I have always believed that today’s second or third team players are tomorrow’s club stalwarts,

secretaries and fixtures organisers. It won’t be the schoolboy star fly-half who serves the post-match food behind the counter; he’ll still be in the changing room applying the hair gel. Those people who keep their local sports clubs going through unheralded hard work and commitment are the lifeblood of communities and their passion is borne from the camaraderie that comes through playing sport as a young person, rather than how talented they were at any particular game. It is why it is so important to get everyone enjoying the sport they

play, irrespective of the level they reach. Physiques change, bodies grow, skills develop, speed quickens and pupils of all ages find things they are good at that will stand them in solid stead for later life. Mrs Murray gave an excellent presentation about the sports department on Monday evening, a pdf version of which accompanies this Bulletin – please do read it. She outlined the philosophy of the school’s approach to sport and what we are doing to create an environment in which everyone feels

valued for the sport they can offer. Marrying up the conflicting ideals of giving opportunities to all, while simultaneously developing the elite performers is not straightforward and we may not always get it right, but the intentions are there and we are laying firm foundations with timetable changes, fixture and curriculum reviews, improved planning of activities and clubs and more emphasis on skill development and pupil outcomes rather than the result of any particular match.

There are very few schools that offer table-tennis like St Andrew’s Prep and our dominance of the female section of the IAPS national table-tennis competition continued last Saturday, as we swept clean the medals in the U13 competition as well as claiming fifth, sixth and seventh positions too. Megan Linden won gold for the second successive year, pipping Grace

Watkins once again in a closely-fought final. Amelia Tait bagged the bronze. There were no medalists on the boys’ side but there were some spirited efforts with Jaime Ruigomez (U13) and Sam Bordass (U11) both progressing through to the last sixteen. Well played to all and my thanks reach out to Mr Reed and Mr May for their coaching and encouragement.

Up on Top Floor, the Juniors girls were very excited about their first rounders matches against Vinehall this week. Whether it was the actual playing or the excitement of a coach journey, either way there were squeals of delight throughout yesterday afternoon. Meanwhile, the boys ventured to the beach to learn about, and drink from, the Holy Well. And back in the classrooms, the tadpoles are sprouting tiny legs, the sunflowers are germinating

and spring most definitely seems to be here.

Gig Night at St Andrew’s was a great success!

Yesterday evening, we held our first ‘gig night’ in the Richardson. Slightly less structured than some of our more formal concerts, there was no diminishing of quality in what was a varied and interesting programme. I often talk about the bravery required to perform on stage and to sing some cappella takes real guts as well as talent. With the rock band closing the show it dawned on me that I would have paid good money to see professional bands who were not as good. Well done to all!

This morning we welcomed Sharon Girling OBE into the school to talk to the pupils and parents about the complexities of staying safe online. Having served in the police, Sharon was at the forefront of a national and international response to online child abuse and developed the processes and procedures that led to the creation of CEOP. It concerns me that so many young people use imessage, WhatsApp or other forms of social media as their main form of communication rather than face to face dialogue, in the mistaken belief that ‘group chat’ is more profitable. On the contrary, it seems to me that it is more superficial, comments are less considered and there is more potential for realities to be distorted and misinterpreted. Just look at the Exeter University case this week. Social media is here to stay so Sharon Girling’s talks today enabled the pupils to understand how they can create an online identity which does not compromise their wellbeing now or in the future. It was eye-opening stuff as the parents who were there will testify. We have tried to capture the essence of our great school along with our fabulous seaside location and we hope you appreciate the stunning photography, crisp lines and clean layout. I would like to publicly thank the marketing team and TWK for the huge amount of effort put in to get it to this stage. With the sun shining, it promises to be a very enjoyable bank holiday weekend. I do hope the pupils can rest and re-energise over the exeat. May the fourth be with you!

