PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD

Dear Members, On behalf of the Management Committee, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Panaga Club and the Kuala Belait Boat Club (KBBC). In 2015, we witnessed another eventful year: Internally, Panaga Club’s structure and operations are supported by strong individuals inside our team of Management Committee as well as the Club Staff who help bring order to our structure. The Management Committee helps revive Panaga Club through their proactive encouragement towards sections that have brought life to the Club. Their fun events, active sports, cultural activities and Professional Instructors are something to be acknowledged as some, if not all, had been brought to national attention. All these have been made possible through the support and backbone of the Club Staff who have dutifully cooperated and assisted towards the success of these sections. If not for this dynamic synergy, Panaga Club would not have been able to pull off such wonderful things that are worth celebrating for. We are now more structured, and have become more efficient, that we have been able to bring about a great momentum as we continue to serve our members with better service, efficiency and pride. Our external infrastructure underwent massive refurbishment as we constantly think about improvements and bring these ideas into life. Focus was given to the swimming pool, its changing rooms and both Clubs’ roofing. Catering has also been given more attention to as we now work more closely with our Caterers by giving them more attention and meeting with them regularly to hear about issues and how we go about to find solution to these problems. HSSE Health, Safety, Security and Environment are top priorities for all activities in the Club. Staffs, Pros and Management Committee do their best to ensure the health, safety and security of the premises and services for all members whilst also seeking ways to improve our environmental footprint. A total of 12 incidents and near-misses were reported during 2015, which is slightly down from the 19 reported in 2014 and significantly down from 23 in 2013. We need to keep an eye on the drop of reports and the Club’s management will continue to motivate a reporting culture. We had one incident relating to children, two adults, one related to missing items, one car accident, three incidents of trespassing at the golf course and four fire incidents. All incidents are logged, actions discussed and follow up is tracked in relevant management forum. The Club will continue to seek further ways to improve the safety and security of the premises, supported by BSP-HSE functions, the Panaga Health Centre and the Government emergency services (Bomba, Ambulance, and Police).

PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD (cont’d)

People In view of increasing efficiency and improving the value proposition to members and staff, the Club has extended and or renewed the duration of contracts with Club Pros and service providers and will continue to do so to maximize the benefit to the Club operations and services. We welcome our new Head of Maintenance, Safrin Kamis; Contracts and Procurement Coordinator, Shaeyna Khan; Secondary Dance Instructor, Fritz Dereje and Apprentice to Secondary Dance Instructor, Awangku Mohd Hanif. We would like to thank the following long-service staff who celebrated their 25 years emblem at Panaga Club in 2015 namely Dahlia Deli, Accounts Clerk; Haji Zaini Haji Tunggal, Golf Course Supervisor; Haji Azman Haji Mokti, Golf Course Administrator/Golf Starter and Maintenance Assistant, Raduan Matusin. Many thanks to Rob de Bree, who has evolved the Social Division, by making the Club ever so eventful and robust. We will miss his presence but will celebrate his legacy. He is now succeeded by Christina Sugila, whom we know will enjoy this role as much as Rob did. I would also like to welcome Chandrasekar Subramaniam and Ramana Rao who have taken up the roles of Food and Beverage Member and Sports Member. My special thanks go to the Accounts, Administration, Maintenance, Project and Housekeeping, and Golf Departments for their excellent performance for 2015. I look forward to working with all of you during 2016 to continue and maintain the Club at the highest standards in every respect!

PANAGA CLUB TREASURER’S REPORT 2015

OVERALL FINANCIAL RESULT 2015 In 2015 the club undertook and delivered a number of important rehabilitation and facility upgrades, funded predominantly from club funding with selected capital support from BSP. This included upgrades to air-conditioning, a significant upgrade to ageing pool pumps, the playground and some unexpected expenditure on vessel engines. Whilst financing such projects does impact on short term cash flow these projects will yield long term benefits to the club and its members. To ensure our ability to keep investing, the finance and procurement staff and committee members were involved in re-tendering the KBBC catering contract, a significant review of the golf contract and identifying cost reduction opportunities from managing light bulb inventories to changing the internet contract (and improving internet speeds in the club!). The Club ended the year with a Net Surplus of B$195,000, a decrease of 32% in comparison with the last year (2014). However our accumulated funds continued to rise and ended healthily at B$1.1 million for 2015. Section funds also grew modestly ending the year at a combined $861,000. In light of BSP funding constraints and a steady decline in our member base at the club, for 2016 we will be pursuing minimal run and maintain expenditure and very selective investment only. The combination of funding and revenue pressures will mean that we need to closely examine both cash inflows and outflows to maintain the club looking forward. BSP’s financial support for Panaga Club in 2015 is included in the Annual Report but doesn’t form part of the Club’s Book of Accounts.

FOOD & BEVERAGES (F&B) SECTION POSITION NAME

F&B Member Chandrasekar Subramaniam

The F&B Section for this year saw some great developments and progress over the months, Firstly a new F&B Representative MCM Member was appointed in the month of May 2015. By way of introduction Chandra Subramaniam is the new F&B MCM Member managing all the F&B related issues and concerns and improvements any in the club catering services. Feel free to write to your ideas for improvements if any to the above member who can be reached on [email protected] and on 871 8435. Moving on, the F&B Section had several rounds of discussions with the Caterers both Serikandi and Mauri looking for new ideas and improvements. The following are the updates: 1. Serikandi – The Club has taken some initiatives to remove the old walk-in freezer freeing up

some space for the caterer. The caterer has been spoken to keep the space and the rest of the areas clean and tidy as part of our ongoing requirements and certifications.

2. Mauri – As some of the members might have noticed that they have implemented the new

menu which offers different portion sizes and at different prices. We believe this option will be utilized by the members as they see it necessary and enjoy the new menu and the offerings by our Caterer.

3. Both Serikandi and Mauri catering areas have been audited by the BSP HSE Group over the

years and both have passed the requirements albeit with some improvements noted for each of them to implement. The Club management will follow-up on this regularly.

4. As members might have noted that we have a new KBBC Catering contract commencing the

1st November 2015 and we believe this will provide a variety and a menu apt for KBBC activities. We encourage the members to visit the new caterer and enjoy the offerings. The KBBC is being managed by KBBC Commodore Ms. Anna Coyajee - van Rietschoten who has done a great job of the selection process of the new caterer supported by our own Nisa Halim the Club Operations Manager. Any improvements or suggestions you may want to share with Anna for her consideration.

We take this opportunity to thank all those who helped us in the smooth running of the F&B Section and as always the best ideas and requirements come from the users of the facilities which in this case is you all the members. We welcome any suggestions or improvements you may want to see in this section which can be considered and implemented as appropriate.

Library Section Panaga Club Library serves its members through the lending of a wide range of children’s and adult’s fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs and audio books, in both English and Dutch. Highlights of the Year This year, yet again, the committee members have made a huge effort to improve the library and make it more attractive: * The old, torn and faded flooring has been replaced with new carpet.

* The marked walls have been repainted to compliment the repainting of the entrance hall.

* A directory of contacts for local artists has been created, and is being constantly updated, so that the library can have regular, fresh displays of artwork.

* The large, damaged settee in the children’s section has been replaced with a smaller, more modern one.

* New rugs have been purchased for both the English and Dutch children’s areas.

* A small table and chair set has been installed by the window so any members wishing to work from books etc can do so in comfort.

* A Training Guide for volunteers has been created to promote better understanding of Library procedures.

* The amount of training of volunteers has been increased dramatically.

* Refresher Volunteer Workshops have run periodically during the year.

* A rolling schedule for themes throughout the year has been agreed by the Committee so that events can be planned in advance to incorporate monthly themes.

* Library themes are being more actively promoted with new notices and props to attract attention.

* Job descriptions for Committee roles are nearly complete, with the revision of existing roles whenever a handover has taken place.

