Rapid expansion of the Health Professions

Education has created a demand for a new

cadre of educators and leaders who are

competent and motivated for

promoting transformative learning across the health profession. The new career

pathway provided by the SBV caters to the aspirants from medical, dentistry, nursing

and allied health sciences to pursue higher degrees in a flexible manner.



The unique features of the new programs are Competency Based Curriculum designed on

the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) recommended by the UGC as a major reform in

higher education. The programs are based on “Heutagogy model” with flexibility for self-

determined learning.

Career Opportunities

Specialization in health professions education offers unique opportunities

for medical/dental/nursing professionals to emerge as leaders in this critical

domain. They can choose to be teachers (subject to fulfilling required qualification),

trainers, curriculum planners or administrators. Those with M.Phil degree can pursue

career in educational research. Many of the organizations allocate a higher weightage

for the expertise in education both for recruiting or promoting key positions such

as Deans, Registrars, and Controllers of examination in colleges and Universities.

FACULTY OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES (AHS) The Allied Health Science Programs (AHS) that our University offers are

specifically designed to prepare graduates for work in rewarding careers in the nationally

and globally growing health care industry.

The demand-driven health-related programs and the excellent infrastructure, clinical

facilities and dedicated and qualified faculty gives conducive learning atmosphere for

students.

SBV AHS currently offers Undergraduate programs over 100 students. The strategic

location of SBV at Pondicherry, the word now synonymous with excellence in education

and healthcare offers an intellectually stimulating environment coupled with rich cultural,

social, sporting and harmonious life.

2.8 Examination/ Evaluation Reforms initiated by the Institution (for example: Open Book Examination, Bar Coding, Double Valuation, Photocopy, Online Multiple Choice Questions)

Pre-Examination process

(i) Setter level- The whole process of setting question papers has been shifted from manual to online format with adequate safe-guards.

(ii) Question paper review: A new process of scrutiny of question papers has been introduced by a review board- External review process for PG courses have been introduced from 2014-15.

(iii) Examiner level- The whole process of maintaining database of examiners has been shifted from manual

to electronic database, which is constantly updated. Appointment letters to examiners and receiving of consent forms is made online.

Examination process:

(i) New answer booklets with pre-printed barcode for easy compilation of student information was designed and introduced by SBV.

(ii) Answer booklet with OMR coding sheet for examiners to enter marks question-wise. To eliminate ‘examiner bias’, each examiner was asked to correct the same question in all the answer booklets.

Post - Examination process:

(i) Scanning of OMR sheets using OMR Scanner –Fujitsu (fi-6125) and Licensed Verificare software (Version 3.8, Ginger webs pvt.ltd) enabling easy computerized tabulation of marks.

(ii) Online publication of results in SBV Garuda system.

Rigorous features introduced by the university to ensure confidentiality in the conduct of the examinations

a) Question paper set by external examiners is received by 128 bit encrypted e-mail (UG -3 sets &PG -2 sets). 1 set is selected randomly by COE.

b) Scrutiny of question papers by subject experts is done in a highly confidential manner.c) A dedicated high speed Xerox and printing machine is used to print question papers securely

under direct supervision of COE in a secluded chamber. d) The question papers are printed prior to examinations.

e) For Sri Sathya Sai Medical College, QPs are sent by 128 bit encrypted mail 1 hour before the commencement of examination.

f) Before entering the exam hall, students are thoroughly checked by security personnel to avoid the student carrying any unauthorized materials-all electronic devices (particularly cell phones), study materials and etc.

g) In the exam hall, CCTV Cameras are installed to monitor students’ behaviour.



h) Adequate numbers of experienced invigilators are arranged in the exam hall along with Chief Superintendent.

i) Examination conduction protocol and manual are available with the chief superintendent.

j) Flying squad from on campus and off campus selected by Vice - Chancellor are arranged.

k) Seating arrangement are made in a scrambled manner.

l) Standard procedure for exam entry & exit time – no entry after 30min of commencement and no exit 30min before the end.

m) Written answer booklets along with examinee information are collected in sealed cover and transferred to COE’s office.

n) The institution has a Manual for Examinations. All examinations are conducted strictly as per the examination manual. The manual consists of :For students and Faculty-

IQAC conducts Quarterly Administrative And Academic Audit(AAA) to Monitor/Evaluate the Teaching & Learning processes.

