A Royal Makeover

T his Week:

While the Royal on Baker has, in the past, undergone a huge transformation, they’re set to make changes yet again! We checked in with Paul Hendrichs, manager and booking guru, to find out what’s on the horizon.

Word has it there are some changes for the Royal - what kind of renovations are we looking at? The plan is to expand the lower level. Right now we have a lobby and coffee shop at the front entrance and we will be taking down the walls to make a much bigger room. Essentially, the downstairs will be a big square room. Hopefully we will be able to build a mezzanine lengthwise above where the sound booth and office is now, going wall to wall, which will allow for a much bigger capacity.

Don’t Bark At The Dog! LegoLandMASON, Ohio — A Mason man has been charged with teasing a police dog.

According to a police report, Officer Bradley Walker was responding to a crash at the Mason Pub early Sunday morning when his K-9 officer, Timber, began barking.

Walker said he observed 25-year-old Ryan Stephens with his face about 2 inches from the rear window of the police vehicle, barking and hissing at Timber.

When Walker questioned Stephens about why he was barking at the dog, Stephens replied, “He started it. He was harassing me.”

Walker said he believed Stephens was intoxicated because he smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred.

Stephens is to appear April 21 in municipal court on a misdemeanor citation of willfully teasing a police K-9 officer.

Walker said it’s dangerous to incite the dogs while they’re locked inside the vehicle.

“Everything is metal in here, and a dog could easily get his tooth caught in one of these grates here and rip his tooth out and cause severe dental trauma to get at one of these people that is harassing him,” Walker said.

Walker said it’s also dangerous to the person doing the harassing.

“If the door was actually left unlocked or something, and a drunk individual or an intoxicated individual opens the door, he has a very good likelihood of getting bit,” Walker said. the dogs while they’re locked inside the vehicle.

Everyone makes mistakes, but when you make them in a paper you get to keep staring at them for the next arduous seven days.

Last week we had a misprint with a couple show dates, and when I got a message from a friend about it I got that initial ting of panic. There it was, two shows with wrong dates, and though they were correct in the show listings section we felt we had to make amends.

Since all the copies were printed, that whole “stop the presses” drama was out. We got back in our truck after delivering all of the copies, picked them up, reprinted off the revised sheet, bought a staple puller and for the next 6 hours set to pulling about 3000 staples (though I may have lost count) and stapled the revised page back in. I will admit

T h e S e v e n D a y M i s t a k ea few copies may have been crumpled with excessive vigor while pulling out stubborn staples. The paper was then redistributed error “freeish”.

We could make a lot of excuses, but that doesn’t change the result and it was a good lesson learned. I apologize if anyone got an early copy and because of it, missed a show. We’re trying our best to get it 100 percent and from time to time we will slip up but, just so you know, it’s not for a lack of trying. We hope to never have to pull a staple again!

Pledge To Make A Difference On Earth Day

420 Defined This Wednesday is the annual 420 celebrations. Everyone you ask, seems to have a different interpretation of what the day means. We thought we’d get the Wikipedia definition to clarify.

420, 4:20 or 4/20 (pronounced four-twenty) refers to consumption of cannabis and, by extension, a way to identify oneself with cannabis subculture. The notable day for these is April 20. (Not to be confused with J-Day, an international protest held on the first Saturday of May.)

The term was allegedly coined by a group of teenagers in San Rafael, California in 1971. Calling themselves the Waldos, because “their chosen hang-out spot was a wall outside the school,”

The group first used the term in connection to a fall 1971 plan to search for an abandoned cannabis crop that they had learned about. The Waldos designated the Louis Pasteur statue on the grounds of San Rafael High School as their meeting place, and 4:20 p.m. as their meeting time. The Waldos referred to this plan with the phrase “4:20 Louis”. Multiple failed attempts to find the crop eventually shortened their phrase to simply “4:20”, which ultimately evolved into a codeword the teens used to mean pot-smoking in general.

