Powerful CommunitiesCommunities are often defined by a variety of things: landmarks, popular streets, business and industry. Throughout our region, our cities and towns contain local points of pride—for Williamsport perhaps it is Little League Baseball; for Lewisburg, Bucknell University; for Danville, Geisinger Medical Center. The role of our educational systems, health care providers and tourist attractions are logical points of reference.
Communities are also identified through heritage: the role of the river during the lumber era, the debatable presence of buffalo rooming through Union County and the many beautiful mansions across the region that echo a time long ago.
From Mifflinburg to Riverside, Selinsgrove to Williamsport, and Bloomsburg to Lock Haven, our region is rich in history and blessed with wonderful landmarks and institutions too numerous to list. While many of these markers identify us within the region, they do not truly define us. Powerful communities are created by people. Our past is important and economic strength is critical but it is the people in a community that make the difference.
FCFP is committed to strengthening the cities and towns across north central PA and it is our belief that we will succeed when we work together across communities. Sharing our experiences, resources, and leaders will benefit our boroughs, towns, cities and counties alike.
There are more than 400,000 people living in Clinton, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Union, Snyder, Sullivan, and Tioga Counties and each of us has a role in making a difference in our region for years to come.
Sincerely,
Davie Jane Gilmour, Ph.D.Chairman of the Boar
Passionate GivingThe First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania has a long and proud history. It is hard to imagine that what started with $33.00 over 96 years ago has resulted in a regional community foundation today with assets approaching $70M.
This organization has been built through the generosity of hundreds of donors who shared in a vision for the future—a vision centered on the community they called home. The Foundation holds 367 funds that are reflective of the different hopes and dreams of their founders. Hundreds of donors have entrusted the Community Foundation with ensuring that their passions are supported in perpetuity, even at a time when they no longer can make the financial commitments to the organizations closest to theirs hearts. The Foundation is the keeper of legacies, and the preservation of those legacies is at the core of our mission.
Our funds are as diverse as the interests of the donors that created them. The flexibility of our organization allows us to create funds that truly reflect the philanthropic passions of our donors. From arts and culture to recreation, healthcare to human services, civic projects to education; our grantmaking spans the spectrum and makes a difference in our collective communities.
Passionate people are what make communities strong and that is the essence of our work. For nearly a century, we have remained committed to creating powerful communities through passionate giving. The following pages highlight the Foundation’s work across the region in 2012 but it is vital to understand that this work reflects almost a century of passionate giving.
Sincerely,
Jennifer D. WilsonPresident & CEO

The Community Foundation is fortunate to have over 225 people volunteer for our organization, by helping to meet community needs. The time, energy and skills that these volunteers invest in our community change peoples’ lives forever.
We are grateful for the dedication of these volunteers—without them, we would not have a partnership that allows us to keep pace with the needs of our community. Thank you!

“....by far, one of the best community awareness events we have ever sponsored,”
Ways to Give
Some came to the Flick on Brick event to spend a beautiful October evening socializing outdoors; others turned out as staunch supporters of the Union County Community Fund (UCCF). Still others wanted to satisfy their curiosity—“What is a Flick on Brick?” The “Flick” was the blockbuster Ironman; the “Brick” was a courtyard wall at the Packwood House Museum in Lewisburg. The event was a new, annual fundraiser that was “by far, one of the best community awareness events we have ever sponsored,” according to Dawn Linn, the FCFP’s Vice President of Planned Philanthropy.
The film provided a backdrop for old friends and new acquaintances to connect, celebrate and enjoy complimentary wine, beer and gourmet cinema fare. It was also an opportunity to raise awareness of the UCCF within the community and open a new avenue for giving. The Community Foundation utilized new technology to market the event, sending out invitations via social media. This approach, Ms. Linn believes, attracted new donors who might not be reached using traditional marketing tools. The Union County Flick on Brick evening raised $1,700; a similar event held in Williamsport in May 2012 brought in $5,100.

