Introduction

Cornelius Ward Savage was the son of Sarah (Sally) Mary Friend and

Robinson T. Savage (Jr.). He was born in the Sang Run of the Western most part of MD

on Jan 12, 1824 and lived there until passing away May 5, 1893. He was named after his

maternal great grandfather Cornelius Ward, a Revolutionary War Veteran, who operated

a gristmill in Friendsville, MD. Cornelius was the grandson of John Friend Jr. (1764 to

1849) and Elizabeth Ward (1778 to 1845), the daughter of Cornelius Ward, and the great

grandson of John Friend Sr. (1728 to Aft 1808), the patriarch of the Allegany/ Garrett

County MD Friend Family. Cornelius married Mary A. “Polly” Friend on December 12,

1845. Mary was the daughter of John Simpson Friend, granddaughter of Gabriel Friend1

and great granddaughter of John Friend Sr.2 Cornelius and Mary had at least nineteen

children. Some of these children and their descendants would live on in Western MD

while others would travel, making new homes throughout the United States and beyond.

This book is a compilation of the far-reaching stories of this family. It is dedicated to the

their memory in the hopes of preserving a very small portion of their lives.

Garrett County Maryland Land Records Book 26 pp. 164-166 At the request of Sherman G. Savage, this deed was recorded Oct 29th, 1894 at 11 oclock a.m. This deed, made this 20th day of October in the year 1894 by and between Martha A. Sliger and Lucian Sliger, her husband, Bertha A. _______ and ________ her husband, Sophia K. Abernathy and Isaac W. Abernathy, her husband, Mary E. Casteel and Edward N. Casteel, her husband, Melissa E. Cross and William R. Cross, her husband and Tresa A. Dewitt and Lafayette Dewitt, her husband, Orval C. Savage and Victoria Savage, his wife being part of the heirs and descendants of Cornelius W. Savage late of Garrett County deceased, as parties of the first part and Sherman G. Savage and Samuel R. Savage being also sons of the said Cornelius W. Savage as parties of the second part. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred and fifty dollars, current in hand paid to each of the aforesaid heirs according to their respective interests, the said parties of the first part do hereby grant, sell and convey unto the said parties of the second part as tenants in common, share and share alike, all their respective right, title interest and estate, both at law and in equity which they hold and have inherited in the real estate as well as personal property of which the said Cornelius W. Savage died, seized and possessed, situated and being in Garrett County described as follows to wit: Beginning for the same at a stone planted at the end of the first line of lot numbered fourteen hundred and seventy seven (ML 1477) and on the East side of the drain of the old Spring and about four perches below said old Spring and running thence (1) South 32 ¼ degrees East 18 perches to a stone (2) North 88 ½ degrees East 32 perches to a stone, (3) North 18 ½ degrees East 20 perches to a stone (4) South 72 degrees East 29 perches to a _______ (5) North 10 degrees East 5 ½ perches to a stone (6) South 83 degrees East 113 perches to a stake standing on the given line of Lot Number 4096 (ML 4096), then reversing said given line (7) South 12 degrees West 17 perches to the beginning of Lot Number 4097 (ML 4097), the reversing the given line of said lot (8) South 2 degrees West 40 perches to Hoye’s fence and with said fence to the third line of said Lot Number 4097 and reversing said third line (9) North 88 degrees West 82 perches to a stake standing at the end of the second line of said Lot Number 4097, then (10) South 2 degrees West 48 perches to the second line of Lot Number 1484, then (11) South 58 degrees West 35 perches to a stake and stone pile standing at the end of the third line of the part of Western Territory deeded by William W. the said Cornelius W. Savage, under the Will of his father, Robinson Savage, deceased and described in deeds from Amos W. Savage and his wife dated the 26th day of November 1870 and recorded in Liber H.R. No. 33, folio 73 one of the Land Records of Allegany County. Also all of their right and interest in and to those other parcels of land situated in Garrett County known and described as Military Lots four thousand and ninety eight (ML 4098) and four thousand and ninety nine (ML 4099) contained within the metes and bounds of a tract of land called Western Territory and being the same land which was conveyed to the said Cornelius W. Savage and