Analysis poetry The Deserted House

The deserted house, the speaker tries to tell us about the house which is very old

and miserable. House here is just a symbol of heart of human. Heart is a place that can

make people save and feel good. Because of heart is a centre of human feeling and human

attitude. Every people must feel, whatever he or she feels, but feeling is the basic of life.

The speaker tries to describe the condition of the house which has deserted by the owner.

So, we can see from the poem that the house is really broken. The wild plants here depict

bad power or bad characteristic. So, if the heart has been broke, it will be easy for a bad

characteristic or bad thinking to grow up in our heart.

The speaker seems want to show the feeling some effect from the deserted house.

If the heart has been damaged or broken, the life won’t be alive. The life will be dead. Like

there is no life inside the body, because the core of the life which called heart has been

dead. That describes there is no life there. Like a deserted house here, even a bird can’t fly

above it. It means, it was really there’s no sign of life. It describes the dead heart is in really

in the bad condition. There is a part of a human that can influence all body is heart. So that,

the heart its self is dead, it means, the life is like no life.

The theme of the poem represents a loneliness and emptiness of author. They are

described like the deserted house that has characteristic very frightening and the deserted

house also figures a person that has been deserted. Like the author that had been deserted

by her beloved people. It explains the condition of the author in that time. After the author

suffer of lost, because people around her passed away. So that the author felt that there was

vanished thing of her life. The author felt that the death of her beloved people means she

had no friends anymore. In that way, the author turned to be introvert person. She closed

her social connection and chose to be alone.

Mary was first daughter of Duke Coleridge. Take a look from the author

background we know that her beloved people one by one left her (pass away) The word

Deserted represents Sad feeling of Mary. She limited her self. She closed her social

connection. She Chose to be alone.. She felt afraid if she would feel suffer of lost again.

The poem told the part of things was not complete anymore, and they support the

miserable condition of the house. The author also felt that her life was not complete

because she felt some part of her life went away.

The deserted house is written in alternating lines of anapestic diameter and iambic

trimeter. The rhyme of the poem is abcbdb. It is using repeating word in the beginning

(there’s no smoke… / there’s no glass/ there’s no wood). It is used to describe the house

(the writer’s feeling) from one side to another serially.

The influences upon Coleridge were many and varied. Her interest in the uncanny

and the supernatural which was lifelong (she once took part in a séance with Alfred, Lord

Tennyson) were reinforced by her knowledge of the works of the German Romantics.

Robert Browning, Albert Tennyson, Christina Georgina Rossetti, Elizabeth Barrett

Browning either inspired her to write or directly influenced her work. It is strange perhaps,

that Coleridge never acknowledges the influence of Christina Rossetti. Their work is

similar in many ways, and yet the writers publicly acknowledged by Coleridge are all men.

If she claimed any 'fairy godmothers', she did so in silence and in private.

She lived in Victorian era (1837-1901), when the industrial revolution was

happened. At this time the people of England lived poverty. She However she was life in

luxury as noblemen. She didn’t get impact of it directly. If we read the poem we will found

that her mindset same as the people commonly at that time. A lot of poet made poetry by

comparing people as a thing (house, mansion, star, etc).

This poem represents the author feeling deeply. She uses house as her body and

draw it deathly. According to us when read it for the first time we thought that this people

condition must be very sad, like someone who feel empty. We think, this poem is

interesting and has so many different ways or different main set to show the meaning of

this poem.
