Your Excellency Mrs. Layla El Solh Hamadeh, Your Excellency Minister Ziad Baroud, Honourable deputies, Dear members of the press,Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening,

Allow me to welcome you in the name of all themembers and the families of BASSMA and to thankyou for your presence today at our annual dinnerand for your support.

I know how much BASSMA is precious to yourhearts.

I especially welcome her Excellency Mrs. Leyla ElSolh Hamadeh, descendant of a patriotic renownedfamily and known for her humanitarian activitiesand support for the needy. Our annual dinner todayis under her auspices.

Your Excellency, thank you for your support andfor donating a refrigerated van through the AlWalid Ben Talal Foundation. This vehicle will allowus to deliver meals and food supplies to people inneed and to elders at home.

I would also like to welcome his ExcellencyMinister Ziyad Baroud who has taken part inBASSMA’s activities since 2004 and has closelyfollowed the situation of its families and elders.

As most of you know, BASSMA is a Lebanesecharity organization for social development aimingto rehabilitate and support families in need, basedon our belief that the Family is the pillar of oursociety.

By rehabilitation, I mean adopting and following upfamilies in need for a period of time varyingbetween one and five years depending on itsneeds. We work together with specialists ondeveloping an action plan aiming to assist thefamilies and enable them to redress their situationand become morally and financially autonomous.

During this period we also provide them with theiressential daily needs: from clothing, food supplies, medicines, medical care and house restorations, toensuring continuity of school enrolment andorganizing trips and outings.

Rehabilitation consists of three main components:education, finding job opportunities and mostimportantly building a personal relationship withthe families. This is precisely where theimportance of BASSMA lies and this is whatcharacterizes this organization.

Throughout eight years of action and fieldexperience, we have found out that 90% of thepeople under BASSMA’s care are on analgesics, and that the majority resist to the idea of workingbecause they have lost their self-confidence andthey don’t feel up to the responsibility. Thesepsychological problems are the most importantchallenge facing BASSMA’s rehabilitationprogram, because most the people we deal withare afraid to face society. This is the summit of despair. In such case, a box of food is not enough. Neithermedicines nor money… What these people reallyneed is personal and psychological follow-up for acertain period. They need a shoulder to cry on, anattentive ear, a kind smile and a loving andreassuring heart... in order to regain their self-confidence and to start facing society and life withconfidence and optimism.

When a family becomes strong enough and readyto accept the idea of integrating a job, we startproviding them with professional trainings.

And the last step that comes as a consecration ofour efforts is to find a job for these persons.

Here, I would like to salute and thank all BASSMA’smembers and volunteers who are giving their timeto support the families. With your smile and yourlove, you are changing lives of numerous families.

After eight years of field action, we have seen theconcrete results and the difference BASSMA hasmade in the life of the rehabilitated families: Beforeand After BASSMA. This motivates us to goforward and to find drastic solutions to socialdespair, unemployment and poverty in Lebanon.

Lebanon is still facing a financial crisis and manypeople are striving to find a job and pay their bills.Recent UN statistics have shown that:55% of the Lebanese do not have health insurance,20% are unemployed, and 15% do not have any heating system.

This is the reality of our country Lebanon, this isthe reality of its people,

This is our reality.

BASSMA refuses to accept this painful reality.

We refuse to see a mother not giving milk to herchild because it’s too expensive,

We refuse to see parents standing helpless beforetheir sick children

Or parents unable to send their children at school,

We refuse to see a family living in miserableconditions.

We refuse to deal with this situation in a superficialand temporary way, without sustainable solutions. We want to fight poverty, feed the minds and healthe hearts.Because this is the effective way to protect family, that is the pillar of our society.

I would like to cease this occasion to share withyou some of our main achievements for 2009. Thisyear BASSMA has:

1- Adopted 50 new families2- Distributed 1500 units of food and sanitary

products.3- Launched a partnership with the family care

section at Hotel Dieu de France and distributed253 medical cards.

