Dear friends, E

very day at Living Beyond Breast Cancer our staff works toward improving the lives of those with breast cancer. A person’s life — and the lives of their loved ones — can be turned upside down by a breast cancer diagnosis. It’s for this reason our mission is to connect people with trusted breast cancer information and a community of support, and why that mission is so critical. I am happy to report that in 2015 we continued to grow our programs and services, reaching nearly 550,000 people. We wouldn’t be able to provide these programs and services without the generosity of our donors and volunteers. Thank you for your commitment to the work that we do. Without you, 2015 would not have been so successful. In the pages ahead we share highlights of LBBC’s accomplishments and testimonials from women whose lives you’ve touched. While we are proud and humbled by these, our work does not end. As we prepare to celebrate our 25th anniversary, we invite you to grow with us so that even more people and their loved ones can find support with Living Beyond Breast Cancer. Volunteer with us, attend our events, connect with us through social media and share our mission with someone you know who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. On behalf of the staff and board of directors, a special thank you to those who have been with us since the beginning and to those connecting with us for the first time.

Warmly,

Jean A. Sachs, MSS, MLSP Chief Executive Officer

lBBC.orG We launched a redesigned, reimagined and mobile-friendly website with hundreds of new pages of up-to-date and medically accurate content and simplified navigation.

Healthcare professionals review all of the educational information found on LBBC.ORG so that readers can be confident in its accuracy. The redesign allowed us to organize content by diagnosis type and stage of treatment, making the information each individual needs easier to find. In addition, the website employs “smart” technology that suggests content based on users’ interests.

When I was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer I immediately went online to learn more about the disease. Nearly every website I visited had out-of-date information with dreadful statistics. I luckily found Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s website and became an informed patient ready to advocate for myself. – Christina M.

SoCial Media W e ramped up our social media activity to bring

awareness to LBBC and to spark conversations about topics that are important to those affected by breast cancer, like treatment decisions, side effects and emotions.

Online is also an important place for people to connect, and in 2015 close to 75,000 of LBBC’s social media followers were able to support and learn from each other.

Beyond the Breast During a 24-hour period on September 21, our Beyond the Breast Campaign reached over 2,000,000 social media accounts with 1,000 people using the #beyondthebreast hashtag in their posts. The campaign was designed to educate the public about metastatic breast cancer—what it is and how it affects those living with it. We used statistics, personal stories and photos submitted by women highlighting where in their bodies breast cancer spread.

We set a record for LBBC blog readership that day, with 2,180 views in a 24-hour period.

We held five Twitter chats Now What? Making Treatment Decisions After Diagnosis

Imaging During Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Treatment and Follow-Up

Breast Reconstruction Options, Results and You

Tweets From the Sheets: Sex & Intimacy After a Diagnosis of Breast Cancer

Talking Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

These chats allowed people to exchange questions and insights in realtime with other diagnosed women and medical professionals.

BreaSt CanCer Helpline

In 2015, we received close to 1,000 Helpline calls from people who needed to speak to someone who “gets it.” Also faced with a breast cancer diagnosis, our volunteers help women talk through the issues they face and recommend resources.

LBBC believes in meeting each person where they want to be met. To help expand our reach, we also launched the Helpline’s online chat feature for people who seek support virtually. We trained 34 new Helpline volunteers on this new technology, and now have 128 women across the country available to support people of different ages, stages and diagnosis types.

LBBC’s Breast Cancer Helpline was created in 1996 and will mark its 20th anniversary in 2016.

Hear My VoiCe We developed the Hear My Voice: Metastatic Breast

Cancer Outreach Program to help reach those diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, who have unique medical, emotional and practical needs. Hear My Voice volunteers, all stage IV themselves, are trained to educate people in their communities about metastatic breast cancer through speaking appearances, media outreach, sitting on research panels, blogs and making individual connections to others living with metastatic breast cancer.

We trained the first class of 31 Hear My Voice outreach volunteers in April 2015, and they have already organized more than 82 events across 18 states. We look forward to continuing to grow this program, and recently trained the second class of volunteers at Thriving Together: The 10th Annual Conference for Metastatic Breast Cancer in April 2016.

For me, volunteering on the Helpline means giving callers a safe and supportive stay against time. We slow down and allow the callers to step back and reflect; ask questions; be listened to; cry, if they need to; and feel a connection with the person on the other end who wholly understands them.

– Jenny B.

The Hear My Voice program was life-changing for me. Connecting with other people living with mets and learning how to advocate for them has been such a powerful experience.

national ConferenCeS Breast cancer is complicated and treatment options are evolving. Those whose lives have been touched by breast cancer want access to information as it develops. LBBC’s conferences give people the opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field.

In 2015, we broadened our reach by holding conferences in Denver and Philadelphia, giving even more people access to the in-person information and community of support experienced at these weekend-long events.

Close to 550 people from 43 states attended our conferences in 2015. LBBC was able to provide travel grants to nearly half of these people, many of whom live in underserved areas with less access to resources specific to their type and stage of disease. Just as important, all conference attendees had access to the support they need from women who understand what they’re going through.

Conference Presentations Now anyone can access conference presentations from anywhere, at any time, on LBBC.ORG. These recordings are a valuable resource for those unable to attend a conference in person. In addition, many conference sessions are also streamed live.

