Issue
As you will notice, there is quite a bit different about this latest issue of our University magazine. It has been several years since the last redesign of Mount Vernon NOW, and we felt it was time to give the magazine a facelift. Our aim was to provide a more modern look and feel, and to provide a template for regular and relevant content going forward. We hope you will be pleased with what you find inside.
Among the changes you’ll notice, the magazine has been renamed NOW, which has always been the familiar identifying title for the magazine among our constituencies. We’ve changed the paper we’re printing on, moving to an uncoated stock providing a better platform for photos and graphics and easier readability.
As for content, we’ve created some recurring sections like News & Notes, featuring campus highlights and interesting perspectives; Destination Education, in this issue showcasing the Collegians Chorale and their recent excursion throughout Eastern Europe; and the
EDITOR'S NOTE
Chaplain’s Corner, where University Chaplain Joe Noonen offers his unique perspective on our shared commitment to faith and learning.
The new (and hopefully improved) NOW will be distributed twice each year, each spring and fall. This will allow the University to maximize its resources in communicating with Alumni, churches, and other invested partners.
We do hope you enjoy this first edition of the redesigned Mount Vernon Nazarene University publication, NOW, and we would love to hear your feedback. Please feel free to let us know what you think via email at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Jeffrey ScottEditor
BEHIND THE REDESIGN
The redesign of this magazine reflects the good work of a large number of individuals across the MVNU campus. But we would be remiss if we did not recognize the efforts of MVNU alumnus Arthur Cherry (’05), an outstanding graphic designer currently living and working in Kansas City. Arthur runs his own design company, Design By AAD, and has been instrumental in helping us translate our conceptual ideas into a beautiful new layout and structure. For more information about his work, we would encourage you to visit his website, arthuradesign.com.

NEWS & NOTESMVNU PROFESSOR SURVIVES ELEPHANT ATTACK An African wildlife safari turned harrowing for Dr. Randy Cronk and his wife, Becky, while venturing through the Okavango Delta near Maun, Botswana, in June. As part of their “African Encounter” vacation through southern Africa, the couple’s safari group encountered an elephant about 70 yards away. The elephant began to move toward them. “The fear sets in really fast,” said Dr. Cronk, as he described running for a fallen tree about 30 yards away as six or seven elephants joined the charge. Diving under the tree, “I could see and feel an elephant tusking and kicking and trunking at my feet,” he said. Becky was in the rear of the group and attempted to take cover near Randy. She was kicked or stomped on at least three times, on her legs and back, after feeling a large crash up against the side her head. The whole incident lasted maybe 30 seconds and was over just as quickly as it began. The one-hour walk back to camp was difficult, especially for Becky, who was carried at times, due to a large hematoma on her right thigh. Two doctors on the tour, from New Zealand and England, tended to Becky’s injuries that evening before a helicopter evacuated her and Randy to a medical clinic. X-rays verified no broken bones, but significant blood loss, bruising, whiplash, and a possible concussion. Randy suffered only minor cuts and bruises. The Cronks remained with the tour, and Randy admits he’d be willing to take another walking safari, though Becky is understandably more hesitant. “I don’t know how we survived. I’ve been praising God for our lives every day since,” said Becky.
THE SCHEMEDr. Robert Hamill, MVNU Vice President for Finance, has recently published a legal thriller. The Scheme is the story of Mark Holman, a recent law school graduate, who discovers his new employer is up to no good. Meanwhile, Mark struggles with his own lack of faith as his wife’s prayers keep in from harm.
Dr. Hamill has been an attorney for almost 30 years and a professor and administrator in a variety of academic settings. His new book is available on Amazon and at outskirtspress.com/thescheme.E