Ways to Annually Support the Foundation
Annual gifts support the mission of the Community Foundation and allow the
organization to enhance programs and help meet emerging needs of our communities
while assisting with daily operations.
This annual fund provides important unrestricted support that allows us to provide a high level of expertise and service as we work with our nonprofit partners to meet the greatest needs
of the residents of our region. A gift to this fund will ensure that the Foundation will continue to provide critical support to hundreds of nonprofits that improve the lives of our neighbors.
The Community Funds were created to enhance the quality of life in each of the regions that we serve. These
Funds allow the FCFP Board of Directors its greatest flexibility in making grants to the community. The Community Funds provide a permanent discretionary resource for nonprofits. Gifts to these Funds will address ever-changing needs—including future needs that cannot be anticipated today.
Rider Park is one of Lycoming County’s and Pennsylvania’s greatest recreational areas—867 acres of protected land available to the
public 365 days a year for hiking, trail running, mountain bike riding, cross country skiing and other low impact recreational activities. This Fund was established to provide grants from the fund’s principal and income to offset the operational costs of Rider Park.
Are you looking for a unique gift for that special someone? The Foundation offers an inspiring and convenient way to give
while helping to support the invaluable work of the nonprofit organizations in our community—a Charitable Gift Certificate. The certificates are available in increments of $25, $50 or $100 to share with family, friends and/or business associates.
As a purchaser of a gift certificate, you receive an acknowledgement for your tax purposes.
The program works like any gift certificate: recipients of the certificates redeem them with the Foundation, directing the gift to a charity or charities, in our region, to benefit. The certificate has a one year expiration date.
This program allows businesses in Pennsylvania to make contributions to approved organizations and receive tax credits in return for their gifts.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania created the EITC Program in 2001. The Community Foundation has been an approved EITC organization since 2002, and grants through the program have provided area teachers with funding to bring exciting new educational opportunities to our students.
Gifts to the EITC program fund: classroom visits and workshops with authors, artists, and performers; and equipment and materials for new, innovative programs that would not otherwise be funded.

The First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania has created a Legacy Society to recognize individuals who have named the Community Foundation as the beneficiary of any type of planned or deferred gift. By designating the Community Foundation as a beneficiary, you are ensuring the future of our community and making a difference forever. The gift may come to us for unrestricted use—to meet the changing and most urgent needs of the community—or for a named fund—to serve a specific purpose or to benefit a specific charity. Either way, the impact is lasting.

Connor’s Connection FundDonor advised, pass-through fund to support educational needs of autistic youth in Lycoming County.
Each donor has a unique reason for establishing a charitable fund at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania, but none is more deeply personal than that of Shelly and Ray Mattie, who created Connor’s Connection, a donor-advised, pass-through fund that provides grants for activities, supplies and technology to help autistic children in Lycoming County. When their first-born son, Connor, was diagnosed with autism, the Matties dedicated themselves to helping him achieve his full potential. They also committed themselves to raising community awareness of the needs of autistic children and helping other parents meet those needs. Mr. and Mrs. Mattie, Connor and his brother Sam do everything as a family unit. All are on hand to participate in grant check presentations. Both Connor and Sam
participate in an annual lemonade-stand fundraiser—which raises thousands of dollars—to benefit Hope Early Intervention Services for children with special needs. This past year, Connor, cheered on by his family, ran in a 5K to raise awareness for children with autism. “I want to run for autism so people understand,” Connor said. The teachers and staff at C.E. McCall Middle School in Montoursville understand. In elementary school, Connor struggled academically and socially. Today he is an honor roll student and was named Student of the Month. The difference, Mr. Mattie believes, is the support Connor, and other special needs students at the school, receive. “We have a team behind us, including a super special ed teacher who believes that any child can be reached.” Connor’s Connection was created to ensure that autistic children throughout the region have the chance to be reached.

