COMPLIMENTARY COPY Published Weekly By Joel Sater Publications www.antiquesandauctionnews.net VOL. 43, NO. 11 FRIDAY MARCH 16, 2012 by John Wesley Thomas t’s March 17th and someone in the world is cele- brating St. Patrick’s Day. Not just someone, but probably over 80 million people worldwide who claim some Irish ancestry, are in a celebratory mood for this important cultural and religious holiday. In the United States close to 21 percent or 41 million of the white population are of Irish ethnicity, while 10 million or 25 percent claim total “Irishness.” But on St. Patrick’s Day since everyone claims to be Irish, it is one of our nation’s largest cel- ebratory observances. Ireland, made up of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, today has a combined population of 6.4 million, which is 25 per- cent lower than it was at its peak, in the mid-1800s. Nonetheless, in a country where 74 percent of the Irish consider themselves Catholic, St. Patrick’s Day is first celebrated as a day of piety, and then as a robust event of which there are over 121 parades in which to participate. Between 1845 and 1852 a nat- ural disaster befell Ireland unlike any registered before that time. During those episodic years the Great Famine (An Gorta Mor), known outside Ireland as the Great Potato Famine, occurred when eight straight years of the country’s foremost edible crop failed due to the Blight, an extremely destructive potato fun- gus. And this Blight was potent! Within days after the potatoes were dug up from the ground, they began to turn into a blackish, slimy, odorous decaying mass of “rottenness.” As the majority of the Irish peasants were strictly tenant farmers, the crops and live- stock that they raised were the property of the British landowners. For their labors each tenant farmer was “given” a plot of land similar to an acre in which to raise food for his family. That single acre, devoted to potatoes, could support a family of five or more for one year. With the occasional addition of butter or milk, the pota- to, while bland, had enough nutri- ents to be considered a whole meal. Unfortunately the potato was the only form of sustenance for more than one- half of the Irish population. And when this important crop failed in suc- cessive years, Ireland was on the verge of whole- sale star- vation. In the prime potato- growing belt in cen- tral Ireland, whole counties were dec- imated of population, either from death due to the causes of starvation and other famine- related diseases and/or emi- gration to other English- speaking countries. From a peak population of 8.5 million in 1845, this lit- tle island nation over the next five years suffered a loss of over 25 percent of its population while another 2.4 million lost their land and had to enter one of the many abysmal workhouses set up by the British. In economic terms this was devas- tating, as 4.7 million Irish were removed from the workforce. One hundred and sixty years later, Ireland is still recovering from this economic and cultural disaster of population loss compounded by the fratricidal conflicts for Irish sover- eignty in the early 20th century. In the after- math of this chaotic turn of events some two million Irish citizens, who had some means, were able to emi- grate, either singly or as a family unit, to far flung parts of the world such as the United States, Great Britain, Canada, the Americas, and Australia. While the Great Famine was the primary cause of Irish emi- gration, the inability to practice their Roman Catholic religion, the lack of literacy, and the many evic- tions from land due to non-pay- ment of rents all contributed to one of the largest population shifts in history. The direct descendants of this initial wave of emigration are called the Irish Diaspora. And the successive gener- ations after have contributed 80 million Irishmen of various shades. When 80 mil- lion Irishmen worldwide and their “Irish-for-a- day” friends get together to cele- brate their “Irishness,” the hands down choice on the annual calendar is St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick, a Christian mis- sionary, is generally recognized as the Patron Saint of Ireland or the Apostle of Ireland. Patrick, (for- merly named Maewyn Succat) a Romano-Britain, was born about 387 AD to a well-to-do and pious family living on the western coast of England. When he was quite young he was cap- tured by Irish raiders and kept as a slave/shepherd to a Druidical priest in Ireland for six years, until he was able to escape and be reunited with his family. By then when he was in his early twenties he became religious and, due to a vision, he studied in France to become a priest. After his baptism and confir- mation he returned to Ireland as an ordained bishop and spent the rest of his life, through many trials and tribula- tions, converting the Irish to Christianity. While the dates of St. Patrick’s death vary (mid to late 5th century), he is said to be buried at Down Cathedral in Downpatrick, County Down, Ireland. To garnish the luster of St. Patrick’s image, there are two myths that have stood the test of time. They are (1) the spiritual message of the shamrock, and (2) the banishment of snakes from Ireland. In Ireland there grows several varieties of a three- leafed clover called a “shamrock.” While the ancient Irish druidic priests retained a special rever- ence for the shamrock due to its alleged potency against evil spir- its, St. Patrick utilized the three leaves of the green clover as a visu- al image in con- vert- ing the pagan population to Christianity. In this manner St. Patrick suggested that the three leaves symbol- ically represented the Holy Trinity…the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. In the late 18th century when the Irish republican revolutionary groups began to press for democratic reforms, the “wearing of the green” became a symbol of Irish unity as well as cultural identity. One of the most visible forms of this fraternal unity was the wearing of the green Irish shamrock, an endur- ing and emblematic national sym- bol, both then and now. One of the most fanciful myths surround- ing St. Patrick was his driving all serpents from Ireland. In actuality if ever snakes and reptiles were originally indigenous to Ireland they were eliminated during the A Celebration Of St. Patrick’s Day Collectibles (Continued on page 2) I I St. Patrick’s Day pin-back Badges and Ribbons. “Fiesta-Shamrock.” Place setting of four: dinner plate, 8-inch diameter, luncheon plate, 7-inch diameter, bowl 7-inch diame- ter, and mug, 3.5-inch diameter platter, 13.5 inches long, and set of salt and pepper shakers, 2.25 inches deep. and retire back to their homesfor some savory Irishfare, usually consistingof Irish stew and a pota-to dish, washed downwith a cold ale or lagerbeer. For those moreinclined towards Irishmusic, one can find oneof many Irish pubs thatoffer a “ceili,” (tradition-al Irish music and danc-ing) while offering copi-ous amounts of Irishwhiskey, Guinness beeror Irish coffee to main-tain the revelry. Forthose who celebrate theday with an eye to col-lecting, there’s a wealthof items to fill the day -from Irish-themed decora-tions and Ephemera, to Dolls,Toys, food-related col-