* To help members locate what they want, a map of where to find things is now prominently on display.

* A stock take of the Children’s 7-12 books has been taken. Damaged books and books which have not been taken out for 5 years or more have been removed from the system. Most of the books were donated to a school in Sungai Liang, whilst some were donated to Panaga School PTA to help raise money for the school.

* A rolling 2 year program of Stock Takes has been approved by the Committee to ensure that all sections have a regular ‘clear-out’ of old, damaged and out of date books.

* The library continues to support Duke of Edinburgh students by offering them the chance to complete the community service requirement of their award.

* The training and support of the volunteers has been developed with a new Training Guide which gives step-by-step instructions on ‘how to’.

Membership In January of 2015, the library had 330 members, and by December of 2015 the membership stood at 297 members. As our members subscribe as a family, not as individuals, this number reflects the number of families who currently have membership and not the number of actual members. The cost for a family subscription remains at five dollars per month. Circulation In 2015 the library has checked out 12,123 items to its members, the spread of which was:

* 54% English child

* 18% English Adult

* 14% DVD

* 12% Dutch child

* 1% Dutch adult

* 1% audio

17

Library Section (cont’d) Library Committee The library committee is made up entirely of volunteers. It has had a large turnover this year, with 10 of the 13 positions being replaced with new Committee members. Due to the commitment of the individual members of the Committee, most handovers have been achieved with full training and support. Each committee member is responsible for overseeing a section of the library. The current positions are:

* Administrator

* Chair

* Dutch Librarians x 2

* DVD Librarian

* English Librarians x 4

* Membership

* Rota and Training

* Secretary

* Treasurer Committee members invest a huge amount of their time in order to ensure that their section of the library, and the library as a whole, runs smoothly. In addition they attend monthly meetings to deal with issues arising from organising such a large membership and also to generate new ideas and projects. Library Volunteers The library is run entirely by volunteers, and it is thanks to the dedication of these people that the library is able to open six days a week for between one and four hours each day. Each new librarian receives an initial training session before being placed with an experienced volunteer in order to learn on the job. The Committee continues to try to develop its support for the large numbers of volunteers. This year a Training Guide has been created with a step-by-step set of instructions so volunteers need not struggle with issues they are not familiar with. We have also undertaken the training of volunteers on a more regular basis with smaller numbers involved, in order to promote confidence and ensure a better understanding of what is required. In addition Volunteer Workshops have taken place throughout the year to provide skills refreshers. Finally, in order to show appreciation of our volunteers, we held the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner in Kuala Belait in April, which was well attended and enjoyed. Future Goals and Challenges In the coming year the Library Committee hopes to; *Continue to recruit new volunteers so that we can provide an effective service for our members.

* Continue to rejuvenate the library and make it more attractive for our members. Key pointers will be the installation of some adult comfortable reading chairs and the replacement of some of the damaged shelving.

* Complete job descriptions so that handovers of roles are more streamlined.

* Introduce a Toddler Reading Scheme.

* Instigate the Stock Take Rota to ensure that the stock is in good condition and relevant to our members.

* Refurbish the Store Room to make it more viable as effective storage.

* The Library’s biggest single challenge is the lack of space. An extension appears, at the moment, to be infeasible, so we will continue to re-organisation shelving, books etc try to utilise the space as well as possible.

• February 2015 – Teraja Waterfalls field trip was attended by 6 members. The trek to the falls was somewhat slippery and challenging. Once at the falls we had two spots for taking photographs. Following instruction given by Dean some worthwhile shots were produced.

• April 2015 – Sunset shoot held at Kuala Belait breakwater was attended by 5 members.

• December 2015 – a Member Survey was conducted. 20 responses were received and were used by the PPS Committee to set the agenda for 2016 activities.

General Member Lisa Poore

Plans for the coming year In 2016, PPS aims to have a more structured approach. We will be holding a monthly discussion and organizing some field trips. For the monthly discussion, a topic will be selected and discussed; everyone will be encouraged to go out in their own time to take photos over the next 4 weeks. At the following month's discussion, time will be allocated for the group to review the past month's photos. Another topic will be discussed and that will be the focus for the next month's photo taking. "Practice makes perfect...or at least better... photos." An exhibition in the Library of PPS member’s photos is planned to take place in June. Collaboration with the Nature Society (PNHS) is also on the agenda either through a project or trip. Collaboration with Arts & Crafts sections has resulted in the A&C room being used by PPS for meetings. In terms of equipment, a dedicated monitor that can be used for photograph viewing at PPS meetings has been purchased.

Golf Captain Hj Roslie Hj Bakar

CAPTAIN’S REPORT I have pleasure in presenting the PGC’s Annual Report and Financial Statement for the 2015/2016 year. First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members a joyful, healthy, prosperous and happiest New Year 2016. A condolence to the family of late Ex PGC Captain Hj Nawawi Dato Hj Razali who have passed away recently this year. Remembering his numerous club contributions, his considerable time spent in competition, golfing and committee achievement, social participation and his personalities will bring a smile to his golfing friends for many years to come. He is sadly missed. My sincere thanks and gratitude to 2015 Committee Members and PGC staffs for their valued support, contribution and dedication throughout the year. Many thanks also extended to the Golf Course Maintenance Team lead by Haji Zaini with his maintenance crews who have done excellent works bringing back the greens back to its healthy condition and readiness for the PGC 50th Amateur Open Championship. I would also like to extend my thanks and gratitude to all PGC members who have supported and participated in all competition specifically the Monthly Medal competitions, friendly Inter-club, and this year PGC 50th Amateur Open Championship. Congratulation to all winners in these competitions. Another special thanks to all members, volunteers, reciprocal members and to those who has/have directly or indirectly contributed to all events organized by PGC and hope you will continue to provide the same supports and enthusiasm in 2016. I would like to express my thanks to our Professional, Paul for his continuing excellent service to Members and visitors and enthusiastic golfers and Junior programs through his work contract with PGC. As in previous years, 2015 was equally challenging year in many aspects for the Committee. I am glad to say that financially we are in better position than previous years due to a better financial control in our spending and up-front budget planning and allocation. As from 2016 with no funded from the Club, PGC events and businesses will be self-funding and hope that oil prices will improve in this very tight global economic situation. Key activity that we hope to take place and propose in 2016/2017 is the provision of golf cart utilization, new air compressor, more reciprocal club, hiring PGC golf course, removal of concrete fountain on Hole 9 & 18 Greens, New operator for golf shop which expired this August and the upgrade of irrigation system for the golf course. Some of these plans are able to execute as minor projects and others major scope need a strategy and further consideration to implement it. The current concern on our golf course is the adequacy of the sprinkler system especially in dry season. Our goal is to continue in improving/maintaining the playing condition of the golf course so that golf course will be playable and making the golf course beautification throughout the year. Any future upgrades / projects to the golf course need to be review and priorities as money will be a big challenge but will not be a stopper. We are grateful PGC golf course was/is still playable and available to members. The key highlight event was the 50th PGC Amateur Open Championship which was organized on 11th to 13 March 2016. PGC has made the commitment to deliver it before the 2016 AGM when it was cancelled in 2015. It was a great weekend, a very nice weather and a great atmosphere. The final day was exciting as we have a sudden-death playoff in the Men’s Open with full of drama to decide the winners. A very great memory to all the competitor, committee and volunteer as we see the young player challenging the senior player. PGC was not new to the playoff but we can’t recall when the last time was in the Men’s PGC Open. Congratulations to the 2016 Winners both represent Pantai Mentiri Golf Club, Pg Adam Pg Atan and Almas Syadzwanie Kamis. This was a major milestone and achievement in PGC history and Panaga Club as a whole to achieved the 50th Championship.