ETERNAL. SO TO SPEAK. We probably don’t have to tell you that the “eternal” part of our beloved Eternal Flame has been a bit, well, more occasional than eternal throughout much of its existence. While it has become perhaps MVNU’s most recognized landmark, the actual flame itself has been unfortunately vulnerable to regular periodic outages. That’s why we’re thrilled that the newest upgrade to our cherished symbol—the fifth such redesign since it was dedicated in 1970—provides such a consistent and visible blaze. Here’s hoping the past few weeks are a sign of things to come!
LIFE CHANGING This summer, at the Church of the Nazarene General Assembly, MVNU unveiled a series of videos focused on the University tag line, Life Changing. The videos tell the story of the University through the life-changing impact of the MVNU experience on students, alumni, faculty and staff, as well as the lives of those they touch. Dr. Henry Spaulding has used the videos in speaking to the campus community, Nazarene leaders, and other constituencies. “Our work is indeed life-changing, and we ought to take great pride in that. This is an important reminder of lasting impact MVNU is making for the Kingdom around the world,” he explains. You can view these videos on the MVNU YouTube channel at youtube.com/MVNU1968.
#MVNULIFECHANGINGWhat does Life Changing mean to you? The was the question we posed this summer through the social media platforms Twitter and Instagram. See what others had to say by searching for the hashtag #MVNUlifechanging, and let us know your answer!

PEDALING FOR A CAUSE MVNU’s partnership with The Luke Commission—fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic through the M2540 Swaziland initiative—got a boost this year from 2 young men with a different idea of how to spend their Spring Break. For a year and a half, Cody Raudebaugh and Mitchell Adams had taken cycling trips together. “But we wanted to do something bigger than ourselves,” said Cody. Cody and Mitch began to cast a vision to the campus community to ride from MVNU to Washington, D.C., to raise money and awareness for the ministry. “Cody and Mitch cast the vision in our mission and ministry chapel, and they had a group,” University Chaplain Joe Noonen explained. “They took care of every single logistical detail, completed all the paperwork to get approved, pulled together support resources, and on the first day of spring break, rode off campus on their way.” Twenty students, 13 men and 7 women, agreed
to tackle the 500-mile trek to Washington, D.C., over the course of 9 days. The group biked 70 to 75 miles a day from Ohio through West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland—even through parts of the Appalachian Mountains. “Many churches opened their doors to us,” explained Cody. “God prepared those places ahead of time for us. They fed us breakfasts and dinners. We shared stories about The Luke Commission and left pamphlets and magazines with them.” After all accounts were settled and expenses paid, the 20-members team raised $8,508 for The Luke Commission. “Cody and Mitch represent all that is good about MVNU. Their vision and passion represent what can happen when we live in loving obedience,” said Noonen. “I have heartfelt respect and gratitude for this memorable experience.” For more information about MVNU’s M2540, visit mvnu.edu/m2540. For more information about The Luke Commission, please visit lukecommission.org.
MVNU LEGACY STUDENTS New students and parents gathered for the 11th Annual Alumni
Legacy Family Photo during Move-In Day on August 30. Both Tradi-tional Undergraduate and Graduate and Professional Studies alumni were represented. Pictured are 87 parents and 56 students – our largest group since the tradition first began! “I’m thrilled with the continued sup-port of our alumni who continue to leave a legacy, and to those new students whose MVNU journey has just begun,” said Tom West, MVNU Director of Alumni Relations.
FACULTY AND STAFF HONOREDDr. Rick Williamson, Professor of Biblical Literature, and John Walchle, Associate Director of Enterprise Systems, were named 2013 MVNU Faculty and Staff Members of the year, respectively. The awards were presented during the annual University Dinner on August 26. A number of additional faculty and staff were honored for their many years of service. You can read more about the University Dinner at MVNU’s News page online.

