The ISM must be mounted to the wall prior to mounting the Inverter. The ISM is designed such that the high current (DC) wiring is done first, followed by the mounting of the Inverter and the AC wiring. It also provides an easy means of removing the inverter for service without disconnecting the majority of the wiring. Be sure to allow at least 40” of vertical space for mounting the system (see figure: 1). Installing the ISM: Mount the ISM on the wall using the upper keyholes and lower mounting holes. It is best to mount the unit on a sheet of ¾” plywood securely mounted to the studwork, or “sleeper” studs securely mounted in the appropriate location to the studwork. Please Note: The cover is removed by removing five (5) Philips head screws. There is no need to remove the screws (star drive) securing the 250A circuit breaker.
It is advisable to allow a couple of inches above and below for wiring access. It is also recommended that the bottom of the ISM be mounted 3 – 4 feet from the floor. The ISM is 11” wide. Multiple units stack tightly together, as shown below, 2 ISMs and a T80 require 30.5 linear inches of wall space (refer to Parallel wiring section).

Mounting the TSW Inverter: The ISM is designed with two bus bars which align with the Positive and Negative battery terminals on the TSW inverter. Remove the covers, nuts and washers from the terminals, and carefully lift the inverter in place above the ISM and insert the terminal studs into to corresponding holes in the bus bars. While supporting the TSW, screw the TSW to the wall through at least four of the mounting holes (you may have to pre-drill first). Note: The ISM is not designed to support the weight of the TSW for an extended period of time. It is only meant to support the inverter while attaching it to the wall. Once the inverter is secured, attached the washers and nuts provided and tighten to a torque of 5 ft-lbs. Refer to the illustration on the next page for a clearer view of the inverter connection. Note: For additional information on installing the inverter, please refer to the TSW Series User Manual.

This view shows the Inverter mounted above the ISM with the Positive and Negative input connectors aligned with the positive and negative bus bars. Positive and Negative Bus Bars The Charge Controller, if included, may be mounted next (refer to the photo on the next page). It is recommended that the 4/0 AWG battery cables be connected next since they are difficult route with other wiring in place. The recommended wiring order is heaviest to lightest gauge. If a charge controller is installed, wire the DC output (4 AWG) and PV input (6 AWG) circuit breakers. The AC connections to the inverter (8 AWG) are next.
The final connections are to the load panel and PV array.

Mounting the TurboCharger: The Apollo TurboCharger T80 is designed to mount on the right side of the ISM. There are ¾” and 1 ¼” knock outs that coincide with those on the left side of the TurboCharger. Knock these out, and using the provided mounting bracket (replace the hanger), attach the TurboCharger to the ISM by connecting the mounting bracket to the top with #10 screws and using ¾” and 1 ¼” conduit connectors (nipples). Screw the TurboCharger to the wall using two screws in the corresponding holes in the wiring compartment of the Turbocharger.
Note: For additional information on installing the TurboCharger, please refer to the appropriate TurboCharger Installation and Operation Manual. If a charge controller is not installed (Inverter only application), skip the DC wiring section and proceed to the grounding section.

Photo of connections between ISM and Charge Controller DC wiring: (Refer to the wiring diagrams for specific ISM models beginning on page 15). It is recommended that the DC wiring be done first since this is generally the heavier wiring. Wire the 4/0 battery cables to the 3/8” screw terminal on the 250A circuit breaker (positive) and shunt (negative). Route the provided 3AWG cables through the 1 ¼” conduit connector and connect to the battery (output) terminals of the TurboCharger; Positive from the 100A circuit breaker and Negative from the battery negative bus (top side of shunt). Route the 6 conductor shunt cable through the ¾” conduit connector and plug into the Apollo Shunt connector on the TurboCharger. Connect the 6AWG green ground wire from the ground bus to the ground lug on the inverter (below and to the right of the negative battery connector on the inverter.) Note: All wire should be copper rated at 90°C (Type THHN is recommended). Note: Tighten connections to the following torque specification: 4/0 battery cables: 144-180in-lbs (16.3-20.3 Nm); TurboCharger terminal lugs: 50in-lbs (5.6Nm); 100A circuit breaker: 20in-lbs (2.3Nm); battery negative or ground bus: 45in-lbs (5.1Nm)
 WARNING
Note to qualified service personnel: The 250A DC circuit breaker should not be removed (it is mounted with Star head (Torx type) screws for this reason. Should it become necessary to replace this breaker, assure that the battery cable is disconnected at the battery bank first.

