Welcome to Burwell and our 2nd annual joint production sale with Arrowsmith

Red Angus. It is certainly our pleasure to serve your geneti

c needs. Special thanks to

our past customers for their loyalty and support. We are thankful for the oppo

to meet new prospective buyers and look forward to serving all of you fo

r many years

to come with this joint venture.

A major emphasis of our program is complete customer satisfaction. You can buy

with confidence. If you have an issue with a bull you buy from us, call us and we will

work with you on how best to resolve the problem. We stand behind our cattle.

We only sell two year old bulls so that they have plenty of time to develop naturally.

This fall and early winter they were out foraging in the stalks until the first of January.

At that time, we brought them home to begin the process of preparing for the sale.

Clipping, semen and reproductive evaluation , video shooting and t

aking still pictures,

have since been done. They were put in a large yard with a steep hill to climb for

exercise and fed a ration consisting of ground corn st

alks, corn silage, ground alfalfa,

cracked corn and a protein supplement. They have not been pushed.

Their condition

has been bred in, not fed in.

Many of the bulls in the sale are calving ease and can

be safely used on heif-

ers. There are a number of grandsons of B571, sons of 5L Legend 425V, sons of SA

Picture Perfect, as well as sons of clean up bulls and AI sires. We are also offering five

Sim Angus hybrid bulls.

Two other points of major emphasis in our program are disposition of the cattle

and focusing on the female. We have our own young kids working with us in handling

the cattle, as well as two old grandpas that don’t move very fast. We do not tolerate

any animal that we cannot trust or handle easily. If a problem arises, the animal is

gone. Focusing on the female is a high priority for u

s. The cows are the factory. We

carefully evaluate the mother of any bull we are considering purchasing for in herd use.

Her feet and overall structure must be as near perfect as w

e can find. Her udder and

teats must be functional. And, of course, she must have a good disposition.

wEndorse was the $40,000 top selling bull in the Triple S Sale in Canada. Being Canadian bred, his American EPD tabulation is not as true as his actual perfor-mance. He consistently sires eye appealing cattle that come on a moderate frame size. His yearling ultrasound scanned an 18.7 square inch ribeye. Now deceased, there will be limited opportunites to access these unique genetics.

Welcome to the ARO/ C3 “We’re Doing it Different.... Part II” joint production sale.

The simple statement, We’re doing it different,

is a guiding principle behind my registered program, and has been since

I purchased my

first registered female in 1994. The focus from day 1 has always been efficient, trouble-free, productive cows....it’s never been ab

out an EPD

profile. The focus has never been about being a “Bull-of the month-club” member, it’s been about id

entifying great cow families.....and stacking

them. Sitting in Jeanne’s office yesterday putting the final touches on thi

s catalog, I had a warm fuzzy seeing how many sale bulls went back to

one cow. Sodak Em 5127 Reg. # 488023 -0.9 BW 31 WW 33 YW and a whopping 98.6 MPPA. Hands down, this little no numbered

1995 model black/ red gene cow is the most prominent female in my cow herd. Why would anyone build a c

owherd around such a below breed

average cow?

Pretty simple answer.... every one of her daughters produced,

as have every one of their daughters. For those who like to play on the

extended

pedigree function on the Red Angus website, I invite you to

do a little digging behind the bulls and se

e the maternal lineage expanded, and

hopefully you will have a greater perspective of the maternal focus of this p

rogram, that is not necessarily translated through

EPDs.

The sale offering this year is another testam

ent to the focus and direction of my program. Due to the environmental conditions of 2012-

2013, I was forced to switch calving pastures and summer grass, which meant that the commercial cows got to enjoy being I

n pastures where

they could be seen all summer, and the purebred c

ows got their chance to crawl up and down hills that they have

never seen before....Weaning

weights are down 50-75 pounds as are yearling weights, as compared to normal, but from my perspective knowing what the cows were coming

off of, what they went through last spring, the late start to gr

ass last year, and the daily altitude change

they enjoyed, I’m quite pleased with

this years set of calves!

