PRESIDENT’S REPORTFirstly a big thank you to councillors who gave their time and energy working before, during and after our National show. Without their dedication the show just would not happen. Also to some other members and friends who volunteered during the show to help, but more would have been handy, especially setting up and cleaning up afterwards.

I have spent a little time recently looking through back magazines; the changes in the contents and style of articles and production was astounding. One thing that really surprised me was the numbers of members who contributed articles and letters, especially following shows, when several members made a point of writing to thank the organisers, and councillors for their efforts. Maybe it’s worth remembering that volunteers are fast becoming a rare breed and some positive comments instead of criticism would be appreciated.

With the reduction in council numbers - remit passed at last years AGM: it is most important that we do have a full council of nine, as we still have the same amount of jobs that twelve people did. With good organisation and council working as a team, it should be fine but please remember if you put your name forward, that it’s not just a meeting every couple of months: everyone has responsibility for at least one aspect of running ApHANZ .

This brings me to a problem that we have had for several years in not getting a quorum at our AGM. Our constitution says we must have fifteen members present to pass any remits, which has not been achieved (last year we had fourteen) or we must re-convene same place and time one week later. This is just about impossible to achieve, so council are taking professional advice to see how we can legally alter the criteria to something more user friendly. However this year please, everyone, make an effort to come to the AGM.

There will be several remits presented that could affect the running our association. There will also be some subjects for discussion which it would be good for members to be present to actually put their views forward.

Reducing the magazine to four per annum has meant that our AGM date is a couple of weeks later than last year owing to the number of days required to formally notify you all of the date in writing, so please mark the date in you diaries now!

Wrap up well, winter is coming. CAROLE

Annual General MeetingTo be held at the

Citizens Club Rotorua1146 Rangiuru St, Rotorua

August 12th at 12.00 noonFinal date for submitting remits and Council nominations: June 24

Further details and agenda will be sent later.

Points & trophies portfolio reportAfter a bit of a mission, all the points are now up to date!

This season’s highpoints have been calculated, so please consider supporting your association and coming to the annual general meeting and prize giving this year.

Also completely up to date now are the registers of merit (ROM), superior (ROS) and excellence (ROE). A list of these winners will be published and this seasons recipients will be published after the AGM prize giving, where they will be presented with their certificates. For those members unaware of this, the registers are a record of the show, year and lifetime points of horses and riders who have achieved certain milestones in their careers. For example, the register of merit certificate is presented to those horses who have attained 25 points in Halter events and/or General Performance having included a win in a class of 6 or more horses, or awarded at 35 points if the horse has never won a class of over 6 horses. Single events e.g. Dressage or Trail, have individual registers of merit with same points as General Performance. The register of superior is awarded at 60 points and the register of excellence at 100 points. These are huge goals and the certificates are much valued. A detailed explanation is included in your breed handbook.

With the AGM coming up it is time to check and if you haven’t already done so, have your trophies engraved professionally. Home engraving is no longer permitted. I would appreciate all trophies returned to me, or to any ApHANZ councillor, a minimum of 2 weeks before the AGM date. If you are presented with a trophy

at the AGM/Prize Giving, please ensure you sign the trophies register before you leave.

You will also see very soon the re-launch of the log books. New log books have been printed. Did you know you can gain points just for riding your appaloosa? Record your time spent in the saddle into the blue saddle logbook and receive a rider certificate! Those of you who show in English events, Dressage, Show Hunter, Show Jumping etc, will want to make sure you record all your events in the red English points book. English performance events are part of the highpoints and lifetime certificates. There are points and certificates available for hunters, endurance racing, competitive trail riding and trekking, all of which are for the lifetime of the individual horse.

As always, if you have any queries, of any kind, relating to the points or trophies, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to help you.

Secretary’s ReportThe 40th Appaloosa National is now behind us and what a success it was. It was run in conjunction with the Paint Association again and this proved to be very worthwhile financially and number wise.

We had a lovely 40th Anniversary dinner on the Saturday night with a number of our life members present and it was great to see members from way back coming to catch up with each other at the show as well.

