letter from

the director

Dear FriendsOf Happy Trails,

Re-inspired. To me that’s areally thought provoking word. To meit means that you were once enthusi-astic about making a difference.Maybe making a difference meantgetting involved in some way withanimal rescue, but often day to dayfrustrations or through the out-of-sight-out-of-mind reality of life, youlose your sense of inspiration. Youget distracted by other things. Youhave good intentions but maybe youdidn’t make time to attend afundraiser or you forgot what adifference your support makes to theanimals. Let us re-inspire you.

Allow me to introduce you tosome of the people who are makingan incredible difference in the lives ofabused, neglected and abandonedanimals — people who choose theavenue they think will be mostbeneficial to the animals and thesanctuary, and the thing that will fit inmost easily with their own lives. Ibelieve that getting to know them willre-inspire you to get involved, tosupport and donate, to sponsor, toadopt, to join the internship program,to spread the word, to dedicatetime to a committee, to make adifference in some way in the lifeof a mistreated creature whorelies on us for care, kindnessand compassion.

If you are re-inspired tomake a difference, let us know. With everyone working together,we are making a huge differencein the world of farm animalabuse through education, prosecution, and creatingawareness that the food, clothing and product choices we

Giving Tree ProgramGearing Up For

The HolidaysIf you have a little extra space in

your store or office and would like tosupport Happy Trails, consider

participating in the 2013 Giving TreeProgram, which begins the weekend

after Thanksgiving and ends theweekend after Christmas.

A Happy Trails representative

would set up a small Christmas tree

in your retail store or high traffic

office area, complete with ornaments

featuring beautiful photos of the

rescued animals. If you own a retail

store, items from our wish list would

be marked on the back of the orna-

ments. Shoppers can then buy these

items from your store to donate to

the sanctuary. Customers can take

the ornaments home with them

to proudly hang on their own

tree as a thank you.

If your business is an office, the

ornaments would have items listed

on them that workers could purchase

elsewhere and then bring back into

the office. A Happy Trails representa-

tive would stop by once a week

during the Giving Tree Program to

pick up any items that are being

donated. A complete list of busi-

nesses participating in this year’s

program will be featured in the next

newsletter. For more information, contact Amy at 330-296-5914.

make affect the lives of animals.

Who re-inspires me when it’sbeen a long day, when I’ve seensome really bad things on a rescue, when I get frustrated with a courtcase, or when we lose a furry orfeathered friend who I thought wecould save? The people on the frontcover and many, many others likethem who support our work, whojump in and help, who want to makea difference. You, and everyone whosupports Happy Trails, are myheroes and the people who re-inspireme daily.

With kindness and compassionfor all animals,

Annette FisherExecutive Director

P.S. I’d also like to extend a verysincere and heartfelt thank you toeveryone who sent notes, cards anddonations for the animals in memoryof my mom who passed away inFebruary. I appreciate each andevery one of you . Your thoughtful-ness was overwhelming and I amgrateful.

We Can Make A LittleGo A Long Way Baby!

Teetonka, abandoned in AshtabulaCounty, is a special needs pot bellypig because she has a conditioncalled “mule foot”. A pigs normally hassplit hooves, basically two toes oneach foot. A mule-foot pig hasdeformed hooves where the split inthe hooves did not form and the hoofappears to more like a horse’s hoof. This causes other leg deformities andearly arthritis in the joints of the leg.Teetonka is sweet, loving, and gentle, and her Native American namemeans, “talks too much”, for Teetonkais always oinking about something.

RECENT RESCUE

3,000 spent laying hens were rescued froma factory farm where they lived packed inbattery cages their entire lives and weredestined to be gassed to death. 240 ofthem were brought to Happy Trails, where they experienced grass, dirt baths, warm sunshine and blue skies for the firsttime in their lives. We have already placedabout 150 of them in caring homes.

Ten bucks might not seem to gotoo far these days. We easily throwout a ten at a fast food restaurant andare lucky if we get more than twoand a half bucks in change. A lot offolks absolutely LOVE Happy Trailsand the work we do, but are hesitantto donate because they don’t think asmall donation goesvery far. “Whatcan you do with tendollars,” oneperson asked me,“when the cost tocare for the animalsis so great?”

Well, I’m hereto tell you that youwould be amazedat what we can dowith ten dollars!

If everyonereceiving ournewsletter was kindenough to send inten bucks, wewould have about$50,000 this year toapply to animalcare. So don’t befooled for onemoment intothinking that asmall donationdoesn’t matter.