Neutral to ground bond: A 6AWG green ground bond wire is connected from the AC neutral bus bar to the ground bus bar. This is required on all AC systems in North America. This connection must be made at the power source. If the ISM is installed in a stand-alone system (off-grid), the ISM is the power source, and the bond is required to pass inspection. If, however, this application is a UPS or battery backup in a grid tie system, this bond occurs in the main distribution panel, and therefore must be removed from the ISM. The following section offers a full explanation of grounding requirements.
Grounding:
System Grounding
System grounding is often the most misunderstood
wiring concept. The subject is more easily discussed
if it is divided into three separate subjects. The
grounding requirements vary widely by locale and
application. Consult local codes and the NEC
(ANSI/NFPA 70) for specific requirements.
Equipment or Chassis Grounds
This is the simplest part of grounding. This involves connecting the metallic chassis of the
various enclosures to have them at the same voltage level. This reduces the potential for
electric shock. It also provides a path for fault currents to flow resulting in blown fuses or
tripped circuit breakers. The size of the connecting conductors should be coordinated with
the size of the over current devices involved. Under some circumstances the conduit and
enclosures themselves will provide the current paths.
Ground Electrodes / Ground Rods
There are two purposes of the grounding electrode, also known as a ground rod. The first
is to "bleed" off any electrical charge that may accumulate in the electrical system. The
second is to provide a path for 'induced electromagnetic energy' or lightning to be
dissipated. The size of the conductor to the grounding electrode or grounding system is
usually based on the size of the largest conductor in the system. Most systems use a 5/8'
(16mm) copper plated rod 6 feet (2meters) long driven in to the earth as a grounding
electrode. It is also common to use copper wire placed in the concrete foundation of the
building as a grounding system. While either method may be acceptable, the local code
will prevail. Connection to the ground electrode should be done with special clamps
located above ground where they can be periodically inspected.
Well casings and water pipes may be used as grounding electrodes. Under no
circumstance should a gas pipe or line be used. Consult local codes and the NEC
(ANSI/NFPA 70) for more information.
Bonding the Grounding System to the Neutral and Negative Conductors
This is the most confusing part of grounding. The purpose is to connect one of the current
carrying conductors, usually the AC neutral and DC negative, to the grounding system.

This connection is why we call one of the wires "neutral" in North American electrical
systems. You can touch this wire and the grounding system and not receive a shock.
When the other ungrounded conductor, the hot or positive, touches the grounding system,
current will flow through it to the point of connection to the grounded conductor and back to
the source. This will cause the over current protection to shop the flow of current,
protecting the system. The point of connection between the grounding system and the
current carrying conductor is often called a "bond." It is usually located in the over current
protection devices' enclosure. Although the point of connection can be done at the inverter,
codes do not generally allow it since the inverter is considered a "serviceable” item which
may be removed from the system. In residential systems the point of connection is located
at the service entrance panel.
In some countries the neutral is not bonded to the grounding system. This means you may
not know when a fault has occurred since the over current device will not trip unless a
"double" fault occurs. This type of system is used in some marine electrical codes.
Bonding must be done at only one point in an electrical system. Our systems inherently
have two separate electric systems- a DC system and an AC system. This means that two
bonding points will occur in all inverter applications. The bonding point will also be
connected to the chassis ground conductors. It is common to have two separate
conductors connect the ground electrode and the two bonding points. Each conductor
should use a separate clamp.

AC Wiring: The ISM is supplied with 2 pole 40A continuous circuit breakers for the generator/line input, and AC input/output bypass switch. The ISM includes several lengths of 8AWG type THHN wire to connect from the inverter to the AC circuit breakers. It is recommended that this type wire be used for all AC interconnects. As shown in the ISM wiring diagram, connect the 8AWG wires from the inverter input and output input and output breakers making certain that L1 and L2 are connected to the same side of the corresponding breaker. Route the wires from the terminal block in the inverter wiring box through the channel under the inverter and into the ISM. Bus bars are provided for easy hookup from a generator or the utility and also for an AC sub-panel. The AC input and output bus bars allow for parallel connection and are available to connect optional lightning or surge arrestors provided by the installer.
Routing of AC wires to Inverter Note: All wire should be Copper rated at 90°C (Type THHN is recommended). Note: Tighten connections to the following torque specification: Circuit breaker terminals: 20in-lbs (2.3Nm); Bypass terminal block: 16in-lbs (1.8Nm); Neutral or ground bus: 40in-lbs (4.5Nm)

Routing of Shunt cable The cabling that connects to the Apollo shunt board are considered low voltage wiring and must be separated from high voltage wiring. The 6 wire modular cable which connects from the shunt board to the T80 must be routed along the top right of the enclosure base to the ¾” knock out which passes to the T80. Tie downs for wire ties have been provided for this purpose. Similarly, the battery voltage sense wires and battery temperature sensor cable must be routed along the battery negative cable.