4- Provided 70 scholarships in addition of books, stationeries and school outfits.

5- Restored 15 houses6- Included 500 persons in our cultural and leisure

activities. 7- Organized a vocational training for 200 young

women, financed by the Word Bank. Thistraining was very successful; it allowed us tofind jobs for 73% of the participants throughour Employment Office. I would like to thank theWorld Bank for his confidence in BASSMA.

8- In addition to all these services that are includedin the rehabilitation program, BASSMA offerson a monthly basis 1,400 warm meals to thepoor and the elderly in its Smiles Restaurantslocated in three regions: the lobby of SaintRita’s church in Sin El Fil, Freres School Furn ElChebak and Gemayzeh proving. In 2009,BASSMA distributed a total of 24,000 warmmeals. I would like to thank the Metropolitan Hotel, LaTabkha Restaurant, and many other restaurantslike Socrates, Fiona’s, Beirut Cellar, Tartuffo,Karam, as well as all the suppliers for theirsupport in making BASSMA’s restaurants asuccess story. I would also like to thank the Beirut CentralLions Club and Khoury Home for the equipmentof the restaurant in Gemayzeh. Thanks to Mr. Antoine Chamoun, head of theAlumni of Freres Furn El Chebak, we were ableto open our third restaurant.

Many thanks to the ladies volunteering in ourrestaurants and giving their love, care and timewithout any limits.

9- 500 students participated in Kidswap, aprogram launched by BASSMA in 2007 andaiming to raise student awareness on povertythrough their participation in BASSMA’sactivities and motivating them to becomeengaged citizens. The main schoolsparticipating in this programme are Jamhour,ACS, and IC. Through this program, we also organizeactivities with public school students comingfrom different political, religious and socialbackgrounds in order to show them how littlethey differ from each other and how much theyhave in common.

10-Launched the SGBL-BASSMA MasterCard – Ihope that all of you present here today willbecome permanent holders of this card. Byusing it, you will be financially helping ourorganization.

11-Launched the adoption program: Any of you can adopt a family and any of yourcompanies can adopt a project – to know moreabout this program kindly refer to the brochureof BASSMA.

Concerning our future projects:

1- We will start the “Dinner Delivery” project, using the refrigerated van donated by herExcellency Mrs. Layla El Solh Hamadeh. I wouldlike to thank her again for this valuable gift, which will enable us to deliver the food to theneedy and elders who cannot attend thelunches in BASSMA’s Smiles Restaurants.Through this project, we will make sure they donot feel abandoned by society.

2- Our aim is to open a Centre to welcomeBASSMA’s families. This Centre is a veryimportant project that will enable us toconcentrate all our activities in one place, increase our efficiency in improving ourservices and reinforce the personal relationship

we build our action on.

Before I conclude, I would like to reaffirm thatBASSMA’s aim is to serve children, youth and allLebanese families.

We are fully aware of our responsibility and we aredetermined, now more than ever, to carry on withour mission.

Our motto for 2010 will be “Blooming Smiles”. Wewill carry on, driven by the aim of drawing smiles.

Our projects are many… Our ambition is great …but is not enough without your support,

Humanitarian work is a long road, but we wouldsurely go faster if we march together.

BASSMA is eight years old, thanks to all of you.

Thank you again for your presence and permanentsupport.

I wish you a nice evening.

I- The Rehabilitation Program

BASSMA is currently in the process of rehabilitating more than 120 underprivileged families and leading themto self-sufficiency.

1. Food Aid Smiles Packs

Each month, BASSMAdistributes packscontaining basic supplies of food and hygiene to all BASSMAfamilies. The contents include items such as rice, sugar, beans, milk, soap, toothbrushes, and sweets.