What canHappy Trails buyfor ten dollars? Here are a fewitems just off the top of my head: acontainer of SWAT (a pink goo thatwe put on wounds and on the tips ofears to keep flies and maggotsaway); a heat lamp bulb to help keepvery thin animals or animals withoutfur warm during bitter cold tempera-tures; two bales of hay which willfeed one emaciated horse for fourdays; a fly mask for a horse who justhad eye surgery: one tube of pastedewormer, which needs to beadministered to horses about everyeight to ten weeks; five rolls of vetwrap, a bandaging material for

animals who have injured legs thatneed to be wrapped; two bales ofstraw, which will provide drybedding for about four pot belly pigsfor the entire week; a bottle ofsolution to rinse out the eyes ofanimals who have eye trauma; and acontainer of delousing powder to

delouse rescuedchickens, ducks,geese and turkeys.

Put TWOten dollar dona-tions together, and we can payfor: hoof trimsfor one horse(hooves needtrimmed every sixweeks); a bottleof Banamine forcolic emergen-cies; a smallcontainer of liquidjoint supplementfor arthritichorses; a bottle ofMeloxicam, which is a pill-form of a jointsupplement forsenior citizen potbelly pigs; a newset of goat hooftrimmers; enoughtubes of caulkingto repair a leakybarn roof; twotons of gravel toprovide drier

areas for some of the muddieranimal yards. And THREE tendollar donations put together willget us a bottle of Bute, a type ofhorse aspirin, used to treat inflam-mation; a heated water bucket; threerolls of gauze bandaging; severalsheets of plywood to repair ananimal shelter and one gallon ofpaint to paint that shelter. And thelist could go on and on.

A ten dollar donation canmean the world of difference to arescued animal.

Please know that a ten dollardonation, combined with other tendollar donations, is what keeps usgoing. Happy Trails operates onprivate donations.

Just as you rely on us to dropeverything and leave at amoment’s notice when a humaneofficer calls needing help with anabused farm animal; to sit in thebarn all night with a sick horse; tocarry animals too weak to standup on their own, up a hill and intoa waiting rescue trailer, we too, rely on you to make these rescuespossible.

Together we are a great team, you and Happy Trails. Pleaseconsider sending a minimum tendollar donation in today, knowingthat you are making a tremendousdifference!

It’s true. Big things do come insmall packages. Big things areaccomplished at Happy Trails withall of us working together — witheveryone playing a small part.

Do You Really Get How High 16’ Is?Check Out Happy Trails New Storage Building(built by ALL volunteers!)

Thanks to several very kind donors,Happy Trails just completed constructionon our new storage building. This struc-ture will allow us to safely store hay, straw, and sawdust for winter. The dimensions ofthe building are 24’ wide by 32’ long by 16’tall in the front. This height will allow ourdump truck to back into the barn and easilydump loads of sawdust. Donations enabledus to purchase the lumber and metalsheeting, and an all-volunteer crew con-structed the building in about six busyweekends. The volunteer constructioncrew included hard workers Kevin Bragg,Bentley Hudson, Tony Pappas, WalterShields, Keith Lepley, Alex Hale, GaryJaffe, Jason Wolboldt, Carl Ehmann andTom Ehmann.

The last step to complete thebuilding is to pour the concrete for the floor. The cost of the concrete is generously beingdonated by Barb Miller and Pete and DonnaLillo. And a special thanks to John Rock ofRock Concrete for giving us such a reason-able price on the concrete.

We are extremely grateful to everyonewho made this project possible!

Can’t take a rescued horse home?Become a Guardian Angel for an abused or neglected horse

through our monthly sponsorship program.

• Red

The horses featured here are in the Happy Trails Foster Home Program. This means that they are being housed and cared fortemporarily at a private home, usually for a specific reason. Often a foster home may be able to give an individual horse morepersonal attention, address specific needs, or work with it regarding training and trail riding. Foster homes may generously donate

the use of their facilities and barn space, big pastures, and devote their time to the tedious daily care of a big, rescued animal. However, Happy Trails is still reponsible to pay for vet bills, grain, hay, bedding, hoof trimming, vaccinations,

teeth floating and deworming for all the horses in foster care until we find a permanent adoptive home for them.

So if you love horses but might not have room to adopt one and take it home with you, please consider joining the Happy Trails Guardian Angel Sponsorship Program

to help us care for the rescued horses in foster care.

This is one good example of whyhands-on contact is beneficial to theanimals as well as calming to the peopleworking with them. During a recentbelly-rubbing session with beautifulJolie, a pot belly pig, we discovered amass under her stomach area that wassoft and lumpy located near one of herteats. Since several different animalshad a variety of medical needs, a tripwas scheduled to OSUVMC (Ohio StateUniversity Veterinary Medical Center) inColumbus, where our group cost wouldsave us money in the long run.

