News from the Amisk School for October 2019

September was a very busy month and very produc ve. Children have se led well

into school rou nes and it is fantas c to see how much is happening in each class. The

monthly newsle er and the Seesaw program are great ways to keep families informed

about school events and achievements. So much happens on a daily basis and it is im-

portant that you are involved. It makes school meaningful and important to students when

parents want to be a part of their learning. As a result, children are more successful in

school.

It was great to see the parents, rela ves and community members at the A.P.P.L.E. Center Open House on Tuesday, October 1st. A child’s educa on is well rounded when all groups of individuals can work together towards a common goal; which is the best educa-

on for the students. The staff would like to thank you for your support, encouragement and posi ve comments as we work towards crea ng a wonderful learning environment.

This weekend we will be celebra ng Thanksgiving. We are all thankful for our fami-ly and friends. I encourage everyone to take me to be with them this holiday weekend.

The A.P.P.L.E. Center staff would also like to wish the farmers great harvest weath-er so they can harvest their precious crops that feed the world.

Amisk School Mantra: I Can…You Can…We Can…Succeed!

Kindergarten Wow, September flew by!! The Kindergarten students were very busy in September. They learned about our classroom and school rules. . The Kindergarten students have been learning some of our uppercase letters and sounds. They have already learned 5 sight words, they will be reading soon!! In Social Studies they have learned about being unique. In Health,, they learned Habit #1 Being Proactive. The Kindergarten room had a great turn out for the Open House. October promises to be a full month of adventures and lots of learning. Have a great long weekend and Happy Thanksgiving! Grade One This month in grade 1 we have started learning how to add numbers up to ten. The students have been working hard and have been doing well with adding . In language arts we have learned many new words and continue to ex-pand our vocabulary. We have also started writing sentences and developing our writing skills. In social we have focused on how we have many different cultures make up our community. In science we are still learning all about our colors! Soon we will be looking at how to split light and how white light is actually made up of many different colors. The students continue to work hard and try their best at every task. I hope everyone has a wonderful month! Happy Thanksgiving!

Grade Two This month in grade 2 the students will be diving into numbers to 100. The students will be learning how to represent, compare, skip count and recognize numbers to 100. In social the students are busy studying maps including drawing some maps of their own. We will soon start exploring what makes Canada unique by taking a close look at the community Meteghan, Nova Scotia. Exploring liquids is still our area of focus in science. We are looking carefully at the properties of liquids compared to water as well as materials that absorb and repel liquids. The students continue to be busy working at improving their reading ability through practice with long vowel sounds and sight words. In writing we are focusing on developing our ideas and putting them into com-plete sentences.

Grade Three

We are well into our second month of school and we have been making many great memories in Grade 3! In math students have just finished up their pattern unit and are starting to learn all about representing numbers in different ways. In science we have been busy learning all about rocks and minerals and students have enjoyed sharing their learning in this unit on Seesaw. In social studies we have been discussing global citizenship and the things that impact our quality of life in Canada in comparison to other parts of the world. In writing we have been focusing on writing paragraphs and the importance of a topic and closing sentence. We are excited to soon start our first novel study at the end of the month. I hope everyone takes time this weekend to be with family and friends. Happy Thanksgiving!

The students have developed passing, receiving and kicking skills in soccer. They are busy demonstra ng their skills in their soccer matches. They have learned the role of a goalie, offense and defense posi ons. The students are par cipa ng in Archery. Archery is a fun way to further develop their hand and eye coordina-

on skills.

Professional Development

On October 10th, 2019 all of the Buffalo Trail Staff will gather at the Wainwright High School to recognize the contribu ons and achievements of the many members of the BTPS team. Celebra on day is a chance to con-gratulate the service provided to students by all of the staff in our division. Congratula ons to Mrs. Sherry Paulson as she will be receiving her 15 year award! Her amazing work with students does not go unrecog-nized.

Students Gr 1-3 go to the school library every Tuesday afternoon. The Ac-celerated Reader program is active for all students and they are encour-aged to write the quizzes to gain points. There will be monthly assem-blies at the reading prize cupboard for students that have achieved cer-tain prize points. Let's get reading!

OCTOBER: SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK OCTOBER 21-25, 2019: Please take an opportunity to thank your bus drivers for the wonderful job your bus drivers do in transporting your children safely to and from school every day of the school year. With it being school bus safety week, please take the time to remind you children of the school bus rules and please DO NOT PASS A SCHOOL BUS WHEN ITS RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING. The Provincial Red Flashing Light Awareness Campaign logo is Reds Flashing...No Passing! If you witness a driving committing this violation, please report their license plate number to the RCMP. Thanks for your help in keeping our stu-dents safe.

Amisk School Library Commons News Regular reading makes a big impact on all levels of learning. Gr 1-3 students will be bringing books home that are mostly at their reading level or of interest. Lots of these books will have quizzes available and students will complete the quizzes on chrome books during school time. There is always a need for support in the grade 1 & 2 rooms for this program. Call the school if you can volunteer. The MHP team provides in depth, longer-term intervention including those with one or more mental health diagnoses, specialist/ multi-agency involvement, or a variety of other clinical and/or complex situations. Administrative supervision and coordination is provided by Crystal Tower, Director of Inclusive Learning, and the clinical supervision provided by Christy Hunt, R. Psych. Report cards and Parent Portal Information 2019-2020 Dear Parents,

The Amisk School has switched to electronic marks reporting program for Grades 1-3. This program will be used for Electronic re-porting of student marks in the 2019-2020 school year. Kindergarten report cards will continue to use the paper copy format and three reporting periods—December, March and June. Teachers have placed comments for assignments completed in the reporting program and we ask that you please sign into parent portal to view these comments.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Will there still be printed copies of report cards for each reporting period? No, there will not be printed copies of

report cards sent home for each reporting period for Grades 1-3.

2. When are the reporting periods for Kindergarten? There are 3 reporting periods; December, March and June.

3. Will there still be Student-led Conferences (Parent-Teacher Interviews)? Yes, Amisk School and BTPS believe that parent-teacher communication is vital in our quest to maximize student learning. There will be interviews scheduled in the fall and spring.

4. How do I get the information I need to set up a BTPS Parent Portal account? Contact your child’s school to verify your e-mail address in our software program and let them know the child/children you are needing to set up an account for. The school will then request the Student Information Services De-partment to email the information to you.

5. Do I need a different account for each child? No, you will be able to create one account, choosing your own username and password. Once you are logged in, you will be able to access all the children that you linked to the account.

6. Can parents each have their own account? Yes, as long as the accounts are not created with the same email address.

7. Can students access the portal? Yes, they log in to the same portal, but they use their BTPS network login. They do not need to request information to create an account and they only see their data, not data of siblings.

8. Is the BTPS Parent Portal only available as web pages? No, there is also a mobile app called Pow-erSchool Mobile which is available for download in the App Store or on Google Play. Our district code for the app is GFST.

9. What information can I see in the BTPS Parent Portal? You will be able to see attendance, marks, com-ments, teacher email addresses, BTPS Transportation fees and BTPS tuition fees (not individual school fees), student demographic information, public messages on the School Bulletin and general school infor-mation.

10. Why is BTPS moving to electronic reporting of marks? There are a number of reasons:

· * 24/7 access to mark and comment information will promote student-parent-teacher teamwork based on current assessment data.

· * Mark and comment data will be accurate, timely and informative.

· * Teachers will be commenting on individual assignments to give guidance for upcoming assign-ments: effective and timely feedback is a critical component of success.

· * Alberta Education and post-secondary institutions are moving to electronic reporting and we want to help prepare parents and students.