A magnet once hung on my refrigerator. It read “Today is what happens while we are planning for tomorrow.” While partly true, the statement misses a great deal. MVNU leans toward the future, but depends upon its deep roots to bring focus on tomorrow. In fact, every year we invite a new group of students into a story that began long before they arrived. Largely, the work of the president involves helping MVNU build toward the future upon its rich roots.
The national media relentlessly predicts a dire future for higher education in America. Economic, social, political, and moral challenges chip away at the confidence of some. Yet, the faculty, staff, administration, and trustees find inspiration from Moses as he addressed those about to enter Canaan,
“If you say to yourself, ‘These nations are more numerous than I, how can I dispossess them?’ do not be afraid of them. Just remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all of Egypt . . . the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and the outstretched arm by which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord will do the same to all the peoples of whom you are afraid” Deuteronomy 7: 17-19 Moses is speaking to a new generation of people who,
for the most part, did not experience the flight from Egypt. Literally, he told the story again to remind them that the future belongs to those who can lean toward the future in clear sight of history. Those who count out places like MVNU do not know that our history goes to the creation of the world. Our ancestors “wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground” (Hebrews 11:38b). We follow a simple carpenter and dare to believe the totality of all that exists will someday come into submission to him. Yet we know that walls need
to be built, journeys taken, tears shed, failures acknowledged, and victories won. We have good work to do! According to the writer of Hebrews, “faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the convictions of things not seen” (11:1). The Christian tradition offers us the vantage point by which planning and remembering take place.
Tomorrow is shaped by optimism borne of faith and memory. The University is thinking about the kind of people we want to be, the Church we serve, the academic programs we offer, and the manner in which we intend to use our resources. Our “Core Convictions” offer a glimpse of our roots,
Mount Vernon Nazarene University is an intentional Christian community seeking to embody several core values that serve as touchstones for accomplishing our educational mission. These values are:
• A vital Faith that integrates every aspect of Mount Vernon Nazarene University.• A vital partnership with the Church, both the Church of the Nazarene as well as the broader Christian community.• Provide a quality Education framed by the liberal arts and professional competence.• The context of a Community shaped by mutual respect and accountability as expression of Wesleyan-Holiness theology.• Character as the expression of the moral formation inherent in our educational mission.• Stewardship of the resources entrusted to this University.
The University, as a Christian community, reflects upon the sources of wisdom illuminated by the Judeo-Christian faith.

Core Convictions ofMount Vernon Nazarene University
In fact, every freshman begins his or her study with us by taking a course titled “Discipleship of the Christian Mind.” We believe that the mind, heart, and body are joined together through the firm conviction and practice of an integrated education in partnership with the Christian church, especially the Church of the Nazarene. We believe that a community shaped by mutual respect and accountability can frame a quality education with a liberal arts context and professional focus. We intend to graduate accountants, social workers, pastors, and others, who have been exposed to literary masterpieces, artistic and musical achievements, and momentous historical events. People who can read, write, analyze, and lead with wisdom form the long-range trajectory of our community. Most of all, we want our graduates to embody a character capable of creative and principled engagement with culture.
Our “Strategic Plan” grows from our “Core Convictions.” Essentially, our plan points the particular way we intend to embody convictions,
• Disciplined Reflection on the nature and role of the Christian university in the twenty-first century.• Become a resource for understanding Wesleyan- Holiness theology and its impact upon the world. • Develop sustainable, competitive programs and initiatives that promote critical thinking, academic rigor, and professional excellence.• Engender a University Culture characterized by hospitality, maturity, personal growth, service and mutual respect.• Develop structures, processes and policies that enhance financial stability.
Our students arrive with iPads, Smartphones, laptops, and an entire digital world at their fingertips. Students have email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr accounts. When a professor makes a comment in class, students can “google” for accuracy. The amount of data and the reach of the web are changing the way we educate. While our values have not and will not change, the way we think of a university and the way we educate will require significant attention. The surge of online classes, programs, and universities will inevitably change what mentorship means. Does this mean that the relationship between professor and student will be inferior to the past? There will be a difference, but whether the interchange is face-to-face or via the web, mentorship remains critical.
MVNU intends to think deeply and widely regarding the resources of the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition. Theology engages all aspects of the University. A coherent faith requires intellectual sweat. We intend to be a resource for the Church as we think together about what it means to see the world through the cross. The words of Paul inform our work, “For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,
Thoughts? See what others are saying. #MVNUNOW
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18). Our University lives in the shadow the cross. Richard John Neuhaus, former editor of First Things, suggests that universities are prone to lose their way. The ever present challenge is to renounce the easy dichotomies of our time and renew our efforts to bring our understanding into submission to the Christian faith. Wesley
understood that education exists to turn our bias from self-
will, pride, anger, and the love of the world.
Such an education subdues wrong passion. Fundamentally, an education in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition seeks to restore our rational nature to the Lordship of Christ. We intend to offer a
Christ-formed education. Such a vision requires gospel-disciplined
intellectual pursuit. Academic vision requires
the daily work of providing sustainable academic programs. Graduates expect
meaningful vocations upon commencement. Teachers, human resource directors, missionaries, medical doctors, pastors, and nurses must compete in the marketplace with those prepared at other institutions. The educational mission of the University means that our students are educated by professors who are fully prepared. Plans are underway to extend our offerings to engineering, dental hygiene, and financial planning, with additional graduate programs in social work and nursing. Our educational mission includes
preparation for meaningful careers. After all, there is no conflict
between a disciplined mind and a disciple.
A Christ-formed education takes place in community, virtual or actual. The organic community of faith must permeate every relationship
on campus. We are moved by others for the sake of
Christ. Love surpasses and embodies the law. According to
Paul, “[love] rejoices in the truth” (1 Corinthians 13:6b). The point is the community
that engenders Christ understands the crucial role of embodiment. We love “not in word or speech, but in truth and action” (1 John 3:18b). Our community testifies to the creeds we proclaim.
Finally, our long-term vision takes form through processes that promote sustainability. Stewardship means that we recognize the gifts entrusted to our campus. Our mission requires diligence regarding capital. The University looks like buildings and budgets until we see the eternal significance of our faculty, staff, and students. MVNU intends to honor the resources entrusted to us.
When I drive onto the MVNU campus, a subtle joy takes hold of my heart. I know that on any given day transformation, enlightenment, and/or renewed vision might make a difference for someone. Working on this campus requires a watchful eye, an expectant heart, and an engaged intellect.
Great days are ahead for MVNU!