It was a scare when Jolie wasindeed diagnosed with, well, basicallybreast cancer. Luckily we had caught itin time, and the vet said surgery wouldbe her best option.

We had already included Dulce,Jolie’s best pig friend in the wholeworld, to OSU with her on this trip formoral support. The two dearly loveeach other. We decided to leave Dulceat OSU with Jolie during her ordeal tohelp keep her spirits up. The two shared

Jolie Thrives After Cancer Surgery

a stall at the vet hospital and instantlywon the hearts of the staff members andvet students alike.

Surgery went very well, and thevet believes that she was able toremove all the cancer. The twoaffected teats did have to be removed,so Jolie had a partial mastectomy. Jolie(and Dulce) spent the following week inrecovery at OSU to make sure that shedidn’t get an infection. The cancernodules and gland were submitted forhistopathology, and the cancer type wasdetermined to be adenacarcinoma.

Today I am happy to report, thatJolie is cancer free! This little piggyloves life SO very much, has tons offans, and we are honored to have her atHappy Trails. She is always the firstanimal to meet and greet visitors, tocome over to see how your day is going, and to share her beautiful smile.

Thank you to everyone whodonated toward Jolie’s surgery andmedical expenses, which came to atotal of $622.45 (plus gas expenses

which added $100). Dulce’s boarding feecame to $102.50. We didn’t quite raiseenough to cover all the expenses associ-ated with Jolie’s care and the trips to andfrom the hospital. If her story touches yourheart or you can relate to Jolie as acancer survivor, maybe consider making adonation in her honor to help with the restof her medical expenses and continuedcare. Everyone who donates to her carewill be invited to meet this very special pigin person.

The measure is part of an international campaign toreduce the consumption of meat for health and environmentalreason.Pamer, Melissa. “‘Meatless Mondays’: LA Urges Residents to TurnVegetarian One Day a Week.” U.S. News. November 10, 2012.Accessed: November 26, 2012.

FACT3. Several researchers argue that a vegetarian diet can feedmore people than a meat-based diet. For example, approxi-mately 20,000 pounds of potatoes can be grown on one acreof land. Comparatively, only around 165 pounds of beef can beproduced on 1 acre of land.Robbins, John. 1987. Diet for a New America. Tiburon, CA: StillpointPublishing.

FACT4. The grain fed to the 7 billion livestock in the U.S. could feed800 million people. Approximately 25 gallons of water areneeded to produce 1 pound of wheat. Around 2,500 gallons ofwater are needed to produce 1 pound of meat. Many vegetar-ians argue that more people eating a meat-free diet wouldlower the strain that meat production puts on the environment.Robbins, John. 1987. Diet for a New America. Tiburon, CA: StillpointPublishing.

FACT5. The number of animals killed for meat every hour in the U.S.is 500,000. (Let me repeat that for you. The number of animalskilled for meat every hour in t he U.S. is 500,000. Every hour.)Cox, Peter. 2002. You Don’t Need Meat. New York, NY: ThomasDunne Books.

FACT6. Studies show that a vegetarian diet could feed more peoplethan a meat-based diet. For example, only around 20% of thecorn grown in the United States is eaten by people, with about80% of the corn eaten by livestock. Additionally, approximately95% of the oats grown in the U.S are eaten by livestock.Studies show that the number of people who could be fed bythe grain and soybeans that are currently fed to U.S. livestockis approximate 1,300,000,000.Robbins, John. 1987. Retired WithTime On YourHands?Happy Trails just might be the perfectsolution to getting you re-inspiredabout making a difference!

There are a lot of ways that retirees canget involved with animal rescue. If you

can fit a petporter orsmall animalcrate intoyour vehicle, you can helpdrive animalsto and fromvet appoint-ments, fosterand adoptivehomes, andother animalshelters.Physicalactivity thatyou can do atyour ownpaceincludesraking theyards, mowinggrass, cleaningwater bowlsand cleaningcobwebs out

of the barns. Administrative workincludes helping out in the office or thegift shop, meeting and greeting guests,or assisting with sanctuary tours duringtour season. Maybe you’re a peopleperson and would like to help plan fund-raisers or participate in communityevents.

If you are a retiree and would todedicate time to volunteer in animalrescue, give us a call at 330-296-5914.

Who Re-Inspires Us? (Front Cover)

Front cover (clockwise) fromtop center:Sarah Kay, a student at the Universityof Akron, is doing an Animal WelfareInternship with Happy Trails, and isresponsible for the goat and sheepbarn among other areas. Here shevisits with one of her teachers,Odessa, a beautiful rescued goat whohad to have one eye removed due tosevere neglect. Sarah re-inspires usdaily with her dedication to theprogram and to the animals, and in herenthusiasm for learning and providingtop level care for the rescued animals.

