RiveR hospitAl FoundAtion BoARd oF diReCtoRsAs the 10th Anniversary of River Hospital approaches, I am

reminded daily of the sacrifice, generosity and tenacious spirit that ensured access to quality healthcare for the River Communities. The individuals, businesses and organizations who pulled together for River Hospital ten years ago should feel a sense of pride, not only for the past accomplishments, but for safeguarding the future success and viability of River Hospital.

As we look to the future for River Hospital and continue to expand to meet the health care needs of the River Communities, we can not forget our past and what (or who) brought us to this point. You were here when we needed you most, and with your continued support, we can ensure that River Hospital will be here when you need us most.

2012 was a year of progress. During 2012 River Hospital launched a significant number of new services. With the assistance of our new Medical Director of Emergency and Inpatient Services we have opened an Observation Unit which will allow us to accommodate patients that need to have a longer period of assessment prior to a decision to proceed with an inpatient admission or to discharge from the Emergency Room.

River Hospital opened River Hospital Convenient Care which is a new service that accommodates patients in need of a follow up visit after having been seen in the Emergency Room, and patients needing routine primary care who are not established patients of River Community Care.

We will begin our mental health services late in the fall of 2012 with the opening of the River Community Wellness Program. Initially we will set up a partial hospitalization program for active duty soldiers for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatment. We will eventually expand our services to the community as well. We are very pleased to report that we have hired the following mental health professionals: Dr. Thomas Keller, Psychiatrist; Bradley Frey, Director of River Community Wellness Program; Kimberly Kernehan, Art Therapist; Cynthia Maguire, Psychologist; Virginia DelBusto-Cohen, Clinical Nurse Specialist.

We began women’s surgical services in August with Dr. Kiri Brandy, who does varicose vein work, women’s colonoscopy and breast care. In November we began our laparoscopic procedures with Dr. Andrew Ogden (OB/GYN) and Dr. Prasad Yitta (General Surgery). Also, in November we agreed to begin orthopedic surgery for Ft. Drum with Dr. Brian Carr.

With these advances we are especially confident of our continued fiscal improvement through 2013.

“Every gesture, every act, every choice we make sends ripples of influence into the future”- Scott Russell Sanders

The success story of an organization is not always in the amount of funds raised but more in the people who invested time, effort and love to shape the future.

Ten years ago employees, community members and local business owners came together to take a determined stand and keep their hospital from closing. I am honored to be able to continue working with those same individuals and groups. Their past tenacity and belief in a future for River Hospital and River Hospital Foundation brought us to where we are today and points us to an active and vital future.

suppoRt the CAmpAign FoR digitAl mAmmogRAphyTo continually meet the expanded needs of those we serve, River Hospital plans to further enhance its Radiology Department with the purchase of digital mammography equipment.

A digital mammogram differs from a film mammogram in that it uses a special detector to capture and convert x-ray energy into a digital image. The procedure and appearance of the machine, and even the images produced, are very similar to a traditional film mammogram—the advantage comes by allowing for earlier and more accurate diagnoses, directly leading to lives saved.

River Hospital Foundation is committed to assisting River Hospital in providing the highest quality of care for the River Communities. Your contribution to the digital mammography campaign will make a difference and touch the lives of your family, your neighbors and the communities we live and work in.

At River Hospital we have expanded our health services for women at every stage of their lives. Our personalized care - delivered by a team of specialists - includes gynecology, mammography, specialty services and minimally invasive surgery. The River Hospital Medical Staff is dedicated to providing wellness options for all women, with resources and referral services to deal with every stage of a woman’s life.

River Hospital is pleased to offer exceptional services for women, close to home. We aim to provide a comfortable and quality experience for all our patients. Dr. Andrew Ogden is providing gynecological services at River Community Care and the Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU). Laparoscopic surgical equipment has been added to the ASU, increasing the ability to perform surgical procedures at River Hospital; such as hysteroscopies, tubal ligations and the removal of ovarian cysts or polyps.

Dr. Kiri Brandy has recently begun offering her services at River Hospital, specializing in vein procedures as well as minimally invasive breast biopsies. Dr. Brandy has brought her expertise in venous surgery to River Hospital; she is the only physician in Northern New York who performs minimally invasive vein surgery. Dr. Brandy will expand her services at River Hospital with the arrival of digital mammography equipment.