COLLEGIANS CHORALE MISSION TRIP MAY14-27, 2013
The Mount Vernon Nazarene University Collegians Chorale engaged in a life changing mission/concert trip on the Eurasia region of the Church of the Nazarene to Croatia, Austria, and Hungary. The group of twenty-seven was comprised of 21 students, director Dr. Robert Tocheff and his wife Diana, and Collegians alumni Dr. Robert Mahaffey and his wife Elaine. Dr. Mahaffey pastors the Church of the Nazarene in West Chester, Ohio, and serves as Vice Chairman of the MVNU Board of Trustees.
The group partnered in ministry with Nazarene missionaries David and Betsy Scott, who serve in Croatia, as well as with Hungarian national Nazarene leaders Imre and
Our trip began in the stunning, historic walled city of Dubrovnik. After an enjoyable tour of the walls and city, we headed up the beautiful Adriatic coast to the city of Split—noted for the architectural wonder of Diocletian’s Palace and other ancient edifices. The choir sang to appreciative crowds that gathered in the excellent acoustical setting of the ruins.
The purpose of the mission/concert trips abroad is to allow the MVNU students to use their talents and what they learn in the classroom to minister to people in another culture, to expand their concept of outreach beyond familiar surroundings, and to see how God is working in the Church of the Nazarene in other parts of the world." —Dr. Robert Tocheff

ZAGREB, CROATIA AND SURROUNDINGS
VIENNA AND EISENSTADT AUSTRIA
BUDAPEST, HUNGARY
Reaching Zagreb we understood that our ministry would reach a new level as we begin to assist missionaries David and Betsy Scott in their efforts to begin the Nazarene Church in Croatia. The Scotts shared their hearts, and explained how we would be ministering in the coming days at five main ministry points:
1. At the thrift store that the Scotts have begun for the community, the choir picked up trash, then sang for those who gathered.2. In concert at Sacred Heart Basilica.3. Through singing, playing and giving gifts to children at a gazebo in the prominent town park. 4. We offered a concert and an encouraging devotional by Dr. Mahaffey at an English-speaking service at Kuslanova, where the Scotts are partnering. 5. In the small city of Koprivnica where the Scotts are wanting to expand the church, we sang and shared with this gathering of warm and friendly people.
We toured this renowned musical city then presented a ministry concert at the Minoriten Kirche. On the way to Hungary we stopped in Eisenstadt and were able to sing in the famous Haydn Hall and Chapel.
The heightened emotions and the realization of how big our God is anywhere in the world confirmed our mission to engage other cultures and realize the MVNU vision To Change the World with the Love of Christ.
Having assisted the start-up of the Nazarene Church in Hungary in the 1990’s, it was a joy for Collegians to return to partner with Imre and Maria Gusztin. After a moving service at St. Emery Church where the choir provided music for a mass followed by a full concert, the Gusztins determined that an effective ministry effort in Budapest would be a joint service with the Nazarene congregation and the Budakeszi Methodist Church. Joining us at these two concerts was Field Strategy Coordinator – Central Europe Jay Sunberg and his wife Teanna. Following a lunch of incredible Hungarian Goulash, we headed east to the small city of Hajdúhadház to celebrate with this growing Nazarene congregation. Indeed this was another highlight of the trip as the people joined us in “How Great Is Our God” and as we shared our repertoire to this appreciative crowd.