GOLF DIVISION (cont’d) Monthly Medal competitions were regularly held last year but PGC having a struggle to attract members as PGC had to cancelled them a couple of times. Overall there was still a good turn-out and support from members. We hope this will continue in 2016. One reciprocal golf game was played with Miri Golf Club in 2015, thanks to all members who have participated in these games and unfortunately we have lost the game in Miri although we have a strong field of good players. PGC will be the host for 2016 and hope we can take back the trophy. On HSE aspects, I would like to stress to all members, to ensure full compliance to Panaga Club Safety Rules and Regulations. Safety is everyone business and all members shall observed Club HSE rules and regulation specifically on lightning warning and smoking. Smoking is prohibited inside the Club premises. Several times last year on the golf course sighting of crocodile have been reported. I strongly advise for all golfers to be extra careful walking along the pond or trying to look back for the ball that goes to the pond. You are responsible for your own action and safety. Also public entering the golf course for fishing. Everybody has the roles to intervene whether you are Committee, Maintenance Contractor or as a PGC golf members. Make sure to intervene them as early as possible as we don’t want to have any injury incidents. This public trespassing has been brought up to Club Management for further action. Last but not the least, I would like again to thanks the outgoing Committee Members for their valued support and dedication, thanks to all members for their continuous supports throughout the year. I welcome any constructive comments for improvement and we look forward to work with all of you the coming years ahead. Best wishes and good golfing 2016.

Maintenance was also a priority during the year with the facility undergoing a new paint job, as well as repairs on areas that have undergone some wear over the years. We also acquired a new range of equipment to replace many of the machines which were ageing and required regular repairs. Some of these new machines include treadmills, stepper and strength training machines. The fitness centre manager also attended the Asia Fitness Convention which is an annual event that host speakers and presenters from all areas of health and fitness. For the New Year ahead the fitness centre hopes to provide members with access to healthy meals and nutritional plans through an online resource. Netball Section 2015 Committee:

POSITION NAME

Chairperson Katie Birkbeck

Secretary Abby Aubin

Treasurer Mel Cassini

The netball section holds weekly Tuesday evening training sessions in the Multi Purpose Hall. Committee members, Mel, Abby and regular player Heather plan, organise and run these training sessions working on fitness, training drills and game practice. The section also spends time looking at umpiring and discussing the rules of game. At times numbers attending are high but the club does experience patches of lower attendance. When numbers are above 10 the sessions are fun, energetic sessions, providing lots of match practice and game experience. With committed, regular section members attending training sessions we have been able to organise friendly matches with a local KB netball team. Our competitors are strong but this has been excellent experience playing as a team and a great learning opportunity as we observe their game strategy and coaching. We have also organised a social event for players in the section. So far, we have not been able to compete in a tournament this year but with the strong player base we now have this is something we hope to achieve in 2016. Annual Plan

- Purchase of scoreboard & timer.

- Look for head coach.

- Subsidised team shirts.

- New Committee Members.

- Contribution of ideas and direction from all section members.

- Provide a fun, relaxed atmosphere where players newer to netball can learn from more experienced players.

- Regular coverage of umpiring and netball rules and regulations.

- Continue to encourage new players.

- Training drills and game strategy.

- Participation in local tournament.

- Participation in local training sessions at Mumong.

- Semi regular friendly matches with local teams.

- Developing promotional material – logo, posters, and banner.

Two Year Plan

- Maintain strong member base.

- Continue to create a welcoming, fun section for new and experienced players.

- Regular friendly matches with local netball teams.

- Ongoing training for tournament participation.

- Maintaining/replacing equipment. - Provision of formal umpiring training.

Five Year Plan

- Gauge interest and organise training sessions for children.

- Investigate possibility of joining a local league for interested players.

- Access regular or semi regular fitness training from experienced trainer as part of evening sessions.

- Continue to organise weekly training sessions, for fun, social netball and fitness,

Tri Fit Section Chairman’s Report The Chairman, on behalf of the committee and members, would like to thank Corinna and Audrey for their contributions to Tri-Fit during 2015. They have given up a great deal of personal time to ensure Tri-Fit functions on a daily basis and making sure all our members get the best service possible. Also thanks go to all of our volunteer instructors Laura, Corinna, Ana Claudia, Yan (and myself) a huge thank you. The set up and administration of the Tri-Fit section Facebook page has been very successful, thanks to Julia for her social media prowess. Thank you to Christine for her work in preparing the Stock Inventory and keeping the equipment room manageable. Also thanks to the General committee members for their involvement and support throughout the year. We have had several highlights this year with the inclusion of Piloxing, Bootcamp, and Weight classes. Also Tri-Fit has offered Pilates Instructor Training for the members and the wider community. Tri-Fit are continuing to up skill its instructors and members by promoting a group training certificate in April 2016. I believe Tri-Fits’ main focus in 2015 was to provide a variety of fitness programmes that allowed all our members to enjoy, have fun and get fitter. This should continue to be our focus for 2016. Yoga Section The Yoga Section at Panaga Club continues to offer and improve its service to cater for the needs of its members and covers a wide range of styles from Hatha, Vinyasa and Flow. The main purpose for this division is to give a different kind of activity to fulfill the needs of Panaga Club members in terms of physical and mental enjoyment. The daily classes are currently run by volunteer teachers. We strive, as a section, to offer a variety of different yoga classes to all, and within those to cater for beginners through to advanced. Classes are taught almost every day and class times have been adapted to people’s needs as far as possible. The section currently has 100 members which is a clear statement of its popularity amongst members. The decrease from 130 last year is conform with the decrease in the Panaga Club Membership. We would also like to thank Nor Yap and her team in the Panaga Club office for their continuous support. Our activities/events in 2015 and projection for 2016 is summarized as follows: 2015 Events

KUALA BELAIT BOAT CLUB DIVISION (K.B.B.C.) KBBC Commodore’s Report for 2015

POSITION NAME

KBBC Commodore Anna Coyajee-van Rietschoten

Dear KBBC members, volunteers and watersport friends, here is the KBBC annual report for 2015. I am very proud to be the Commodore of the KB Boat Club for more than 3 years as together we have been able to generate so much watersport fun. Hereby like to thank our KBBC board members Mark Van De Velden, Nicole van Vugt, Tom Savels, Monique Reichwein and Evelien Klunder; our boatmen Zelani & Pg Aminnor and all the other active Panaga Club members who run all activities by contributing their (spare) time to the KBBC sections. Many employees and their spouses express appreciation of high value to perform meaningful (voluntary) activities during their stay in Brunei for and within the community.

We were able to continue to run our sections activities and run some community activities (Open day at KBBC and a Family fun day at the beach). We also continued with courses (Hobie beginners & powerboat courses) as well as our collaboration with Outpost (newcomers boatrides). In November we experienced the revival of an old tradition to sail to Miri Piasau Boat Club and back on a weekend. Great planning and support by our boatmen and enthusiastic sailors made it a memorable trip! We made it there and back!

Another big achievement of the year was the successful tender procedure to get a new caterer at KB Boat Club. After 34 years of collaboration with Foo Kim Seng Catering Services it was time for a change. In close collaboration with Panaga Club and the tender board SNS Catering was given the contract, which started 1 November. The new caterer has been well received by our members.

Anna Coyajee Commodore KBBC

HSE

In 2015, there has been one unfortunate encounter with a Stingray at the beach in shallow water. The member was hit by its tail in the lower leg. Appropriate care was given at Panaga Health center. The treatment consists of bathing the area (as soon as you can) in hot water (as hot as you can take) to breakdown the venom proteins. Stingrays are not frequently observed at Panaga and usually they are very shy and swim away. Members have been informed and information sheets at the beach shed have been updated. No other incidents have been reported. A new fuel tank has been placed early in the year, replacing the very old one, creating a safer and healthier in use fuel station. KBBC Clubhouse and Restaurant

From November 1 we said goodbye to Foo Kim Seng Catering Services, who served at KBBC for 34 years. SNS Catering took over the restaurant service. The KBBC Club house at the river has functioned as normal, with occasional small events like birthday parties and outpost new comers boat trips. There is no progress on the long-standing need to rejuvenate the waterfront and jetty, after it has been delayed by BSP engineering departments for several years. There are some additional preventive measures taken for safety. Signs for the public have put up not to board the jetty without life jacket. Furthermore the accesses to the jetty are fenced off with a chain and the floor above the fuel tank is painted with warning stripes to warn heavy vehicles.