2. Healthcare Services Toward Good HealthThe most deprivedfamilies often have tochoose between healthcare and food. Therefore, BASSMAcollaborates with the department of Family Medicine atHôtel-Dieu hospital, allowing deprived families underBASSMA’s care to seek medical attention whenever theyneed to, practically free of charge. BASSMA also coversmedication supplies, dental care, and medical emergenciessuch as hospitalization.

3. House Renovation Home Sweet HomeBASSMA works throughout the year to renovate the rundown houses ofdeprived families and elderly people, making sure that the homes arehealthy places to live in: re-building basic infrastructure, painting, and cleaning. The renovation project is animportant component of BASSMA’s family rehabilitation program; since it guarantees the security and safetyof family life.

4. Family Activities Joyful HeartsDeprived families are battling daily to meet the basic needs necessary fortheir survival. They tend to forget the simple pleasures of life, such asgoing to the beach or taking a trip to the mountains, and they definitely cannot afford to visit the most famoussites in their own country. Therefore, BASSMA organizes periodical cultural activities that allow families toleave their troubles aside and relax for an entire day. Past outings have included visits to Jeita Grotto, Taanayelforest, Aanjar ruins, and Byblos port among many others.

"Between Lazy B., Yarze’s swimming pool and its delicious icecold Jellab, shopping for hand made clutches at ABC andeating Sultan Ibrahim at Mandaloun sur Mer, I thought mysummer vacation in Beirut this year should have anothermeaning.

So I braved Achrafieh’s heat and walked into BASSMA’sResto Sourire in Gemmayze. La Tabkha had just delivered twohuge pots of "Riz a Djaj" (Rice and Chicken) with bread. Therewas no time to ask questions, as around 30 elderly peoplewere sitting and waiting to be served. Some were from thearea; others had walked for an hour to get there. For some, itwould be the only meal of the day, for others, a few days. Iwas busy trying to serve equal portions in white round plasticplates, as another volunteer was distributing them. Towardsthe end, an old lady walked towards me with a smallTupperware, asking if she could have seconds for herchildren at home...

There are the creative, delicious restaurants, and those thatserve "Riz a Djaj" on plastic plates. Both are fantastic. Both arein Gemmayze and both are part of Lebanon."

Maria Sarraf, Sr. Environment Economist at the World Bank, living in Washington DC..

Volunteers Testimonials

« Just a little word to announce that I am leaving Lebanon on the 26th of June,2010, to return to Switzerland.

I will truly miss the «Restos Sourires». This was a humanly rich experience forme. Despite the barrier of the language, which I unfortunately did not have thetime to learn, I developed affectionate bonds with a number of people who visitthe «Restos Sourires».

I would like to thank BASSMA for allowing me to live those moments of humansharing. I wish you a successful continuation in your commitment and hopethat one day we will have the chance to see each other again... »

Laurence Vuarambon, architect living in Switzerland.

II- The «Smiles Restaurants» Program

The “Restos Sourires” is a project initiated by BASSMA in March 2004 aiming at providing hotmeals to deprived people, coming from all around Beirut from the most unfortunate areas. In2010, BASSMA has been serving hot meals through three Smiles Restaurants, in Sin El Fil,Achrafieh and Furn El Chebbak.

III- The Dinner Delivery Program

BASSMA’s Smile refrigerated Bus delivers cooked meals to all those wholack resources and are unable to attend the Smiles Restaurants becausethey have young children, or because of illness or old age. BASSMA brings these people much-needednourishing meals, thus ensuring that they are never hungry and that they never feel abandoned by society.