Annual assessment and feedback of students on Faculty and subject is monitored and analyzed by IQAC.

Conduction of Unit, sessional and Model examination for UG and PG students ,their performances are analyzed by respective coordinators and plan for remedial classes who need additional support



Mentor Mentee Meeting is conducted very month and analyzed by Nodal officer of every Batch with corrective actions and solutions for the students’ problems in relation to teaching and learning

Parent teachers association meet is held in once in every 3 months and the progress of the students is informed to the parents

Criterion – V5. Student Support and Progression

5.1 Contribution of IQAC in enhancing awareness about Student Support Services

Orientation regarding various student support services is done in I and II MBBS. Posters and

circulars are displayed regarding student support services such as student clubs(8 clubs such as

ecoclub ,fine arts, sports, literary),co-curricular activities, NSS, anti-ragging, grievance issues.

Monthly meeting of student clubs are conducted to spread the awareness. Online grievance and

support portal is established(www.support.sbvu.ac.in)for any grievance.

Half yearly assessment of students’ academic progress and attendance is carried out. 5.8 Details of Gender Sensitization Programmes



The women cell as well as IQAC conducts gender sensitization and awareness programs about women rights (constitutional / legal / human), support for women and their privileges. It also conducts gender audit every year. The cell/committee attends to all the grievances of women and welfare measures. It conducts orientation classes for new batch of students & staff both on formal and informal basis. It also arranges socio physiological counseling, soft skill training programmes.

The unique feature of SBV is its efforts to create awareness and rehabilitation of transgender community, counseling, employment to them as well offer special clinics on transgender and SRS facility at minimal cost. It also arranged special lectures on the topic. The government representatives of Govt. of Chhattisgarh visited SBV and have shown interest for MOU in this aspect

In collaboration with SBV , International Women’s Day (March 8th ) was celebrated by conducting various competition for students and faculty among the constituent colleges.

During December 2015 torrential rain / flood that wreck havoc in many places in Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu . SBV’s Outreach Team swung into timely action . Disaster Response Team were formed with representatives from various departments of MGMCRI, IGIDS, KGNC & Off Campus. Department of Social and Preventive Medicine played a pivotal role in organizing and channelling the field activities. The following are students / faculty participation in Flood Relief Camp and carried out the following preventive measures:

6.3 Quality improvement strategies adopted by the institution for each of the following:

6.3.1 Curriculum Development

With a vision to evolve into a center of excellence in medical education, the medical education unit constantly strives to effectively aid in the implementation of curriculum.

Undergraduate Curriculum: The Medical education unit aided in the developing the Integrated curriculum being implemented in the First and second year MBBS. MEU team undertakes, on a regular basis, training programmes and workshops for the faculty and the students in order to facilitate the design of the integrated curriculum. MEU team collaborates along with various



departments to plan and deliver this integrated curriculum. Regular feedback from the stakeholders is collected which helps to plan timely interventions to facilitate the process of integration.

Postgraduate Curriculum: With the proud initiative of the SBV- a paradigm shift to a competency based curriculum for post graduate teaching, the MEU team was part of planning of the curriculum. Workshops to familiarize the faculty with the competency based approach were undertaken. MEU also aided in developing an extensive list of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) in each subject specialty to be used as measures for the competencies trained. MEU also undertook workshops and hands on training exercises to facilitate the faculty’s understanding of the E-portfolio platform to be used for 360 degree workplace based assessment system.

Medical education unit regularly conducts faculty development programmes to aid in improving the skills of the teaching faculty and create an atmosphere for progressive learning. Annually on an average 15 FDP’s are taken up by the MEU of SSSMCRI. The workshops are designed to cater the following areas:

1. Undergraduate Teaching: A three day orientation programme for the freshly joined undergraduate students is organized in the month of September-October every year to facilitate smooth induction of the students. The students during these three days are oriented to various aspects of the MBBS curriculum and Medical Ethics.