WIRING OF AC BREAKERS: The drawing below shows the most popular breaker configuration for North America (as included in model ISM120/240). The circuit breakers are dual AC breakers for split phase 120/240 applications.
The 3 dual breakers include 4 bus bars (terminal strips) and the bypass toggle. Starting from the left side is the AC Input to the Inverter/Charger which may be provided AC from the 240VAC grid (aka Line) or from a 240VAC generator. The right most breaker pair controls the AC Output from the inverter to the AC system load. The center pair of breakers is called the Bypass since its function is to allow the inverter to be bypassed from the circuit for maintenance. The bypass toggle allows only one of the breaker pairs to be on at one time. In normal
operation, the Input breakers are on, so the Bypass breakers are off thus preventing the flow of current from the AC Output to the AC Input.
The wiring diagram on the left shows the most popular AC inverter wiring for the ISM 120/240. The wiring at the top of the diagram is supplied with the ISM. The wiring at the bottom are wires which will be provided by the installer and come from the outside. The base ISM is supplied with the label below affixed to the bezel below the AC breakers:

The photo on the right shows the AC and DC circuit breakers installed on the ISM DIN rail. The unit has the Generator Selector breaker installed and has the GFP and the DC breakers on the left side for a T80. ADDITION OF A GENERATOR INPUT: It is common that off-grid installations will have a generator to charge the batteries when renewable sources are not available or sufficient. The ISM is designed to provide the circuit breakers for a generator input and to allow the user to switch between using the generator or the grid as the source of AC. IMPORTANT: If the inverter is taken out of service, the AC input wires must be disconnected at the circuit breakers. If you have questions regarding the removal of the inverter, please call Apollo Solar Technical Support at 203-790-6400.

ADDING DC BREAKERS: The block diagram below shows the connections for a typical Negative Ground PV charging system. Note that the PV Input breaker is the first in the series of breakers which provides the ability to disconnect the PV power to the balance of the system. The Ground Fault Protection device is required in the US by NEC and must not be used as a means for disconnection the system since doing so will disconnect the negative from the earth ground. Please Note: It does not matter in what order the PV Disconnect/Overcurrent breaker and GFP breaker are wired (per NEC).

Shown below is the DC Breaker pac which may be purchased to easily add the T80 to the Apollo Solar ISM. The breakers have been specially built, tested and certified to UL standards for this application. The pacs also include the mounting bracket and conduit fittings and wiring for easy connection of the Charge Controllers to the ISM and Inverter system.
The T80 Breaker Pac includes breakers rated for 150volts DC since the T80 can take up to 140 volts Open Circuit. This is true for the GFP as well. The output breaker is made up of 2 50 Amp breakers in parallel to provide the 100 Amp rating required to meet the 125% rule for the 80 Amp output of the T80.

The photo of the ISM at the left shows the addition of the bezel over the circuit breakers. The bezel protects the contacts from fingers and provides the mounting surface for the toggles used for the Inverter Bypass and the Generator Selector breakers. It is also a convenient location to label the breakers.

This illustrates the wiring required for two inverters wired in parallel. The AC terminals allow for the parallel connection in one of the ISMs. Please note that the proper wire gauge (per NEC) must be used to handle the current leaving the ISM (6AWG for 60A total). Please Note: Due to NEC restrictions, the ISM is rated for a maximum of two inverters in parallel. If more than two are required, separate battery cable runs are required, and the AC must be combined at the service panel. Also, to support the increased current load, the sensing shunt must be located externally at the single point negative junction of the battery bank. Please contact Apollo Solar Technical Support for further information.
Wiring Diagrams On the following pages are wiring diagrams for the various ISM model configurations as described in Table 1. It is recommended that the installer remove the corresponding sheet from this manual and tape it to the inside cover of the installed ISM for future reference.