KUALA BELAIT BOAT CLUB DIVISION (K.B.B.C.) (cont’d) KBBC Commodore’s Report for 2015 (cont’d) Boatmen

During 2015, our two boatmen continued to provide full time coverage at KBBC and Panaga Club at weekends with off days on Monday and Tuesday. The Hobie section, Power boat section, Fishing section and Dive section saw a continued activity level in the weekends. The boatmen split the tasks and managed time to accommodate each of the section’s requirements. However, with the increased workload, some events had to be cancelled as the boatmen can only be at one place at the time. During 2015, the boatmen continued to conduct half-day power boat training courses and acted as skipper for many powerboat outings and fishing trips. Power boat charters and offshore fishing trips continued its popularity with the boatmen working day and night to accommodate other KBBC sections (hobie etc). Request so far for a 3rd boatman hasn’t materialized. Dinghy Sailing Section (including Hobies, Lasers & children’s sailing)

The Hobie Section has run an annual racing competition on the first Saturday of each month from March-October 2015. The Hobie beginner’s course was held again with 11 participants. And ten members undertook an adventurous 2-day Hobie sailing trip to Miri and back in November, supported by Pg Aminnor on the Hammerhead and Zelani in a car. Parent & child sailing was started on Saturday mornings from Panaga beach on the Topaz and Optimists. This activity was targeted at experienced sailors with (young) children and older children with their (inexperienced) parents supporting logistics.

Disregarding the Miri trip and beginners course, 113 sails were made by 28 unique sailors (and their children). This is an increase from previous years (75 in 2014, 148 in 2013, 192 in 2012) which is largely attributed to the parent & child sailing.

Power Boat & Fishing Section

The Power Boat had a good year with 157 executed charters with Nemo and Croc, 14 charters with Naga laut and 42 fishing charters in 2015. Approximately the same number of charters as in 2014. It could have been higher if the HH would have been ready earlier, it became only available two months into the fishing season. Another 92 active members were added to the boating community, making a total of 197 active power boat users (some have left since). Charter update 2015

KUALA BELAIT BOAT CLUB DIVISION (K.B.B.C.) (cont’d) KBBC Commodore’s Report for 2015 (cont’d) To ensure safety on the water, KBBC continued to provide ½ day power boat courses. In total 9 courses were hosted by the boatmen training 92 people in 2014.

The powerboat and fishing section continues to Benefit from the web-based online booking system and in March 2016 the section achieved a milestone of 713 online bookings.

The HH (Hammerhead) leisure and fishing boat (30ft twin hull) was added to the KBBC boat fleet in February. After initially having the Suzuki 200hp 4str outboard engines installed, during the 2015 KBBC open day in May 2015, one of the outboards broke down. Unfortunately the outboard was not repairable and it was decided to buy two new outboard engines. The tender identified 250HP 4stroke Yamaha outboards to be the best value for money. In discussion with Panaga, two Yamaha 250HP outboard engines were acquired and installed in June 2015. The HH has had it’s 1yr service and maintenance and is back in the fleet. 2015 continued with a lot of rentals of the Croc as well as Nemo powerboats. Apart from normal maintenance and service both outboard engines (Suzuki 140DF lean burn 4str) are working well. Both Nemo and Croc continued to be covered with blue outdoor tarpaulin when not in use.

The Croc powerboat was fully overhauled in February 2015 after its last overhaul in 2009. The new type of interior turned out to be very robust, a stereo was installed, and the bottom part of the hull of the Croc power boat was also painted in anti fouling keeping the Croc nice and easy to clean when out of the water.

The Nemo powerboat needs to be fully overhauled in 2016, the boat is getting old, its interior is not nice and it needs to be painted.

The Naga Laut leisure vessel with two 200 str Yamaha’s is mostly used for birthday parties and trips on the river. The Naga Laut will need maintenance in 2016 (paint, fix tarpaulin, some minor structural work. At Hj Rashid in Tutong the same hull/boat as the Naga Laut is converted in an 15 seater, slow moving leisure boat, it is suggested to convert the Naga Laut in this type of boat as well.

Early 2015 saw the installation of a new RON97 fuel pump and cleaning of the 12Ton fuel tank was carried out. 3x 7000Ltr RON97 fuel loads have since been used. Currently approx. 3000Ltr left.

The MacDouglas sport fishing boat, two 90HP Honda engines and trailer was sold in June 2015 for 28K $BND to a Bruneian in Tutong.

Overall the Power boat and fishing section continued to be hugely popular in 2015 and is very appreciative of its support by KBBC management and Panaga Club. Although effort was required from the Power boat and Fishing section management, the boatmen have continued their efforts and commitment to the section.

Cruising/Yachting Section

During the first few months of 2015, the Makan Angin II was moored at the Royal Bruneian Yacht Club in Muara. This gave the members the opportunity to go sailing in and around the Brunei Bay. A few Sunday Sails have been organised to introduce (non-)experienced sailors to the Makan Angin II. In February the practical part of the IYT International Watchkeeper and Flotilla Skipper Course has been conducted offshore Muara.

After the monsoon season the Makan Angin II has been sailed back to Kuala Belait and was moored at KBBC for the remainder of the year. Also here a few Sunday Sails have been organised to introduce people to the Makan Angin II, but also to improve the sailing skills of members who had recently taken part in the IYT Yachting course with the help of an experienced skipper.

KUALA BELAIT BOAT CLUB DIVISION (K.B.B.C.) (cont’d) KBBC Commodore’s Report for 2015 (cont’d) Individual boat use by members was limited, since the majority of the current members still need some more experience to feel confident enough to take out the yacht as a skipper. In November a second IYT International Watchkeeper and Flotilla Skipper Course has started with a weekend full of skipper and sailing theory. The practical session will follow in 2016.

Finally, just before the Christmas holiday, a get together was organised for all members to talk about sailing destinations in and around Brunei and a calendar has been built with yachting activities for 2016. Unfortunately, Rob Cornelissen has stepped down to chase other interest. We have very much appreciated his help and efforts and we would like to thank him for his enthusiasm.

Diving Section

2015 was a good diving year, which began on 18th March and ended on 29th November. More training under the British Sub Aqua Club was conducted with a sports diver course, nitrox course, even an ocean diver course that was just completed as the monsoon began (2 new ocean divers). On the technical training an accelerated decompression procedures course, which also involved divers from Miri & Muara BSAC clubs, and a sports mixed gas course was held. From the insurance claim following the equipment room fire in 2014, the club restored equipment including new BCDs and regulators, renewed the nitrox blending system and the blending panel. The dive club committee has spent significant time just keeping the boat in good working order and improving the equipment room with new kit racks, cylinder chains & white boards.

There was a club technical trip to Truk Lagoon in Micronesia which brought together divers from the Omani (RAHSAC) / Miri (Piasau Divers) & Brunei (PSAC) clubs. Also panaga divers gave a presentation to the Panaga Nature Society on the underwater life in Brunei and South East Asia. Diving

The Naga Loncat ran very well throughout the year with over 30 dive trips and over 300 dives conducted, the peak diving month was August! The club welcomed 32 different divers. A few new reefs were discovered and have been named by the members including Gorgonian forest, Nemo reef and scorpion cove. The Pacific Boxer wreck was also rediscovered and we hope to dive this a little more in 2016. Members shared many of the photos from trips out to Chearnley shoals and from their further afield diving expeditions on the Facebook page. Panaga Divers Finances The club ended 2015 in a strong financial position. Income from diving and training was over 9000 BND and expenditure on fuel and boat maintenance was just over 5000 BND, leaving a club account balance of 11,900 BND. We looked at obtaining a trailer as a method of recovering the Naga Loncat, but there was little uptake & commitment from possible manufacturers, and instead we have identified ways to make boat recovery using a crane and trailer cheaper and easier. We expect to spend approx 4000 BND on boat maintenance before the season starts again in 2016, as well as restock on spares and supplies, while still leaving a strong contingency fund in case of major engine surprises.