“Youth goes in a flock, manhood in pairs, and old age alone. Those elderly, who go alone, hold as much of an important place in the heart of BASSMA’s mission as in mine.It is for them that BASSMA has designed the project “Dinner Delivery”.With a great deal of joy, I went looking for those persons, be they alone because of old age or because ofhandicap, with the goal of providing them with meals that could cover many days of the week. After this recruiting stage, the long-awaited D-Day arrived. On Tuesday the 6th of July, 2010, Rachid, Mirvatte and I took the van and started our tour with a lot of joyand enthusiasm.First, we went straight to the Metropolitan Hotel to pick up the meals that were prepared with care for thebenefit of BASSMA’s families. Then we started heading towards the homes where people were waiting for usto receive their meals. So we went from one region to the other, from one house to another… here we lost an address and wentthrough a big detour to find it… there we couldn’t find a parking place for the van… we had some physicalpractice going up the stairs in buildings without lifts… All those little pains do not count in the face of thesmile and joy of the people who awaited us.It is a beautiful and intense experience:Those people’s doors were wide open, and so were their hearts. They invited on us all of heaven’s blessings...And what really touched me was the way they embraced and kissed me like a dear child that has just beenreturned to them. These people are also very grateful for this service that BASSMA offers them. Some of them called the nextday to thank us again and mention which meals were particularly delicious. The meals that are offered are very rich and nourishing ones that the majority of these persons most often donot have the chance to eat.It is absolutely true that “there is more joy in giving than in receiving”… these people fill me with their love…Through their welcome, their goodness and their joy, they give a meaning to my life, a meaning I have longsought until I lost breath, and that I found again in their eyes…”

IV- Poverty - Awareness and Peace-Building Programs

1. KIDSWAP www.bassma.org/kidswap

In 2006, BASSMA developed KIDSWAP, a peace-buildingprogram achieving its aims through raising awareness on povertyand fostering social action among youth from variousbackgrounds. KIDSWAP’s aim is to prepare secondary levelstudents to face socioeconomic challenges affecting Lebanesesociety and find practical solutions to the problems they may facein the future. KIDSWAP has three main objectives:

1. Promoting and establishing bonds between young teenagersfrom different social backgrounds and religions in Lebanon, thereby encouraging tolerance and acceptance of othersregardless of geographical, religious, or social class disparities.

2. Encouraging students to move beyond their comfort zones and compare similarities with others instead ofdifferences.

3. Motivating youth to take action and to become responsible citizens who are involved in social action andwilling to make a positive change in their community.

Through KIDSWAP, Lebanese are offered the chance to create a better Lebanon, where barriers, prejudices, and fears of the “other” are dissolved, and understanding and tolerance can grow.

IC students’ Final ProjectThe final project the IC students of 2010 agreed upon was raising funds to buy summer work copybooks(Arabic-French and Mathematics) for the students of Salma Sayegh Public School. They held bake sales at their school in order to raise the money to buy the books; once they collected theneeded amount they bought 55 issues of books that covered grades 7 through 12. The IC students gottogether and organized the books according to grade, wrapped them neatly and delivered them to the PublicSchool.

Notre-Dame de Jamhour College students’ Final ProjectIn June 2010, a group of 10th grade students of the Notre-Dame of Jamhour college, were completing theirfinal project; the outcome of a whole year of preparation and collaboration between BASSMA/KIDSWAP andthe secondary school.Following 4 outings - targeting 4 main topics: education, health, way of life and future plan - the group ofstudents, fundraised through a cake sale, went to the public school Salma Sayegh to neatly repaint the wallsof one room and to put up a bookcase. The atmosphere became welcoming and was now suitable for readingin favor of students’ psychological well-being.A good deed undertaken by the enthusiastic students of the Notre-Dame of Jamhour College, the futuregeneration, in collaboration with BASSMA, aiming to reduce the socio-cultural and socio-economicinequalities in Lebanon.

2. Youth Community Service Program Schools are implementing obligatory community service hours in additionto academic requisites. Therefore, since 2007, several private highschools worked with BASSMA to complete community service quotas.

BASSMA has then designed an adapted program for students which can assimilate as many students as theschools administrations require, and which is designed around five main activities: Food Collection and FoodPacking, House renovations, Clothes Fairs organization, Participation in the Youth Development Program, andServing the Smiles Restaurants.Participating schools were: International College, Notre-Dame de Jamhour College, Notre-Dame de NazarethCollege and Saint-Joseph School.

