BACKGROUND

The agriculture system in India has

undergone rapid transformations over

the past few decades particularly after

the economic reforms of the 1990s’. The

emergence of integrated agriculture

and food supply value chains are one of

the most visible market phenomena in

India.

The agri supply chains in India and their

management are now evolving to

respond to the new marketing realities

thrown by the wave of globalization

and other internal changes like the rise

in the level of disposable income of

consumers, change in the food basket

of the consumers towards high value

products like fruits, vegetables and

animal protein. The new challenges of

the agricultural economy of the country

has now spurred the government

agencies to go in for different legal

reforms for enabling and inviting

private investment in agricultural

marketing infrastructure segment and

for removing different entry barriers to

promote coordinated supply chain,

ensuring better traceability.

Considering the above scenario, experts

from the sector have advised Bombay

Chamber to consider deliberating on

the agriculture value chain topic.

Ÿ To create a robust agriculture value chain with inclusive growth of all actors including producers

Ÿ To suggest ways for increasing investments in the agriculture value chain

Ÿ To provide a single window for Product Display, Knowledge Sharing & Networking with all stake holders including Farmers, FPOs', SMEs’, Corporate Companies, Banks & Financial Institutions and Policy makers-Central & State Govt.

Ÿ To come up with a “Declaration Paper”, enlisting recommendations for creating a robust agriculture value chain.

Ÿ It could be leveraged as a good platform for networking and B2B opportunities.

Ÿ Opportunities for companies to benchmark their best practices.

Ÿ Opportunities for knowledge partnership for technology transfer.

Ÿ Ensuring the participants with best possible knowledge inputs related to agriculture value chain.

Ÿ Corporate CEOs’

Ÿ Senior Officials of the Central and State Government and other organizations including Financial Institutions

Ÿ NGOs’

Ÿ Farmer Produce Organization (FPOs’)

Ÿ Small & Marginal Enterprises (SMEs’)

Ÿ Agriculture Value Chain Service Providers

Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industry

The Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry was established on 22nd September 1836, under the

auspices of Sir Rober Great, Governor of Bombay. The establishment of the Chamber was mainly the

work of John Skinner, its founder and first Chairman. Bombay Chamber has an illustrious history of 181

years, and has, as its constituents, member companies that include most reputed large and medium,

professionally managed, corporate manufacturing and commercial companies, financial institutions,

multinationals, public sector companies, auditors, architects and chartered accountants who together

contribute a significant portion of India’s trillion dollar economy.

The Chamber has played a significant role in supporting the develo0pment of industries in Mumbai over

the last several decades. The Chamber serves as an effective vehicle of communication between the

regulatory bodies, the corporate and the society. It collaborates with other Industry associations and

thus increases its reach to the decision makers beyond boundaries of Mumbai. It also supports a large

base of Micro Small and Medium enterprise members and contributes effectively towards overall

development of its member companies by addressing core issues and remaining responsive to the needs

of business.

The Chamber provides services to its members through dissemination of information, publications,

special studies and through activities like organising business delegations, seminars and training

programmes. The Chamber also provides labor advisory services for its members. Other services

include Visa facilitation services to its members and issue of non-preferential certificates of origin.

Over the past few years the Bombay Chamber has moved somewhat from the traditional role of

advocacy with Government and facilitating trade and industry to play a larger role of “Corporate as a

Citizen”. Bombay Chamber is also concentrating on promoting good Governance and ethical conduct in

business and public life towards the greater good of Society encompassing promotion of skills training,

art and culture, in addition to ensuring equitable and balanced industrial growth in a sustainable

manner.