“Thanks so much for providing me

[with a travel grant]. I had a wonderful time

and learned so much. The conferences always give me a

rejuvenation to continue to fight. I feel like Rocky! Thanks for all you do for breast cancer patients. We really need LBBC. My friend who came was so excited when she came back home. She kept thanking me for telling her about LBBC. I told her I LOVE LBBC. The ladies and men on staff are so supportive and caring.”

younG WoMen’S initiatiVe Approximately 26,000 women under the age of 45 were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.* These young women have a unique set of needs that we strive to meet through tailored content via our Young Women’s Initiative.

*Source: American Cancer Society (http://www.cancer.org/acs/groups/content/ @research/documents/document/acspc-046381.pdf)

This content is delivered through webinars, Twitter Chats, conference sessions and publications tailored to young women, with topics such as experiencing early menopause, intimacy and sexuality, fertility issues and more. YWiConnect also launched in 2015, which utilizes text messaging to notify subscribers when LBBC adds new content and programming for young women.

In addition, 29 women joined LBBC’s Young Advocate Program this year, bringing the total to 76 and furthering our commitment to underserved populations. Our Young Advocate Program provides the tools and training to help young women with limited incomes use their personal breast cancer experience to make a difference in their communities.

CiS B. Golder Quality of life Grant At LBBC, we know that a breast cancer diagnosis can have a serious financial impact on the person diagnosed and their household, which is why we offer the Cis B. Golder Quality of Life Grant. In 2015, with the help of our partner Bringing Hope Home, we awarded 195 grants totaling more than $141,000 to women in the Greater Philadelphia area in need of financial help due to a breast cancer diagnosis. The funds can be used for rent, mortgage payments, utilities, transportation, child care, groceries and wellness services such as physical therapy and nutrition counseling. Since the grant’s inception in 2006, more than $1.3 million has been distributed to women in need.

I am so blessed to have been a part of this training. It’s only been 2 days since it ended, and I’ve told so many people about what I’ve learned.

yoGa on tHe StepS Yoga on the Steps continued to grow in 2015.

Our Philadelphia event was our biggest yet with nearly 2,500 registrants. In Denver we launched Wellness Weekend, which featured our Annual Conference followed by Yoga on the Steps. In addition to our events in Philadelphia, Denver and Kansas City, we added a new yoga event in Fort Myers, Florida with the help of our corporate partner White House Black Market. This was our most successful inaugural event ever, with close to 325 participants. We raised more than $70,000 while introducing this uplifting event to a new group of supporters. Overall, LBBC reached more than 4,000 new donors through Yoga on the Steps.

In preparation for our yoga event’s 15th anniversary, LBBC decided it was time for a new name that better reflected the spirit of the event. For those who attend, it is an inspirational morning which gives them the opportunity to connect with the community while also raising money in support of those affected by breast cancer. To more fully capture that spirit, LBBC developed the name Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s Reach & Raise. The new name was unveiled in November, and used for the May 15, 2016 event on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

A girlfriend of mine said we should check out [Yoga on the Steps] and we came with a few friends and really enjoyed it. In the process, a friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time around. She joined me on the steps for 2 years. She was my partner and we had a really good time, and then four years ago, she passed away. Now the event has become a really personal experience for us. She really embraced what LBBC does and thought it was really wonderful.

Your Dollars Make a Difference

After my breast cancer diagnosis, I was so busy trying to balance work and parenting that I did not have time to think about what was happening to my body through all of my treatment — surgery, chemo, radiation, more surgery . . . When I emerged on the other side I realized I’d been through something traumatic and I needed to re-center. LBBC’s Wellness Weekend in Denver looked like it would be just what I needed, but as a single parent I could not figure out how to pay for it. With a LBBC travel grant provided by generous donors, I was able to set my course to enter the next period of my life — survivorship — with strength, resources and support. Spending a weekend away, surrounded by other women whose experiences overlapped with mine, sharing our stories, hearing the speakers, participating in the amazing yoga class, meeting people who are living with cancer, people who consider themselves survivors, people who have devoted their careers to making the lives of people with cancer a little less hard, all of this inspired me. I look forward to participating in Reach & Raise Philadelphia with my young daughter this spring, so that she can experience the tremendous community of support, too. Thank you so much, Living Beyond Breast Cancer.

– Amy R.

Dear friends, I

t is an honor and a privilege to work with the many dedicated staff, volunteers and directors of Living Beyond Breast Cancer. It is because of these dedicated women and men and all of our many supporters and donors that we were able

to increase our programs and services in 2015. More people affected by breast cancer were able to access critical information and find the support they needed. Thank you for your generosity and commitment. We have more to do for the thousands of women who will be diagnosed or experience a recurrence in the year and years ahead. In honor of Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s 25th Anniversary in 2016, please consider joining us in a special way this milestone year. This could be donating 25 hours of your time or donating $25, $250 or $2,500 and asking a friend or colleague to join you. We each know someone whose life has been forever changed because of breast cancer. We each have the ability to help. With your support of Living Beyond Breast Cancer we can collectively achieve our vision of a world where no one impacted by breast cancer feels uniformed or alone. I hope I can count on you to join me.

With warmest regards,

Barbara J. Yorke Chair, Board of Directors
