COMPLIMENTARY COPY Published Weekly By Joel Sater Publications www.antiquesandauctionnews.net VOL. 43, NO. 30 FRIDAY JULY 27, 2012 lassic and vintage boating collectors worldwide were treated to an event that will probably never again be replicated. The three day event, May 18 to 20, was the Willmar, Minnesota, sale of Paul Mikkelson’s astounding variety of classic Larson Falls Flyers boats, toy boats and motors, restored and unrestored outboard motors and a huge selection of marine related advertising pieces. “This was easily an historic event,” noted Penn. “We had bidders from 27 countries vying to win some of Paul’s rarest col- lectibles. This collection has been kept in his museum in Willmar, Minnesota, since the time he start- ed collecting. It included many one-of-a-kind items including some of the rarest full size vintage boats which he spent years finding and then restor- ing to pristine condition.” Penn’s auc- tion team moved over 1,600 lots across the block in a well orga- nized and fast paced auction, selling one lot every 50 seconds. The cataloged portion of the auction was docu- mented in a full color 100 page catalog with each lot projected on a huge ten foot screen, as it sold. That same video screen w a s where P a u l Mikkelson intro- duced the auction with a four minute video produced by Penn’s video production crew. Top Lot Of The Sale The top sale of the auc- tion, and not unexpected, was Mikkelson’s 1942 Larson Falls Flyer Inboard (Lot 370). It hammered down at an impressive $52,000. Known as “Flight of Fancy” this deluxe twin cockpit forward inboard is the largest of the Falls Flyers ever built by the Larson Boat Company in Little Falls, Minnesota. Little Falls is just up the road from Willmar and still building boats today. And while much of Mikkelson’s collection focused on Minnesota- built Larson boats, he had an awe- some selec- tion of out- board motors which powered much of the early craft dur- ing the turn of the century. Many of those compa- nies continue today to be the power of choice for much of the boating industry. “These early outboards are absolutely beautiful in their design and execution,” said Penn. “The outboard collector had the chance to not only see some super rare machinery, but bid on some of the rarest known exam- ples of vintage marine power.” An extremely rare Indian Silver Arrow outboard, from 1930 and manufac- tured by the Indian Motorcycle Company for just two years, brought $6,000. Everyone that looked at it was dazzled by its design, its beautiful finned muffler and twist grip throttle, taken from the motorcycle technology of the day. The toy boats also had every- one buzzing. They garnered some of the top bids. A highly stylized Japanese ITO (Lot 828) brought $6,900. (Prices are hammer prices and do not include the 10 percent to 20 percent buyer’s premium.) This rare toy boat brought more than some of Paul’s rare full-sized craft. Another toy boat, a B.J. 3 tether boat (Lot 871), circa 1910 and made of mahogany, brought $6,000. Onsite and online bidders were both aggressive during the entire sale which was held in two separate venues. The extra venue was need- ed to accommodate the huge mix of items Mikkelson collected dur- ing the past 25 years. Friday’s Warehouse Sale The auction began on Friday with a session held in Paul Mikkelson’s spacious 10,000 square foot warehouse. That’s where he stored his acquisitions until he was ready to begin the meticulous process of restoration. The warehouse was carefully prepared to display all sorts of vin- tage boating items by the Rich Penn crew. Friday’s session included full size boats, toys, printed materials, signage and over 200 unrestored outboards. The crowd followed auctioneers Fred VanMetre and Matt Lahr around the perimeter as they offered up lots of boat parts, unre- stored motors, tables full of toys, signage and posters. The crowd eagerly grabbed every opportunity to nab hard to find items, many of which were slated to become part of another Mikkelson restoration. And though these items are what Paul Mikkelson considered not suit- able for his museum col- lection, there was excitement throughout the day. Many bidders stood for the entire 7-hour sale. see and bid on the exception-al number of items.

The first day ended withthe warehouse nearly cleanedout, except for those itemsleft for later pickup. Everyonewas tired, but excited to beginthe second day of theevent…on Saturday at theWillmar Civic Center, just afew short miles away. Therethe crowd would find evenmore astonishing items, manyof them not seen for manyyears and part of the neverending quest Paul Mikkelsonhad for finding the most exot-ic and rare.

Saturday - Bigger AndEven Better!