2. Post Graduate Teaching: Three workshops for the fresh batch of post graduate student are organized by the medical education unit. The first workshop is a general orientation programme which is followed by a Three day orientation programme designed to familiarize the postgraduates with the competency based medical education. They are given a clear overview of the competency based programme and how to use the en-trustable activities as a measure of their skills. They are also given hands on training in the E-portfolio platform used for 360 degree workplace bases assessment.

A research methodology workshop spanning for three day which covers in detail the process of planning and writing a research proposal is also undertaken. The workshop appraises the postgraduate’s ability to design their thesis protocol and also participate in critical appraisal of scientific writing.

Faculty Development: The MEU team organizes Two MCI approved Revised Basic Course Medical Education Workshop Spanning Three days under an observer from the MCI nodal center. The workshop is a part of the medical council of India’s drive to encourage faculty development. The workshop’s are scheduled in the months of February and September.

In addition to the above mentioned endeavours theses the MEU team also organizes various faculty development programmes to facilitate integrated teaching and improving faculty skills. Various workshops on Microteaching, Question paper setting, small group discussions; Preparing Specific Learning Objectives, Workplace based assessment etc are conducted annually for the benefit of the faculty at SSSMCRI

6.3.2 Teaching and Learning

Orientation Program for I years for 10 days. HeART – Rapid rural appraisal using qualitative techniques – An experiential program on ‘Early

community Exposure’ for I MBBS students. STEPs Curriculum for year 1 implemented.



Introduction of Ganesha’s Canvas – Learning Management System for I MBBS course. CReAMS – A hospital based experiential Module on ‘System Based Practice’ for Semester 3/ II

MBBS students. Integrated Model for ‘Introduction to Clinical Medicine’ course – III semester /II MBBS using

Standardized Patients trained from local community. Clinical Curriculum for Semester 4 & 5 / II MBBS, features ‘Clinical Connect’ modules bridging

basic & Clinical sciences. Vertically Integrated, longitudinal Modules on ‘Ethics & Professionalism’ and ‘Communication Skills’ starting from I MBBS to Internship. Clinical clerkship for semester 6 final MBBS Part I students in Emergency Medicine & ICU. Systematic Training Program for CRRIs featuring Practice – Oriented, Integrated Clinical skills

approach – 26 Modules. Mandatory ACLS & BLS training program for all Interns. Orientation Program for I Year PGs – 3 days. COBALT Program for PGs E Portfolios for PG student to practice based Learning & Improvement. Mandatory ACLS & BLS training program for all PGs. Training in ‘First Aid’ and ‘Trauma’ module for all surgical specialty PGs. ‘Training of Young Trainers’ – pedagogy training for II year PGs. Training in ‘Research Methodology’ for all PGs. Courses in ‘Basic of Critical Care’ & ‘Palliative care’ for PG students.

6.3.3 Examination and Evaluation

The following reforms have been introduced:

1. All the Departmental Heads prepared the blue print of question paper which was used as a template for the question paper setting.

2. Correspondence for question paper setting was made fully online. The security of

confidential documents is ensured by encrypting.

3. Pre-validation of question papers by external reviewers (subject experts).

a) The whole process of setting question papers is received via e-mail. The

electronic transcript of which is available for scrutiny by Scrutiny Board.

b) Scrutiny Board comprises Chairman of the Board (single member) for each

subject.

c) Question paper Scrutiny: Controller of examinations ensures transparency in

the review process of question papers by the Scrutiny Board by maintaining

documents for the same.

4. Post-validation of results introduced to identify the lacunae. Individual department-

wise meetings are held to discuss the issues in post-validation.

a) Answer keys are prepared by the evaluators for all UG courses, which is used

for valuation and as a reference for re-evaluation.



b) Results of group performance are analyzed.

5. Multiple workshops are conducted for faculty orientation, training and capacity

building and a National Level experts Committee meeting was convened on May 23,

2014 to look into the prospect of the Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth’s proposal on

Objectivisation of Clinical / Practical exams.

