Lady is a healthy chunk now! She looks fantastic! It was an uphill battle and she had to be treated for heartworm too. Thanks Dr. Thomas for doing such an excellent job in treating her heartworms. Heartworms come when a dog is bitten by a mosquito. Make sure your dog gets monthly heartworm preventative pills eve-ry month all year. Talk to your vet-erinarian about it. Thank you Kim for being such a SUPER FOSTER MOM for Lady and her puppies and the trips to the vet offices.

The Animal Sanctuary
Society, Inc. is proud to be
a safe haven to animals.
We provide vet care, medi-
cine, surgeries, food, shel-
ter, & other necessities to
our animals until the day
they are adopted. We will
not euthanize an animal
because no one is adopt-
ing him or her by a cer-
tain time. This is possible
because of the generous
public donations & con-
tributions of people like
you.
Lady struggled to keep her eight pups alive even when she was close to death herself. Two pups died right after being rescued; they were in such bad shape with coccidia, intestinal worms and pooping blood. It was very sad! Six pups happily survived and are adopted into loving homes!

Animals act like flying missiles in an impact and
can not only hurt themselves but hurt their hu-
mans, too. Dogs that hang so far out the window
could leap out. The law allows NJSPCA officers to
pull drivers that they believe to be transporting
animals improperly.
Sadly, 100,000 dogs die each year falling from or
jumping out of pickup truck beds. A total of 10
states have passed laws requiring drivers to re-
strain any pets riding in open parts of a moving
vehicle. If you secure your pet in a crate or har-
ness so they can’t fall out of the truck bed, you
shouldn’t get in trouble from law enforcement.
The details vary state to state. Remember: Keep in
mind safety for you & your pet
while traveling. Also keep in mind weather
conditions: too hot or too cold! While harness-
es are the best way to keep your beloved pet
from going airborne in the unfortunate event
of an accident, there are many ways to make
pets safe. Keeping dogs out of the front seat is
a way to ensure that the driver can stay fo-
cused, making the ride safer for both furry and
human passengers. For animals that climb up
to the front seat even when they’re placed in
the back, consider securing them in a crate. If
your dog’s crate doesn’t fit in the car, you can
buy a barrier to keep them out of the front seat.
Julep, the Black Lab Gets an Emergency
Flight up Before Her Pups are Born
We saved her from a crowded shelter in the nick of time to save her life. We found out afterwards she was pregnant. Thanks so much to Pilots for Paws for getting her to us right away. Julep had a private four legged copilot. He was dressed in doggie ear muffs, and all to protect his ears from noise, since he copilots a lot when helping home-less animals. His ear gear is off in the pic-ture. If anyone wants to help with fostering pregnant Moms e-mail us at animalsanctu-arys @aol.com.
We also know a young woman that
was driving with her cat, and was
in a car accident. The car windows
crashed out, and the cat got lost.
That woman searched so very long
many times for her cat and couldn’t
find her. PLEASE READ THE ADVICE IN
THE PREVIOUS ARTICLE ABOVE TO PRE-
VENT FURTHER SUCH TRAGEDIES FROM
HAPPENING IN THE FUTURE!
Just recently, we have been getting
emails that someone in NJ was in a
car accident, and their beloved cat
is now missing out of the car. For
days, the pet parent is desperately
trying to find her cat and asking
for help sending out emails to res-
cues. IT IS SO HEARTBREAKING!
Buckle Up Your Pets: It’s The Law
Do you think dogs can fly? We know they can!

Thanks, foster mom Liz for coming
through to foster very pregnant,

These 4 cuties are hers.
Have you seen vehicles traveling with their
dogs sticking their heads out of the window
or sitting on their owner’s lap?
Not only isn’t this a safe way for a pet to
travel, but it’s illegal in New Jersey. New
Jersey has passed a law requiring drivers to
restrain pets inside their cars; this means that
pets can’t lean their heads out of windows or
sit in driver’s laps. In NJ, drivers with unre-
strained pets can receive a fine of $250-$1000,
or even disorderly offence under animal cru-
elty.

ready to travel safely in
their crates!

