Avoiding Lashon Hara on the Campaign TrailThis month, we read in the Torah aboutmtzora, aperson suffering a skin affliction. The Talmud tellsus to read this word as an acrostic formotzi shem ra, one who slanders another. Slander, what inHebrew is calledlashon hara (evil speech) affectsthe insides of the speaker and the listener as surely as a skin affliction affects our outsides.

Political campaigns are full of harsh rhetoric. Thewords of Finley Peter Dunne a century ago remaintrue: Politics aint beanbag. Yet there are timeswhen words go beyond normal political discourseto slanderous lies. When that happens, thoseslanders need to be addressed.

I do not write to endorse or oppose any candidate. You will make your own decisions. I do writebecause there appears to be a campaign to spreadlashon hara throughout the Jewish community. Ihave received e-mails about how Barack Obama isan enemy of Israel and the Jews. He may be thebest candidate, or he may be the worst. Thats not

important. What is important is that our decisionscannot be based on scare tactics.

In January, leaders of the American Jewishcommunity wrote an open letter decrying hatefulemails that use falsehoods and innuendo tomischaracterize Senator Barack Obamas religiousbeliefs and who he is as a person. The letter wassigned by officials at organizations representing awide range of beliefs within the Jewish community.

They include leadersof the Union of Orthodox JewishCongregations of

America, the SimonWiesenthal Center, the Anti-DefamationLeague, the AmericanJewish Committee, and the Religious ActiCenter of Reform Judaism. The full text ofletter can be found online at

    http://rac.org/Articles/index.cfm?id=2631&ge_prg_id=10214.

Statements will continue to be made abouteach candidates positions on issuesimportant to the Jewish community, especiconcerning Israel. Each of us will have toassess the credibility of those statements. Agood way to do this is to see how each of tcandidates is regarded by the Jewishcommunity in his or her home. As the letteconcludes, in words that I endorse, We ureveryone to make that decision [of who wimake the best president] based on the facturecords of these candidates, and nothingless. If we do that, then we shall be sparethe damaging effects of lashon hara.

HVAC update Can you imagine your heating bills actually going down? Well, at Temple Ohabei Shalom year, they have. We have recently done some important heating system work that has alreresulted in lower heating bills this year despite an increase in energy costs! As part of ourtinuing effort to reduce expenditures, we have taken important steps to improve our heati

ventilation and air conditioning system with the result that we have already realized savinthis year in heating costs compared with last year. I would like to thank Ed Jacobs, KathyJonas, Barry Lyons and Karen Landman for their assistance with this energy and cost-savwork. So when you get those warm feelings at our temple, it may be in part due to our improved heating system!

    Warm regards, Len Davidson

    Updates

We have been a very busy congregationlately! March may have been a record-

setting month, featuring the talent of Storahtelling, an OSTY-hosted danceattended by over 200 teens from all over theregion, the first of our Friday Night Lightsprograms featuring the always-popular Mark Lipof, an ADL speaker, our Purim shpiel and carnival, oursisterhood and brotherhood Shabbat services, and the Hips onFire salsa night. In addition, we continue to enjoy Torah study, adult education classes, our regular daily minyan services andShabbat services and all of our other regularly scheduledprograms. Whew!

The reaction to these events, not surprisingly, has been greatenthusiasm and an appreciation of how good it is to be together. The Shabbat dinners in particular have brought families togetherto celebrate that all-too-rare modern occurrence of rest, relaxation, and really good company, enhanced by great foodand thought-provoking programs. Hinei mah tov umah naim, shevet achim gam yachad. How truly good and pleasant it is forus to be together as a community.

These events do not merely happen. They take a lot of work.Fortunately we are blessed with congregants and staff who haveworked hard to make them so successful. Our committees havedone a great jobthe community committee chaired by Amy Tishelman, and Cathryn Stein who brought us the idea of Friday Night Lights, the adult learning committee chaired by DanDeykin, who brought us Storahtelling, the staff at ARS and ourown high-schoolers, who took on a regional dance upon shortnotice and, with Kate Mikesh in the lead, made the dance acreative, fun and wonderful night to remember. Kim Singer wrotean enchanted Purim shpiel and Adrienne Shishko volunteered toorganize the muy caliente (very hot!) Hips on Fire event.Kudos as well to the Brotherhood and Sisterhood for theirorganizational talent and support to lead us in prayer.

There are many others who supported these events, includingour office staff and numerous volunteers. We should bejustifiably proud of these events and the spirit and effort thatwent into them. The success that we have enjoyed reminds us of how much we can enjoy being together. As we prepare tocelebrate the holiday of Passover, and are reminded of how difficult times can be, we are especially appreciative of the goodfortune and great people that we have here at Ohabei Shalom. To all who help make our congregation such an exciting place tobe, thank you!

In the last issue of Tidings, I wroteabout our synagogue community.Im sure it comes as a surprise tono one that there is such a strong

tradition of community within Juda-ism. But this sense of shared ex-perience and communal achieve-ment is no minor characteristic. Itpermeates our tradition. In order to perform a complete rit-ual service, we must have aminyan . Private prayer is valued, but in order to say Kaddish, to read Torah publicly or to say the full Amidah out loud, we must be in the company of oth-ers. This requirement is not put in place to forbid a mournerfrom saying Kaddish privately, but rather to highlight the im-portance of being amongst others at this time of loss. Theuniquely Jewish mode of studying inchevruta also exemplifiesthe value of working with others. The entirety of the Talmudconsists of shared scholarship. We rarely see R. Akiva sittingalone in his room. The wisdom of our tradition comes fromcommunal study and debate. Differences of opinion are cele-brated and result in a greater depth of understanding. To putit simply, two heads are better than one.