In addition to the services provided by Dr. Ogden and Dr. Brandy, River Hospital offers several services for women, including bone density testing, primary health care through River Community Care, mammography and cardiology. For more information on any of the services described, please call River Hospital at 315.482.2511.

While talking with Monique Skelly, you immediately get the sense that she absolutely loves her job. Monique has worked in the Radiology Department at River Hospital for over two years, and has learned at every turn.

She was awarded funding through River Hospital Foundation’s Miracle on the River Tuition Assistance Program to attend a week-long mammography training. While at the training she got a renewed excitement for educating women and helping with early detection of breast cancer.

Monique’s primary goal when performing a mammogram is to make the patient feel comfortable, both physically and emotionally. Over the years, she has

learned techniques to make the exam less painful and more relaxing. Monique’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, which increased her interest and desire to help other women navigate what could be a difficult time in their life. She knows first hand how important it is to have someone caring and compassionate providing this necessary exam.

River Hospital received an approval letter from New York State Department of Health in June 2012 to provide a Partial Hospitalization Program, which will initially serve Active Duty Military suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with the goal to expand services to include the mental health needs of the local community.

There is no similar outpatient program in the vicinity of Ft. Drum. The Holliswood Hospital in Queens, New York provides an inpatient mental health program for active duty military personnel. River Hospital’s program will provide continuity of care for soldiers transitioning from The Holliswood Hospital’s Military Wellness Program. It will also serve as an intervention option for mental health services to reduce potential admissions.

River Community Wellness Program plans to begin providing services in December of 2012. River Hospital has contracted with The Holliswood Hospital, who has extensive experience providing inpatient mental health services to military personnel and their families and is assisting River Hospital in establishing the program. The program will initially provide half-day group and individual therapy five days per week to patients, with an average length of stay between 2-3 weeks; longer when necessary. This service will ultimately expand to two half-day sessions.

Emergency Department patients requiring additional monitoring to determine if admission if necessary are now being cared for in a unit at River Hospital. The unit provides specialized care without the stress or anxieties of the emergency department. The hospital’s new Observation Unit opened in October in the patient care area on the 2nd floor. There are five beds in the unit.

According to Dr. Troy Johnson, Medical Director of Emergency Department & Inpatient Services, the Observation Unit will improve Emergency Department wait times by freeing up exam rooms previously occupied by patients being observed or monitored.

River Hospital Convenient Care was recently launched for patients who may not have a local primary care provider, need follow-up Emergency Department (ED) care and and for those who have an acute minor illness not requiring an ED visit. It will also cover

River Community Care (RCC) patients unable to see their provider with an urgent need, and provide episodic care for patients who are not established RCC patients. To schedule an appointment at River Hospital Convenient Care, please call 315.482.1125.

Dave Furgison works as a sales developer for Snap-On Tools and is on the road quite a lot. At his wife Sherry’s urging, Dave called River Community Care to schedule a routine physical and age appropriate screenings around his busy schedule.

He was quickly scheduled for an appointment with Dr. Aaron Huizenga, who recommended he get a colonoscopy with Dr. Jiri Bem in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit at River Hospital. During his colonoscopy, colon cancer was discovered. Within days, Dave was scheduled for surgery to remove the cancer. The cancer was removed without incident, and Dr. Bem was able to report that Dave was now cancer-free. Dr. Bem went on to say that had he waited any longer to get a colonoscopy, they would not have had the same outcome.

Dave (and Sherry) credit River Hospital for saving his life and will now continue to have the joy of watching his children and grandchildren grow up.

Thanks to the generosity and dedication of River Hospital Auxiliary, the foyer of River Hospital was renovated in the early Spring, just in time for the busy summer season to begin!

River Hospital Auxiliary has supported the needs of River Hospital and its patients since the early 1950’s. For decades, the Hospital Auxiliary, first known as the EJ Noble Hospital Auxiliary, has contributed supplies, equipment, funds and many volunteer hours to enhance the Hospital’s mission of providing quality health care. Through the membership’s dedication and annual fundraisers, this generous group is a valued component of the River Hospital family.