Actio

nThroughout 2010, BASSMA recruited additional families to join the Rehabilitation Program. The mostdeprived families in greater Beirut are targeted: those with limited to no income, children in publicschools, not enough food on the table, homes in need of renovation, and days in need of hope.

When a family is referred to BASSMA, the association social’s team visits them in the comfort of their ownhome to evaluate the family’s abilities, needs, and poverty level, as well as the extent to which they can benefitfrom BASSMA’s all-inclusive Rehabilitation Program.

I- Profile of BASSMA’s families

Here are three examples of BASSMA’s newly recruited families that match the required criteria.

1- Hage The Hage family was referred to BASSMA in 2009. The father has been ill with diabetes for the past threeyears, and is currently suffering dialysis three times a week. He also had a foot amputated, further increasinghis needs. Before he became ill, he held a profitable sales position. The mother is unable to work with daytimehours as she is the sole source of care for her husband, and their two sons, ages 8 and 11. After their father became sick and both parents left work, the children had to leave their private school and arenow continuing their studies in a public school. Because of the dramatic lifestyle change, the boys are notadjusting well in their new school, causing poor grades. Upon assessment, BASSMA immediately recruited the Hage family, giving them access to all components ofthe Family Rehabilitation Program.

2- Koundakjian L. Koundakjian is 41 years old, illiterate, and lost her husbandfrom cancer just over a year ago. She has not worked since hispassing away, and supports her two children (6 and 8) withirregular assistance from her late husband’s brother. Her childrenare doing well in school despite their difficulties at home. Since this family has been referred to BASSMA, the association’steam has been looking for employment opportunities for themother. Options are limited as her children finish school in theearly afternoon. However, with support from BASSMA and regularcontact with its team, L. Koundakjian has faith in the fact that herluck has changed.

3- Haddad When a BASSMA team first went to visit the Haddad family near Dora, theywere shocked to find that there was an open hole in the ceiling, letting rain andcold air inside. Divorced for ten years, the mother and her three children, (23,17, and 12) survived on her income as a cleaning lady, until she developed acancer which she is currently in treatment for. Presently, the 23 year olddaughter’s limited salary is what supports the entire family, and BASSMA istaking every opportunity possible to alleviate the situation.

II- The task of the RF

Upon recruitment, each family is matched with a "ResponsableFamille", or RF.

RFs are motivated volunteers who work in teams of two and act asthe liaison between the family and the BASSMA management.

The principal functions of an RF are the following:

1. To make sure that all delivered goods and services are received bythe family (Smiles packs, medicine, school books, Holiday gifts, etc.) when needed, and according to deadlines..

2. To facilitate the family's participation in the following projects: a. Medical and Dental care: annual medical visit and regular check-

upsb. Family outingsc. Education: School attendance and Special courses if neededd. Employment: professional trainings and job seekinge. Renovation: house cleaning and renovationf. Etc.

Abou-Dany

Abou-Dany lived alone in an old little bus. His familyhad left him to live in the United States. He had noone and nothing. Alcohol was Abou-Dany’s major

problem. For three years, the volunteers taking care ofAbou-Dany lived a series of adventures, following himto Deir El Salib; looking for him in the streets when heescaped from the hospital; staying by his bedside at theintensive care unit the day he almost died of his sickliver; and listening to his musical talents for hours, asthey decided to offer him a guitar hoping to distract himaway from the alcohol. With Abou-Dany, life is full of surprises! Rabih, a BASSMAmember who looked after Abou-Dany, decided to look forthe latter's family … and he succeeded! Abou-Dany spoke to his family for the first time in twentyyears; he was thrilled! Rabih handled the paper work and Abou-Dany was reunited with his familyin the United States!! Abou-Dany is forever grateful to Rabih for changing his destiny… a truemiracle of life!