6. Mechanism for redressal of grievances with reference to examinations

a) SBV constitutes the grievance committee comprising of Vice-Chancellor, one

member of board nominated by Vice-Chancellor, dean/principal of constituent

college, senior professor, one reader, one member of administrative staff and

educational administrator nominated by vice-chancellor.

b) Redressal of grievances by introduction of – 1. Revaluation 2. Retotaling.

c) Grievance redressal committee looks into complaints on a case by case basis.

This committee looks in to the various aspects of grievances and their redressal as per the SBVU bye-laws laid down. These details are provided in the Examination manual.

Started in June 2009 as a learning resource for faculty, UGs and PGs to promote knowledge and proper application of safe and effective use of medicines along with updates about pharmacotherapeutics and clinical research and also to promote writing and editing skills among faculty and PGs of the department. Title of the Best Practice: Examination reforms in SBV.

Name of the Department: Examination Wing, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth.

The context: SBV is a budding University having many under-graduate and post-graduate courses. With the introduction of many new courses and increase in the intake of students, it became imperative to introduce reforms in the examination wing. Also earlier, most of the work was done manually, involved a lot of man-power and was cumbersome. Hence, reforms were introduced in various steps of the examination process to make it more efficient.

Objectives of the Best Practices: The main objectives of Examination reforms in SBV are - to make the examination process smooth and efficient, maintain confidentiality, ensure good quality of question papers, to achieve the objective of ensuring fair examinations for students with provision for feed - back and grievance redressal, to use latest technologies for preventing malpractice, to minimize bias in valuation and quick publication of results.

The Practice:

In order to make the examination process smooth, an Integrated Examination Platform called SBV Garuda system was introduced, which is used for- online application for examination by the student, for entry of practical marks by examiners and to publish results.

To improve efficiency, the manual database of examiners was made paper-less in 2014. The database of examiners have been made paper-less for – MBBS, MD/MS, BDS, MDS and B.Sc Nursing courses.

Manual method of receiving question papers was done away with and a new process of receiving Encrypted Question papers (for maintaining confidentiality) from the setters through email was established, thus making the whole process paper-less.

Quality of question papers was ensured by Constitution of a scrutiny board for review of question papers for - Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses. The scrutiny board is responsible for ensuring that the question paper adheres to the blue -print and paper-setter guidelines.

Feed - back is received from all the stake-holders in the examination process, i.e., scrutiny board members, students, practical examiners and evaluators. This helps in the further improvement of the examination system.

Introduction of central valuation and objectivizing valuation of theory papers by assigning one question or set of questions to a particular examiner, who will be evaluating the same for the whole group, have helped in minimizing bias.

Post – validation - In this process, the performance of the whole group is analyzed subject-wise and question-wise, in order to identify the areas where students have not performed well. The reasons for the good or bad performance are analyzed by the individual departments and a report is submitted to the office of the controller of



examinations. This will provide valuable information for further improving the quality of question papers and also will provide information to the departments to focus on the relatively weak areas, which can be further strengthened during T/L process. Post-validation was introduced in 2014 for the MBBS course. Post-validation for BDS and B.Sc Nursing have been introduced in 2015.

To ensure fair examinations for students, the following measures have been introduced -

Generation of Computerized and personalized Hall ticket, with the candidate’s UIN and photograph for correct identification. Biometric system of attendance has been introduced to remove the risk of impersonation.

Examination halls are installed with CCTV & Mobile jammers for the prevention and identification of malpractice.

Introduction of pre-bar coded OMR answer booklets with various features for Computerization of theory valuation and to make the process non-biased and transparent.

Strict adherence to the examination manual is ensured. A robust malpractice prevention mechanism is in place and till date 11 cases have

been reported and punitive action has been taken in these cases. Use of Licensed Verificare software for decoding the OMR sheets. Introduction of re-totalling and re-valuation for MBBS, BDS and B.Sc. Nursing

as a part of grievance redressal.