April was the month for stallion owners to file their breeding certificates. There are some out there still to be filed otherwise the foaling season is going to be a bit grim for the breed.

The AGM is to be held in August and remits are needed in the office. I have seen members viewing

their frustrations on Facebook – all it needs is a remit

and you to attend the AGM to get these changes put

in place. Please remember we are not mind readers

and are here for the breed and to work alongside

the members and if you have something that needs

discussing or correcting we have council meetings

every two months and that also is what AGM’s are

for. Or why not become a Councillor and help those

that are on board already.

`The comment below was part of a notice to

members of a school rugby club and fits in very well.

“BEFORE YOU COMPLAIN, HAVE YOU VOLUNTEERED YET?”

Sheila

WHY NOT BE A COUNCILLOR?What do you need?

• A wish to promote and help Appaloosas.

• Ability to be tactful and helpful to members.

• A willingness to work as a team.

• Able to attend Council meetings approximately 4-5 times per annum. We try to meet in a central place to keep travel to a minimum.

• Some time to give to a portfolio.

• Give some time to help at the National Show.

What will you get out of it?

• New friends.

• A few laughs.

• A great learning experience.

• A few headaches.

• A sense of satisfaction in a job well done.

• Some new ideas.

Please think about it and allow your name to be put forward.

14 APPALOOSA NEWS www.appaloosaassn.co.nz

News From Sunspot StudThe last four months have been the most exciting, disastrous, busiest, frustrating and devastating time I think I have ever had.

Starting with foaling and having a foal still born; organising the 40th National Show; haymaking, in mainly erratic weather; deciding to enter two horses in the show: I had forgotten how much work was involved.

Sadly, losing Flash Fox after owning him for over 35 years, then not long before the show the devastating floods, with half my property under water, and having wonderful friends and neighbours helping rescue the horses, including mares and foals, then the shock of seeing the paddocks after the water drained away covered with rubbish, broken buckets, plastic bottles, milk crates, trees, mud, broken posts, gates, fences and wire all tangled up and scattered everywhere: the power of water is unbelievable.

Two months later we are still less than halfway towards getting paddocks fenced and useable again.

I have not yet counted the costs: some was covered by insurance but not the fences. I lost lots of electric fence wire standards, tape and reels, probably swept out to sea.

Fortunately, except for some cuts, most of the horses were unhurt, however all the cuts were infected owing to their standing for hours in dirty water.

One foal had a very badly damaged leg with wire wrapped round it and had to be boxed for about six

weeks with constant bandaging; fortunately it seems now to be healing well.

Lastly I had to make the decision to put Sundays Sensation to sleep: he was 31 and he started to go downhill after the floods; his immune system did not cope well with the upsets and standing in water: he may have got chilled. Quite a few of the horses seemed not one hundred percent for a couple of weeks, but soon bounced back, but Sunny didn’t.

There were some good things: Waps Datson and Waps Capri did very well at the show, with Datson Supreme Champion, English Horse Ridden Champion Gelding and Champion Hack.

Also Waps Hurican & Champaign, a yearling, now owned by Patricia Hayden Payne did very well on English day and was Champion Mare.

Hamlin also bred by Sunspot, won the Paced and mannered class and Reserve Champion Hack.

It’s a long time since we have shown at the National Show. Success has made me think I might just do it again!

Best of all, at long last, I’ve managed to get a fencer who has started to re-fence my paddocks.

CAROLE DAVIS

News From Clearview StudA big thank you from Tania and myself to all the people

who supported Clearview Stud at the 40th Appaloosa

Nationals.

A huge congratulations to Caroline McKnight and her

beautiful young colt CV Version of Dreams who won

Supreme Halter Exhibit and also the Yearling Halter

Futurity. What an achievement for a youngster. Takes a

good one to win Supreme as a yearling.

A big congratulations to Bronwyn Preston and

Midsummers Nite Dream and Julie Rush with CV This

Kids Hot for your many successes at the Nationals and

through the year.

