CameraworkClose – ups

Close-ups are used throughout

the video to show the lead

singer with the microphone.

The close up shot gives the

effect of being close to the

lead singer the prop in the shot

connotes the amplification of

the rock music. The close up

shows each detail of the

singers face including his rough

beard which relates to the

genre of music. Establishing Shot

The establishing shot shows the

band as a whole playing the

song, the shot helps the

audience to determine the

setting and the positioning of the

band.

Focus

In this shot focus is used in the camerawork. It shows the microphone clearly and the band members in the background slightly blurred. This attracts the audience to look at the microphone so when the lead singer approaches the microphone it gives the effect that he is coming out of nowhere, its like an element of surprise

Mid Shot

Mid-shots are used in this video to show the artists holing their instruments and how they are playing them, it helps the audience

determine the music genre the way they are playing it, for example if they are playing a guitar fast its most likely a rock song. This shot is also taken at a low angle, looking up to the artist which suggests to the audience that he is in control, that he has authority.

Editing

Shot/Reverse Shot

The main example of shot reverse shots used in this video is when the

lead singer is singing close to the microphone (as seen in the pictures

above). The different shots are edited in a fast paced motion to keep

up to the upbeat tempo of the music. The music video would look dull

with slow editing and a fast song.

Cutting

The cutting in-between the variety of scenes is also faced paced with

all the different flashes of shots gives the effect as if they are memories.

Mise-en-SceneCostume/Appearance The costume of the band members, specifically the lead singer is strongly related to the genre of music, for

example in this video the dark messy hair and rough beard creates are rock star characteristics, sometimes looks and costumes become iconic and are copied by the audience and fans.

Setting

The band members are standing on the top of a building for the setting during most of the song, this connotes the invincibility of the band being so high up as if they are ‘on top of the world’. This makes the audience look up to the band as its quite a cool setting.

LightingThe lighting in this shot is low-key lighting. The mood

created by the low key lighting is quite calm and the shot is shown at the anti climax as the music is slowing down in the video. The dull orange colour is what gives a calm mood. It also casts silhouettes of the band members emphasising them being level with the sky