lectibles, and more. And… anew book categorizes themall!

Editor’s Note: JohnThomas and his wife,Sandra Lynn Thomas arethe authors of St. Patrick’sDay & Irish Collectibles,An Illustrated History, justreleased by SchifferPublishing (get it by St.Patrick’s Day at onlinebookstores, B&N, or atthe Schiffer website,www.schifferbooks.com.This is the couple’s thirdbook with Schiffer; theyare the authors of

last Ice Age, when 95 percentof Ireland was scoured by ice. However the snake-banish-ment legend has been visuallyportrayed for over one thou-sand years, depicting a stern

St. Patrick in a bishop’s mitreholding a pastoral staff whileordering the serpents fromIreland. Obviously the rid-ding of snakes from Ireland isa metaphorical story purport-ing to show that the serpentssymbolized the various paganfaiths that Patrick drove outof Ireland in order forChristianity to flourish.

The celebra-tion of St.Patrick’s Day inAmerica has a long and sto-ried history stemming from1737, where records showthat the Charitable IrishSociety of Bostonhosted this initialc o m m e m o r a t i v eevent. Twenty-fiveyears later, in 1762,it was New YorkCity’s turn to honorSt. Patrick. By1850, due to theIrish Diaspora fromwhich a massiveamount of Irishimmigrants came toAmerica, numerousIrish benevolentsocieties were band-ing together on St.Patrick’s Day to notonly honor the saint, but also to demonstrate theirrights to hold parades as fullAmerican citizens. In NewYork City through majorwars, civic disturbances, andbad weather, the famous andiconic St. Patrick’s Dayparade has been held continu-ously since 1792. In 2011 the

New York Parade celebratedits 250th anniversary, attend-ed by two million spectatorswith 150,000 marching par-ticipants. Similarly largescale parades are also held inmajor cities of the UnitedStates such as Chicago,Boston, Philadelphia andSavannah, where many of theoriginal Irish Diaspora started

I think probably the hard-est thing for the general publicto understand about collectingantiques is the whole issue ofcondition and its relationshipto pricing and rarity. Someyears ago, the AntiquesRoadshow on PBS featured anexceptional Baltimore Albumquilt of the early 19th centurythat was valued at a substantialsix-figure number. In theweeks that followed, Ireceived (as did, I am sure, many other dealers and collec-tors) an abundance of callsfrom people who had “identi-cal” quilts to the one shown onTV, which they were ready tosell so they could then retire toFlorida.

