Transcript of Analysis of Soundtrack
SHUTTER ISLAND
The soundtrack is in a minor key, and crescendos slowly to a climax because
the raising of the volume in the track represents the raising of the tension built
up by the soundtrack. Also, people associate the low sound of violins with
spookiness. Also all the sound is non-diegetic and there is no accompanying
video so all it is, is the opening soundtrack and credits. I feel that the
compliments but also contrasts the genre of the film because psychological
thriller films are often very creepy and the music builds the suspense to create
this, however, the music is also just one note and therefore very simple
whereas the film genre often has very complex and complicated story lines. I
feel that the soundtrack is parallel to the clip because the screen is blank just
like how the soundtrack is very blank.
THE SIXTH SENSE
With the sixth sense, it also crescendos the same way as Shutter Island
does but there is a rhythm to the music because it lasts much longer. The
instruments used are violins and pianos because they create the very high
pitched creepy sound which is very slow. Also there is a sudden jump in
the music before it becomes much more flowing because more
instruments come in. I feel the jump is used for the effect of scaring the
audience because of how loud it is. The music is very contrapuntal
because of how it is quite fast and changing compared to the opening
credits which are present on the screen. I feel that the sound represents
the genre because of how complex the tune/beat of it is.