High Times Creative Director Steven Hager was the first person to track down the Waldos and publish their account of the origins of the term. Hager wrote “Are You Stoner Smart or Stoner Stupid?” (October 1998) in which he called for 4:20 PM to be the socially accepted hour of the day to consume cannabis. “I believe 420 is a ritualization of cannabis use that holds deep meaning for our subculture,” wrote Hager. “It also points us in a direction for the responsible use of cannabis.”

A Royal Makeover ContHaving the mezzanine will give people a different vantage point of the show. That’s a big part of the renovations – to appeal to everyone. The way the room is set up now there is limited seating when it’s a full house. This addition will give more people a place to sit, enjoy the show, see the stage and dance floor and not feel crammed in. It will just be more relaxed upstairs.

What are you hoping for capacity and what are the stumbling blocks you have to clear to be able to go forward? The stumbling blocks are new to me everyday. You get through one hurdle and there’s a new one. City planning has a lot to do with it. The City Building Department and the Liquor Board will all have a say on our capacity. Capacity is typically based on square footage and available washrooms; there are a few variables that go into it. With the square footage that we are looking at we hope to be in the high 200s for capacity. It all depends. The drawings are done, everything’s been submitted, we are just waiting on City Council to vote on May 9 and then we we will know if we can proceed with expanding The Royal. If everything goes according to your plan, when would you be able to start swinging hammers? End of April is our target date to start demolition. April 27 will be last event in here and we will shut it down for just over three weeks. At that point, assuming everything goes swimmingly and if we get the permits in time, three weeks isn’t a lot of time to build a mezzanine and knock down a bunch of walls but we are hoping to have the mezzanine at least partially built and and the main bar fully functional in that time, so that we would be able to reopen. Afterwards it will take us a few more weeks to get the mezzanine furnished and completely up to our standards. Grand reopening would be in June or July.

You announced 20 shows in ten hours last weekend, and some amazing acts. What are a few of the shows coming over the next few months that you are most excited about or the biggest scores you feel you got? Its funny... the ones I usually get excited for are the ones nobody really knows about. It’s me asking a personal favor to come to town. But some of the big ones: it’s great that John Mayall is coming, that’s a really big deal. He is a blues legend who has inspired guys like Eric Clapton. The more famous blues legends of our generation look up to guys like John Mayall and Leon Russell. These gentlemen are getting older and in their 70’s but are still coming to play a 300 person bar in Nelson. The 20 shows was more of an experiment to see what would happen. You can follow how people react when you announce one show here and one show there and you’ll usually get good feedback, but when we dropped 20 shows, everything exploded. The announcement blitz became an event in itself. We set records for our Facebook and web site activity. (www.liveattheroyal.com) Leon Russell was a part of one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the past year where he teamed up with Elton John (The Union), so to see him at this point in a venue of this size is impressive. Absolutely. He played Nelson a few years ago. Kind of got a luke-warm reaction. He may have just had an off show. I’m hoping with what he’s gone through recently with Elton John has helped; he seems to have a bit more life in his step. I’m really looking forward to that one! Also I’m really looking forward to Blue King Brown at the end of June. They’re an Australian, urban-roots kind of band, very politically driven. A lot of fun. A great party band. We’ve got a ton of stuff going on!

Tell us more about the Capitol Series, what exactly is that? Since we are a lively bar as well as a great live music venue, some shows aren’t necessarily best-suited

rural alBerta advantage, live at the royal april 6Photo courtesy of AdriAn Morin PhotogrAPhy

to be at The Royal. Sometimes we get artists who insist on a completely silent crowd, and people who want to sit down and fully absorb what’s happening. So we are working with Capitol Theatre to co-present some shows. We book the shows and then take them to The Capitol. So we have Leo Kottke May 25, who will be the first one in that series. He’s amazing and it’s a real thrill to be able to bring him to The Capitol to launch this series. We like to rock at The Royal, but The Capitol series will be a little more sophisticated, quieter shows. We’ve also booked Judy Collins, in

November, who is a living legend, a very respected woman and artist. It’s a real privilege to be able to work together with another venue and have them be open to what we are trying to do. They recognize the talent we want to bring in and they have opened their doors to us. I think that’s a very good thing for this community.