III- True Stories about rehabilitated BASSMA families

Ibtissam

Ibtissam’s only means of survival was prostitution. To help her changeher lifestyle, Cynthia and Cosette, two BASSMA volunteers, decided tofind her a new place to live and a new job. They helped her move out

and BASSMA took care of the rent fees. But while searching for anemployment, they discovered that she was pregnant. They later found outthat this wasn’t Ibtissam’s first pregnancy. Her other children were put atorphanages as soon as they were born. As a symbol of her sincere will tochange her lifestyle and a sign of gratitude towards BASSMA’s support,Ibtissam decided to keep her baby and wear the hijab. When Sergio wasborn, Ibtissam was scared; she did not know how she was going to workand pay her rent fees. BASSMA came to the rescue and found a nurserythat offered to take care of Sergio free of charge while Ibtissam workspart-time at a hotel. Years have passed and Sergio is now the belovedsweetheart of all BASSMA volunteers!

Georgette

When BASSMA first met Georgette, she was jobless and had to take care of her four boysaged between 12 and 16. Her husband had left her to live with her best friend, so she had

to manage to feed her family and pay their school fees by herself. To complicate things further, one of her sons, Charbel, is mentally and physically handicapped and carrying him

resulted in constant backaches. Despite it all,Georgette manages to keep a positive attitude and

a smile. She even managed to find for herself ajob as a saleswoman in a 1$ shop, followed by anemployment at a bakery for 350.000LBP permonth. Today, her two eldest sons Marwan andGeorge are employed, and BASSMA has openedthem Swing accounts at the Société Générale deBanque au Liban (SGBL) to help them managerevenue. BASSMA’s Employment Office helpedGeorgette to find a better paying job. Once thismission was accomplished, three members of thesame family became active within four years! Oneday Georgette told us: “You came right on time,my children were starving and I didn’t have

anything to feed them.” This will long stay in our memories. Here you go Georgette, your positivethinking, your good will and persistence, as well as your strong character, helped you go throughyears of indescribable suffering… The best is yet to come.

Joseph and Marie

One day, Joseph who was suffering from hemiplegia, went into a coma, leaving his wife Marie alone and helpless. The BASSMA Volunteers, confronting a series of administrative, legal and financial difficulties,

arranged for Joseph to be hospitalized at the charge of BASSMA and theMinistry of Health. They were also taking terms by his bedside when Marieneeded to rest, and were waiting with her for him to wake up. But Joseph didnot wake up. BASSMA's team prepared the funeral, and morally supportedMarie in her mourning. Today, Marie is doing well. Whenever she encountersa health problem, the neighbors immediately call BASSMA’s RF, and Rita andNaji are always nearby.BASSMA handles the monthly rent and electricity fees as well as medicinecosts.

Volunteer’s Testimonials

It’s been 3 years now that I’m anactive member of BASSMA. When I firstarrived from France, I was strongly

encouraged by a friend to join BASSMA, aLebanese humanitarian organization. As soon as Iattended a first meeting with them, I wasimmediately seduced by the dynamism and theteam spirit of its members. Moreover, they showeda real concern to assist the most deprived familiesof our society, regardless of their political orreligious affiliation. I joined the organization in2005 and I am now responsible for a family as wellas a member of several committees such as thesocial awareness program KIDSWAP, under theauspices of the World Bank or the workshopsimplemented in partnership with “Défi Liban”. I alsohelp in the organization and preparation of thenumerous BASSMA events. I am sure to be anactive participant in heartening the daily life ofsome of the most underprivileged Lebanesepopulation. Although our work is drop of water inthe ocean, all I can hope for is for BASSMA to growand extend to the whole Lebanese territory.