Julie Shuman is a new adoptivemom, and she has opened her heartand home to welcome a big pastureornament into her life. Editon wassaved from being purchased by themeat buyers at the Mt. Hope Auctionlast October. He was 20 years old andpromoted as a “good buggy horse”,but due to his age, no one wanted himand he was destined for slaughter. Henow has a new career of being afriend to Julie’s other horse, Super.Julie re-inspires us by being a re-minder that there are caring, compas-sionate people out there who arewilling to adopt senior citizen animalsand expect nothing of them in return.

Amy Wagar-Cinch is Happy Trailsnewest staff member, handling animalsponsorships, the holiday Giving TreeProgram, promoting sanctuary tours, and helping out in the office and giftshop. Amy re-inspires us with herdedication to leading a vegan life-styleand making the conscious choice tomake sure that no animals sufferbecause of her choice of nutrition, clothing or household products.

Carl Ehmann has become a die-hardvolunteer at the sanctuary, and whenhe works, he gives the animals hisvery best efforts! Carl re-inspires usbecause he is a volunteer who is trulyworking for the needs of the animals. He has no personal agenda, nothinghe wants to accomplish for himself, and no matter what the animals needs

are, he is there to help them and maketheir lives better.

Pam Seltz drove to Happy Trails fromPennsylvania to adopt two preciouslittle white hens. A lot of people mightask, can’t you get chickens locally?Well, Pam could, but she wanted tomake sure that she opened her hometo rescued animals, and these hensneeded her. To see people like Pamdrive from far away to adopt hensshowed us that people will indeed gothat extra mile for animals, andworking with Pam was not only re-inspiring, but very heartwarming!

Tony Pappas was getting soaked inthe pouring rain balanced high up ontop of the new storage building, hanging off the side as he carefullyplaced a metal screw into the sheetmetal and drilled it into place. “Are youhaving fun yet?” I joked with him.Anyone else would have mutteredabout the dropping temperatures andthe soggy clothing and the slipperyand dangerous trusses. Not Tony. Witha big, typical Tony smile, he thoughtfor a minute and then replied,“Strangely enough, I am!” As a HappyTrails volunteer, Tony enjoys everyminute of the work he does for theanimals, and he constantly tells ushow much he is learning in theprocess. Talk about someone who canre-inspire you on a bad day!

Melissa DelSignore is a student atYoungstown State University, and isenrolled in a marketing internship withHappy Trails. Melissa is determinedthat she will help us promote thecovered arena campaign and willmake this very special project happenfor the rescued animals at HappyTrails. She is full of drive, ambition, enthusiasm, and is devoted to thecause. Her energy is contagious andshe plans to raise funds for non-profitorganizations as her career. Makingother people’s dreams come true isher own dream. How about that for re-inspiring us?

Ilona Urban is a retiredAkron Public Schoolteacher who takesrescued animals toschools and nursinghomes for special visits, gives tours of thesanctuary, transportsanimals to and from thevet, and helps out atcommunity events. Wehave no idea what wewould do without her!

Planned Giving • Wills • Trusts

PLANNED GIVING OPTIONS:

Gift of cashGifts of cash provide an income taxdeduction for the year in which the giftwas given.

Wills and bequestsBequests can be made in a new will, oran existing will can be easily amendedto include a bequest to Happy Trails. Anunrestricted bequest is one that allowsHappy Trails to direct your gift where itwill have the greatest impact. A re-stricted bequest allows you to designatewhat you would like the gift to be usedfor.

Gifts of StockGifts of stock can be made in two ways. You can call your financial advisor andtransfer shares of stock directly fromyour account to Happy Trails, or you cangive stock certificates. You will receive atax deduction for the full amount of thecurrent value of the gift on the day onwhich the gift was given, and if the stockhas appreciated significantly, you willavoid paying the capital gains taxes dueif you were to sell the stock.

Charitable Remainder TrustA Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT)enables you to give a highly appreciatedasset, such as stock or vacation home,

to a trust for which Happy Trails is thebeneficiary (or one of several beneficia-ries). In the trust document, youdesignate what income you want toreceive from the trust. The CRT sells thegifted assets and reinvests the proceedsto provide you with income as stated inthe trust document. You do not pay thecapital gains tax on the sale of theappreciated asset, and you receive animmediate tax deduction for your gift tothe trust. As a beneficiary of the CRT,Happy Trails receives the gift, or aportion of the gift, upon the death ofthose indicated in the trust document.

