1. Remove the four torx screws.

2. Carefully open the bottom housing in the direction of the arrow.

Note:

Cables are still attached to the logic board. Gently open the bottom housing to access the cables.

-Video cable

B -AC line filter connector

-AirPort antenna

-Hard drive/optical drive data cable

-Power supply connector

- Ground screw

4. Set the bottom housing aside.

Replacement Note:

Whenever the bottom housing is opened for service, you must

clean and reapply thermal paste to the surfaces joining the thermal interface layer. Failure to reapply this paste could cause the computer to overheat and possibly damage the internal components. Refer to the next topic, “Thermal Paste Application” for detailed information.

Thermal Paste Application

This procedure requires the following tools:• Flat-blade screwdriver or other tool to scrape off thermal paste• Plastic spatula or other object to spread the thermal paste• Thermal paste (922-4757)

Important:

Whenever the bottom housing is opened, you must clean and reapply thermal paste to both surfaces (shown above) joining the thermal interface layer. Failure to apply

this paste could cause the computer to overheat and possibly damage the internal components. Continue with the procedure below.

Procedure

1. Thoroughly clean the original thermal film from the mating surfaces (circled below) of the bottom housing and thermal pipe. Use a flat-blade screwdriver, your finger nail, or other tool to scrape the surfaces clean.

Note:

Do not use an abrasive material or liquid cleaner.

2. Squeeze a thin film of thermal paste onto each mating surface. Spread the paste evenly on each surface.

3. Replace the bottom housing. Securely fasten the four mounting torx screws very firmly (at least 17 in/lbs. is necessary).

Note:

A torx 17”/lb. screwdriver is available from Apple service for this purpose (076-0899).

Thermal Pad Installation

Important:

Whenever the logic board is removed, you must install new thermal pads to three surfaces (as shown above). Failure to apply these pads could cause the computer to overheat and possibly damage the internal components. Continue with the procedure below.

Procedure

1. Remove the old thermal pads (circled) from the bottom housing.

Note:

If you don’t see all three thermal pads on the bottom housing, check the bottom side of the logic board. The thermal pads may stick to the logic board. Either way, remove the old thermal pads.

2. Using the thermal pad kit (part number 922-xxxx), remove the clear protective backing from the new thermal pads.

3. Place the new thermal pads on the bottom housing. Press down on the blue protective backing to make sure the thermal pad has even contact with the bottom housing. There should be no air pockets.

4. Remove the blue protective backing from the new thermal pad.

Note:

Avoid unnecessary contact with either side of the thermal pad as dirt and body oils reduce the thermal pad's conductivity.

5. Holding the logic board by the battery retainer and the internal drive cable connector, slide the logic board back into the bottom housing. Do not push on the heatsink for leverage, as you could knock it off the chip.

The memory, battery, RJ-11 board, and modem are not part of the logic board service part. Remove these service parts before returning a logic board to Apple.

Before you begin, do the following:• Position the computer in the service stand.• Remove the user access plate.• Remove the bottom housing.

Procedure

1. Remove three metal torx screws and one plastic screw.

2. Grab the logic board by the edge or hold the logic board by the battery retainer and the internal drive cable connector.

3. Gently remove the logic board out of the bottom housing.

Thermal Pad Replacement

2. Disconnect the RJ-11 cable from the modem if you haven’t done so already.

3. Remove the RJ-11 board from the I/O port.

Procedure1. Remove two screws on the EMI shield. Remove the shield.

2. Remove four screws attaching the carrier assembly to the metal chassis (also known as the Faraday cage).

3. Grasp the carrier on both sides; lift and pull the carrier in the direction of the arrow. Once the carrier is out, flip the carrier to the right to disconnect the power cables. Note: The carrier can be tricky to remove because the rubber coating on the hard drive makes a snug fit into the metal chassis (also known as the Faraday cage).

4. Remove the power cables, data cables, and the four counter-sunk screws connecting the hard drive to the carrier. Remove the hard drive from the carrier assembly.

5. Remove four short-headed screws (shown by the lines) connecting the optical drive to the carrier.

6. Slide the optical drive out of the carrier. Note: The silver insulator under the optical drive is part of the carrier assembly. The mass storage data cable is a separate service part.

Blind Mate Connector: Make sure to replace the connector into the chassis just as shown above. And, when tightening the screws, the blind mate connector should have some play; do not tighten down so it doesn’t move at all.

• Remove the plastic gasket under the fan.• Remove the fan gasket.• Remove the cap neck spoke retainer.• Remove the blind mate connector screws.• Pull the neck cables through the neck ring.

Procedure1. Remove the three screws in the base of the Faraday cage. The screw at the top of the

picture is the logo screw, located under the insulator (which may already be removed).