With five albums full of Canadian lore, Hus is a voice for the working folk, for the college kids, and for moms and dads making ends meet. A gripping story teller and entertainer, Hus quickly captures his audiences across Canada. Also known as Slocan Slim or the Kootenay Kid, Hus’s stories and songs depict the roads he has

traveled, and the people who create the places he’s been.Hus’s band will be joined by fiddler extraordinaire Billy McInnis. Tickets on sale at Koothenay Coop Radio, Sunnyside Natural in Kaslo and at the door. Show time 7:30pm

There are those pet-lovers for whom a cat is too conventional and a mutt simply too mundane. But it appears they wouldn’t turn up their nose at a skunk.

For, perhaps surprisingly given the black-and-white mammals’ penchant for causing a pong, they are the latest must-have furry friend.

Owners are undeterred by the strong scent the animals can release when threatened, saying they are cleaner than dogs or cats.

Breeders estimate that there are around 2,000 kept as domestic pets, and demand is increasing.

One woman paid £375 ($585 CDN) for her pet, who is 17in long, and weighs 10lb, but skunks can cost up to £1,500 ($2340 CDN) in a shop.

The mother-of three, who already has two dogs, 13 guinea pigs, three rabbits and two hamsters, says her children Ella, eight, Alfie, five, and 19-month-old Maisie dote on their new pet.

She said: ‘Most nights he will crawl up and sleep on my shoulder and snuggle into my neck.

‘He’s incredibly affectionate and sociable. He follows the kids around

A PHEW FACTS - Skunks are members of the weasel family and live an average of ten years but sometimes up to 20. - They can vary in length from 15-37” and weigh up to 18 lbs. - The Animal Welfare Act bans the removal of their scent glands. - Skunks spray a liquid when they feel threatened. The odour, similar to rotten eggs or garlic, is enough to ward off bears and other attackers. - As babies, they are nocturnal, but can adapt to their owners’ sleeping patterns when older -The species is native to the Americas, Indonesia and the Phillippines. - Although they can bite when young, with good training and handling they can be taught to stop.

Raven is a 12-week old black lab puppy looking for a home. She is friendly with people, cats, and other dogs, and very, very smart, already well-trained by her foster Mom. Call the Kootenay Animal Assistance Program (KAAP) at 250-551-1053 or visit www.homes4animals.com.

Cleaning Purse Pays Off Big $$$

FAIRBURN, Ga. — A Georgia woman’s decision to clean out her purse paid off in a big way when she found an old lottery ticket worth $189,302. Fifty-five-year-old Rhonda Williams of Fairburn says she found the winning Fantasy 5 ticket in the bottom of her purse after cleaning it out over the weekend. WSB-TV reports that the ticket is from a Jan. 17 drawing. Williams picked all of the winning numbers: 18, 25, 28, 29, 35. Williams says she plans to pay off bills and may take a cruise.

Matt Epp & The Amorian Assembly Interview Alpha Yaya Diallo5 Alarm Funk sunday royal on BaKer With a new album & band, Matt is set to take flight. In a flooded field of folk & rock artists, his affecting live shows and songwriting abilities set him apart. As a critics darling the masses are soon to discover what the buzz is all about.

You guys just got a new RV, what were you driving before, and did it have a name? Ya, actually I just gave it away. The last van was called Epp Force One. It had about 400,000 kms on it. We gave it to the Kidney Foundation because on our last tour we didn’t have reverse or second gear.

I remember you guys were struggling with your vehicle when you were in Nelson last. That was Epp Force One, we had to watch where we parked.

You’ve come a long way in your careers, when you first started playing live, you really weren’t that good were you? No actually I was a really bad singer and guitar player and song writer.

