Why introduce this technology?

Luttrellstown CC is a college that looks to the future and we believe this initiative to integrate iPADs into our teaching and learning environment will enhance student learning opportunities.

The use of technology is a core skill in every career. This technology will encourage creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking in our students as we prepare them to live and work in a modern society.

Some initial adviceFocus on content appsThe most common mistake teachers make with iPads isfocusing on subject-specific apps.In doing so, many overlook the full range of excellent featuresthe iPad already has to enrich teaching and learning.

Try using only four general apps: an annotation app, ascreen-casting app, an audio creation app, and a videocreation app.

The content teachers use can from a wide range of materialsavailable from the Internet and already in their teachingresources, not from apps.

Page 16: ‘Our iPad journey’...Agenda 11:30 –12:00 • Fáilte-FionnualaNíChaisil( Príomhoide) • Fáilte-Maria McAlinden ( Príomhoide Tánaisteach) • Fáilte-Beryl Furlong (‘Wriggle’

Some initial advice

Teacher confidence in use of iPadsDon't assume that teacher use of iOS in a personal environment, will translate to expertise in a work environment. The challenges of iPad workflow include understanding cloud computing environments and options, how different apps and types of files interact with each other, file format compatibility and file conversion tools. This takes time, patience and staff co-operationTeachers need practice on how to incorporate the devices into the learning , e.g. sharing materials, collecting student work, making comments and grading, passing student work back etc...

Some initial advice

iPads are not like LaptopsAt LCC we should focus on what iPads do best to enrich active learning. iPads enable students connect with learning in a far more kinaesthetic way – using fingers to zoom, rotate in, pinch close, or swipe across – as well as increasingly interactive and immersive apps, to facilitate hands-on learning.

iPad mobility means that students can take pictures, record audio, and shoot video, in any number of places ( see AUP)

Page 18: ‘Our iPad journey’...Agenda 11:30 –12:00 • Fáilte-FionnualaNíChaisil( Príomhoide) • Fáilte-Maria McAlinden ( Príomhoide Tánaisteach) • Fáilte-Beryl Furlong (‘Wriggle’

Some initial advice

Failing to communicate ‘why the iPad’Many schools fail to communicate to their partners why they’ve purchasediPads. As a result, many initiatives face resistance from teachers, parents andeven students who don’t understand why these devices are being introducedinto their classrooms. Letting the purchase speak for itself isn’t enough.

LCC will continue to communicate to all partners that the iPad supportsessential skill areas - complex communication, new media literacy, creativity, andself-directed learning.

LCC will endeavour to point out improvements in teacher management ofclassroomtime and space afforded by iPads, as well as the flexibility it provides to varylearning activities at a moment’s notice and that students have the world at theirfingertips.

Our iPad initiative will only succeed if 1. We as a staff embrace this technology to assist with our teaching and learning and are eager to direct and encourage our students 2. To help and share ideas with each other –Be patient with yourself and others if things do not initially work out. If in doubt, ASK.