We took two youngsters to the Nationals – CV Cee

Me Rule who won Champion Mare and the 2 Year Old

Halter Futurity and many other wins and placings and

Cee Ima Sweet Dreamer winning Champion Jnr Filly and

many other wins and placings.

Thank you so much Vikki Madgwick for showing Em

and Tania for showing Cheeky – you did us proud.

The Ultimate Dream won Get of Sire for the 12th time represented by CV Version of Dreams and Midsummers Nite Dream. And Cee Ima Hot Version won the Stallion Showcase represented by CV Cee Me Rule, Cee Ima Sweet Dreamer, Cee I’m Too Hot to Zip and CV This Kids Hot.

We have had a mixture of weather – two cyclones within a week of each other – rain, rain and more rain and then the wind… Now more rain and a cold blast due. Got to feel for the horses outside in it.

We have recently imported two youngsters from Australia – a paint filly by One Kool Kisser and a QH filly by Smoochin. I have been asked why not an Appaloosa. Unfortunately it is time for some else to do that - my legacy to the breed is the lovely coloured yearling palamino colt that has just won

Supreme at the Nationals. His breeding is just fabulous – The Ultimate Dream x Winderadeen Sweet Version. He will do well for the breed.

News From Ardenholm StudBrrrr it’s definitely turned to winter here in Taumarunui.

We have had a wonderful year here at the Stud, starting with the safe arrival of 2 QH foals and a gorgeous, personality filled Appaloosa colt by Cee Ima Hot Version (QH) and out of our great mare Just A Zip of Sugar. Cee I’m Zippin’ Sugar aka Cody is a full brother to our lovely two year old Cee I’m too Hot to Zip and they have the same calm trainable temperament with personality plus but completely different looking—one of the joys of Appaloosas!! Gelding has taken place for the two colts and weaning is just about to start. Just a Zip of Sugar is safely in foal again to Cee Ima Hot Version, perhaps a filly this next time? Fingers crossed.

We did some showing this season with Cee I’m Too Hot To Zip and our yearling colt CV Version of Dreams, both showing well and culminating in being awarded Supreme Halter Horse for CV Version of Dreams at the recent 40th National Show. Gobsmacked but very, very thrilled! We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our deepest gratitude to Sheila and Tania Dandy of Clearview Stud, both for breeding this

fabulous colt, by The Ultimate Dream (a former winner of the Supreme title himself) and out ofWinderadeen Sweet Version by Good Version, and for having faith in entrusting him and his future to us. With his superior bloodlines and looks to match we see a fabulous breeding and showing career ahead of this special boy.

Currently we are working on lots of infrastructure; covered yards, a mares Veterinary Crush, and better Breeding facilities for our mares and visiting mares. Very soon we are excited to be welcoming home our new QH Stallion, Seek The Riches, also from Sheila Dandy and Clearview Stud, who will stand alongside CV Version of Dreams. With weaning to happen shortly for the babies, and working on selling some lovely horses, it’s never boring around here!

We welcome visitors and look forward to seeing you all out and about next season. Stay safe and warm this winter!

CAROLINE & ANDREW

National Show ReportWell, we were so lucky: three beautiful , warm, sunny days, fantastic grounds, great facilities for our 40th National show.

Friday was our ‘English’ day. Well filled classes made for a very colourful start. Our judge, Peter Hall, was very complimentary at the high standard of turnout.

Once again we could have done with some more help. I’m sure that some competitors think that someone waves a magic wand and ‘hey presto’ a show jumping course appears and a dressage arena is measured and put in place, etc.

A big thank you to those people who did come forward to help the hard working committee.

The Friday evening meal catered by the Paint Horse Association was very welcome.

Saturday started with the all important Breed Halter classes, this time judged by our Australian judge, Helen Bentley. A very impressive line up of champions for Supreme finally taken by Ardenholmes Stud’s ‘CV Version of Dreams’ owned by Caroline McKnight and bred by Clearview Stud.

