22hospitalhealthcaresystem-foundedbytheShinersInternationalFraternity.AllShrinersHospitalsprovidechildrenwiththebestavailablepediatricspecialtycareregardlessoftheirfamily’sabilitytopayforservices.NearlyonemillionchildrenhavebenefitedfromtheShrinersHospitalsuniqueapproachtohealthcare,andgoneontolivehappyandfulfilledlives. WeatAlKalyShriners,appreciatetheeffortsof
IHOPinbringingourcommunitytogetherforanenjoyablemeal.Inaddition,itprovidesAlKalyShrinerstheopportunitytospreadawarenessoftheShrinersHospitalsforChildrentoourcommunity.Plus,weareabletoraisefundsforourincrediblehealthcaresystemthroughthiscommunitysponsoredvenue.WealsowanttothankalltheIHOPstaff,volunteerShrinersandmostofallthefolksthatcameintothevariousIHOPsandsupportedtheShrinersHospitalforChildrenwiththeirgenerousdonations. ShrinersHospitalsforChildrenisdedicatedtoimprovingthelivesofchildrenbyprovidingstateoftheartpediatricspecialtycareofspinalcordinjuries,cleftlipandpalate,burninjuriesandclubfootdeformities.Childrenuptotheageof18areeligibleforcareandreceiveallservicesinafamily-centerenvironment,regardlessoftheirfamily’sabilitytopay. ThesecondSaturdayofeachmonth,from10AMuntilnoon,ShrinersinColoradoSpringsholdaMedicalassessmentclinicat6South33rdstreet.Noappointmentisneeded,asitisawalkinclinic. AlKalyShrinersareindebtedtoIHOPandthecommunitythatsupportedusduringtheNationalPancakeDay.Throughyourgenerosity,andtheresultsofallourefforts,wewereabletoraise$17,366.98(9thoutof25Temples)fortheShrinersHospitalsforChildren.Thetotalcollectedby25TemplesparticipatinginthisfundraiserforourHospitalswas$585,377.Thank you one and all.

I’vejumpedinwithbothfeetandamalreadylearningsomuch!Todate,IhaveattendedtwoOVs,theElJebelPotentate’sGala,andhaveparticipatedintheIHOPNationalPancakeDay.Ithasbeenagreatlearningexperiencesofar. TheLegionofHonorOVwasheldonJanuary15withIll.SirGarydoingthehonorsfortheirInstallationofOfficers.Thiswasveryimpressive.ThePastMastershadtheirOVinCanonCityonFebruary26,andifRogerandKarenhadn’tinvitedmetoridedownwiththem,Iprobablywouldstillbetryingtofindtherestaurant!ImetseveralmembersthatIhadneverseenbefore.ItwasafuneveningandIll.SirGaryalsoinstalledtheirnewofficers.TheGalaatElJebelwasalotoffun.ImetseveralmembersofElJebelandsharedatablewithmycounterpart.Ibelievewewillbesharingmanyideaswitheachotherastimegoesby.TheentertainerfortheeveningwascomedianRandyRigglewhotookusdownmemorylanethroughthe40s,50s,and60sinhisNostalgiashow.Heclosedtheshowwithaspecialpoemhehadwritten,inspiredbyhisfather,intributetoveterans.Forme,thistributewasthehighlightoftheevening–veryawesomeandmoving. Youthgroups,andspecificallytheirelectedleaders,expectthesupportoftheirgroupsandtheadultleaders,beitRainbow,DeMolayorJobsDaughters.Andwhilesomeshowmuchmoreleadershipthanothers,theyALLdeservethesupportofthelargergroupofMasons,Shriners,YorkandScottishRitebodies.TheShabobdoesthatfortheShrine. ThedininghallatFremontLodge#97wasspotlessandthetablesettingsgavetheappearanceofanelegantbanquethall.TheMasterwasabundleofnervesasheawaitedthearrivalofthefirstguestsoftheevening.ThiswasthelonganticipateddinnerforthelocalFirstResponders,FireandPolice.ThiswasachancefortheLodgetoexpressourappreciationandthatofthecommunity.Asexpected,thedinnerwasagreatsuccessandfunandfellowshipwasenjoyedbyall.ThiswasFremontLodge'sfirstattemptinalongtimetoengagethepublicandexplainthepurposeofourfraternity. WhenyouvisitthequaintlittleLodgeatCoalCreek,youcannowascendtotheupperlevelinmodernstyle.AbequestfromourbelovedBrotherLangill,whopassedawayrecently,enabledtheLodgetoinstallamuchneededchairlift.HisloveofMasonrylivesoninhelpingothersattendLodgewhomaynothavebeenabletootherwise.