The second day broughtan even larger audience to theWillmar Civic Center whereover 20,000 square feet wasfilled with beautifullyplanned display areas. Eachone allowed auction goers thechance to see many items

grouped by manufacturer oruse. The displays of restoredoutboard motors wereimpressive, to say the least. Many in the audience foundthemselves lost in the wonderof the exceptional technologyrepresented by a myriad ofmotor manufacturers.

And again the toys tookcenter stage. Many of therarest pieces were sitting rightup front, displayed in front ofthe auctioneer’s stage plat-form. Many audience mem-bers were literally glued totheir seats during the entire 10hour session, moving only toraise a bidder number. It wasevident these were collectorsthat were very serious aboutwhat was being offered andthey didn’t want to miss anyopportunities.

The full size speed boatsrolled in at planned intervalsand the audience always clus-tered closer into the seatingarea as they arrived. Amongthe rarest selling on Saturdaywas “Boondoggle”. This 1939Falls Flyer Inboard isbelieved to be the only singlecockpit inboard ever built bythe Larson Boat Company. Atonly 16 feet in length, theboat looked fast just sitting onits trailer. The hammer finallycame down after much spirit-

ed bidding at$49,000, second onlyto the 1942 FallsFlyer Inboard men-tioned earlier. PaulMikkelson spared noexpense on gettingthese restorations justright and it showed, right up to the gleam-ing trailers carryingthese treasures.

A “woody”Larson CabinOutboard Special, built in 1955, alsodrew considerableattention. Both on-site and phone bid-ders, including one fromTaiwan, pushed the sale to$35,000. The boat was builtspecifically for large bodiesof water and included aretractable anchor, fold awaypicnic table and power fromtwin restored 25 horsepower

Johnson Model RDE motors. It sat on a fully restoredTeeNee trailer. Throughoutthe day, more Larson speedboats made the trip forward. Some of them sporting theearlier canvas covered steam-bent oak frames and othersconstructed completely offiberglass including a 1956craft sporting a special “bub-ble” engine cover. This rareoption was created by LarsonBoats to cover the outboardmotor to quiet the engine.Only two of these craft withthe special bubble are knownto exist and Paul had both ofthem. The chance of seeingthese two extremely rareboats in the same roomtogether will likely never hap-pen again.

Paul had a very specialFalls Flyer vehicle built justfor his personal use and forpulling his boats in parades(Lot 410). It used the FallsFlyer design for a body thatwas placed atop a 1964 VWBeetle chassis. This one-of-a-kind vehicle was a crowdfavorite and it managed$10,000 before biddingended. But Larson BoatCompany was not the onlyvintage manufacturer repre-sented as Paul found itemsrelated to several other boat

builders as well. Chris-Craftwas represented throughoutthe auction and a dealeradvertising sign from KinnMotors in Oconomowoc,Wisconsin, advertising Chris-Craft went for $5,600.Advertising for Larson, GarWood, Alumacraft, Naden,Feather Craft & others werescattered throughout the auc-tion.

Sunday, the final day ofthe three-day event was

famous singers, celebritieswho have attended in thepast include Davy Jones,David Hedison, Patty Duke,Celeste Holm, AnnRutherford, and many oth-ers. This year’s event willhost the famous singer JamesDarren, Sherry Jackson(Make Room for Daddy), JayNorth (Dennis the Menace),Shirley Jones (Oklahoma!),Van Williams (The GreenHornet), Robert Colbert(Maverick) and Ron Ely

The Mid-AtlanticNostalgia Convention(MANC) is a three-dayfestival held at the HuntValley Marriott, Maryland(located outsideBaltimore) and celebratesthe by-gone era whenpenny candy camewrapped in a paper bag,Pepsi Cola was a nickel abottle, and drive-in movietheaters were the rageevery Friday night. Thisyear’s event takes placeAugust 9 to 11.

Art showcases vary insize and some are fancierthan others. Some carryAmerican Indian tradi-tions; others center on rockand roll; and a few exploreGreek and Irish roots. TheMid-Atlantic NostalgiaConvention, however, maybe the only pop cultureconvention in Maryland tofeature Hollywood celebri-ties that mingle with thefans, pose for photographs, and sign autographs all day

long. These celebrities areincredibly accessible, andthis is the novelty oldergenerations have come toexpect every year.