To the Dear People at Animal Sanctuary,
On January 27, 2009, we adopted an adorable Wire Haired Terrier from
Animal Sanctuary. Trooper (his name was originally Lucky) came to us
at age 10 just shy of his 11th birthday. We adopted him for my mother
who lived with us and was 91 at the time. When I first called about
Trooper, we thought that he was 6. When we were told he might be 8, I
was unsure if we wanted to adopt a dog that might not live very long.
The woman on the phone assured me that this dog might be the perfect
companion for my mom and that we should come to see him. Well, we
all fell in love with him at first sight and pet! Then we found out he was
10, and turning 11 on April 1st. But it did not matter!
Trooper was wonderful with all of us but a constant companion for my
mom. He slept next to her bed and followed her to the bathroom on
each of her nightly trips. At times my mom would ask me where he was.
We would laugh because he would be right behind her! He was such a
loving dog and we were so very lucky to have him. My mother passed
away at the age of 96 on January 24, 2014. Trooper followed 7 weeks
later on March 13, 2014. He was 3 weeks shy of his 16th birthday. My
mother’s biggest fear was that her beloved Trooper would die before her,
but he remained vigilant till the day she died at home.
I am sorry that I did not write this sooner, but doing it was much harder
than I thought. But I did want to thank you so much for the enjoyment
Trooper brought to my mom and our family.
Sincerely, Rosemary Thompson

True Friends
Even when they’re gone, they never
leave our side.
The love in our hearts lasts forever.
Luna & foster mom, Liz!
Luna & foster dog Mimi
Luna & Julep
Pablo was 2 years old when I adopted him from ASSI.
He was very sweet and remained that way until the
day he passed. Pablo had a very good life with me.
He was 13 years old when he passed and I had the
pleasure of having 8 years with him. He would wake
me up every morning to eat. He was my alarm clock.
He loved being outside but I would not let him go out.
Although at times, he would sneak out when I would
come home with my hands full. He was a very smart
cat! I miss Pablo very much and always will. He was
my best furry friend.
Liz, one of our dear foster parents, lost her beloved Luna to cancer. Liz was so
terrific with Luna, making sure she was comfortable as she battled her cancer.
Luna was rescued from a shelter after being given up twice and having puppies.
She finally found a loving home. She was such a great companion, she never
left her owner’s side. Luna had two hip replacements and a bout with cancer
where she had to undergo chemotherapy. She had arthritis in her joints but
she never stopped wagging her tail . She was always willing to give up her bed
and food dish for foster pups her mom took in . Luna lived to old age being
loved and giving love.

Keep your pet safe & healthy !
Flea and Tick preventative should be used on all animals year round. Dogs can get Lyme disease from a
tick bite just like people. Try to keep animals out of long grass, bushes, and leaf piles and be sure to
check your pet thoroughly every day. Ticks can be as small as a little dot. If a dog eats a flea, it can get
tape worm from it.
Raven and her five kittens were saved just
before they were going to be euthanized at
an overcrowded shelter. One kitten had a
serious underlying problem and had to be
euthanized at the ER even after being at
the vet’s office and receiving great care
from foster mom, Liz; who tried her best to
nurture the kitten following doctors in-
structions and providing it with lots of lov-
ing care. She carried the kitten all over
the house with her to be sure it was safe
and loved. We are so appreciative of Liz’s
kind loving heart that she shared with this
little angel. The good news is that Raven
and her four other kittens have been
adopted into loving homes.

Pepper gave great joy and is sadly
missed!
An older couple adopted Pepper from us years ago.
She died several weeks ago. The couple has called us
and emailed us several times about their deep sad
loss. They informed us she gave them great joy.
They miss her so very much.

there was no more room for him at an over-
crowded shelter. And look at him now! We are
so proud of him and his pet parent. They do
such good deeds together helping children and
adults!
Tucker has a TDI canine good citizen and Ther-
apy Dog Certification!

Our Dogs Help Veterans with
Post Traumatic Stress
We knew Dallas aka Sarge was an exceptional dog and when a local organization, who we
knew and trusted, needed a trained service dog to help a veteran with PTS, we highly recommended
Sarge. He went through a vigorous six month service dog training. We were thrilled and so proud of
Sarge at his graduation ceremony, where we met his new family and veteran who now has him as his
service dog and pet.
Sarge means the world to the veteran who suffered from PTS. The Iraqi war had taken its toll
on the veteran. Because of the help of Sarge, the veteran is able to work and help other veterans in
the city. Sarge goes to work everyday with him. At the ceremony, the veteran was in tears, especially
remembering at the beginning of the war, a little Iraqi girl who waved a stuffed toy (she got from the
American soldiers - Americans from home would send toys for the Iraqi children) in the middle of the
road when they were in the truck. The little girl warned her American friends of danger ahead. After-
wards, it was realized by the military, that it was not safe for the children to befriend them because
of terrible consequences for the children.
Presently, Sarge also helps the veteran shop in stores and will go in front or behind the veter-
an if someone is coming too close making it possible for the veteran to be able to go into stores. Thank
you and lots of paw hugs to you Sarge.