Tommo’s Tales ‘Boarding school children dominate the world of work because they’re not in front of screens at home’. This was the bold statement issued by a current headmaster and chairman of the Boarding School’s Association (BSA), Martin Reader, as he addressed head teachers at their annual boarding conference this week. The opportunity for boarders to have extra time to pursue their passions, whether it be spending more time in the music school mastering a musical instrument, refining their shooting technique, participating in meaningful academic or revision sessions, or having the time for more coaching on the sports field, offers boarders an opportunity to spend more time throughout each day engaging in purposeful activities. Moreover, Mr Reader also suggested that the chances boarders get to engage in real face-to-face social time, rather than virtual socialising after school and at weekends mean that they are continuingly developing critical lifelong skills. I am pleased to say that at St Andrew’s we have been adopting these strategies for the last three years. Screen time has been limited and more emphasis is placed on developing our boarders’ social and emotional intelligence. When boarders do have their electronics, they use them productively to contact friends and family which is a critical ingredient to ensure their happiness and wellbeing. Boarding numbers at St Andrew’s continue to grow by the term (as does our reputation) and with numbers exceeding fifty on most evenings in Colstocks, our multicultural environment boarding provision is more popular than ever. The Colstocks residents had a wonderful trip to London last Sunday to visit Madame Tussauds and Shrek’s Adventure. The chance to get up close to Donald Trump, Beyoncé, The Royal Family, Morgan Freeman and David Beckham, to mention but a few, as well as having the opportunity to be a judge on The Voice caused great excitement among the group. A trip to McDonald’s capped off a wonderful day. And so, with exeat upon us, the boarders head off for a long weekend to be reunited with their families or to spend time with guardians. New friendships have blossomed and the Colstocks residents will depart with many anecdotes from the first three weeks of term etched firmly in the front of their minds Congratulations to Ignacio Migoya Guinea, this week’s recipient of Tommo’s Trophy, for the positive way in which he has become a member of Colstocks boarding house and the way in which he has made an effort to become friends with all other boarders. Taking Children Home After Matches While the school would like to take a pragmatic approach to taking pupils home after matches, it is important that it takes the right action to ensure that all safeguarding protocols are followed. With this in mind we would like to ask parents to follow these guidelines:

1. A parent/carer is welcome to take their own child home after a match, after signing them out

2. If you would like your child to be taken home by another parent after a match, please contact the school office 24 hours in advance.

3. If, in an emergency, a parent requires another parent to take their child home, but no prior email has been sent, the teacher in charge of the team will request that contact is made with the parents, before permission is granted.

4. Unless these guidelines are followed, children who are not picked up at the venue of a match, will be brought back to school to be picked up.

The U13 girls cleared up all three medals, with Amelia Tait taking the bronze and, after a very close game in the final, Grace Watkins narrowly losing 2 - 1 to Megan Linden, who is national U13 girls champion for the second year running. Congratulations to the rest of the team for some brilliant individual performances.

Free netball training for parents and staff of

St Andrew’s

St Andrew’s Prep is teaming up with Roselands Netball Club and we are delighted to have the club training here on our netball courts, over the summer. As captain of the first team Mrs Murray has also secured some free sessions for any St Andrew’s parents or staff that would like to get back to netball and join a fun and friendly club. Roselands Netball Club is always looking for new or experienced players to come along to train or even join their squads. Roselands currently have three squads in the Eastbourne netball league that play regular matches on Thursday evenings. Whether it be just for fitness, improving your netball skills or an opportunity to get back into playing netball competitively, we offer expert training in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Off the back of such an amazing performance by England at the recent Commonwealth Games, why not get back into netball at St Andrew’s for free? It will be on every Tuesday evening from 7pm to 9pm at the St Andrew’s netball courts, or the Goodwin Sports Hall if it’s raining.

Ultimate Activity Camps offer exciting holiday day camps with over 40 activities every week delivered by engaging and enthusiastic staff, who will instruct and encourage children aged four to 14 years to try new activities and make new friends – and naturally have lots of fun.