Obstacles faced if any and Strategies adopted to overcome them:

1. The members of the examination wing were trained to handle various new systems and equipments- like SBV Garuda system, mobile jammers, Biometric identification systems, Bar-code scanners and licensed Verificare software (for decoding the OMR sheets).

2. Faculty members of various departments were trained on preparing blue-prints for their subjects.

3. For central valuation, detailed instructions were prepared for the evaluators on filling up the evaluation scores without errors.

Impact of the Best Practice:

These reforms and best practices have ensured an efficient and fair examination process and have made quick publication of results possible (results are declared within 5 working days).

The Radiographic waste generated especially the Lead foils are disposed separately and not incinerated to avoid lead vapour inhalation. Thus reducing environmental hazard due to lead toxicity.

Most of the official communications are through whatsapp and emails thus reducing paper consumption.

1. Department : Anatomy

Like Best:

The teachers / the content / Good / It’s very interesting The method they teach and effort they take to understand makes me like

this subject. This subject keep to have more knowledge about our human body but even

if we study so much nothing is understood How much ever we study, it easily evaporates from our brain and we can’t

recall anything during exams notes on some important topics will be useful for us

Dissection class / same of the portions are very interesting It is interesting especially neuroanatomy It is the basis of all we are gonna study in proceeding years especially

surgery Dissection classes are the best in Anatomy After teaching we want to dissection and we understood what we learned Anatomy is easily understandable than other subjects It creates me interest to know about the human body and god’s wonderful

creation Subject is systematic to learn, even though it is voluminous Clinical aspects are very interesting The way of teaching is really good. I like because it is related to a human

body. It’s quite interesting but little tough to recollect. Small group teaching is best and helps more in understanding the subject. Dissection classes are very interesting. IGT are very nice which creates

interest on that topics PBL’s, IGT’ s were very useful Always department is available to clear our doubt The well – planned schedule and revisions given in dissection lab helps a lot. Most of the faculties are concerned about the concept understood by the

student and not the time stipulate for the completion of the portion Though anatomy is a dry subject, the teachers do their best to make it

interesting and clear Orientation to human body / learn by visualizing It gets us to know all the structural organization of the body Theory classes reinforce what is learnt in dissections vice versa. Important

created to make them remember easily The important questions should be displayed by all the faculty - Only some

faculty like Anbalagan Sir Usha Madam and Praveena mam do this IGT is waste of time Need more tests in between for embryology and histology. Difficult to learn

at bulk at last. Dissection should be made clear. We find it difficult to co-relate theory with

practical classes. Please do like this for also Physiology and Biochemistry Satheesh Sir Rearrange the time table. Dissection table teachers must be present every class and should be

available for the student doubts anytime Instead of suggesting Vishram singh , student can be encouraged to learn

from gray’s anatomy Certain class can be made a bit understandable No improvement needed, everything is good. Please leave us on time or else arrange proper transport always making us

difficult. Lectures can be based on diagrams from book what we use to study during

exams ( BDC, Vishram singh ) diagrams help a lot. Tests and VIVA can be conducted after completion of each topics which

would make the subject more lighter. We don’t need modular teaching, because it is not giving full detail about

the that particular chapter Give more importance for the anatomy museum The time must be allotted daily such that if we have any doubts, we can

easily ask them. In SGT, it is very difficult to ask questions since we cannot able to

remember doubts that arise whole week. So instead of SGT, you can allot daily 30 mins for discussion (or) asking doubts.

Might be a bit cases if the faculty provide us their PPT Require more internal assessment. We never wrote internal assessment on

topic head and neck as subjected to question in send up exam which makes

it difficult and we should be exposed to more different and clinical aspect questions

Genetics and Embryology needs improvement Better planning of teaching schedule / sequential teaching of topics Radiology and embryology needs more attention Head and neck , Neuroanatomy test very reused – should have been taught

properly More importance should be given to dissection students should be asked to

dissect more / touch cadaver more. We would have liked more revision classes

2. Department : Biochemistry

Like Best:

Staffs / Practical class and teaching / It is easy to read / Interesting / Lab / SGT Classes