The bulls were fed the same this year as always. They are slowly worked up on a growing ration starting at 42 megs and never receivin

g

higher than 48. Again, the focus isn’t an end weight, the focus is a b

ull that is developed for longevity and soun

dness, and that will never

change. Again as a feature lot,

I am offering choice of my replacement heifers. If you are looking for a leather

halter recipient or a future donor

cow, there will be a heifer in there that fits the bill. If

you want to do some digging on paper before you come look, just give me a holler and

I will send you the full list of the 45 heifers that made first round cuts.

This may sound a bit stupid, but this “lot” is the one I am most ex-cited about. The true reflection of any program, whether purebred or commercial, is the replacement heifers. This is a collection of 175 pretty damn good Red Angus replacement heifers.At catalog time, the break down is 60 head from Jim and Scott Boettcher and 40 head from Neal and Mary Ammon. These folks are some of my oldest, dearest friends and customers. Between Jim and Scott, there have been over 50 bulls relocate from Carns to south of Stuart through the years. Neal has alot more input in my program than he gets credit for, because without him, I wouldn’t AI half of what I do and he tests a number of my sires via his own AI program. So either through multiple pasture sires or extensive AI use, I get real world feedback from two outstanding commercial programs. We’ve sold feeder calves together here in Burwell for years, and I’m just as proud of their heifer pens as they are.And now, for the largest reflection of my own breeding program, comes my own commercial herd. Yes I have used a bull or two from my own program thru the years, like to the tune of 125 plus of them over the last 20 years. If anybody has a handle on what the cow fami-lies have done and are doing, I think I have a pretty good idea. Due to a little change in management and resources, I’m offering for the first time ever my entire commercial replacement crop. The feeder heifers have been taken off the top, the late born grass heifers off the bottom, the only heifer calves at home are the 45 purebred re-placements. First and foremost, A SINCERE THANk-YOu for your interest in both our programs and attending or participating in “ We’re Do-ing It Different... Part II” True to form, we do it different.... from birthing, to summer grass and on to winter development....and coming 2’s have a vastly dif-ferent nutritional requirement than a 10 1/2 - 12 month old bull calf. These calves aren’t developed as many yearling bulls are, and they are 2 months younger than most yearling bulls offered for sale. With that said, if you are set up to accommodate the needs of younger bulls and want to do so in your own environ-ment, the same $100/bull haul your own credit is offered. If you don’t wish to drag a trailer to Burwell, I’m more than happy to take the bulls back home and finish their development until the grass starts greening up and you are ready for them.This accomplishes 3 very important things.1. The calf gets to go back to a 50 acre sandhill pasture and fin-ish his individual development process in an environment that provides ample exercise to harden the calf up for the upcoming breeding season.2. These are young calves,and they will all be semen tested prior to the sale March 3. NOT EVERY CALF TO SELL WILL HAVE PASSED A SEMEN TEST. They will have passed an evaluation. What this means, Dr. Chris Finney from the Ainsworth Veterinary Clinic will semen test the bulls, and any bull he deems to be developmen-tally deficient will not make the trip to Burwell.... or more accu-rately stated, each calf will have to be at 60% motility. There will be a few calves that still exhibit coiled tails, but given a few days of sunshine and the smell of spring in the air, they will quickly achieve 70% or better. This re-evaluation process is done entirely at my risk and expense, and every bull is guaranteed to pass prior to delivery. All bulls will receive a breeding shot, will be poured, and if requested, a foot-rot vaccine shot prior to delivery.3. I’ve always been of the firm belief that if you could take the time to come buy a bull, I can take the time to deliver the bull and come look at your cows and calves. I WANT to see what your sires are doing and it gives me the opportunity to “ see what you see”. And from a breeder standpoint, it’s a lot easier to recom-mend genetics when I can see with my own eyes what your goals and needs are.If you have any questions or concerns or a “ unique - situation” , please feel free to discuss them with me before or after the sale.... be happy to do what I can to accommodate your needs.