ProfilesMVNU scholarships and endowments are important to both the students who receive them and the donors who generously provide them.
JENESIS TORALLBA
SOPHOMORE, PASTORAL MINISTRIES
WHY MVNU?“I felt like that was where God wanted me. Honestly, everything just kept lining up for me to attend. It was as if God was saying, ‘I can do awesome things with you if you’re obedient.’”
FUTURE GOALS Jenesis feels that God has gifted her with a passion and talent for music. She fells called to honor that gift, and hopes to one day serve as a Worship Pastor.
SCHOLARSHIPS“These scholarships have been an incredible blessing, not just financially, but also by motivating me to do my very best. It certainly took a huge weight off of my shoulders—just knowing that someone was willing to support me and that they believe in me.”
THANK YOU “Thank you for believing in me! Not only is your support providing me with the opportunity to learn in the best environment available, but it is also preparing me for the rest of my life.”
Bill and Chris Culler live in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Bill is a Buyer for a government contractor and Chris is an accounting supervisor. Bill graduated from MVNU in 1996 with a degree in Business Administration and managed the campus bookstore for a year.
A number of years ago, Bill and Chris were looking for a way to give back to the MVNU community. “We felt that an Endowment would create a self-sustaining scholarship fund for many years to come. Our goal is to help as many students as possible that need assistance,” explains Bill. The endowment awards financial assistance to students who maintain a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate a financial need. “We felt that this would reach a significant number of students that have a true desire to learn and succeed in their University experience.”

WOMEN’S SOCCER MVNU V. UNION (KY.) COLLEGE SEPT. 7
Keith Veale, a long-time member of the Mount
Vernon Nazarene University athletic department, has
been promoted to serve as next athletic director.
Veale, who will become only the sixth athletic director
in the school's 45-year history, will take over for Paul
Swanson, who has served in that role for the past
three years. Swanson will continue in his role as the
volleyball coach at MVNU - a position he has held for
28 seasons while amassing over 1,000 victories - and
also continue teaching.
"Keith Veale is a
respected member of
the athletic program at
MVNU," said Dr. Henry
Spaulding, MVNU's
President. "His long
tenure as our baseball
coach establishes his
credentials for this
new assignment. We
anticipate that our
athletic program
will thrive under his
capable leadership."

It was the fall of 1980, and I was finishing my time as a student at Mount Vernon Nazarene College. Like many who were here at that time, I had the privilege of sitting in classes taught by Dr. David Cubie. As a parting gift of our time together, Dr. Cubie gave me an autographed copy of a manuscript he was working on at the time: Into His Likeness: Various Papers on the Doctrine of Entire Sanctification.
I have carried that with me all these years, making sure it was always displayed prominently on my
bookshelves. In truth, parts of it got me into some trouble in seminary when I quoted from it and discovered that some Church of the Nazarene theologians were not all on the same page.
CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
Recently, since being named University Chaplain, I took it off the shelf once again in an attempt to encounter the heart of Dr. Cubie. As I dove into his insights, these words—pages 66 and 67 of my autographed early edition—stopped me in my tracks. I believe these timeless words frame the call of the Christian college or university:
The Christian college, because it is in the world but not of the world, has the responsibility to counteract the influence of the prevailing culture … Mount Vernon Nazarene College, whether recognizing the magnitude of the task or not, has chosen in its goal statements to take on this responsibility … it must work toward transformation recognizing that transformation of individuals and through them society is both necessary and a gracious possibility.
The next time I see Dr. Cubie, I am going to read these words to him and ask what he thinks of the Vision Statement of Mount Vernon Nazarene University: To change the world with the love of Christ.