My name is Nicholas Wilski and I spent six weeks working as an intern with BASSMA inBeirut and throughout Lebanon. It was an incredible and unforgettable experience and onethat I greatly enjoyed and remember with pleasure. The people I worked with at BASSMA

were all young, enthusiastic and committed to helping to make a better and happier Lebanon. BASSMA, itsmembers and supporters are actively making a positive difference in Lebanon through hard work anddetermination and a wish to help those who are most vulnerable and needy. As an intern it was a pleasureto be a part of this team. I helped put together aid packages and write project proposals in Beirut. I alsoraised awareness and money for the organization at a festival at Faqra Club in the mountains of Lebanon. In my time with BASSMA I came to see what an incredible country Lebanon is and what a great potentialit has. With the help of organizations like BASSMA, Lebanon can recover from the years of war and politicaland social unrest which it has been plagued with inrecent times. As a non-political and non-religiousorganization, BASSMA is committed to helping allLebanese and is an example to others in the wish tocreate a peaceful, united and equal Lebanon. If youare interested in volunteer work that isenjoyable, rewarding and productive Ihighly recommend BASSMA.

Sophie El Murr, volunteer at BASSMA

When I first went through the differentaction plans of BASSMA, I wassurprised by the amount of work and

the number of projects that are going on, all in paralleland at the same time. The “Resto Sourire”, the FoodCollection, the Food Packing and Distribution, thefollow-up with BASSMA’s families and so many otherdetails that are time and energy consuming. Theintriguing part is that during my work in themanagement field, my original field of expertise, I wasconstantly faced with problems of lack of motivation, skipping deadlines, non-cooperation and other factors, that are totally human and can be present in any kind ofjob. Whereas, at BASSMA, I didn’t hear any of thosecomments that I use to deal with on daily basis at work.Everybody is energetic, positive and ready to help.People show up on time and projects are done withindeadlines. Volunteers, school students, scouts, employees, managers, doctors, even organizations like privateschools, hospitals, clinics and others. Those people leadbusy lives and are engaged with their own work andstudies, but they somehow found a way to help (bygiving their time, experience, know-how, or whateverthey are willing to do). People are willing to help andthere is always something that can be done.Amazingly, BASSMA has organized a chain between allof those groups of people in order to fulfill the needs ofthe deprived community, which is BASSMA’s mainmission.WOW.

Merci BASSMA.

When I arrived, I was shy butit took only some minutes to feel verycomfortable. Fortunately, this family was veryfriendly and its members wanted to help and gethelped.Actually, they have lots of problems but we canfeel that they are willing to get over theirsituation, which gave me a lot of strength andmade me more determined to help them tosolve their problems. At the end of my visit, I felt that I am part of thisfamily. I left feeling very happy as if I achieved alot of things although I didn’t even start. Butwhat is more important is the influence that thisfamily had on me. It wasn’t me who was helpingthem. In fact they were the ones helping mewith their love and gratitude. In only two visits, I felt I am very much attachedto this family and also very useful.Thank you BASSMA. »

« BASSMA is a charitable organization which helpsmore than 100 families on the financial level (rent, education, medical expenses, food, clothing…) and onthe emotional level.BASSMA organizes different events and activities to itsfamilies: trips, gatherings… It reunites its families inmany occasions so that they can celebrate together. This year and for the first time, I really felt thehappiness and the meaning of Christmas. I felt happy because I saw that the children and theirparents were both really glad, and the best moment waswhen I saw the faces of the children while receiving thegifts they always dream of, and which they got becauseof the people who offered those gifts. I am sure that Iwas not the only one to feel happy because of thosegifts, because the children themselves were happy andof course those who donated the gifts were glad to seethe happiness of the children. In additions to those activities, BASSMA owns tworestaurants where hot meals are served for deprived andelderly people. Also, BASSMA got lately a refrigeratedvan to distribute cooked meals to the people who can’tleave their houses because of health problems.Being part of all those actions, I would like to expressthe beauty of working in an organization such asBASSMA.The work is sometimes exhausting, but seeing thesmiles on the faces of deprived people when gettingtheir food makes me very satisfied and happy becauseI am able to please old people. And what’s better thanhearing those touching words: “May God bless you,May God protects you…” those words make mehappier and much more attached to my work because Iknow that those people are very honest in their words.I would like to thank Sandra because she taught mehow to help others and I was able to discover thegreatness of this work, and the happiness felt byanyone who performs it.I wish Sandra and BASSMA continuous success andprogress so that they can continue to plant smiles onthe faces of people in need. »