At MANC, attendeescan browse over 150 ven-dor tables filled withcomics, board games, vin-tage toys, DVDs, books, movie posters, postcards, lobby cards, penny arcadecards, photographs andother valuable items. Amovie room screens vin-tage films all day with rareprints originating fromarchival storage houses andpreservation societies.Slide show seminars offerto stimulate and educateattendees on a diverserange of pop culture sub-jects. The sock hop onFriday night has provenpopular year after year. Adrive-in movie theater inthe hotel parking lot, atsunset, adds excitementafter dark. An old-timeradio drama is re-createdon stage, complete withsound effects, microphone, and scripts. Museums inMaryland and Pennsylvaniaput on displays of vintagememorabilia - some sovaluable that glass casesare brought in to protect theposters. A charity auctionheld every year at the eventoffers autographed itemsdonated by celebrities.

“Some people haveasked me if the Mid-Atlantic NostalgiaConvention is a WesternFilm Festival, a flea mar-ket, or a silent cinemascreening,” remarks TerrySalomonson, owner andoperator of Audio Classics

in Howell, Michigan. “It’sactually all of these com-bined. If people cannotafford to fly to the WestCoast to attend the TurnerClassic Movies FilmFestival or the San DiegoComic Con, or if they don’twant to deal with a crowd

of 22,000 plus, the Mid-Atlantic NostalgiaConvention is a wonderfulsolution. I often describethe event as the destinationconvention of the year.”

For spectators it’s a vis-ceral, exhilarating chanceto revisit the past and remi-nisce about an era that peo-ple over the age of 50remember with fondness.

Past events highlightedFran Striker Jr. talkingabout how his father creat-ed The Lone Ranger (soonto be a new Walt Disneymotion-picture); a slideshow presentation aboutBuck Rogers in comics; apresentation on what goesinto determining the valueof comics and pulp maga-zines, and how they arepriced in price guides; thehistory of The Man fromU.N.C.L.E.; how HowdyDoody influenced a genera-tion that grew up in the

fifties; and the ever-popularquestion and answer ses-sions with the celebrities onstage.

“Collecting old comicsand toys can be a businessfor some of us,” remarksMichelle Vinje, one of themany vendors at MANC.“One of the most commonremarks I hear from atten-dees is ‘Gee, I used to haveone of those. I never antici-pated how valuable thatwould have become yearslater.’ Other comments Ihear include, ‘I can’t believeI forgot about that. I remem-ber watching that televisionshow every Wednesdaynight after school!’”

“The Nostalgia Con hasbeen growing every year,”explains Martin Grams, theevents coordinator. “Unlikesome huge comic cons heldat convention centers thatattract tens of thousands offans, all lining up outside inthe streets, we have plentyof aisle space for those inelectric scooters to moveabout freely. If you wantyour autograph from ShirleyJones this year, you won’thave to wait three hours inline. The longest people waitis about 20 minutes. This isbecause we offer a relaxedatmosphere and everyonehas an opportunity to ask thecelebrities questions. Thecelebrities we attract to ourshow don’t do many conven-

tions, even in the Californiaarea, so we offer attendees arare treat. Tony Dow fromLeave it to Beaver surprisedus when he said we were thefirst show he had done in tenyears. Jon Provost (Timmyfrom Lassie) explained thathe never fell down a well, even though it’s a famousline people repeat often.Dawn Wells explained whatit was like to be maroonedfor three years on Gilligan’sIsland. The stories they tellare wonderful.”

A treasure trove of over700 century-old, well-pre-served baseball cards discov-ered in the attic of aDefiance, Ohio house earlierthis year – and that couldhave landed in the trash withother items being tossed out -now is valued at several mil-lion dollars. One expertdescribed the discovery as“…the most significant findof vintage baseball cards everreported….”

The first 37 cards fromthe trove, with names stillfamiliar to today’s baseballfans, such as Ty Cobb, CyYoung and Honus Wagner, are expected to sell for acombined total of more than$500,000 in a public auctionto be conducted in Baltimore,Maryland and online onAugust 2, 2012 by HeritageAuctions (www.HA.com),the world’s largest col-lectibles auctioneer. Othercards from the discovery willbe offered in future auctionsand private sales by Heritage.

“The cards are all from arare series known by collec-tors as E98 that were issuedaround 1910. They wereacquired at the time for pro-motional purposes by CarlHench, a German immigrantwho owned Hench’s MeatMarket & Sausage Works inDefiance, which eventuallybecame Chief Supermarket.

