2016 PROGRAMME

~ 2 ~

The Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts is the longest running

annual festival on the Sunshine Coast. The Festival is operated by a non-

profit society - The Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts -

Purpose

The purposes of this Society are:

- to promote the advancement of the performing arts excellence and

appreciation on the Sunshine Coast.

- to support community access to music and the arts

Aims & Philosophy

- The Festival provides opportunities for musicians and dancers to

perform for appreciative audiences and receive expert adjudication.

Professional adjudicators review performances ranging from solos to

multi-member musical ensembles representing community groups and local

schools.

- The Festival fosters a supportive environment for amateurs in the

performing arts to improve skills and receive constructive evaluation.

- The Festival and its sponsoring society aim to foster education in the

performing arts through workshops, awards and scholarships.

- The Festival provides the opportunity for award-winning Sunshine Coast

performers to participate in provincial and national festivals.

Community and Business Support

Festival acknowledges the support of many individuals and businesses on

the Sunshine Coast without whom this important work could not continue.

Society membership is available to the public by application. Membership

forms will be available on the Festival’s website (www.coastfestival.com)

and at performance venues.

Festival programmes are usually available on-line or in printed form at

Coast outlets (see page 6) before festival classes begin. Performers will

appreciate enthusiastic audiences at all Festival 2016 sessions. Admission

to all events is free but donations are greatly appreciated.

Festival sponsorship opportunities are available and may be discussed with

President Sue Carson or Fundraising Chair Shannon Geue (see page 4).

Rita Attrot has been teaching piano students of all ages and levels for thirty years. She received her early

training at the Victoria Conservatory, where she took her diploma in Teacher Training with Winifred Scott

Wood. Ms. Attrot went on to complete her Bachelor of Music at the University of Victoria with Bruce Vogt

and followed up with a Master of Music degree in performance from the University of Western Ontario

where she studied with Dr. Damjana Bratuz and Ronald Turini. As a graduate student and post graduation,

Rita specialized in Accompanying and Chamber Music.

Ms. Attrot held the position of Staff Accompanist at Acadia University in Nova Scotia for 9 years, worked

as a free-lance accompanist for instrumentalists and singers in Toronto, and served as a coach and

2:00 PM – ELECTRONIC/ACOUSTIC

Raised in Mission on a Christmas tree farm, Calvin Dyck was introduced to the accordion at the age of 5

by a travelling salesman, and started Suzuki Violin at the age of 8.

In spite of a college aptitude test recommending a career as a tug boat captain, Calvin completed a music

degree at Biola University, and went on to complete a Masters and Doctorate in violin performance at the

University of Southern California with minors in choral conducting, music education and music history.

Calvin has been concertmaster for the Vancouver Island Symphony in Nanaimo for 16 years, and directs

the summer show “Symphony by the Sea” for the VIS.

He is the director for the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra, and in 2014 they toured all 10 provinces in

Canada along with the British Columbia Boys Choir. Calvin has played in over 15 countries, and is in

demand as a producer, teacher, conductor and adjudicator.

Calvin currently has about 25 students. Some of his former students are currently studying at

universities across Canada, and one is now a member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