The same is true of musical experience I want to take thisopportunity to thank and appreciate the musicians withwhom I share thebimah every week. Together we are able tocreate wonderful music, the catalyst for moving worship forour entire community.

On Friday nights, Andy OConnell and Sara Piazza enlivenand enrich our services through their beautiful guitar playing, fhey are volunteers to boot! Andy is a phenomenal musicianwhose inventiveness, style and skill come through with every note he plays. He has the uncanny ability to add just the rightcolor or musical detail to a particular musical prayer at thespur of the moment. We are all lucky that he chooses toshare his talents and his soul with us each week.

Sara Piazzas style on the guitar is quite different than Andys; her playing complements his perfectly. Sara shares

with us great skill on the guitar, but so much more as well: a vast knowledge of Jewish music, a beautiful singing voice, and moving compositions of her own. Ultimately, Sara bringsher vibrant spirit to our congregation on Shabbat eve.On Saturday mornings (and High Holidays and Festivals andconcerts!), David Sparr brings his talent on the piano, butalso his deep connection to Judaism and Ohabei Shalom. His

versatility and musicality shine through his playing, but they dont tell the complete story of his involvement. David di-rects our High Holiday choir, arranges much of our music, rehearses the volunteer choir, sat on the Cantorial search

committee and so much more. His medium is music, butwhat he shares with me and this congregation transcends hgreat musical talent.

I feel blessed to collaborate with three such fine musiciansand people. I may be the one who sings the words of ourblessings most often, but in fine Jewish tradition, together ware able to create the beautiful music and spiritual prayer thnone of us could alone.

The music, written for piano, violin, cello, cantor, choir and congregationreflects both Jewish tradition and contemporary worship practices. It combines elements of eastern European chazzanutand modes, nusach, biblical chant, niggunim, classical andtwentieth century Reform repertoire, Israeli/Middle-Easternelements, and contemporary jazz/ pop styles. "I have not in-corporated these elements solely for the sake of diversity, butrather in recognition of the multitude of styles of music pre-sent in contemporary Reform worship. My goal is not to reinvent Reform worship, but rather to reflect current Reformideology and practice through innovative and affective music

while involving the congregation completely as a communityworshippers."

Why is this nightdifferent?Shari Churwin,Education Director There are so many wonderful lessonsembedded in the way that we are com-manded to tell the story of Passover. Rabbi Jonathan Sackswrote, there's one thing about Passover that made all thedifference. It's the story we teach our children. It takes placenot in the synagogue but in the home. And we can't begintelling the story until a child, or the youngest person pre-sent, asks a question.

Passover is truly a holiday that we can make our own; a holi-day that we can infuse with personal stories, traditions andfamily memories. My childhood memories of Passover in-clude sitting under the seder table with my cousins, countingmatzah balls with my Aunt Judy (one year we needed to rollmore than 150 matzah balls) and searching and searchingfor the afikoman (in all of the years that I searched, I only found it once). As we were the youngest, it was always leftto my sister and me to read the four questions. (Jodi, my sisiter has been saying them for 15 or so years and is look-ing forward to this year as Hannah, my daughter, is planningto sing them for the first time).

A Full PlateKate Mikesh,Director of Informal Education

My personal countdown has already begun. In just a few weeks Ill be

sitting around my familys Passovertable, having horseradish eatingcontests with my siblings and cousins (first one to make aface after eating a spoonful loses!) and pretending to com-plain about being the perpetual youngest child whos beenreciting the Four Questions for 20 years or so.

Its not just the time spent with my family that has me an-ticipating my favorite holiday. We all know that any Jewishgathering must revolve around food and that I love any event that encourages overeating. Im the kind of girl whoalways takes a full plate. Just ask Jason who makes us alldinner at Monday Night School. Throw a trough of mashed potatoes out there and Ill pile them on my plateand certainly go back for seconds.

This love of piling things on has spilled over into my lifehere at TOS and I couldnt be happier. Its been a non-stop string of amazing events that have kept me busy these last few months. Ive survived shul-in season onceagain this year and could go on for pages about the amaz-ing experiences we shared with the children of the ARS.Willy Wonka, Harry Potter and the Time Machine whiskedour students away to places unknown. We once againhosted over 200 7th and 8th graders from around thenortheast region during the 18th Annual Junior RegionalShul-in. Our own kids were perfect hosts and made a slew of new friends as they explored the theme WhoAmI.com.

Just as we were wrapping up our shul-in season, it wasunexpectedly, yet happily, extended an extra week. Just 7days after our grade 1 and 2 families spent the night in thesanctuary, we opened our doors, and dance floor, to over200 high school students for the NFTY Northeast Re-

gional Dance. I was so proud of the hard work our teen-agers put into transforming Penn-Spero Hall into a sum-mer camp, complete with arts & crafts, waterfront andcampfire. Lissner Hall became a very authentic lookingbunk where kids gathered to spend time with old NFTY friends and make new ones.

The next exciting project on my plate is a new program forour incoming grade 7 girls. Well be starting our ownRosh Hodesh: Its a Girl Thing! group here at Ohabei Sha-lom.Rosh Hodesh: Its a Girl Thing! is the first proactive,

informal education program that uses Judaism to enrich thlives of young women. It draws on Jewish tradition to givegirls a place to feel safe, articulate their questions and con-cerns, have fun, and be real with their peers. I encourage agrade 6 mothers and daughters to attend our informationalsession on April 13 to learn about this unique opportunity which the girls can participate in the fall.

As you can see the opportunities to participate in excitingprogramming at TOS are endless and the hard work neverstops. Im blessed to be able to see the immediate benefitsmy efforts as Im surrounded by such supportive families aappreciative students. As we begin to look towards the endof the school year, I encourage you and your family to loadup your plate with Jewish experiencesand dont forget thsecond helpings!