His heirs were cleaningtheir late grandfather’s housewhen they found the cards ina box under an old dollhousein the attic,” said Chris Ivy,Heritage’s Director of SportsAuctions in Dallas, Texas.

When they discoveredthem in the attic, cousinsKarla Hench and KarlKissner didn’t know if the

cards were genuine becausethey are smaller in size thanmodern cards and did nothave players’ statistics print-ed on the backs.

“My cousin, Karla, opened the box and said,‘Karl, what is this?’ We rec-ognized names of players, but we were not used to see-ing small size baseball cards. We put them back in the box,and just like everything elsethat was in the house we con-sidered whether to pitch them

or keep them. Fortunately,we decided to keep them andstarted doing research aboutthe cards,” said Kissner, oneof the 20 heirs who will share

proceeds from salesof the cards byHeritage Auctions.

“Every time wereceived more infor-mation we got moreexcited. At onepoint, I thought,‘Wow! Oh, my! I’mholding a $70,000baseball card. They’d been on myoffice chair and Isaid, ‘Let’s get thesein a vault.’”

“We kept the dis-covery a secret fromthe family for a fewmonths until enoughinformation waslearned about thecards. We called thefamily memberstogether for a meet-ing with HeritageAuctions representa-tives and told thefamily we foundsomething in the atticwith significantvalue. There weregasps and whoopsand hollers when wetold them about thebaseball cards,”Kissner recalled.

The cards havebeen authenticated

and graded by ProfessionalSports Authenticator(www.PSAcard.com) ofSanta Ana, California, theworld’s largest sports memo-rabilia certification company. In 21 years of authenticatingcards, PSA had only certifiedabout 625 of the E98 series, and less than 10 were graded

at a near-mint level. Now thetotal number authenticatedhas more than doubled, andmany of the cards are inhigh grade, according toJoe Orlando, President ofPSA, a division ofCollectors Universe, Inc.(NASDAQ: CLCT).

“In terms of how thiswill impact the collectingmarket, it can be arguedthat this is the most signifi-cant find of vintage base-ball cards ever reportedwhen you evaluate the findin context,” stated Orlando.

“It’s a cliché, but this isone of those once-in-a-life-time discoveries that cameout of nowhere: the ulti-mate buried treasure find. It’s one thing to find a$10,000 autographed base-ball or a $50,000 coin, butit’s extraordinarily rare tofind a single group of vin-tage baseball cards worthmillions of dollars,” saidOrlando.

The auction by HeritageAuctions will be conductedin conjunction with theannual National SportsCollectors Convention.“As the word startedspreading through thehobby grapevine, we’vehad quite a few phone callsand emails from collectorsinterested in obtaining thecards. This will be the firsttime so many high-gradeexamples will be availablefor collectors,” said Ivy.

Kissner is still amazedat the discovery in hisgrandparent’s house. “Here’ssomething my grandfatherstuck in the attic, and here itis 102 years later and we’resaying, ‘Wow!’ Imagineopening a box and realizing

that right in front of you areTy Cobb, and Honus

Wagner!”Heritage Auctions nick-

named the discovery “TheBlack Swamp Find” in refer-ence to the Great BlackSwamp that helped protect

Ohio’s Fort Defiance duringthe 1790’s Northwest Indian

War. To identify and pre-serve their pedigree, the PSAholders for these E98 cardsare specially labeled, “TheBlack Swamp Find.”

Consignments WantedFor Our Fall 2012 Advertising, Toy & Doll Auction

Julia’s recent toy, doll & advertising auction hit just above the million dollar mark against a pre-auction estimate of items sold of approximately $750,000. Results were a clear indication that buyer optimism is up, especially for fresh to the market quality goods that are conservatively estimated. The auction boasted a stellar offering that ranged from early American tin horse drawn pieces to clockwork automotive toys, pedal cars, fine French & German dolls, antique advertising, coin-op, salesman samples, music machines, and much more. For approximately 40 years, Julia’s has established and maintained a sterling reputation for honest and fair dealing, elegant presentation of quality goods, strong and sometimes record prices, and the most competitive commission rates in the industry. We are now accepting quality consignments for our fall Toy & Doll auction. If you are looking for the greatest net return, whether you have one item or an entire collection, please contact us today for a free, no-obligation consultation. Our seller’s commission on expensive items is the lowest in the business at 0%. Below are some results from our most recent auction.