Charitable Lead TrustA Charitable Lead Trust (CLT) alsoallows you to gift a highly appreciatedasset, such as a stock or a vacationhome, to a trust for which Happy Trailsis the beneficiary, or one of the benefi-ciaries. With a CLT, however, thebeneficiary first receives distributions fora number of years as stated in the trustagreement. At the end of the stated timeperiod, the remainder of the trust isdistributed to whoever is designated inthe trust document. Because theultimate recipients of the trust proceedsmust wait a number of years beforereceiving the gift, the amount of the giftis calculated in a manner that could beextremely favorable to the donor. This

Planned giving is a way to include Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary in youroverall estate and financial plan. Depending on your giving strategy, there couldbe immediate or future tax benefits for you.

strategy maybe veryeffective inminimizing or eliminating the gift taxesthat would be associated with anoutright gift.

Life InsuranceIf you would like to give an insurancepolicy directly to Happy Trails, andwould like it to qualify as a gift with theIRS, you will need to make Happy Trailsthe owner and the beneficiary of thepolicy. If the policy is paid up, yourcharitable tax deduction is usually thecost basis or the replacement value ofthe policy, whichever is less. If the policyis not paid up, the premiums that youcontinue to pay on the policy would alsoqualify for charitable deductions. This isan extremely effective way to leverageyour gift to Happy Trails. Depending onyour individual situation, incorporatingan Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust(ILIT) into your plan may also bebeneficial.

We are happy to discuss yourcharitable objectives with you. If youhave questions, please contactHappy Trails representative AttorneyAlan G. Segedy at 330.434.1166 or viaemail at [email protected]

ANIMAL SPONSORSHIPSMany animals in the Happy Trails rescue program would greatly benefit from the support of asponsor. Some have special needs. Some are more difficult to place in permanent homes

and reside at the sanctuary for quite a while. Animal sponsor-ships are a great way to show you care. You can give ananimal sponsorship as a gift for a birthday, holiday, wedding oranniversary, or any other special occasion. You may just wantto sponsor an animal whose story tugs at your heart strings asyour own personal sponsorship. Sponsors, and the folks whoreceive sponsorships as a gift, are invited to sponsor daysthroughout the year to meet their sponsored animal up close.Let Happy Trails Animal Sponsorship Representative AmyWagar-Cinch help you pick out the animal who is right for you.

Return to Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary5623 New Milford Rd. Ravenna, Oh 44266

Do you want to stay up allnight in the cold barnmonitoring the starvinghorse that just arrived...

...or do you want us to?

If you’re like most people, you appreciatethe animal rescue services provided byHappy Trails but you certainly wouldn’twant to see or handle the cases that wedeal with daily.

There’s the pig who came in with acidburns and open wounds over 80% of herback. There was a white goat who was soemaciated and weak that she couldn’t evenstand up, and though we did everythingpossible, we still lost her a week later. Thenthere was the hen that had a large gapinghole in her back where she was beingcannibalized by other chickens when theywere locked in a barn and had nothing elseto eat. (By the way, she survived and madea complete recovery.) And what about theturkey found in a ditch who had beenattacked by stray dogs? She was discov-ered on a brutally hot summer day and thissweet turkey had maggots crawling out ofher wounds which we had to treat. (She toohealed and was adopted.)

I am going to go out on a limb here andguess that most of you wouldn’t want to bethe person to tend to the animals describedabove, but I also believe that you appreciatethe fact that we do tend to them here atHappy Trails. With that thought, pleaseconsider becoming a monthly donor.Even a $10 a month pledge makes our workpossible, so together we can continue tosave lives — us from the field, and you fromthe comforts of your own home.

Together, we make a great team!

Our MissionCovered Arena Campaign Takes The First Steps

We are still working on raising funds toconstruct a covered arena for therescued horses to recover from leg andeye injuries in a dry, safe environmentunder cover from rain and snow.

We continue to move forward with faithbelieving this will happen, even though wedon’t have “the full staircase” quite yet. Infact, we are so certain that this project willtake place, that we have begun removingthe old sand riddled with stones out of thearena to make way for new, safer footing. There is a lot of information to share aboutthis particular project and why it’s crucial to

the recovery programs and the sustainablefuture of the sanctuary.

Please take time to check outthe details on our website atwww.happytrailsfarm.org.

Corporate sponsorship opportunitiesare available for businesses wishing toshow their support . We would be honoredto partner with sponsors who believe inour work and understand our passion forcontinuing to improve the animal rescueand rehabilitation services provided byHappy Trails.