Williamsport KnightsHome AssociationScholarship Fund
$40,000 for graduates of St. John Neumann Regional High School
When the Williamsport Home Association of the Knights of Columbus, realized $40,000 from the sale of property in 2012, its board of directors turned to the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania to create a scholarship fund carrying on the organization’s work in perpetuity. The Williamsport Knights Home Association Scholarship Fund will provide annual scholarships for graduating students of St. John Neumann Regional Academy who are continuing their education at an accredited college or university, according to Arthur Girio, treasurer of the Home Association. For Mr. Girio (above left) and fellow Knights members, including Charles Mertes, Edward Mertes, and Andrew Johnson (above right), charitable work and service has been a way of life—beginning with service to country. Just 17 when he registered for the draft in 1943, Mr. Girio served in North Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Austria. He returned home to join the Army Reserve and work for the
Veterans Adminstration and Susquehanna Homes Company which built many homes purchased by young veterans. He received an accounting degree from Lycoming College in 1957 and then set out to build a company—the Girio Agency. Licensed as an insurance agent, real estate agent and an investment counselor, Mr. Girio is still active in the business. Serving others has been the passion of this member of The Greatest Generation. Mr. Girio has worked for more than 25 years to help build Camp Victory, the Millville, PA, camp for children with special medical needs. He founded a scholarship fund, administered by the Pennsylvania Lions District 14G and named in his honor. The Art Girio Scholarship, to date, has awarded more than $76,000 to worthy students. With the establishment of the Knights Home scholarship at the FCFP, Mr. Girio and his fellow members, have the satisfaction of knowing their good works will live on after them.

Williamsport SymphonyJunior Strings
$14,000 to develop a strings program for elementary & middle school students.
Grantmaking at Work
Few opportunities exist for today’s young string musicians to participate in ensemble learning and full orchestral performances. The First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania is helping the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra (WSO) create such opportunities with a $14,000 grant from the Williamsport Lycoming Community Fund. Grant dollars have allowed the WSO to launch the Williamsport Symphony Junior Strings program and expand the Williamsport Symphony Youth Orchestra (WSYO) and Young Artists Competition outreach programs. The Junior Strings program, led by Matthew Radspinner, Williamsport Area High School’s Director of Orchestras, is targeted to advanced elementary, middle school and young high school students, according to Janet Harris, WSO Executive Director. “This is a feeder program for young musicians, ages 8 to 15, who are not ready for
the Youth Orchestra,” Ms. Harris says. Youth Orchestra members range from age 12 to 20. The Junior Strings presented its first concert in early November playing Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, among other pieces, at the First United Methodist Church in Willamsport. In February, the Junior Strings joined the WSYO—now under the direction of Dr. William Ciabattari—in concert at the Community Arts Center. “The WSO provides students with a high quality, full-featured strings program and a full orchestra experience on an ongoing basis,” Ms. Harris says. Through social media, print media and aggressive outreach to area school districts, the organization is promoting programs that provide enrichment experiences for the young people who will ultimately become Williamsport Symphony Orchestra instrumentalists and audience members.

Charitable gift certificates are meaningful gifts that keep on giving. The certificates can be purchased from the Foundation, in denominations of $25, $50 and $100, and given to friends, family, colleagues or customers who then choose the charity that receives the donation. The donor earns a tax deduction; the certificate recipient experiences the joy of giving to a cause close to his or her heart. Jason Moyer, Chief Investment Officer and founding partner of Hudock Moyer Wealth Resources, first learned about charitable gift certificates at the Foundation’s 2011 Festive Night of Light celebration. Recognizing the value of the certificates, he buys ten $100 certificates each year. “Most people don’t like gift exchanges,” he says.
“Materialism is waning; people prefer the experience of a dinner or party with friends.” By giving charitable gift certificates to friends and family, he is enabling them to give. His recipients, who have redeemed their certificates, have chosen to give to a variety of Lycoming County nonprofits. Having served on the boards of such organizations as the Community Arts Center, the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, Williamsport Chamber Choir and Orchestra and the Community Theater League, Mr. Moyer understands the importance of supporting nonprofits. His firm has a well-established corporate culture of giving back to the community.
Charitable Gift CertificatesJason Moyer celebrates the holidays giving 10 First Community Foundation Partnership gift certificates to friends and family.