And now with 5 albums and hundreds of shows under your belt you’ve gained a name as a great live act. What do you hope people take away from a Matt Epp concert? The desire to sing and the earnest hasn’t changed from the beginning – the intention was good it’s just I’ve developed the muscles, skills, comfort level and the healthy nervous energy that comes from playing live and hoping you connect with people. I hope people understand that when they come to a show that this is something authentic and also realize they are seeing the best band in the world right now. I hope they catch that – that’s how I feel about the guys I’ve got on the stage with me especailly this time. I’m really excited about it and feel I couldn’t have a better group of guys. I hope people understand the earnestness that it comes from the heart and the caliber and spirited musicianship that they are going to see.

This album, Matt Epp and the Amorian Assembly. What is the Amorian Assembly exactly? It is basically a core of people that like to collaborate. So Amoria is my made up place, sort of. We have a flag and its

“It is the springtime of my funkiness!” As the earliest flowers gingerly poke their heads from beneath the soil, I have to declare we’ve had our share of funk shows in town recently. Maceo Parker dropped the bomb at Spiritbar two nights in a row, leaving my legs rubbery from grooving hard on the dance floor. By the time you read this, I will be in full recovery mode from the two nights of Fishbone, definitely a funky band. Next up, Vancouver’s own Five Alarm Funk, making feet move around the West Coast for over six years.

Lead by drummer Tayo Branston, this eleven piece group has a thick and layered sound that fills the speakers with irresistible dance music. A four-piece horn section blasts you from one side of the stage, while a four-piece percussion section pounds out the groove, complimented by two guitars and deep bass grooves.

Expanding their musical boundaries, they released the genre-splicing Anything Is Possible last July; while each track has an undeniable funk backbone, explorations into prog rock, world beat, and Afro-jazz has pushed this groove juggernaut into new territory. If I have any tread left on my dancin’ shoes, I’ll be checking this one out Saturday!

Born in the African nation of Guinea, a young Alpha traveled with his surgeon father to many different locales in West Africa. Distinct rhythms and melodies from each region influenced him greatly, and he was soon adapting these syncopations onto his new guitar. A university education lead him to being an “in demand” session player; soon he was invited to join the African group Fatala, who had relocated to Europe to record for Peter Gabriel’s Real World record label.

After a West Coast tour in 1991, Alpha decided to leave the group and settle permanently in Vancouver. Backed by his band Bafing, his performances garnered rave reviews and his recording career took off; since 1993 he has received three Juno nominations and two wins in the Best Global Album category, one win in Best Global Independent, as well as numerous nominations and wins at the West Coast Music Awards. A unique performer, amazing vocalist, and exceptional guitarist, Alpha takes the audience on a journey, singing in four languages and expertly blending the ancient with the contemporary. Don’t miss this internationally acclaimed act, now touring behind his latest album, Imme.

meant to kind of replace a naturalist idea and you can decide to identify with it and you can become an Amorian. So we’re just an assembly of Amorians and anyone can be part of it and anyone can jump on a band wagon, if you will. We like collaboration as a group, for instance our guitar player, Jay Smith, is an incredible song writer – his debut record is one of my favorite things. He’s not only opening the shows but playing as part of the band. It feels like a marriage of four, we’re all separate forms, come from different directions but operate as one.

On the new album, songs like Trap Me and Come To My House really seem to have a definite “guitarist up” kind of vibe. Did you plan on turning things up when you went into the studio? No. I don’t think we planned on that. I think that we knew what we had with Trap Me. It was starting to take shape I turned up the volume a bit on those because I had to rely on more music and dynamic. When I was in Spain and couldn’t rely on the English language I think that’s why that direction came about. We didn’t really know what was going to happen when we went to the studio. Especially with Come to my House, that was a big surprise when we had the Eber Brothers who are also Ronnie Hawkins band, The Hawks, when they were coming through town we’d played a show in Calgary with them and they came in and set up mics on all of our gear. Nine musicians played live for that track so we had no idea what would happen when we pressed “record”.

