VKMFS SCHOLARSHIPS AND MEDALLIONS
The Scholarships and Medallions that are presented each year acknowledge the hard work and dedication of each recipient. In addition to the many awards that are already donated, and in order to provide awards in all instrument categories, $1 from each individual and group entry is collected for the Scholarship Fund. These $1 fees provided many medallions and scholarships for all disciplines and has resulted in the addi-tion of these Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festivals Society awards

Gordon Gerrard Gordon Gerrerd is a respected figure in the new genera-tion of Canadian musicians. Trained first as a pianist and subsequently as a specialist in operatic repertoire, Gordon brings a fresh perspective to the podium. His passion and his dedication to producing thrilling musical experiences have endeared him to his fellow musicians and the public alike.
After two successful seasons as Assistant Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Gordon has been promoted to the newly created post of Associate Conductor.
This season, Gordon will lead the VSO in over 30 perfor-mances. He returns to Calgary Opera for their second out-door opera festival, Opera in the Village with a production of Bernstein’s Candide; and he will lead a production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro for Opera McGill. In Novem-ber, he makes his debut with the Regina Symphony Orchestra with Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony.
For four seasons Gordon held the positions of Resident Conductor and Repetiteur for Calgary Opera. He led many productions while in residence in Calgary, including the Ca-nadian premiere of Mark Adamo’s Little Women recorded for national broadcast on CBC’s Saturday Afternoon at the Opera; and a highly successful production of La Bohème chosen specifically to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the company. He was invited back to help launch Calgary Opera’s summer opera festival Opera in the Village with a production of The Pirates of Penzance. During his tenure at Calgary Opera, Gordon was honoured with the Mayor’s Award for Emerging Artists for his contribution to the musi-cal life of the city of Calgary. Gordon has also conducted productions for Opera Hamilton to critical acclaim and was Assistant Conductor for several productions at Opera Lyra Ottawa.
A passionate and gifted educator, Gordon has been engaged as a conductor and lecturer by many institutions, including McGill University, the University of Manitoba and Iowa State University. He has served as conductor for Opera Nu-ova (Edmonton) since 2001 and has been part of the music staffs of the Opera as Theatre Programme at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Canadian Vocal Arts Institute (Montreal), Halifax Summer Opera Workshop and the Undergraduate Opera Studio at the Manhattan School of Music. He has been a regular vocal coach for Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artist Program and l’Opéra de Montréal’s Atelier Lyrique.
As a pianist, Gordon is a respected recital partner. After completing his studies at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, Gordon presented recitals throughout New York City. He was invited to participate in the Wigmore Hall In-ternational Song Competition in London, and was engaged to present a recital with soprano Jane Eaglen for the Edmonton Recital Society.
Larry NickelLarry Nickel is an associate composer of the Canadian Music Centre and an active choral clinician/adjudicator/teacher. He directs the Jubilate Vocal Ensemble and owns Cypress Choral Music, which currently publishes the music of over 80 Canadian composers. Larry was a high school performing arts teacher for 25 years. He directed over 50 stage productions, including Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. In 1993 he won the International Asso-ciation of Jazz Educators award for “outstanding service to jazz education.” His senior choir was selected two years in a row, 2001 and 2002, by Varsity Vocals’ international search for the Best of High School Choirs.
Larry and Tony Funk founded the West Coast Mennonite Chamber Choir in 1990. This choir recorded 13 CD which featured luminaries like Edith Wiens and Ben Heppner and included 120 of Larry’s compositions. The CD sales raised nearly a million dollars for Communitas - a charity dedicated to mentally challenged people.
Larry has sung low bass with the Vancouver Cantata Singers, Chor Leoni and most recently with the Vancouver Chamber Choir for six years.
In 2003 Larry took a leave from teaching to complete a DMA in composition. Requiem for Peace, his doctoral thesis, is an extensive work for chorus and symphony orchestra in 13 languages – premiered by 330 musicians in 2005. Since then it has been gaining world wide attention with performances this year in Sweden, Germany, Azerbaijan, Greece, Kansas City and Vancouver (please come on June 6th!)

They say it takes a village to raise a child.
In our case, we know it takes a community to nurture and encourage a young musician.
For more than 80 years, participating in what is now the Vancou-ver Kiwanis Music Festival has been a yearly milestone for young people in high school bands, choirs and private study. In early Fall, performance pieces are chosen, practiced and perfected. And, while their hours of practice may be done in solitude, these young people are backed by a team of dedicated parents, music teachers and educators, and the hundreds of community volunteers who act as adjudicator secretaries or door ambassadors. Even those who just come to listen lend support to our performers. Without the selfless giving of time and encouragement from this community team, there could be no Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festivals. The number of lives touched by our Festivals over the decades cannot be counted. Many of today’s Festival performers are the sons and daughters and indeed the grandchildren and great-grandchildren -- of former Festival participants. Some have become accomplished and beloved celebrities, like Dal Richards. You’ll find others, like Ian Parker, now internationally renowned and recorded. However, most of our alumni just enjoy playing a tune to soothe the soul or entertain a few friends and family. The essence of our success can be found in the words a mother shared about her young son who she says, ‘practices his violin like crazy,’ every year for the Festival. This is the kind of young person who is bound to later benefit our Society no matter what path he chooses. Our community can be justly proud of its role in helping us make the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festivals the premier of its kind in the British Columbia, with a respected reputation nationally and internationally. Together, we are “inspiring musical excellence” and hope to continue to do so for more generations to come.
Thank you for being a part of the our community.
Welcome to the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival Community.