Uptown Music Collective
$10,000 for orchestral rock project with Williamsport Area High School Orchestra.
Grantmaking at Work
On April 25 through 27, the Uptown Music Collective (UMC) and the Williamsport High School Orchestra, under the direction of Matthew Radspinner, will perform Pink Floyd’s The Wall at the Community Arts Center (CAC) with CAC Executive Director, Rob Steele, producing the event. The collaborative performance is made possible by First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania’s $10,000 grant to the UMC for arranger Rob Byham’s complete orchestration of the Pink Floyd album. The Wall, which was released in 1979, holds an enduring appeal to young musicians, according to Dave Brumbaugh, Executive Director of UMC, the Williamsport-based nonprofit music school which draws student, primarily ages ten to 18, from seven counties. “The Wall is a touchstone for our students, as is Pink
Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon,” says Mr. Brumbaugh. UMC students are mounting the production. They have worked with Mr. Byham on the orchestration, and will direct, write and be involved in set design. The set, which will include the eponymous nine-foot wall, will be built by the Community Arts Center in collaboration with the Pennsylvania College of Technology Construction Club. A cast of 30 UMC musicians and vocalists will take the stage with Williamsport High School Orchestra musicians for a total of 70 to 80 on stage for the performance. The UMC first performed The Wall in 2006. “We were a very young organization,“ says Mr. Brumbaugh. “It was our first time on a big stage and our first time at the Community Arts Center. We have come a long way since then.”

Scholarship Fund
In 1993, Kay and Allen Ertel established a scholarship foundation, in memory of their adopted son, Taylor, to benefit students who have been placed in foster care at some point in their lives. For nearly 20 years, Mr. and Mrs. Ertel administered the fund, soliciting donations from friends and family. In 2012, looking to ensure that the scholarships continue forever, Mr. and Mrs. Ertel moved the fund to the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania, creating the Taylor J. Ertel Scholarship Fund. Since the transfer, FCFP has granted $40,620 from the Fund. Mr. Ertel, U.S. Representative from the 17th Congressional District from 1976 to 1982, has served as counsel for a statewide child placement agency headquartered in Philadelphia. As such, he and Mrs. Ertel became aware that foster children seldom know the stability and sense of family that Taylor enjoyed. According to Mrs. Ertel, “Following state law, foster
children ‘age out’ at 18.” At that critical age they must fend for themselves with few opportunities for furthering their education. “Many of them never get a chance,” she says. The Ertels’ scholarship fund provides that chance. “Applicants don’t have to be outstanding scholars,” Mr. Ertel says. “They can be enrolled in any program of study—a college, technical school or vocational school. The scholarship is seed money to get them moving,” he says. For Patrick Fusaro, a senior enrolled in Temple University’s Sport and Recreation Management program, the Taylor J. Ertel Scholarship has brought new opportunities. “This scholarship has been so important to me. I can’t thank Mr. and Mrs. Ertel enough,” he says. In May, Mr. Fusaro will graduate, an event that he sees as “bittersweet. I will miss Temple, but I am eager to get out and start my career.”

Applying for ScholarshipsThe Community Foundation’s scholarship program is critical to our philanthropic mission. Educational scholarships from individuals, families and companies allow deserving students to continue their education by attending college or developing career skills, enriching their lives and the community as well. The Community Foundation administers scholarship funds that provide scholarships to over one hundred students each year. Each scholarship has specific criteria, and the Community Foundation honors donor intentions in making scholarship awards from these funds.
Award OpportunitiesThe Community Foundation recommends that graduating seniors work with their high school guidance counselor to find the best scholarship for you. Your high school guidance counselor has a list of all the scholarship opportunities and applications offered by the Community Foundation in your area. Scholarships for non-traditional students specific to an area of subject are also available.