Time to saddle up and get on with the performance classes while Council, ably helped by several other

members and friends, got on with the food preparation for our anniversary dinner: wow, what a lovely spread.

We were also treated to Margaret Perry telling us something about the history of our association and how it all began, followed by prize giving, and then a fantastic auction of assorted, donated goods, that raised over $600, which went towards the running costs of the show. Sunday dawned once again with clear skies and the show got under way, to finish finally around 3.30pm.

A short prize giving took place and then the dreaded clean up.

The few people who stayed to help were much appreciated. I know everyone wants to get on the road but sadly we have to spend time leaving the club rooms etc as we found them, which was clean and tidy.

To everybody who came to show or just to watch, thank you for making the effort; to those who stayed at home, you missed a lovely show.

Plaudit flash foxSadly, at the grand old age of 37 years, Plaudit Flash Fox left us for greener pastures just after Christmas. Of the many horses I have owned none of them has come as close to being ‘a member of our family’ as Flash did for the last 36 years. Maybe a lovable rogue would be the best way to describe his lovable mischievous nature; I am sure he was frequently laughing at our efforts to get the better of him.

In early 1982 Jacqui and I decided to look for a new colt to stand at stud with Sunspot Supreme; there were several colts advertised for sale. Accompanied by my husband, Ron, we set out to look. We saw some nice colts but none of them had quite that eye-catching appeal that we were looking for until we visited Kris Wiffen in Danevirk, where she had a nice 2yr old, Comanchero, for us to look at, but he was still not quite what we wanted.

Then I happened to turn and see in a nearby paddock a black and white youngster staring at us. “Who is that”, I asked Kris. “That’s Flash”, she replied, “but I am not selling him”, she added. “Can we see him?” was my next question. “Sure”, said Kris and went to fetch him. Well he danced around her round yard and we fell in love. Needless to say, although he was more money than we had, nothing else we had seen came close to his obvious personality, and after some negotiation we left the next day the proud new owners. Two months later Kris brought him up to the National Show in Claudlands, Hamilton. After a successful show we took him home.

He then proceeded to show us what he could do. His first trick was that he would lead and stand perfectly until he got bored, then suddenly, and completely without warning he was gone. It was incredibly quick. One second he was standing by you, the next he was the other side of the paddock giving an interesting display of athletics that he was obviously proud of. He never did it in a yard, only in a big open space.

We thought it wise to start breaking him in as a rising 2yr old. Just as well he was the only horse I had EVER broken in who could remove the breaking in gear, bridle, circingle, crupper, side reins etc without breaking anything or undoing any buckles; we never discovered how he did it! You could watch him walking round looking very innocent. Turn your back to do something else and bingo he would

be standing without the gear on! We also never succeeded in keeping a halter on in the paddock; it was always gone within about twenty minutes. As he always got a sunburnt nose in the summer and as we could not keep a cover on, he was boxed during the day when it was sunny, and turned out at night.

Jacqui who rode him soon discovered how athletic he was: he loved reining and show jumping. John Cottle several times tried to purchase him but his foals were beginning to show promise so he was not for sale.

He never had much patience to stand by the float and dug many a crater when he got bored.

He was a fabulous stallion, siring many talented foals, many of them black and white like himself. They all seemed to have a talent for Show Jumping, and competed in Eventing, Show Hunter, Show Jumping and Hunting with considerable success. Later I discovered by accident that his dam was a six bar champion in Australia.

He was one of the straightest moving horses I have ever owned and rarely if ever needed his feet trimmed - he managed somehow to do it himself; his hooves always looked tidy as if they had just been done. I can only remember him being just a little lame once; we thought he was developing a stone bruise but it just got better.

He was nice with his mares: ‘chocolates and roses’ were part of his ritual. Also he would only cover a mare that was just right and ready to ovulate: If he said no, then the mare was not ready, and I learned to trust his judgment, and he was never wrong.

Although he was sometimes naughty he did not have a nasty bone in his body; put a young rider on him and he would go as if he were an old plodder!

“RIP my friend, I miss you heaps.”