one John W. Friend by J.H. and R.H. Gordon, Trustees by deed dated the 1st day of October 1877 and duly recorded in Liber W.H.F., No. 3 folio 365 ic., one of the Land Records of Garrett County. The said John W. Friend and wife conveying his interest in said mentioned land, by deed, dated the 8th day of October 1877 and recorded in Liber W.H.F. No. 3, folio 366 ic., one of the Land Records of Garrett County excepting from the operation of this deed all that portioned said last land containing seventy five acres more or less which was conveyed in a deed from the said Cornelius W. Savage and wife to Franklin B. Casteel, dated the 20th day of April 1887 and recorded in Liber W.H.F. No. 12, folio 481 ic., one of the Land Records of Garrett County. Together with all their undivided interests in the improvements and appurtenances belonging to said property. Obituary of John R. Black CUMBERLAND - John R. Black, 88, of Cumberland, \ passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011. Born on Aug. 15, 1922, in Triadelphia, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Henry and Florence Black. John R. married Helen Baldwin, of Patterson Creek, W.Va., on Feb. 28, 1942, in Cumberland. In December 1942, he joined the military service and served his country in the U.S. Army, World War II overseas, until October 1945. A son, John Lewis, was born on June 4, 1943. In 1951, John moved his family to Cleveland, Ohio, where they lived until his retirement in 1982 and then returned to Cumberland. During his professional career, he worked in banking and machine tool manufacturing. As a member of the Assemblies of God, he was involved in many church activities but enjoyed singing in the choir the most. His hobby centered on architectural drawing and design and could be found for hours at his drawing board. John and Helen's love for travel took them on many trips throughout the United States. He is survived by wife of 69 years, Helen B. Black; one son, John L. Black and wife Nancy, of Nashville, Tenn.; 2 grandsons, John D. Black and wife Shelley and Jason R. Black and wife Robin; and 7 great-grandchildren Lauren, Hunter, Joshua, Morgan, Brennan, Hayden, and Lillian Black all of Nashville. Also surviving are one sister, Peg Wigfield and husband the Rev. Hartley, of Winchester, Va. and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Baldwin and Violet Ellis, of Cumberland. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral services will follow in the funeral home at 1 p.m. Interment will be in the Abe Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard. Obituary of Helen B. (Baldwin) Black CUMBERLAND - Helen B. Black, 88, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011. Helen was born on Nov. 27, 1922, in Paterson Creek, W.Va. to the parents of Felix C. and Nancy May Baldwin. Helen married John R. Black on Feb. 28, 1942, in Cumberland. A son, John Lewis Black was born on June 4, 1943. In 1951, the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where they lived and worked until retirement and then returned to Cumberland. During their stay in Cleveland, Helen joined Caterpillar Tractor Company in 1960, where she worked in various budget and accounting departments. After a 22 year career, she retired on Sept. 1, 1982.Her many hobbies included gardening, ceramics, crocheting and knitting. As a member of Assemblies of God, Helen loved teaching Sunday school classes and other activities. John and Helen's love for travel took them on many trips throughout the United States. Helen B. Black is survived by son, John L Black and wife Nancy, of Nashville, Tenn.; two grandsons, John D. Black and wife Shelley, and Jason R. Black and wife Robin; and seven great-grandchildren, Lauren, Hunter, Joshua, Morgan, Brennan, Hayden, and Lillian, all of Nashville, Tenn. Also, surviving is sister, Evelyn Baldwin, of Cumberland, and brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Hartley and Peg Wigfield. About the Author

Patrick Thomas Smith was born in Oakland, Maryland and grew up in

Western Maryland. Pat is a graduate of Frostburg State College (B.S.),

West Virginia University (M.S.) and Texas A&M University (Ph.D.). Pat’s first book

was The Maps and Papers of William H.H. Friend in 2006. Since that time, he has

published nearly thirty books on the Friend Family and is currently working on numerous

additional books. Pat is a member of the Friend Family Association of America and lives

in Frederick, Maryland with his wife, Roxanne and daughter, Emma Gustav Smith.