Windsurfing Section

The Panaga Windsurfing Section (PWS) was during 2015 in a year of transition. PWS started the year with not one paid member and we are happy to say that we have now five paid members. It is our belief that more people will join if we increase the number of windsurfing and related activities.

KUALA BELAIT BOAT CLUB DIVISION (K.B.B.C.) (cont’d) KBBC Commodore’s Report for 2015 (cont’d) In June PWS conducted a windsurf course which will be continued on a yearly basis dependent on the applications. PWS has upgraded in 2015 their membership rules and received approval from the board. The fee has been increased from 60 B$ per year to 8B$ per month. This was necessary to reflect properly the related cost of maintenance and repair of the windsurfing equipment.

At the beginning of 2015 the PWS has repaired and took out of service some of the broken sails. Moreover some mast foots and extenders were purchased to enable rigging up different sails to different boards. PWS has changed the practice of having keys at the reception as we have experienced that also non-members were using the equipment without paying for it. Currently the members have a key of the lock, which will be renewed on a frequent basis to keep control of the key distribution in accordance with the paid membership list.

Kayak & SUP Section

The Kayak & SUP Section continues to benefit from the new equipment that was purchased in 2014. However, attrition in membership has taken place in the section. The Kayak Section reached a high of 64 active individuals and families in 2015, and has now dropped to below 40. In 2015 the annual fee structure was changed to a monthly subscription fee of $5/$3 to make accounting simpler. In 2015 the kayak section equipment was moved from the Windsurfing Section room and into its own smaller kayak space. The smaller space appropriately accommodates the Kayak Section and allows for a clear distinction between the Windsurf Section and the kayak section. The Kayak Section added a pull cart to make it easier to transport boards and kayaks to and from the sea. The Kayak Section also added 2 floats and 10 boogie boards that allow children to enjoy the section.

Rowing Section The Rowing Section has not been active in 2015. The plentiful presence of large crocodiles in Belait River prevents most people from venturing on the water in rowing boats.

Events and Marketing

The KBBC organized the following events in 2015:

KBBC Open family day at KBBC river location 14 March 2015 ~300 visitors, powerboat trips, dinghy

sailing, yacht visits.

KBBC Open family day at KBBC beach location 13 June 2015. ~400 visitors, powerboat trips, Hobie

sailing, Kayak/boarding, swimming, beach day out experience for the whole family.

Collaboration between Outpost and KBBC to give newcomer spouses a great experience at KB river.

Initiated in 2013, continues in 2014 and 2015, 2-4 times a year appr 12 persons per trip.

Finances

OPEX

It has been decided that, to be consistent with treatment of funding from Mauri and Serakandi, revenues from SNS will (continue to) flow to Panaga.

Panaga recognizes KBBC operations as a subset of the Panaga club and therefore accepts the continued need to support the KBBC operations so will provide this funding as part of normal Opex and not as a liability. Funding is estimated at BND 6k/year.

Page 35: ANNUAL REPORT 2015 - Panaga Club · Supervisor; Haji Azman Haji ... BSP’s financial support for Panaga Club in 2015 is included in the Annual Report but doesn’t form ... Name

34

KUALA BELAIT BOAT CLUB DIVISION (K.B.B.C.) (cont’d) KBBC Commodore’s Report for 2015 (cont’d) Outstanding Loans Regarding outstanding loans: it has been decided to retain the related liability in our ledger so we do not lose sight of the expense having been incurred. It is however recognized that KBBC and particularly boat club section do not have adequate funding to repay the liability. Panaga agrees there is no expectation that loans will be re-paid. CAPEX

It has been agreed that CAPEX spending estimates need to be established based on asset depreciation. We are currently in the process of establishing an inventory of all relevant assets used by KBBC as part of our day to day operations. Input to this comes from Adam Thorne (received) and Panaga Admin (not yet received - in progress). Also, the current pressure on wider Panaga budget and uncertainty of level of BSP funding means as of today the Business Plan for 2016 is not defined. A funding level is unknown so Panaga needs to review overall asset portfolio in Q1 and develop a strategy for assets / resources to move forward.

Committee Movements

The following people stepped down in 2015: Monique de Groot-Reichwein (marketing & events), Rob Cornelissen (Yachting), Tjerk Joustra (Hobie materials), Brady Wild (fishing), Anne Maundrell (wind surfing), Aryo Dewanto (treasurer). I would like to personally thank all the past Committee Members for giving their time so freely.

The MSP income comes from two main sources: the commission (7.5% on Music society and 10% on Rhythmic arts) which is charged on outsourced lesson fees and the margin from in-house teacher’s lesson fees. In 2015, the committee is able to invest part of the funds in music instruments (Boomwhackers, handbell set & handbell carrying cases, Octavator Tube Caps) and Sofa set in music waiting room, 1 unit Acer Laptop for music teacher (replacement of old broken laptop). As for 2016 and next 5 year’s section development plan, we are working on building up funds for the replacement of Grand Piano and music room renovation. The current Grand Piano is our most valuable asset and was purchased in 1979 at a cost of $18,350. The replacement cost is estimated to be in the region of $25-30,000. Meanwhile, MSP will investigate the repair cost for current grand piano before MSP replace the current piano. Music room Renovation aims at replacing wall paper with paint and building soundproofed walls to enable us to provide drum lesson, and providing better & healthy learning environment.

3. Music lessons report Currently MSP has total 161 music students. 6 students registered in the waiting list. The Amateur Dramatics Society (T.A.D.S.) 2015 was a quiet year for TADS which saw a significant number of key society members leave Brunei. Initial planning for a Pantomime in December was dashed when the director also left Brunei at short notice. As such the only sustained activity for the section was the wardrobe department which continues to provide a valuable service by providing costumes for various events across the Panaga community. Looking forward, TADS is looking forward to rejuvenating the amateur dramatics at Panaga by performing a pantomime in December 2016 having successfully identifying a direct and technical team to produce the production.

Bridge Section Chairman’s Report New Players:

This year has seen a continuation of trying to engage with players to play on a regular basis. The main increase in players has been from new people moving to Brunei as well as the lessons we

offered from September to November 2015. We had 13 for this and initially we had 12 who continued to play after the lessons but this has now decreased to 8.

As a club we are now offering play three times a week. It has been important to try and change the idea of “only good players can play on a Wednesday evening”. The club’s reputation was that of stuffiness. We have successfully moved away from this.

Our distribution list has a good number but many continue to be passive.

Social Bridge:

We have also introduced monthly social bridge evenings. These have proved to be very successful. We also have social evenings for people leaving. Our Christmas social evening was very successful, with more than four tables playing.

Tournaments:

Leagues have tried to be introduced but are on hold for the meantime. We did not participate in Shell World Wide Inter club bridge has been discussed but is currently on hold.

Communication:

This year we have introduced What’s App groups as well as email distribution lists. This has been a successful means of communication.

In addition we use the Panaga newsletter, posters and the Panaga website to communicate. Our distribution list is sent monthly emails after committee meetings.

2016:

The future of the club, at the moment, is no longer at risk. Continue to ask the players what they want from the club and try to facilitate this as far as possible. New courses are planned. The AGM will discuss the way forward.

