Appalachian Hardwood Sustainable & LegalHIGH POINT, NC - The Appalachian Hardwood re-

source is growing at a rate of 2.45 for every tree that isharvested or dying combined, according to the U.S. De-partment of Agriculture.

The growth is the result of modern forest manage-ment and wise utilization. Buyers of Appalachian Hard-wood logs and lumber can be assured of this becauseof Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc.

An analysis of USDA data finds the growth to re-movals ratio in the Appalachian forest has increasedfive percent in the past five years.

“This assures hardwood lumber consumers thatwhen they purchase products from the Appalachian re-gion, they know the resource is sustainable,” said TomInman, AHMI President. “The forest landowners havedone exceptional work in managing their forests for wild-life, water resources, recreation and timber.”

AHMI intro-duced the Appala-chian HardwoodVerified Sustain-able in 2007 tocertify its membersas producing, dis-tributing andm a n u f a c t u r i n ggoods from the re-gion. The cam-paign educates

wood consumers about the hardwood lumber resource.Lumber certification is a complex issue that has mul-tiple stakeholders from the individual landowner throughthe retailer of finished goods. AHMI has researched anddeveloped programs to assist its members in makingdecisions that benefit both the environment and indi-vidual operations.

The research is based on the U.S. Forest Service’sForest Inventory Analysis which is compiled in each stateby the U.S. Department of Agriculture. AHMI requestedspecific data from the 344 counties of the AppalachianRegion from northern Georgia through western NewYork.

AHMI also found:• Forested land in the 344-county region has in-

creased 300,000 acres to 65.7 million acres• More than 33 billion live trees are in the region,

an increase from 32.7 billion• The top species are Soft Maple, Red Oak, White

Oak, Hard Maple and Yellow PoplarAccording to the U.S. Forest Service bulletin SRS-

142, considerable attention has been given to the Ap-palachian Region in the Eastern United States because

of its scenic beauty, rich biodiversity, and abundance ofnatural resources. Of particular importance are the hard-wood forests that dominate the Appalachian landscape.

The association also launched the AppalachianHardwood Verified Legal program in 2013 to helpmembers explain to customers the legality of products.This initiative requires participating companies to fol-low a set of guidelines and verify that they:

1) Operate a legal business entity;2) Follow accepted industry practices and all local,

state and federal laws applicable to forest managementand timber harvesting including all applicable environ-mental regulations.

3) Pay all compensation, taxes and fees due to tim-ber owners or the owner’s designated representative

and government entities as required by local, stateand federal laws.

Certificates areavailable frommember compa-nies that explainthe program andconfirm participa-tion.

AHMI is a re-gional trade asso-ciation headquar-tered in HighPoint, NC. Its mis-sion is to promotethe hardwood timber and products from the AppalachianRegion of the eastern United States. The association’sbylaws dictate the producing region and these countiesmust meet elevation, soil composition and climate re-quirements to be included.

The following guide is a listing of the 200 plus com-panies who are members of the association. This in-cludes sawmills, concentration yards, wholesalers, for-esters, secondary manufacturers and suppliers.