2. Separate and lift the faraday cage from the white plastic outer housing. Important: The Faraday cage is very heavy and has sharp edges; handle with care.

Replacement Notes:

Faraday cage: During the reassembly, attach the neck plate (the round, metal plate with holes) to the top of the Faraday cage, this is keyed. Next, install the Faraday cage into the top plastic housing, and replace the three Faraday screws. Lastly, thread the neck cables through the hole in the neck plate (the round, metal plate with holes), route the neck cables correctly and replace the cap neck spoke retainer and its five screws.

Before you begin, do the following:• Position the computer in the service stand.• Remove the user access plate.• Remove the bottom housing.• Remove the drive carrier assembly.• Remove the power supply.• Remove the power supply insulators.• Remove the fan.• Remove the plastic neck cable retainer (under the fan).• Remove the fan gasket.• Remove the cap spoke holder.• Remove the blind mate connector screws.• Remove the Faraday cage.

Procedure1. Carefullu, pull the neck cables through the hole on the metal neck plate shown below.

Start with the blind mate connector and cables, then the long video cable, followed by the AirPort antenna. .

2. Next, carefully pull the neck cables through the hole in the plastic housing.

3. After removing the plastic housing, you end up with the neck cables dangling from the base yet still connected to the flat panel display. Do NOT remove or adjust the neck screws (shown below). These screws affect the tension in the neck assembly.

Procedure

Note: The neck assembly is attached to the computer base and to the flat panel.

To remove the neck cables from the computer base, follow the take apart procedures through the Faraday cage.

To remove the neck assembly from the flat panel, follow the procedures through the removal of the flat panel’s back cover.

Procedure1. Remove eight self-tapping screws connecting the back cover to the display.

2. It is not necessary to remove the two screws shown below; these attach to the wireless antenna. Note: The wireless antenna screws are not self-tapping.

3. Raise the display bezel to access cables.

4. Disconnect the inverter cable shown below.

5. Raise the display even more to access the remaining cables and conectors. First, peel the copper tape (1) upward, then disconnect the video connector (2). Next, disconnect the circled items; the inverter cable, the microphone, and the power on LED.

6. Lift the flat panel off the back cover. You are left with the service part shown below.

connecting to the wireless antenna.

2. Lift or remove the display to access the antenna.

4. Remove the two nuts connecting the wirless antenna to the panel shield.

Procedure1. Remove the three screws on the metal cable retainer. Lift the cable retainer off the

panel shield.

3. Gently pull the cables through the hole in the panel shield.

4. Line up the notches on the panel shield hole with the video cable. Gently pull the video cable through the panel shield (See next graphic for a close up of the cable going through the hole). Lift the shield off the back cover.

Note:

There are two RAM expansion slots. This describes installing a memory module in the user-accessible slot requiring PC100 144-pin SO-DIMMs (Small-Outline Dual Inline Memory Module) up to 256 MB in capacity.

The inner slot (located on the reverse side of the main logic board) uses PC133 168-pin DIMMs up to 512 MB in capacity, requires removal of the main logic board and can only be installed or replaced by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Procedure

Opening the Computer

Warning: Always shut down your computer before opening it to avoid damaging its internal components or causing injury. After you shut down the computer, the internal components can be hot. Let the computer cool down before continuing.

1. Shut down the computer and wait five minutes before continuing.

2. Unplug all cables from the computer except the power cord.

3. On a soft cloth, lay the computer down with the door facing up.

4. Loosen the four captive screws at the base of the computer and gently remove the access panel.

5. Touch a metal surface inside the computer.

6. Unplug the power cord.

Important:

To avoid electrostatic discharge, always ground yourself by touching metal before you touch any parts or install any components inside the computer. To avoid static electricity building back up in your body, do not walk around the room until you have completed the installation and closed the computer.

Installing the Memory Module

Note:

If you are replacing a defective memory module, rather than adding a module, remove the defective module before proceeding.

1. Insert the memory module into the memory slot.

2. Press down gently on the module until you hear it click into place under the wo locking tabs on the sides of the slot.

Closing the Computer

1. Replace the access panel and the four screws.

2. Reconnect all cables and restart the computer.

Warning: Never turn on the computer unless all of its internal and external parts are in place and it is closed. Operating the computer when it is open or missing parts can damage your computer or cause injury.

5. Remove the bottom housing. Disconnect any cable to access the memory slot.

7. Remove the existing memory by pushing the tabs down. The memory will pop up and out of the slot.

8. Install the larger capacity memory module into the slot.

9. Apply the thermal paste, see replacement note and instructions below.

Replacement Note:

Whenever the bottom housing is opened, you must clean and reapply thermal paste to two surfaces joining the thermal interface layer. Failure to apply this paste could cause the computer to overheat and possibly damage the internal components. Refer to “Thermal Paste Application” in this section for detailed information.