The Brits had another strong year with over 500 people on the mailing list and an active facebook site. There was a change in committee in the middle of the year as we bid farewell and bon voyage to husband and wife team, Chairman, Luke Kendall, and Secretary, Marlou Bergboer. 2015 Committee:

2015 EVENTS

17th January: Welcome back BBQ Kindly hosted by Katy Docherty & Luke Mason, there was a bouncy castle & BBQ and much fun was had by all. 8th March: Kids Playback Another success with 12 Acts formed from Panaga’s youth taking to the stage to sing and dance. Each team was deserving of a special star and much fun was had by all. 10th April: St George’s Day Party For the first time Brunei Brits hosted a St George’s day to celebrate all things English! This was a ticketed event held on camp. The costumes were brilliant- from Knights to English country gentlemen to chimney sweeps- even convicts from Australia joined the party! The band (Will Ayam) was fantastic and people danced the night away whilst the Pimms flowed. A stiflingly good event and much fun was had by all. 18th April: 24th Panaga Highland Games Despite a strong showing in track and field events, it was not the Brits’ finest year in the Highland Games. That said, as always, all participants had a great day and much fun was had by all. Thanks to Luke Mason for getting all the teams together! 15th June: Progressive Dinner Another Brits’ specialty, the concept progressing from house to house for a full meal – with a different location for starter, main and dessert. The people of Panaga seemingly preferred a liquid dinner, with many registrations for starters or “no cooking” but excellent organisation by Linda, Liz and Elizabeth meant everyone went home well-fed and watered and much fun was had by all. 24th October: Panaga Games After the Brit’s 2014 victory, we were (again, akin to Ireland in the Eurovision song contest) tasked with organising this popular Panaga event. With Luke Mason as overall co-ordinator along with Rob de Bree, the Brit had Gemma Hunt (softball), Fiona Ward (volleyball), Matt Hunt (swimming), Bellinder McKellar (badminton) and Neil lynch (dodge ball) organising their respective sports and players - a huge thank you to all those who organised and participated. Everyone who took part had a great time and put in a huge amount of effort. It was lovely to see both adults and children participating and representing the mighty Brunei Brits! One favourite memory of the day was the dodge ball, the kids where FANTASTIC! A big shout out to our swimmers, volleyball and kids dodgeball who took Golds. We finished FIRST overall, winning a big trophy, the joys of organising next year’s competition, and, of course, much fun was had by all.

Brunei Brits Club (B.B.C.) (cont’d) 7th November: Playback: The Brits finished their events calendar on a high with the ever-popular Playback Show. Following on from last year’s change in voting, 8 acts graced the stage from the Dutch, Indian and Russian communities, along with mixed nationality groups of teachers, cyclists and ballet dancers amongst other. The Nigerian community passed on their 2014 winners’ trophy to the Indian community, who closed the show with a bang. Thanks to all the organisers and participants for what was described “the best Playback show ever” – however, most importantly, much fun was had by all.

Dutch Community Section Secretary’s Report The Secretary informed those present that there are currently 96 families member of the Dutch Committee compared to 97 last year. The committee and subcommittees were discussed as well as their succession and thanked on behalf of all members for their time and effort in 2015. The Secretary provided a review of the organised events of the past year and thanked all who contributed to making these events a success. Participation of many volunteers is essential to be able to sustain the level of activities in 2016. Activities during 2014-2015 The events of 2015 included 3 visits by Dutch artists, as well as the other traditional events: Dutch Night, Kinderfeest (international events), Oranjeborrel, Vrijmarkt, Sinterklaas, St. Maarten celebration and evening marches in May. In 2015 the Dutch committee was able to offer Dutch swimming lessons for the children. 13 children succeeded to get their A-diploma, 12 to get their B-diploma and 21 their C-diploma. Carnaval was not held this year due to holiday planning. A detailed activity list is provided at the end of this report. There were no other new activities proposed by the members for 2016; because the agenda is quite full the organisation of new activities is not required. Treasurer’s Report The Treasurer discussed the financial report for 2015 and the proposed budget for 2016. Both financial report and budget proposal were reviewed and agreed upon by the members present. Several additional decisions were made:

The Dutch Committee did not request for Panaga Club funding due to a balanced budget for 2015. For the 2016 budget a deduction of the sponsorship by Shell has been taken into account. The

budgets for the various subcommittees/activities have been made in line with the actual expenses of the previous years. As a result, most event budgets are decreased.

Committee Members The Chairman and 1 Materials/Yearbook person have resigned in September 2015.

2015 2016 Chairman: Wibo Schepel → Machiel Hulsbergen

(from September 2015) Treasurer: Rob Cornelissen → Rob Cornelissen Secretary: Rianne van de Merwe → Rianne van de Merwe Materials: Sander Suk /Rob de Bree → Sander Suk Events: Rob de Bree / Sander Suk → Linda Visser Yearbook: Rob de Bree / Sander Suk → Sander Suk

The Chairman thanked the members of the 2015 committee. There were no further questions. The new committee members were elected unopposed and were subsequently installed by the Chairman.

Jungle Tots Section (cont’d) Jungle Tots Parties In 2015 we organized an Easter, Summer, Halloween and Christmas party following a well and established concept. A coordinator is nominated and a task list is sent out to the committee members at least 8 to 6 weeks before each party. Party preparations such as inventory of props, ordering the right type and amount of food, booking the bouncing castle in advance, hand-made decorations by children during the Thursday Arts & Crafts session and volunteers were all keys in making these parties a huge success. This year we spent a total of $2884.20 on party expenses. Christmas is the most expensive as it includes a book from Santa for each of the children attending. Summer Survival During the summer holidays a schedule of activities for example beach games, fire station visit, magic show, reptile show, bouncy castle, decorating cookies was organized. These activities were organized by the Jungle Tots members to provide continuity for the children and make the summer holidays a little bit more exciting! Summer Survival replaces the normal Jungle Tots activity schedule, which was cancelled during the Panaga school holidays. Rules were: To be part of ‘Summer Survival’ you kindly need to volunteer to host one of the activities As host: Organize any resources you need and provide a light snack and drink for the kids on the day of

the activity Activities will usually be held at 9:30-11:00 am or 3:30-5:00 pm All Summer Survival activities were strictly for Jungle Tots members only and parents were reminded to use age discretion when choosing to bring older siblings. Children have to be accompanied by a responsible adult and parents were also requested to kindly follow the Panaga Club guidelines regarding Amah’s. It’s fair to say that Summer Survival 2015 was a huge success with activities running at full capacity for 7 weeks from the 15th July to 28th August. Bike Safety session On Saturday 26th September Mr Matthew from Panaga School kindly agreed to run a bike safety session for the children of Jungle Tots. The session was targeted to children who are independent riders (bikes/scooters/trikes) with or without stabilisers. He did a short presentation and they then went out to check their bikes and helmets before heading out to the playground to demonstrate the safety skills they had learned. Snack and drink was provided for the children. It was a great success and definitely something we hope to do again. Yard Sale This event took place on Saturday 21st November. 9 tables were offered for a fee of $5 per table giving members the opportunity to sell old toys and clothes. The turnout was good and a nice event for our members to mingle. Toy Inventory & Cleaning Inventory An inventory was done in March 2015. This included sorting through all boxes, reorganising all toys in logical categories as well as determining toys for disposal.