Musings from the Blue Lodges ThefirstmeetingofFremontLodgeinMarchwasawesome.BrothersfromTrinidad,PuebloandColoradoSpringsswelledourranksto36members.TheBrethrenwerehonoredwiththepresenceofPastGrandMasterJosephHadadandPastGrandMasterofCrypticMasons,NormanL.Lane.TheShrinewasrepresentedbyIll.SirGarySears,PotentateofAlKaly,whowasaccompaniedbyPastPotentate,IllSirBillSheard.TherewasnotenoughroomintheEasttoaccommodateallofthePastMastersandtheyelectedtoremainwiththeCraft.Thiswasamostenjoyableandinformativemeeting.MostworshipfulGMJoeHadadgaveaninspiringtalkandclosedthemeetinginampleform.
SilvercliffeLodge#38sawthepassingofoneofitspillarsoftheLodgeandaBrotherthatwillbegreatlymissed.PastMasterBruceNardinlosthisbattlewithcancerbuthewillliveoninourhearts.Remember,weoweittoBrotherslikeNardinandLangilltodoallinourpowertokeeptheBlueLodgesactive.

OneoftheimportantthingsthatIhavelearnedisthedeepgratitudethefamiliesandtheirchildrenhavefortheservicesextendedbytheShrinerHospitalsforChildrenandtheShriners.Theyappreciateourefforts.Efforts?Well,wesupportparades,Clubs,Units,theTransportationFundandnumerousotherShrineractivities.HowthistranslatestotheShrinerfamiliesiswhatthesearticlesonShrinerKidsareallabout.Tellingtheirstoriesandperhapshelpinganotherfamily,anotherchild.WhatShrinersdomakesadifferencetothequalityoflifeofthesechildrenandtheirfamilies. RecentlyIvisitedwiththeMoppfamily,Brian,LisaandtheirchildrenCrystalandJacob.Jacobissixandinfirstgradeandfullofenergyandcuriosity.TherewasabicyclerampandabikeinthefrontyardwhenIarrived.BrianhadbuiltitforJacobandwasthinkingitwastimetobuildanotherlargerone.Thisisforachildwhowasbornwithaclubfootthatwascastedforthefirsttimewhenhewastwodaysold.AsJacobzippedaroundandplayed,therewassimplynoevidenceofhiseverhavingsuchaproblem. ThewonderlusthasonceagaininvadedtheFremontShrineClubandwehavemovedourmeetingsontotheCountryClub.Itisthesametimeandformat,firstSundayofthemonthat4pm.TheCountryClubgivesusmorespaceandprivacy.Theviewisspectacularandthefoodandserviceisgreat.Ofcourse,thePresidenthadthesameoldtiredjokes.Wehadafungroupandanoverwhelmingturnoutof36members.Our50/50drawingisalwayspopular.ThismeetingwasenhancedbyhomemadegiftbasketsdonatedbyDianneBrownandKathyJudy.NoblePaulMonohandonatedanantiquesilverteaset.PaulclaimedthatthesetwasmadebyPaulRevere.Allthemembersquestionedthis. Wewerehonoredtohaveamongourguests,Ill.SirSteveJordanandLadyDeborah.IllSirStevemeanssomuchtousfortworeasons:1)HeisthepastPotentateand2)Hehasencouragedandsupportedusfromdayone.HecheeredusonwhenwehadfiveorsixmembersandwewerewonderingifFremontShrineClubwasworthreviving.Stevewouldlaughandslapusonthebackandtellusthatthingswouldgetbetter.Hemissedveryfewmeetingsinthebeginningandhispresencegaveustheincentivetokeepgoing.BackingIll.SteveinthoseearlydayswasIll.SirBillSheardandLadyIrene.Theywerealwaystheretogivedirectionandencouragement.Justknowingthattheywerethere,wasastabilizingfactor.Throughtheseefforts,ourclubnowstandsat46members.Wewerehonoredwithourlatestaddition,NobleJimStiversandLadyCindy. Thediscussionatthemeeting,centeredonfundraisersforthecomingyear.Theideaofanauctionisstillbeingbatteredaround.Althoughwehaven'tputallthepiecestogetheryet.NobleKenMorsehasabandandisquiteanentertainer.Heisanaccomplishedsongwriterandhas23songsintheLibraryofCongress.KenwillputonaConcertfortheClubonJuly7thand8th.Ticketswillcost$15/person–however,youwillbelimitedtofivepermember,haha.Detailstofollow.NobleMarvinBrownhadaveryintriguingsuggestion,collectingscrapmetal.Heelaboratedonthehighpriceofmetalatthistime.Themembersthoughtthistobeafantasticidea. SpringhascometothePuebloShrineClub.ThatmeansseveralthingsincludingtheSpringrentalsarebeginningagain,theyardwillsoonneedtobemowedandweededperiodicallyandvacationswillsoonstart.Inotherwordswearejustlikeafamily;someofuswilldoinsidework,somewilldooutsideworkandsomewillbegonesomeofthetime.Allinalltheworkwillbedoneandwewillbeslappingeachotheronthebackforjobswelldone. Wehaveexperiencedadishearteningcoupleofmonthsconcerningourmonthlymeetings.ItsnowedthedaybeforeorthedayofthemeetinginFebruaryandagaininMarch.Duetothat,wewereVERYshortofmouthstoconsumethedeliciousmealspreparedbyourcaterer,Lara.Now,thatwaswonderfulifyouwereinattendance,asquantitieswereanythingbutlimitedandseconds(andeventake-homes)wereavailable.However,thispresentsuswithamonetarydilemma.Whenweorder42dinnersand20peopleshowup…well,wecan’tjustsay“King’sX”tothecaterer,wehavetopayfor42dinnerswhichcausesustopayoutmorethanwetakein.Uptonowwehavenotaskedforpaymentfordinnerreservationsifyouwerenotabletocometothemeetingafterall,andwedonotwishtostartthatpractice.Wedoaskthatyouarefairlycertainyouwillbeabletoattendwhenyoumakethereservationsandcallassoonasyourealizeyoucan’tmakeit.Thiswaywecanadjustthecountrightuptothelastminute…thisgalisreallygreattoworkwithinthisrespect!!Thanksforyourhelpindoingthis,wegreatlyappreciateit. WelcomeaboardtothetwonewmembersoftheClowns:GeorgeHamburg,whocomesfrombackinPennsylvaniaandTomParkwhojustbecameaShrinerthispastJanuary.WewelcomebothoftheseNoblestotheUnit.I’llgiveyoumoreabouttheseclownsinfuturearticles. SpringisSpringingupAllOver,andtheAlKalyShrineBandisgetting“IntheMood”! InarecentperformancebytheAlKalyBand’sSwingingShrinersattheVillageatSkyline,theperformersbroughtinsomeadditionalcashfortheALKalyShrineTransportationFund,tothetuneofseveralGlennMillerarrangements,withsongssuchas“MoonlightSerenade”and“Pennsylvania6-5000”,andsomeoldiesandgoodiesdancenumbersfromothercomposers.WealsobroughtinsomeadditionalrecognitionfortheShrinerswhoarealwaysoutinthecommunityhereinSouthernColoradodoinggood.IntheBandwe’vegotsomethingforeveryone,withlotsofopportunitiesforplayingateveryperformancelevel. Duringthispastmonth,wealsoputsmilesonthefacesoftheresidentsinaperformanceattheVeteran’sHomeinWalsenburg,andbroughttearstotheeyesofattendeesattheSaintPatrick’sDayparadeinColoradoSprings(orwasthatviceversa?).BandperformancesandmakingmusicbyShrinershasbeenaroundalmostsincetheinceptionofShrinedom,andShrinerslovetogettogethertomakemusicwithotherShrinerslikeattheCentralStatesShrineAssociationgatherings–thisyearit’shostedbytheElKahirShrineatCedarRapidsIowaon8-11August. TheAlKalyShrineBandistheoldestunitinAlKaly.Ourrehearsalsareon2ndTuesdaysand4thSundays,andweplayforalltheStatedMeetings.Ourmemberscomefromallkindsofbackgroundsandexperiences:formerschoolbanddirectors,militarymusicians,othersofvariedmusicalexperiences,andevensomefolksthathavealwayswantedtoplay,butjustnevergotthechancebefore.Weloveparadesandgettingtogethertohavefun.

Converting an IRA to a RothQ: Dear Tom - I know that the $100,000 earnings limit was removed in 2010, allowing everyone to convert an IRA to a Roth. Is the same true
for 2011 and beyond regardless of income?
A: The answer is yes. The Tax Increase Prevention and Reconciliation Act (TIPA) signed into law on May 17, 2006 permanently eliminated all
Roth IRA conversion income limits and filing status eligibility restrictions, effective 2010.
What is this thing call a Roth? The Roth IRA is similar to a “Traditional IRA” except that when withdrawals are made, they are “Tax Exempt” (free)
One of the few tax advantages our Government gives us is the Roth IRA. There are a number of complexities, but the bottom line is that you don’t pay taxes on the withdrawal.
There is a process for converting a traditional IRA, 401(k) and the other retirement plans to a Roth to get tax free income Call me. I can guide you through the minefield.
If you expect that taxes will increase in the years ahead, you might want to consider this conversion now while the tax rate is relatively low.
