ST. ELIZABETH CATHOLIC CHURCH IGLESIA CATÓLICA DE SANTA ELIZABETH
A Message from Archbishop José H. Gomez
I would like to share with you two announcements made by the Holy See this week of great importance to our Arch-
diocese. First, Pope Francis has accepted the retirement of Bishop Gerald Wilkerson, Auxiliary Bishop for the San Fer-
nando Pastoral Region, upon reaching the retirement age for bishops, which is 75 years old.
Bishop Wilkerson has been serving the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as a priest for 50 years, and as a bishop since
1998. He has fulfilled his ministry with zeal and dedication, and we are very grateful for the many things he has done for
the people of God in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. We are also grateful because we know that even in his retirement,
his health and energy will allow him to continue his ministry among us.
The Holy Father has also named Msgr. Joseph V. Brennan and Msgr. David O’Connell from our Archdiocese along with
Father Robert Barron from the Archdiocese of Chicago as auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. It is
with great joy that we welcome the announcement of our three new auxiliary bishops. I believe each of them will help us
in our mission here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles — the beautiful mission we have of sharing the love of God and the
message of Jesus Christ and promoting human dignity and mercy and justice in our society.
The Archdiocese has created a special webpage with information on the announcement of our new auxiliary bishops,
including the video of the presentation of the bishops-elect, their statements and special articles from The Tidings. I
invite you to visit this page at http://archla.org/20150721.
Please join me in praying for them.

GOVERNING OUR PASSIONS Whoever governs their passions is master of
the world. We must either command them, or be commanded by them.
It is better to be the hammer than the anvil. —St. Dominic

History of The Knights of Peter Claver and the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary The Knights of Peter Claver, Inc.
The Knights of Peter Claver and the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary The Knights of Peter Claver, Inc. is named after St. Peter Claver, a Jesuit priest from Spain who ministered to African slaves in Cartagena, Colombia, South America, in the 17th century. Peter Claver is said to have converted over 300,000 slaves to Catholicism. In 1922, a La-dies Auxiliary was formed to provide the same opportunities for Catholic Action to African
American lay women. The Auxiliary was officially recognized as a division of the Order in 1926. The Knights of Peter Claver, Inc. organization is the largest and oldest-continually extant predominantly African-American lay Catholic organization. The Knights of Peter Claver, Council 389 and The Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Court 389 were chartered and established in Altadena, California at Sacred Heart Parish in March 21, 2009. The organization is composed of three Parishes. The Parishes are Sacred Heart in Altadena, St. Elizabeth of Hun-gary in Altadena and St. Andrew's in Pasadena. The Council 389 and Court 389 chose their official name by honoring and using the name of Bishop Carl Anthony Fisher. Since the organization has so many courts and councils number 389 is used to distin-guish to tell which court and council the parishes are part of. The organization is the largest and oldest predominantly African-American lay Catholic organization. Council 389 and Court 389 are part of the Western States District in the Altadena and Pasa-dena, California area. The purpose of organization is to serve the Roman Catholic Church and the community. Note: The Ladies Auxiliary of The Knights of Peter Claver Bishop Carl Anthony Fisher Court #389 will be in attendance at the 10:15 a.m. Mass on Sunday, August 9, 2015 and will be available to answer any questions about the organization after the Mass.

Serra went on to establish eight other missions, including two in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, before he died 1784 at the age of 70 after traveling roughly 20,000 miles. A total of 21 missions were establis-hed between 1769 and 1823. 7. Junípero Serra was as concerned with the Native Americans' physical well-being, as with their spiritual life. He introduced domestic animals and new agricultural methods and trades at his missions. He gave out food, clothing, and shelter in exchange for labor. Serra loved art and music, and he introduced Spanish versions of both to the natives, too. The Native Americans had their own or-chestras at Missions San Antonio and San Jose. 8.