Jungle Tots Section (cont’d) Cleaning Toy cleaning was done in Feb 2015 and Sept 2015. The cost was $380 each time. This includes:

- Toy Cupboard; taking all toys out of the boxes and cleaning individually with antibacterial spray and clean disposable cloth

- Let’s Pretend room; cleaning of shelves in the cupboards. - Outside store room; table & chairs

Communication to Members Information is commuted to Jungle Tots members by email, newsletter, Jungle Tots information board outside the Jungle House and Jungle Tots Facebook page. The Facebook page is a closed group for Jungle Tots members only. While emails are still vital as the main communication tool, the Facebook page is very handy for session leaders to inform members about changes to a session under short notice. Maintenance & Improvement of Jungle House In May 2015 the air conditioning units in the Toy cupboard and Let’s Pretend were not working/leaking. This was reported to Club maintenance. By October 2015 the units had not been fixed and a further 2 air conditioning units in the main room in the Jungle House were not working. It was reported again to Club maintenance. December 2015 all air conditioning units in the Jungle House were changed. In July 2015 the shade over the castle in the Jungle House playground fell down after heavy rain. This was fixed by the company Boon Seng who had installed it October 2014. It fell down again in November 2015. It was reported to the Club maintenance who got it fixed. In November 2015 the lock on the double gate into the Jungle House playground was broken. It was reported to Club maintenance who fixed it. In January 2016 after heavy rain the roof above the veranda at the front of the Jungle House was leaking onto the wooden floor. On further inspection it was noticed that there was a tin panel missing from the roof. This was reported to Club maintenance. Equipment Hire Jungle Tots currently have 13 Tables & 76 Chairs which are available for hire. Charges are $25 per hire for Jungle Tots members and $33 for non Jungle Tots members. Payment is by chit. Hire forms can be obtained at the club office. Forms must be submitted at least 2 weeks before the actual hire for requests to be approved. New Purchases The main items of expenditure were toys, equipment and parties. Toys and equipment included new baby toys, foam mats, new cars for Jungle House playground and various materials for wet & wild, messy play and art & crafts. The parties comprised: Easter, Summer, Halloween and Christmas.

Committee discussion and analysis The weekly schedule seems to fill the general demand for parent/children activities. The 4 yearly parties are always a success and enjoyed by many members. The Bike Safety session and Yard Sale were both a success and something we hope to do again in 2016. With all the other activities offered by the Panaga Club and social commitments people seem to be fulfilled. I would like say a big Thank You to all volunteers for their time and dedication. Without them none of these wonderful activities would be possible and we hope that more parents will step forward in 2016 so that Jungle Tots can continue to provide a warm, stimulating & fun environment for our children. Santa’s Grotto Section

Santa’s Grotto is a social section that has an event once a year for the children at Christmas. 2015 was a good year for Santa’s Grotto. We had a strong committee with very few changes, we welcomed a new treasurer and lots of new helpers to make our event the best it has ever been. This year we pushed our numbers up to 250 children to see Santa and 50 as general tickets.. so a total of 300, which is up by 50 from the previous year. We didn’t quite sell as many tickets as we wanted (230 were sold to see Santa and 20 general). This was due to the huge numbers of families that left Panaga before our event. This coming year we plan to work a bit with the school so we know how many children are coming and going so we can ensure we have the right amount of tickets. We also plan not to have the general ticketing like the previous year. Tickets were $25 to see Santa and $15 for general. Approximately half of the ticket cost (to see Santa) covers the gift and the rest covers the entertainment and arts and craft. We had 3 Santa’s help us out this year over the 3 1.5 hour long sessions and we had around 100 volunteers help out with the day, whether that be helping to set up and pack away, wrap and sort decorations, wrap presents, people donating items for the day, plus all our wonderful volunteers that were able to help on the day with the children. The Garrison kindly donated 4 of their tents for us to use also some fans, lighting and tables. We had 3 sessions this year to try and cater for the numbers of children, which worked out well. A morning session followed by 2 afternoon sessions. Each session had approximately 100 children attend. Each session was also broken down into 4 smaller sessions to see Santa, with 25 children in each session. Santa handed each child a gift and one of our helpers snapped a couple of photos for the parents. The children were well entertained with a fire breathing magician, letter writing, face painting, tattoos, some merchandise, story reading and wonderful Christmas arts and crafts. The combination of the Panaga choir and the military wives choir also made our event feel very festive. The Norse community helped out with their wonderful addition of waffels, leaving 49 smelling like mums kitchen in the lead up to Christmas. Planning for 2016 has already begun. December 4th is this year’s big day! Our committee hasn’t changed which is great. This year we are going to drop our numbers (but will know later in the year how many we will be catering for) but the ticket price is going to stay the same. We are probably going to look at doing 2 2hour long sessions this year. Our next meeting is in a couple of weeks to get going underway properly before the summer holidays.

Scottish Community Section Chairman’s Report Summary Another successful year for Kuala Belait Scottish Community organising key events open to all members of Panaga and the main event, the Panaga Highland Games, which is open to all in Brunei. This is the cornerstone of the Society and we look forward to another well organised and well attended event for our Silver Jubilee, 25th year in 2016. As well as organising our own events, the KBSC continues to distribute news to the whole community via its mailing list, and is inclusive of all communities within Panaga. All events were well planned and, where circumstances were within our control, were well run and well attended. Thanks to the Committee and the other volunteers who, with invaluable participation from all committee members, make sure that these events are executed to a very high standard. 2015 Events The Panaga Highland Games The Panaga Highland Games had to be brought forward from its June slot to April for 2015, in compliance with blackout period regulations. As usual the event was held over two days with the 5k run on Friday 17th April and a full day on 18th April at the Panaga Padang. This showcase annual event brought together multiple groups from within the BSJVs & the local community to:

1. Participate in adult & children’s sporting activities. 2. Share in Scottish cultural experiences. 3. Promote local businesses & charities in the community. 4. Promote local community relations within BSJVs.

Congratulations to the 2015 winners: Ladies – Clan Kiwi; Men – Pan Bright Travellers; Overall – Pan Bright Travellers One of the biggest sporting events in the country, this event is open to all residents of Brunei with no fee for spectators (c.3000). Competitors come from all regions of the Sultanate, from both within and outside Panaga. 2015 saw 11 teams and 100+ individuals participate in the Games. Congratulations to all who participated. Additionally, there was a separate children’s event with over 100 participants. We had the Panaga resident’s Casual Ceilidh Band playing Scottish Music throughout the day as well as a Scottish Country Dancing display from the Panaga School children. This is a massive event and requires coordination within BSP, Panaga Club and the Garrison together with outside parties and various nationwide vendors. As such, it relies on a band of dedicated volunteers who put in months of preparation and planning to make it the successful event that it is. Casual Ceilidhs We continued to host small ceilidhs in 2015 where the people of Panaga can enjoy Scottish music and traditional Scottish dancing. This serves as great practice for the bigger events of Burns Night and St. Andrew’s.

Scottish Community Section (cont’d) St Andrews Night Planned for 21st November 2015 at the Grand Ballroom, Miri Marriott, the event had to unfortunately be cancelled at the eleventh hour even though the preparations were comprehensive. The Marriott is undergoing renovations and could not provide enough rooms for our guests who normally take their children along and make a weekend of it. We hope to find a better venue for 2016. Burns Supper Held on Friday 22nd January 2016, this was our first event in conjunction with the Garrison on their grounds. 124 people attended the evening to celebrate the life and works of Scotland’s National Poet. It was a traditional format of speeches and poetry and the evening was finished off with a ceilidh: lots of Scottish Country dancing. Scottish Sausage Sizzles Held throughout the year these are relaxed informal gatherings and act as a great family event and an opportunity to welcome new members to the community. Committee Committee stand downs: Iain Archibald left Brunei in December 2015. Lynne Haddow took over the Chairperson role on Iain’s departure. Athletics (PANAS) Section

