Analysis of ‘Dawes - Stories Don’t End - In The

The clip opens straight away with a shot of a member of the band, Taylor, guitar in hand, performing.

Located in a studio with a homely feel. He plays the start of their song ‘Most People’ live and the audio

seamlessly changes to the studio version of the track.

A fade leads the clip onto the next shot, a mid shot of the band’s drummer Griffin performing the song which is playing in the clip. This is followed by similar shots of

the two other members of the band also performing the track, though the studio recording continues playing. The over the shoulder shot of the keyboardist (Tay)

helps to reinforce the sense of the audience being a fly on the wall.

The song fades to a low volume and is replaced Taylor talking about the band’s first record in an interview with

the whole band, shown through a shot of all four members. Again, there’s a really homely feel created

by the lighting, sofas and the dog. This shot is followed by a close up of Taylor talking, though not looking

directly at the camera.

Taylor continues talking whilst a few shots of the band recording in the studio are shown for about 10 seconds. A panning shot is used which reinforces the fly on the wall sense, and there are also shots of all four members of the band separately hard at

work. The audience is given the feeling that the band is very much equal and no particular member

is given more screen-time.

There is always the sense that it’s an exclusive behind the scenes

insight into the recording process with a variety of shots used and

from different angles. The shot at the top seems to have been taken

over some equipment, and the second is over the band member’s

shoulder, which helps to show it as slightly more natural as it’s as if he might not even know that the

camera is there.

As the topic of discussion changes slightly to the second record, the clip goes back to a shot of Taylor talking, still not looking at the camera,

but this time the shot is from a different angle. Another close up of Taylor is used. After a few seconds of this shot, the talking continues whilst close-ups of recording equipment are shown. Before the talking stops and the song returns, another shot of them being interviewed is

shown.

Breaking up the interview after Taylor mentions the new record the band are shown performing a track from this record; ‘Most People’ (as they were at the start of the clip.) They’re performing in sync with the studio version which is playing. The shots are transitioned between

using fades.

The previous shot is of Tay and fades into a two shot of him with Taylor, where Tay is now speaking about the record. This is then

followed by a mid shot of him speaking, from a different angle. The track continues playing quietly in the background but fades out before

the end of his speech.

When Tay is finished speaking, the audio quickly changes back to the studio recording of ‘Most People’, firstly with a close up of Taylor playing guitar, and then followed by shots of the

band within the studio.

The clip is continually well lit and therefore quite welcoming, and shows the audience what sorts of things the band get up to in the studio which help the

video serve its purpose as a short behind the scenes documentary. In all three of the above shots a pan is used, following the action in the clip.

There is an amusing (though possibly not on purpose) link to the lyrics of the song which is playing in the next shot.

“Or maybe I make trouble everywhere is followed by Griffin jokingly hitting Tay in the back of the head. This further emphasises the

behind the scenes essence of the clip as the audience see the band messing around in the studio. Again, the shot itself gives the feeling

of being a fly on the wall.

The song fades slightly as a mid shot of Taylor is used to show him speaking about the band’s influences and the progression of their sound

through their three albums. Whilst still speaking shots of the band recording are shown from a variety of angles, as well as close-ups of

equipment. After these shots the same close-up as before is used and then is followed by the same mid shot, whilst Taylor continues to speak.

At a mention of the band a shot of them all in the studio together is shown for the first time in the clip (excluding interview footage), where their

producer is talking with them, though the interview audio continues. The final shot is the same mid shot of Taylor finishing off what he is saying,

and the song that has been playing quietly comes to an end.
