The American Institute for Contemporary German Studies strengthens the German-American relationship in an evolving Europe and changing world. The Institute produces objective and original analyses of developments and trends in Germany, Europe, and the United States; creates new transatlantic networks; and facilitates dialogue among the business, political, and academic communities to manage differences and define and promote common interests. Affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University, AICGS provides a comprehensive program of public forums, policy studies, research, and study groups designed to enrich the political, corporate, and scholarly constituencies it serves. AICGS Offers:
Original, independent analyses of the economic, political, historical, and cultural developments and trends that impact transatlantic relations.
Competitive fellowship programs that support individuals working on cutting-edge areas of economic, policy, and cultural research.
High-level events with policymakers and business leaders as well as intimate, off-the-record roundtable discussions.
Analyses ranging from in-depth Policy Reports of a single issue of importance to Germany and the United States to salient essays on current events and relevant topics.
AICGS Pillars:
The Business and Economics Program generates insights into the institutional, political, cultural, and historical factors that shape responses to deepening economic
integration and the challenges of globalization.
The Foreign and Domestic Policy Program explores the factors shaping important domestic and foreign policy debates in the United States, Germany, and Europe as they pertain to German-American relations.
The Society, Culture & Politics Program enhances understanding of the impact of culture on German-American relations and analyzes how cultural beliefs and values, evolving interpretations of historical experiences, and shifting conceptions of national identity shape perspectives and policy responses in the German-American dialogue.

Many experts have criticized economic institutions like the WTO and the IMF as no longer reflecting the realities of the global economy. The Euro Crisis and the halting progress on free trade show the urgent need for new financial and trade arrangements. This panel will present German and American perspectives for reform of international trade and finance. The panelists will analyze the ongoing changes in the banking sector and provide their outlook for the transatlantic economies in 2015.

Panel III:

Architecture of
Finance and Trade:
Managing Risk While
Promoting Growth
The relative decline of the West’s economic power and ongoing tensions and conflict in
eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia have changed geopolitical realities. Shared
norms, economic openness, and multilateral institutions have formed the basis of
international relations for many years. Yet it is unclear whether this order and
institutions like the European Union and NATO will continue to be effective or become
increasingly less relevant in the twenty-first century if they do not adapt to meet new
challenges. This AICGS Symposium will explore Germany and America’s roles in
shaping the emerging global order and discuss new avenues for transatlantic
cooperation.
The deep-seated, historical antagonisms currently bedeviling relations in the former Soviet space, the Middle East, South Asia and East Asia must be addressed by all possible means, including an exchange of knowledge about Europe’s experience with conflict resolution between former enemies. Germany is considered by external actors a model in dealing with historical issues with its neighbors and Israel. This panel will shed light on the contribution Germany can make to international conflict resolution, how German initiatives are viewed by the United States, and how Germany and the U.S. can work together to combine different power assets in dealing with international conflicts.
Changes in the global economy have exacerbated youth unemployment in Europe, the United States, and elsewhere in the world, which threatens to undermine current and future generations’ confidence in democratic institutions. Many in Germany are already questioning the EU project, but its dual system of education is also a model for strengthening Europe’s labor force. This panel will offer both German and U.S. examples for addressing this pressing challenge.