You’ve got your entire library streaming at mattepp.com the traditional theory is that could hurt album sales, why do you stream all your songs for free? I think people right now want to know what they are getting into. Nobody wants to buy a record that has one song being pushed and doesn’t know whats happening with the other nine. People are used to being taken advantage of by the record company where they have one great single or two great singles and then the rest is filler garbage. I think people need to know what they are getting in to. They can stream it on YouTube and people are doing that anyway. So if you draw them into your website, if it’s good, they’ll buy it.

April is National Poetry Month! (and it doesn’t have to rhyme)

Established in Canada in April 1999 by the League of Canadian Poets, National Poetry Month brings together poets and poetry-lovers from across the country through readings and other events. Visit our display. The Nelson area is blessed with poets! These local poets have books in the Nelson Library:

Canada’s celebrated poets exhibit skill, insight, craft, artistry, and talent, to be sure. But it’s okay to unleash your own inner poet anywhere, any time. Poetry is good for you!

In celebration of National Poetry Month, why not write a Haiku? Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry. Haiku in Japanese is a gentle form consisting of 17 “moras” in three phrases of five, seven, and five. In English, a “mora” is translated as a syllable, and so Haikus are most often three lines of five, seven, and five syllables.

Thank Dog It’s FridayMiscellaneous observations, recommendations, issues and what-have-yous worth considering or not this week in Nelson

Observed: Evenings in the Alley. Nelson’s alleys have a lot to offer for an evening stroll. Interesting architecture of old houses, rambling gardens and hidden retreats, stone walls and unusual artistic creations. For those with a wandering soul and an eye for the unexpected, spend an early evening behind the scene (not recommended after dark – skunks rule once the sun goes down)

Be-Cause: Fish Farming & Wild Salmon West Coast wild salmon activist, Alexandra Morton, has been advocating for protection of wild salmon and the monitoring of fish farms along BC’s west coast.

Visit www.wildsalmonpeople.ca to learn about management issues associated with this natural resource.

Yum: Fabulous food to check out in Nelson and area. If the weather’s warm enough, Full Circle Café, corner of Baker and Stanley streets, opens up it’s outdoor corner patio. Break your fast with Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict - only one of so many favourites! Going with a friend? Share a Grilled Grapefruit with maple syrup drizzle and yogurt and granola as a starter. So many choices, so limited stomach space.

A plastic screen that rolls up and doesn’t crack when you drop it may sound like science fiction, but the Flexible Display Center at Arizona State University is investing millions to liberate electronic devices from the constraints of rigid glass.

And reality could come sooner than you think.

“Flexible ... black-and-white screens for e-readers are very close to commercialization,” said Nick Colaneri, Flexible Display Center director. Black-and-white screens are less complicated to create, and he estimates flexible screens capable of rolling up and displaying color images are three to five years away.

Manufacturers see vast potential for consumer applications. DisplaySearch, an industry research

company, says the market for flexible screens will likely surpass $1 billion this year and reach $8.2 billion by 2018.

From the beginning, the project has been pushed along by the U.S. military, which is interested in flexible screens for their portability, durability and miserly use of power.

Switchblades Legal For Persons With One Arm

Maine - Lawmakers on Wednesday approved legalizing switchblades for people with one arm, moving close to becoming the first state to make such an exception to laws that ban use of the spring-action knives.

The bill to allow amputees and other one-armed people to carry the quick-opening knives cleared Maine’s Senate on Wednesday after passing the House on Tuesday, Senate officials said. Until now, Maine banned the use of switchblades by anyone.

In most states, carrying switchblades is illegal in most circumstances, though owning the knives may be allowed in some states. Federal law allows their use by a person with one arm only on federal property if the blade is shorter than three inches.

The Maine bill requires that the knives have a blade that is three inches or shorter.

Gov. Paul LePage is expected to sign the measure into law in the next couple of days, said spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett.
