Board of Directors

“It is a rare experience to be present at the birth of a nonprofit organization. It is even rarer that the nonprofit becomes a major player in its chosen field of endeavor, one that makes significant contributions to our community and that demonstrates, through superior management and dedication, a capacity to weather our periodic economic storms.

I had the pleasure and honor to have been one of four individuals who met 25 years ago with Youth Frontiers’ founder, Joe Cavanaugh, when he gathered us at Perkins® to lay out his dream for an organization that could assist parents and schools to instill and strengthen core values in our youth that will aid them in navigating the turbulent waters of the teenage years.

In the past 25 years, more than one million students have been touched by YF’s programs. We rejoice in learning how the success of Youth Frontiers exponentially exceeded our wildest dreams when we met 25 years ago.”

– Chuck Denny, Founding YF Board MemberThe original Board of Directors, from L to R: Jim Secord,

Wayne Vander Vort, Chuck Denny, Ernie Dorn, Joe Cavanaugh.

Thanks to outgoing board member Marialice Harwood for her support and service.

*The Youth Frontiers Board of Directors and staff were saddened by the loss of board member and long-time supporter Verne Johnson on November 2, 2012. Professionally, Verne was known for a lifetime of innovative leadership at the Citizens League, General Mills and the Civic Caucus. Verne was also a role model for our staff on leading with civility, creativity and passion; serving with humility and joy; and making a difference for others every day. We will miss his wisdom at YF and we remain grateful for his tireless service.

A 25-Year Retrospective

Reflections to Guide the Next 25 Years

Youth Frontiers has officially come of age: This year, we celebrate our 25th anniversary! Yet, with this maturity also comes responsibility.

Amidst the growing divisiveness and incivility we see all around us, Youth Frontiers tells students every day that even if they aren’t friends, they don’t have to treat others like enemies. Our retreats teach kids to be civil; to disagree respectfully; to stand up for good character and values; to ensure that every student, no matter how popular or unpopular, is treated with the dignity every human being deserves.

Youth Frontiers is operationally sound and well equipped to meet the growing needs of schools to build healthy, strong and respectful

communities – and we need to leverage our expertise.

My vision for the next 25 years at Youth Frontiers is informed by what I’ve learned in the last 25 years, thanks to the loyalty of our schools (88 percent of which bring us back year after year) and the generosity of our donors (you). From the Twin Cities to Omaha to Milwaukee and beyond, communities are stepping up to support our retreats. Here are a few critical pieces of wisdom that are guiding YF’s future:

• Relationships matter more than transactions. We will continue to deepen our relationships with donors, schools and students. It is more important that a financial supporter is a friend than a donor. It is more important that a principal feels supported by us than we get a retreat “sale.”

• We need to honor educators. Youth Frontiers is committed to ensuring that teachers are honored and are renewed in their critical purpose to educate young people. As a teacher on one of our recent educator retreats said on an evaluation, “This was the best use of a staff development day in my 21 years of teaching, hands down. My soul thanks you!”

• Character matters as much as academics. I want my second-grade daughter, Tess, to understand that everything is not just about her. We need to continuously remind this young generation (who have incredible potential to heal some of the wounds caused by our own) that it is not about “YOU.” Rather it is about being good, doing good and living out the values of responsibility, moral courage and respect each and every day, even when no one is watching. That is character.

On behalf of the 35 staff at Youth Frontiers who have the privilege of doing this important mission, thank you. You make our jobs possible, and in doing so, you make the lives of 100,000 kids and educators better. That is 100,000 attitudes and hearts changed. That is 100,000 kids choosing to be good and do good for this world.

Enjoy the pages of this Annual Report as we look back at the last 25 years and as we look ahead to the next quarter century. There is overwhelming need in our schools for our mission – and you make it possible.

With gratitude,

Dear Friends,

Students Speak: How YF Changed Me

Kindness Retreat for grade 4 or 5:

In a high-energy day, the Kindness Retreat promotes kindness and builds empathy skills. Students participate in activities that help them understand the painful effects of bullying and give them tools to prevent it.

Overheard on a Kindness Retreat:

“After the Kindness Retreat, I saw less bullying, less harassing and less graffiti at school. It helped us learn how to be kinder as fourth graders so we could make our school better as fifth graders.”