« For me, being member of BASSMA doesn’tmean working in a charitable organization only.I had the opportunity to join the volunteers ofBASSMA in 2010. During this year, theorganization had already set a strategic plan ofdevelopment, and the focus was mainly on howto reinforce the group of volunteers.

From the first meetings, I was able to recognizethat the administrators of BASSMA work toassure that all the work and the qualifications ofthe volunteers are oriented to serve the mainobjective of the organization, and that is therehabilitation of the underprivileged families, through a structured personalized program.

However, I also noticed that all those actions aretaking place in a very active and friendlyatmosphere, with a motivated and respectfulteam who has a very solid relation with thedeprived people whom they help. This solidrelation exists thanks to the policy of BASSMAthat allows to each volunteer to choose his ownfunction in the field of the organization, so thateach action is based on the chosenresponsibility of the volunteers.

My enrollment in the Family Commissionoffered me the chance to meet EVA, agrandmother who suffered from social, financialand familial tragedies but who is very hopefulabout a better future awaiting her and herfamily. I decided to devote myself to serve thisfamily through regular visits.

Being a generous and devoted volunteer inBASSMA proved to be a magnificent andencouraging experience on the personal level. That’s why I invite everyone who wishes toexperience the happiness of helping people tojoin BASSMA. »

Sponsorship funds go directly to rehabilitating needy families and to create collective sustainable developmentprojects that have a direct effect upon Lebanese families, and thus upon the heart of Lebanese civil society. Family Sponsorship starts at $20.00 a month. This monthly donation will help improving the living conditionsof BASSMA’s families and will contribute to their rehabilitation. Many individuals have already decided to makethese monthly contributions to BASSMA’s cause, and their support is greatly appreciated.

4. Individual Fundraising InitiativesPromoting Altruistic Spending!Alternative giving entails giving or directing a gift towards a charitable organization, or asking for people todonate to a cause instead of buying items for themselves which they may not use. Christmas Gifts

Countless families in Lebanon can barely afford to feed themselves. For them, holidays aresources of concern rather than a chance to create long-lasting memories with their loved ones.

For the second time this year, and with your support, BASSMA delivered Christmas presents toneedy and deprived families according to their “wish list”.

Heartfelt thanks to you all for making the Christmas Season special for all of BASSMA’s deprivedfamilies!

Your amazing support and gift donations allowed children and parents from underprivilegedbackgrounds to receive the gifts that they dreamed about!

The children’s faces lit up with excitement when their gifts were passed out during BASSMAChristmas lunch on December 20th, and the parents were greatly surprised when their specialpresents were delivered directly to their homes.

For example, a 12 year old boy named Simon was overjoyed when he opened his gift and foundthe guitar of his dreams inside!

Mrs. Azrieh was overwhelmed with joy when BASSMAmembers delivered a brand new fridge to her!Tante Adele shed tears of joy when she received a newtelevision.

In all, 315 gifts were offered to needy people thisChristmastime!

We owe the success of the Gift Matching program toall the people who participated charitably in thisprogram.

Please accept our thanks on behalf of the families andchildren for your involvement in BASSMA’s “Make aChristmas Wish come True” initiative!

Thank you for your involvement, may God bless you andgrant you in return all the happiness you deserve formaking these family members smile and enjoyChristmas just as we do!

The BASSMA team wishes you a very happy Year 2011!