If you are interested in joining River Hospital Auxiliary to assist in enhancing the appearance of River Hospital, please contact Kathy Folino at 315.482.3350.

Since it’s inception in 2003, River Hospital Foundation has been fortunate to assist with the purchase of several pieces of capital equipment items for River Hospital, thanks in large part to generous gifts of unrestricted funds.

An unrestricted gift is simply a gift with no restrictions from the donor on how it is to be utilized. Unrestricted gifts allow River Hospital Foundation the flexibility to determine how best to use the funds, which can applied toward our most pressing priorities.

Unrestricted gifts address priority areas and bring immediate benefits to River Hospital by supporting critical areas of need. Items purchased with unrestricted funds in 2012 include: • Bair Hugger for Ambulatory Surgery Unit• Computers for Physical Therapy• Security locks for River Community Care• Resuscitation system for Emergency Department• Software enhancement for Electronic Health Records in Emergency Department Your unrestricted gift directly supports the mission of River Hospital Foundation. It lets us take advantage of opportunities and meet necessary challenges in a timely manner.

Unrestricted funds are ideal for donors who want to build maximum versatility into their charitable giving and place responsibility with the Foundation for directing gifts where the need is greatest.

Most of tomorrow’s needs can’t be imagined today. Through unrestricted funds, donors can be assured that gifts will be used in the most effective manner to meet River Hospital’s needs now and in the future.

It may have been the compassionate nurse who made your stay more comfortable, or the skilled Physical Therapist who shared an understanding word during a therapy session. Perhaps it was a hug from someone at River Community Care that eased your child’s fears, or a visit from a staff member who treated you more like an old friend than a hospital patient.

There are dozens of ways the staff at River Hospital make a difference in the lives of our patients. We hear about them every day - through letters, phone calls and other expressions of gratitude. We enjoying hearing about your experiences and what made a difference to you.

Your generosity will enhance the experience of future patients - by helping us purchase new technologies, modernize our facility and introduce new programs while maintaining River Hospital’s proud hallmark of personalized care.

If you’ve been touched by the River Hospital staff, why not pass your exceptional experience along with an honorary donation

to our hospital? Your contribution will pave the way for new avenues of health and hope...and benefit others in need. For more information on the Grateful Patient Program, contact River Hospital Foundation.

Bobbie Trimble has been a summer resident of the 1000 Islands since the 1960’s, living on an island on the St. Lawrence River, as well as in Clayton. Bobbie has supported River Hospital Foundation since its inception in 2003. When asked what motivated her to give, her response was simple - “I saw how significant the need was for a medical facility for the River Communities, and I wanted to do what I could to ensure that facility would always be there.”

Bobbie has used River Hospital several times as a patient and each time has been grateful for a pleasant experience.

River Hospital Foundation is honored to count Bobbie as one of its most dedicated donors!

The Miracle on the River Scholarship and Tuition Assistance Program supports the future of health care in the River Communities. By investing in education River Hospital can continue to grow and provide quality healthcare vital to future generations of River Community residents.

In April 2006, River Hospital Foundation launched The Miracle on the River Scholarship Program to help promote the future of healthcare in the community. Since the spring of 2006, $24,259.00 has been awarded to sixteen River Hospital employees and twenty-three area high school seniors in an effort to promote continued education in the healthcare field.

“I feel this is a great opportunity to get a current overview of many areas that impact healthcare and ultimately River Hospital. I would like to play a contributing role in our efforts to grow and improve the facility.” Judy Hunter-Eves, River Hospital employee and 2012 Miracle on the River Tuition Assistance recipient.

The Miracle on the River Scholarship Program is supported by River Hospital Foundation’s annual Scholarship Dinner, gifts of individual donors and annual pledges. Friends of River Hospital and River Hospital Auxiliary have played an important role in sustaining the program, by pledging annually $2,500.00 and $1,000.00 respectively. The success of the Miracle on the River Scholarship Program would not be possible without continued community support and the dedication of our donors and volunteers. Thank you to all who have given so generously to this investment in the future of healthcare.