It gives great knowledge skill to handle clinical condition The reaction are taught in a very understandable way Small group teaching are very useful Frequent assessment (Viva, MCQ) / competition (Power point presentation)

/ work done to take exercise from each subject. The way the department organizes things Compounds and cycles I like the subject very much It’s quite easy compared to other subjects Ramesh sir teaches very well and makes the subject look very easy Cycles are very interesting. HOD is best professor and he is the hero Some of the lectures are interesting. Doing poster of prepare it and we

learn something, I feel that it was best Certain lectures, SGT, MCQ pre and Post Test The slides are being sent to the students and frequent tests are conducted They all are very friendly, caring SGT is awesome Practical’s / integrated teachings, SGT session with task The innovative methods of teaching by the department faculties Faculty very invested in helping students learn, innovative methods of

teaching The chemistry ( molecules atoms ) which is in the biological human body i.e

And they are very

helpful Really class clinical postings – lot of patients explosive. Lecture classes are engaging Dr. Jha sir teaches very well. HOD teaches only on exam point of view. Nic e lecture glass with easy points Symposium / Clinical posting / Problem based learning Proper planning of classes Class teaching is superb

Need Improvement:

Some of the slides can be informative as they seem vague Less number of faculties and hence we can’t approach them properly as

they are also quite busy Less slides, more interaction / Teaching skills / integrated teaching Please take us to the operation theatre Can improve the teaching pattern more Lecture of some professor (KN Jha ) need to be simple More skills can be taught in practical classes The demo class need improvement No proper discussion / want more pictorial discussion that slides For 20 marks, we area reading a lot of portion. We want exams at the end

of each chapter, this will help us to read one chapter clearly rather than reading a lot portion in a Zig – Zag manner. Ask teachers to take with interest / Boring class

More videos would be useful Don’t mark students absent by asking questions Dr. Swathi in every class ask

questions and mark nearly 15 students absent even though they attend full class. This will make students dislike the subject.

They could have a better study plan. And integrated classes could be better. Upload all PPT / classes and lectures can be shortened according to UG

point of view

Sometimes, after the lecture classes – when I read the same chapter in the book – it seems that there is so much in the book. Partly it is because of parsons way of writings but it will be helpful if they cover something of everything in each chapter.

Small group teaching will be useful Exams must be conducted in a fair way Examinations must be conducted strictly . conducting exam and telling

answers is no use. Evaluation must be fair. A question must be connected by same professor

and not different professors as the expectations and evaluation differ Number of exams has to be more not just 3 for 1 year Lecture classes are just reading of slides is most class. We need case presentation of the topic before and after the topic Increase the practical class then theory class Clinical posting times can be increased so that we learn more on Opd basics Faculties are teaching very fast. Unable to follow in the class. Almost all

chapters are over within 5 months of starting the classes. Entire retina was covered in 3 lectures of 1 hour each. Slides uploaded for lectures can be more informative, rather than only pictures. Only cataract case was shown. No surgeries were whom to our batch

OT posting, need to see more cases other than cataract.

6. Department : Microbiology

Best Likes

Teaching/ Easy/ Everything/ Diagnosis Praveen Charles sir is simply the best. His classes are very informative,

engaging and fun. Teachers and subject Teaching is good/ SGT’s are good Integrated teaching – good Lecture classes are interesting It’s very interesting and this subject will help me to diagnose the disease Way of teaching/ staffs are really good and understand clearly. Practical teaching good Practical are taken well/ various aspects, living, symptoms of organism Practical teaching is good Doubts and quires are easily clarified with the teachers Applied microbiology practical classes awesome need more such applied sort of

exercises Practical SGT classes were very useful to us.

clear to the things what they to tell us. They didn’t stuff the subjects to us. Topics are fairly understandable. The schedule is updated regularly. We get

most of our exam into from this department

class. ( eg. Like Tuberculosis Class) Too many drugs are there to learn and it is too long We have one combined class and one class as separate batches we get half

of one lesson. A day and an entirely different topic the next day it’s difficult to follow.