Panas is an informal running club. We meet twice a week on Monday and Friday evenings (1745 @ the beach shelter) to run around Panaga. Once a month we organise a race (called the TT though we don’t remember whether TT stands for time trial or tourist trophy) which is in or near Panaga. In 2015 we had 67 entrants over the year with age ranges from 7 to 60+ and we run a points-based championship every 6 months and give awards for best improver. Once a year we organise a half marathon in Panaga, last year raising $500 which we passed to the Royal Gurkha Rifles to help with relief of the earthquake in Nepal. We also share members’ running activities – there has been a big rise in the poularity of trail running in the last couple of years and there are many opportunities in and around Brunei: Labi road, Bukit Shahbandar, Lambir Hills, KK etc offer really unique trails which can make sense of hours plodding around Panaga! We also share money and effort with the Panaga Triathlon which runs two sprint and super sprint distance triathlons which have high numbers of competitors. If you would like to join our mailing list please contact us at [email protected] Upcoming events: Panas 2016 Half Marathon and 10km – 22nd April – seach for panas panaga on facebook Panaga Triathlon – 15th May – search for panaga triathlon on facebook AGM minutes

Hockey Section 1. HSE

Main HSE points of attention for 2015 include: There were no reported HSE incidents in 2015. Both one adult hockey and kids hockey training was cancelled due to pitch being too wet during the

very heavy monsoon season. 2. Finances

The Hockey Section has raised its balance over 2015 to BND 18469.09 an increase of about BND 2250. We have about met our budgeted expenditures in 2015; on shirts for Adult Hockey Players for tournament in Bandar, shirts for Kids Hockey Players, a year-end Farewell Event, and some materials (balls, cones, …). For 2016 the intention is to invest in new wheels and nets for our goals and for the floor hockey section to invest in materials.

3. Adult Hockey

In 2015, the Panaga Adult hockey section met most of Tuesday night for casual training with 6 – 8 players on a regular basis. The adult section has been much in flux throughout 2015 with many members leaving but also quite a number of new members joining. Towards the end of 2015 we have managed to grow our pool of regular hockey players to 10 – 12 which means we now regularly have 8 players or more playing. Unfortunately we have not been able to recruit any women players. With a couple players from JIS we participated in a tournament in the National Stadium in Bandar in November.

4. Kids Hockey

Kids hockey is remains the most striving branch of the hockey section with over 60 – 80 kids playing every Thursday evening. Securing coaches for Kids Hockey has been a challenge throughout 2015 due to people leaving Brunei and coaches’ children no longer playing hockey. We have enjoyed a great year-end farewell event and handed out new Panaga Kids Hockey shirts to all kids players.

5. Floor Hockey

The Panaga Floor Hockey Section has suffered from the fact that quite a number of people from the Norwegian community have left Panaga over the course of the year. Typical attendance at Thursday night games now is 4 – 6 players. This year some new purchases (sticks and balls predominantly) were made.

Lawn Bowls Section Lawn Bowls Section 2015-16 Executive Summary Lawn Bowls at Panaga as it is a game for all age groups and sporting abilities. The Lawn Bowls Section is grateful for the many years of care and upkeep the greens have received, providing a great afternoon out by the South China Sea. The facility has been part of the Panaga Club for many years and has a proud history in the club. The Panaga Bowls Section have been proud of to be in correspondence and have had roll ups with the Brunei National Secretary, BJ Chuchu. We are honoured to have been asked by Mr Chuchu to provide for his national teams experience of the slow running greens Panaga has as they are similar to many greens they compete on in China. We are keen to encourage more members and have made significant moves to have the surface, fixtures and fittings kept in a fit state. The Panaga Club have responded positively and we hope the repairs and regular cleaning schedule will help attract new members. We will hold a social event in the coming months with the intention of expanding membership and have had discussions with other sports society board members. Rugby Section Chairperson’s Report The past year has been one of growth for the Panaga rugby section. We have had significant new numbers of children, especially in the mini’s section, and new coaches. The adult touch continues to be a success and Cathy will provide her report on this shortly. All children’s groups being, Mini’s (3-5yrs), Crocs (5-7 yrs), Early Tacklers (7-9yrs), and Juniors (9-13yrs) are flourishing with parents, children and coaches a like enjoying Friday rugby. We have advertised on BFBS radio and maintained our strong relationship with British Army with many of the children and coaches British Army. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rose Dekker (Treasurer), and Elton Hadfield (Secretary) for their dedication to the Rugby Section. It is a pleasure to work with you both for such a great section. A great deal of thanks needs to be expressed for the hard work of the all the Coaches and volunteers over the past year, whether coaching, running the merchandise, helping set up each week, I thank you, without you we would not be able to have a successful rugby section. I am particularly delighted to see the girls progressing through the age groups with nearly half of the early tacklers being girls. The Rugby section in 2015 has been able to support coaches and volunteers to upskill. Elton and Luke Mason did the Level 1 & 2 IRB Coaching course in November each course over 2 days in Bandar. Elton and Cathy did the Emergency First Responder First aid course in October (1 full day), and a number of us coaches attended the Child safe course with Niall's wife earlier in the year. Angus Munro Adult Touch Rugby The participation of rugby section members has increased in Adult touch during 2015. There was a decrease in individual subscriptions, but there are now more parents of children in the Rugby Section taking advantage of the ‘Family Subscription’ and more coaches also attending either on a permanent or casual basis. The female members of The Touch Section under ‘KB Scorpions’, competed at several competitions throughout the year and hosted various teams for friendly matches. I also ran the National Women’s Touch League, for the second year and our team hosted several matches during the league at Panaga Club field on Monday evenings. We came second in that competition for the second year running. The Finals were unable to be held at Panaga Club as initially planned, due to a timetabling clash with the Panaga Triathlon. The NWTL also a wonderful opportunity to facilitate training for Bruneian coaches and referees country, as we held three Touch referee’s courses and one coaches course during 2015. Cathy Hadfield

Stingrays Swim Section As of February 2016, Stingrays had 266 members in group lessons. This is a significant drop from around 370 members, this time last year. Many of these, though not all, can be attributed to the large number of families that have left Brunei over the last year. There has been a some concerns for a couple of years that some of the class sizes were getting too large and that the difference in abilities in the earlier stages of swimming was also too big. This may also have contributed to declining numbers. From the end of 2014 to now, we have been making steps to change this. Our initial swimming stage, Blues was previously described as - Introduction to water through to swimming one length. However, over the years changes to the scheduling of classes and to the community have meant that at times children at both ends of this spectrum were in the same group. To address this, Blues was divided into 3 groups:-

Turtles - Introduction to Water - helping children to relax in the water, being able to put their face in, have a good body position and start learning basic stroke techniques for freestyle and backstroke with support.

Blues - Developing techniques for freestyle, including side breathing and backstroke over short distances 10-15m, independently.

Snappers - Using these techniques and extending the distance to a lap - 30 meters.

This change, not only improved the balance of the groups, but also helped to reduce class sizes in these groups to 6 at each level. In 2016, we are looking to reduce this further for the Turtles groups. Stingrays Events In 2015, we successfully held a Club Championships with 57 swimmers and two Aquathons in May and November, with 54 and 55 participants respectively. In the May Aquathon, the youngest age category was 6-8 years old, however many of the 6 year olds left the event disheartened and discouraged, as they were unable to achieve top placings against 8 year olds. For the November event, we changed this to individual categories for 6 year olds, 7 year olds and 8 year olds, as we felt that we needed to be encouraging our younger swimmers to participate in swimming events. This encouragement will become even more important later this year, as we will be losing many of our Competition Squad and Whips swimmers, when they move to JIS for their secondary education. Events Outside of Panaga Stingrays is predominantly ‘Learn to Swim’ Club, that combined with the transient nature of our community and that we lose most of 11/12 year old and older swimmers to boarding schools means that we have a smaller number of swimmers to draw on for competitions. There are 8 swimming events held locally, 6 in Brunei and 2 in Miri. In 2014, the Competition Squad was quite small and attendance at competitions very low. Despite the challenges, in 2015 the Competition Squad was increased to 16 swimmers and attendance and performance at the local competitions was significantly improved. This year, we had between 11 and 22 swimmers at each event, with many achieving Personal Best times and swimmers winning medals. See charts below. Stingrays hope to build on this success in 2016 and will work to encourage younger members to participate in these events.