The circumstance withevery one of those calls wasthat what they saw on televi-sion was not the same thingthat they owned. First andforemost, the majority of thecallers did not haveBaltimore album quilts butrather much later patchworkquilts from the late Victorianperiod. Second, in everycase, the quilts that wereshown to me were in horriblecondition. “Oh, but they areover 100 years old and this tobe expected.” Okay, yes, most of the quilts were atleast 90 years old, if notolder. However, that does notmake them valuable nor doesit excuse their ratty condition.

When it comes to antiques, the most important aspect ofcondition that folks usuallymiss is rarity and collectordesirability. If a piece is inpoor condition but both veryrare and highly desirable tomany collectors, then prob-lems can be minimized. BUT,if that same piece is in poorshape and the form is relative-ly common and not particular-ly collected, then frankly, itsvalue is minimal. “But it’s

old!” Yes, but age is notalways a determinate of valuewhen it comes to antiuqes.Look at the crazy prices beingpaid for 20th-century books,in comparison to early 19th-century examples. The latterare much older but not nearlyas desirable to collectors as thelatter. Thus a tattered Biblefrom 1820 or even 1720 isworth only a fraction of what anice first edition of The GreatGatsby would bring. There area million Bibles out there butonly a limited number of firsteditions of Gatsby.

Condition is a tough areato judge, particularly by anowner who is often deludedinto believing that a little bit ofdamage is okay. Yes, but to abuyer, that little bit of damagemay in fact appear to cause thepiece to be fatally ruined.Look to online listings as agood example of this.Recently, I saw a book listedthere as being in “great origi-nal condition,” with missing

covers, tattered pages, andfoxing. Hardly! But the sellerbelieved the book was so oldand the topic was so importantthat these flaws transcendedthe fact that it was a wreck.

The flip side of the condi-tion issue is one that isespoused by a friend of mine.He won’t even consider anantique (and his interest is invery early items) unless it is inmint condition. He goes home99 out of 100 times disap-pointed at things he sees. While I am sure he has somegems in his collection, I dothink that he has forgotten thatwe are collecting second handstuff. With things that havepassed through many hands, that is the visible evidence ofuse, and in many respectsproof that something is gen-uine. Waiting for the brandnew looking, old item is aninvitation to be stung by afake.

Morphy Auctions, March17 auction of antique slot,coin-op, gambling andmechanical music machineswill offer collectors theirchoice of more than 415 out-standing lots, includingselect pieces from thepersonal collection ofthe late FrankZygmunt Sr.Additionally, the auctionincludes earlyC o c a - C o l aitems andother typesof antiqueadvertising.

Zygmunt,a Chicago-

area collector who foundedthe antique slot machine andjukebox business known as

Zygmunt & Associates 25years ago, was a prominentfigure in coin-op circles.

“Mr. Zygmunt wasextremely knowledgeable and

well-liked by his peers. Heplayed an important role inkeeping the coin-op and gam-bling hobby strong, and weare honored to be presentingsome of his most prized pri-

vate-collection pieces atauction,” said Morphy

Auctions CEO,Dan Morphy.

The topentry fromt h eZ y g m u n tcollectionis a Caillenickel-fin-ish doubleu p r i g h ts l o t

bines 5-centEclipse and 25-

cent Centaurmodels. A magnifi-

cent production in a tiger oakcase, the machine is in fineworking order. It is known tohave been one Zygmunt’sfavorites and is entered in thesale with an $80,000 to$120,000 estimate.

A visual dazzler from the

Zygmunt collection is theH.C. Evans horse race wheelwith colorful panels depictingjockeys on galloping mounts.W h e nt h ewhee li ss p u n ,

anumber appears in awindow that indi-cates the winning

horse. Complete and all orig-inal, it could reach $4,500 to$5,500 at auction.

