Pedestal PavingInstalling pavers on pedestals is becoming a common installation technique, as
using this method offers a range of benefi ts.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
In the case of paver failure, pavers laid on pedestals incur a higher risk
of potential injury to pedestrians. When pavers installed on a solid base
crack or break, the damage is cosmetic only. In comparison, pavers
that break in a pedestal installation put pedestrians at risk of falling
through to the paving sub-base. Pedestal heights vary and can reach
up to 900mm, creating a larger gap between the paving and sub-base.
ANSTON’S PEDESTAL PAVING SOLUTION
To address these safety implications, Anston has produced a
reinforced paving product which incorporates a steel mesh in the body
of the paver. This mesh frame ensures that the paver maintains its
structural integrity when cracked or subjected to high impact loads.
The fi nished paved surface can be set perfectly level, as drainage grades
are incorporated into the sub-base beneath. Any unevenness, gradients
or irregularity on the sub-base can be easily accommodated using a
pedestal system.
The gap between the paved surface and sub-base allows the passage
of services such as plumbing and electrical. These are easily and quickly
accessed by removing only the relevant pavers, which are simply placed
back into position once the work is complete.
A pedestal installation provides signifi cant time and cost savings. Minimal
site preparation is required, and pedestals are set into place without
the need for any adhesive. The process of grouting is also no longer
necessary, which results in a cleaner, neater-looking installation and
eliminates the effects of grout smear.