– Rykiah, Bancroft Elementary, Minneapolis, Minn.

– Dr. David Walsh, Founder, Mind Positive Parenting; YF Board Member

YOUTH FRONTIERS PROGRAMS ARE CHANGING STUDENTS’ LIVES AND IMPROVING THEIR SCHOOLS.

Responsibility.

5

Responsibility Retreat for grade 11:

The Responsibility Retreat challenges a select group of 11th-grade students to acknowledge and accept their “ability to respond” to problems they see at school. It inspires them to take a leadership role in making their school a better place.

Overheard on a Responsibility Retreat:

“Youth Frontiers helped us see that we each have a piece to pick up to make our school a better place and gave us space to talk about issues we see at school. My goal was to improve the cohesiveness of my class. With the exercises we did on the Responsibility Retreat, I learned to work more effectively with my classmates. Now, we can be a model to the incoming freshmen.”

– Alex, Brandon Valley High School, Brandon, S.D.

Courage Retreat for grade 7 or 8:

The Courage Retreat helps create a school where everyone is welcome by inspiring students to follow their hearts instead of following the crowd. Students learn how to use moral courage to stand up for their values and make responsible decisions, despite their social fears.

Overheard on a Courage Retreat:

“The Courage Retreat was great because everyone was included. It helped me respect my classmates more and changed how I think about what I say to them. I pledged to be less judgmental. Now, my friends and I are still trying to achieve the goals that we set at the end of the retreat day.”

– Harry, Oak Grove Middle School, Bloomington, Minn.

Respect Retreat for grade 9 or 10:

The Respect Retreat gives students a day to experience what school could be like if everyone is respected by increasing empathy and social awareness. It challenges students to respect themselves, to respect others and to stand up for respect.

Overheard on a Respect Retreat:

“After my Respect Retreat, I’ve been aware of how I can respect others more. I didn’t realize before how my actions could have a negative impact on my classmates. I want to make sure I don’t hurt anyone again.”

– Erin, Eagan High School, Eagan, Minn.

NEARLY NINE OUT OF 10 SCHOOLS BRING YOUTH

FRONTIERS BACK EACH SCHOOL YEAR TO WORK WITH THEIR STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS TO BUILD

A POSITIVE SCHOOL COMMUNITY.

25 Years of Impact on Schools

6

Here’s why.

We speak kid. Youth Frontiers has worked with 1.2 million students and educators in the last 25 years. Our best practice experiential learning model – the process of making meaning from direct experiences – works for all learning styles.

We have a world-class staff. 92 percent of educators rate the quality of our programs and our retreat presenters as “excellent.”

We enhance social-emotional learning. Independent evaluation by the University of Minnesota confirms that on our retreats, students obtain and enhance social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies like empathy, social awareness and conflict resolution.

We build and deepen connection. Students feel more connected to classmates, teachers and school after participating on our retreats. We purposefully work with an entire grade of students to break down social barriers and deepen existing relationships.

We develop leaders. We provide excellent leadership development for high schoolers through our Responsibility Retreat and opportunities to lead small groups on our other retreats.

Our 25th year represents expansion

and growth as we move into new

communities in the Midwest, bring

more retreat leaders on board to reach

more kids and provide even more ways

for supporters to get involved.

What’s New at Youth Frontiers

7

New technology. We launched a brand new website (www.youthfrontiers.org) to include more resources for parents and make it easier for educators to utilize our retreat follow-up materials.

New Retreat Staff. We continue to hire new Retreat Staff to help us reach more students (more than 100,000!) on more retreats (more than 700!) this year.

New communities. We recently held our first-ever support-raising event in Omaha and are seeing funding and retreat numbers grow in Madison, Milwaukee, Sioux Falls and La Crosse.

New ways to support YF. We’re launching a Planned Giving program, giving supporters of all means a chance to leave a legacy that will help YF reach more students for generations to come.

New programs. We partnered with Dr. David Walsh to create the Mind Retreat, a program for educators that dives into the latest brain research on why student-teacher connection is important. We’re also developing new resources and programs for parents to assist in their efforts to raise smart AND good kids.

Check out what we’ve been up to!