Another gambling high-light is an extremely rareMills 50-cent Chicago jack-pot upright slot machine.Designed for the 1900World’s Fair (Paris), themachine is distinguished byits multicolored pierced-tinwheel and coppered adorn-ments, including cabriole legswith bas-relief griffins andowls; and hounds’ heads.

“This particular machineis very special because ittakes 50-cent coins,” said

Morphy. “It was a rich man’samusement. At the turn of thecentury, 50 cents was a lot ofmoney - maybe equivalent to$40 or more today.” In beauti-ful, all-original condition, themachine works well and isestimated at $45,000 to$65,000.

The Mills 5-cent Cricketin the sale is believed to be

the first all-original exampleof its type to appear at auc-tion. Morphy said themachine, which has an inter-changeable bar that desig-nates a $1 jackpot prize, isespecially rare because of its

original, untouched condition. “The Cricket resembles an

early pachinko machine, andhas gorgeous casting,”Morphy said. “I predict manycollectors will be chasing it.We expect the machine to

make $50,000 to $60,000.”Coin-operated penny

arcade lots include a circa-1904 Caille Bros. MickeyFinn Strength Tester, com-plete with original marquee

SHOWS & MARKETSSHOWS & MARKETS

By Kathleen MullellyAfter working for thirty-

seven years at a steel distribu-tion company, BruceStradling and his wife becameempty nesters. Both their chil-

dren left home and once againthey found time to spendtogether. They started shop-ping at antique shops, shows, flea markets and yard sales.

Bruce remembered, as achild, visiting his great auntwho possessed a beautiful

Victorian pickle caster. Thecaster was housed in an ornatecontainer with beautifulworkmanship in metal. Whileshopping with his wife, Brucefound match safes with the

same work-manship, andthat is how hisc o l l e c t i o nstarted. Todate, he hasc o l l e c t e dapproximate-ly thirty dif-ferent andunique matchsafes.

The firstmatch safedates back tothe early1800s. In1 8 2 7 ,EnglishmanJohn Walkerinvented amatch knownas “theLucifer.” Hismatch was

followed, in the 1830’s, by asomewhat improved “strike-anywhere match,” which litwhen rubbed over almosteverything - a stove top, the

seat of yourpants or theedge of a fin-

gernail. Earlymatches werenot very safeas the heat ofyour bodycould ignitethe match and

your clothes! To store theseall too easily lit matches ofthe 19th and early 20th cen-

turies, craftsmen created lid-ded safes and open holdersmade of everything frompainted tin and sterling silverto platinum and gold.

Though he started late inlife as an antiquedealer (only tenyears ago),Bruce, whileshopping formatch safes, realized that hecould find col-lectibles for rea-sonable pricesand resell themfor a profit.Bruce has soldantiques and col-lectibles at theH i s t o r i cB u r l i n g t o nAntique and ArtEmporium inBurlington, NewJersey, for thepast six years. Hesells toys, ele-gant glassware, shaving col-lectibles, beer collectibles, tools, and a little of just abouteverything collectible.

Some of Bruce’s matchsafes are on display duringthe month of March at theBurlington AntiqueEmporium. Items related to

his collection, like tobaccotins, lighters, pipes, and ash-trays (along with anythinggreen, for St. Patrick’s Day)will be offered for sale at rea-sonable prices. Also, on

March 18th, the Emporiumwill host an “EvaluationDay,” during which cus-tomers may bring in objectsfor an evalution by a team ofdealers from the Emporium.

The Historic BurlingtonAntique and Art Emporium, located at 424 High Street,Burlington City, New Jersey,is open 7 days a week from 11

a.m. to 5 p.m., with compli-mentary coffee, tea andsnacks for shoppers. For pho-tos, visit our websitewww.antiquesnj.com; like uson Facebook, or call (609)747-8333 for directions. With65 dealers housed in theEmporium, I’m sure you’llfind items to enhance yourown collections.

for sale, as they work cur-rently on a volume with aPatriotic theme. Keep aneye on the A&AN website,www.antiquesandauction-news.net, or the Schiffer sitefor the release of the patri-otic book title.

Two sweet young girls, one dancing a jig on a chair and the othercarrying a basket overflowing with shamrocks, celebrate the“green.” One card is unsigned, but is probably by EllenClapsaddle. Published by International Art.
