Quartermaster’s 2-Cents-Worth

Veterans’ Weekly Cup-Of-Coffee In Rothschild

Jim Sachs

A couple of months into the Plover VFW

Post 10262 Quartermaster position and

duties, I discovered there is a lot to this job

that I was not aware of, such as writing this

column.

I ran across an interesting item on the VFW

website called “The National Defense” talk

radio show. It is VFW's premiere talk radio

show and is the only nationally syndicated

talk radio show that focuses exclusively on

topics concerning today's active-duty

military, veterans and those who support

them.

The show is not available on any local radio

stations, so go to: http://thenationaldefense.com

The main webpage will give you the topic of

the week. Then click on “Weekly Segments” in

the menu at the top to see a long list of topics

from the current and previous weeks and listen

to a show by clicking the small arrow (>)

beside the title. You can also connect to their

Facebook and Twitter pages from the main web

page or read and listen to host Jerry Newberry’s

personal stories by clicking “On Location.”

Happy Listening!

Jim Cline - Quartermaster

Fifteen veterans from Wausau and surrounding areas, seven of whom are VFW members (plus one

Plover VFW Auxiliary member), gathered at Denny's family-style diner in Rothschild on August 19th

for the "Veterans’ Weekly Cup-Of-Coffee." This informal, social meet-up gives veterans a chance to

come and enjoy each other's company and conversation over a cup of coffee or breakfast.

"We have no agendas," said VFW Mar-Lin Post 10203 Commander Don Kozlowski. "Whoever can

make it on any given Wednesday just shows up. This is a very casual gathering. We talk about

anything we want and we have a good time."

The meet-up began in 2012 with four or five veterans attending and the list of attendees has since

grown to more than 40. “We welcome veterans of any age from any era,” stated VFW Burns Post

member Gary Moll.

“I just started coming three or four weeks ago at the urging of a friend who couldn’t make it today,”

said Air Force Veteran Conrad Schepp, “and I plan to keep on coming. I really do enjoy it.”

On this particular morning, veterans chatted on

topics that ranged the gamut from pets to sports

to the virtues of owning and driving an old, rusty

truck. . .

"We are also working with local nursing homes

to provide transportation once or twice a month

for their resident veterans and those who may be

in wheelchairs so they can attend," said

Kozlowski.

The "Veterans’ Weekly Cup-Of-Coffee" meets at Denny's in Rothschild every Wednesday at 10:00 AM.

Attendees receive a 20% discount off their total bill. (Editor Debbie Manthey HIGHLY recommends

taking a colorful fall ride up to Denny’s for more fun and camaraderie than you can even stand!).

VFW member Herb Westlund stood up to tell a 'story' to the

Veterans’ Cup-of-Coffee gathering that was very well-received!

Mary Kimmel - President

Diane Lutovsky

Commander Stoflet is proposing an “Exploratory Property Committee” to look into the future needs and

requirements of our Post building and facilities; and to develop a plan from any recommendations that

the committee would have to the Post members. Considerations include:

1. Projections of current and future membership needs for building use.

2. Needs and assessments of current building and parking.

3. What requirements and impacts would remodeling involve? And what updates are needed?

4. Future needs for the kitchen and restrooms?

5. Storage needs?

6. Is additional/reworked space needed? What could be done to meet the current needs and to allow

for possible future expansion if needed?

If you feel you can help with or provide input, please consider joining the committee to address these

issues. Contact Commander Stoflet at (715) 213-2625 or [email protected]

PP and VOD Reminder

Plover VFW Post and Rifle Squad member

Tom Bredow had the esteemed privilege of

serving as an assistant driver and escort of the

hearse, a 1951 vintage military M37 truck,

that carried Wisconsin Medal of Honor

recipient and Korean War Veteran Einar

Ingman to his final resting place in Tomahawk

on Wednesday, September 16th.

Tom is a member of the “Living History”

military reenactment association, along with

Doug Anderson, who served as driver of the

M37 hearse for Ingman.

Einar Ingman was recognized for his heroism

in 1951 by President Harry S. Truman, who

awarded him the Medal of Honor for his

actions in the Korean War. He passed away at

the age of 85 on September 9, 2015.

“The funeral ceremony and procession were

unbelievable,” said Tom. “People were lined

up and kids from schools were lined up as far

as the eye could see. Flags few on yards and

were placed in the ground along the entire

route. A major general and top-ranking

military officers were in attendance. Military

helicopters flew over during the folding of the

flag in a missing man formation. It was an

incredibly prestigious honor for me to serve at

this event and be a part of it all.”

during the Korean War carried the casket of Einar Ingman.

If you or someone you know has a mobility need, “Mobility 4 Vets Wheelchair Shop” in Waupaca, WI

can help! Their inventory comprises a variety of scooters, wheelchairs, walkers and other assistive

devices that they will provide for Veterans, their families, or any others in need of such services.

The shop volunteers, all Veterans themselves, perform quality repairs and services and depend upon

donations of equipment and money to put these units back into good working order for those in need.

Equipment they can use includes motorized and manual wheelchairs, motorized scooters, lift chairs,

walkers, crutches, canes and any other type of mobility equipment. They also collect and distribute

devices such as commodes, lifts and tailgate accessories. They can always use additional volunteer help,

even if it is only one or two days per month.

For more information, you can visit the shop at 270 Grand Seasons Drive in Waupaca on Mondays and

Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., call (715) 281-6175, or email: [email protected].

Notes and News

Fall is always an exciting time for me. The Post and Rifle Squad have about finished the annual

summer “labor intensive” events that included our August Steak Dinner and the Mike Helgert Golf

Tournament. Good weather helped make this year’s events very successful and for this, we are thankful.

We also participated in the DAR Flag Retirement Ceremony on Flag Day, the Elk’s Flag Day

Ceremony, the Stevens Point 4th of July parade and we led the Celebrate Plover Children’s Parade.

The exciting time I’m referring to is that football is back and the television “re-runs” are about finished

for their summer run. New programs are starting and so are our “Tim & Mary Colegrove/VFW Fish Fry

Fridays” and our Rifle Squad Steak & Omelet breakfasts. We finished up last season on a very high note

and hope to continue this year. We decided to keep the cost of breakfast plate options the same as last

year, although the recent chicken disease has caused a spike in the price of eggs of $1.00 a dozen. Hope

that it recovers soon.

We are looking forward to the arrival of cooler weather, the fall colors and Thanksgiving. Is it too early

to put out the pumpkins and Halloween decorations? I like what goes along with Halloween season. . .

Halloween treats!

Veterans Day is the next community event that the Rifle Squad will support. We expect to work with

the local schools and visit some of the residential facilities that provide Veterans Day events for their

residents. One event that always seems to attract

challenging weather is the December “Wreaths Across

America.” The Rifle Squad will be called upon by the

Civil Air Patrol for support.

I am looking forward to our Post’s new sound system

and hope we can soon provide some breakfast music

for our breakfast guests!

We wish you all a Happy Fall and Thanksgiving!
