We are coming to the end of another busy year at Grande Prairie and Area Safe Communities/Safety City. Safe Communities provided farm safety education to 423 children during our 2018 spring school program season. Additionally, 383 children learned about pedestrian safety, and 321 children were taught about fire and emergency safety through programs offered to local area schools. This was our third year offering Safety City Summer Tuesday events. Emergencies Day was well attended with 150 participants taking part in activities presented by EMS, RCMP, City and County Enforcement Services, and City of Grande Prairie Fire Department . Some activities included street smarts trivia, ambulance, police car and fire truck tours, and escapes from the fire safety smoke simulation trailer. We also held two bicycle safety days, one pedestrian safety day, and one back to school safety day during our summer event season. The New & Young Driver program was delivered to grade 10 students from Beaverlodge Regional High School in September. Thanks to all of our partners and Constable Dean Solowan of the CN Police Service for help in delivering this program that addressed the dangers of distracted and impaired driving, as well as rail safety. Safety City Halloween was held on October 27. It was a great success with over 600 children and 400 adults in attendance. After trick or treating, learning about Halloween safety, craft making and a visit to the Mad Scientist’s Lab in Safety City; families enjoyed hot chocolate, music and dancing. It was a fantastic event and fun for all ages. Thank you to all of the sponsors and volunteers that made this event shine. The Board thanks it’s Acting Executive Director, Cindy Blinston, and Jamie Rude, Program Coordinator, for all of their hard work to make this year a success. A huge thank you to all of our volunteers, partners, and City and County Protective Services who have given many hours of their time to support our safety programs, initiatives and fundraising efforts. I look forward to working with our board and partners in 2019. Together, we can promote a culture of safety for Grande Prairie and area.
