WGSN reports on the denim directions emerging in Amsterdam's retail sector.

Amsterdam is known for its cutting-edge approach to high-end denim and streetwear. Modern in a down-to-earth way, most of the city's visual merchandising and retail design is devised to create a narrative for the consumer. Apart from brand-owned stores such as G-Star Raw, Blue Blood and Denham, the past year has seen Amsterdam experience a surge in new denim store openings, including Tenue de Nîmes, Jefferson Hotel and Acne store.

� Established by denim fanatics Menno van Meurs and René Strolenberg, denim concept store Tenue de Nîmes opened on November 21 2008 on Elandsgracht, right next to the 9 Streets area

� Dedicated to the home of denim, Nîmes, the shop combines premium denim with fashion labels, books and design

� The retail aesthetic and design was conceived by Joachim Baan

� Tenue de Nîmes boasts the largest denim offer in Amsterdam, selling Levi's Red, Lee, Nudie, G-Star Raw, Acne, Denim Demon, Ijin Material, Momotaro. It is the Benelux agent for the last three, as well as for Whyszeck, Worn By and TST Shoes

� Non-denim brands are mostly Scandinavian like Camilla Norrback, Elvine, Sundaysun, Minimum and Velour. This is mixed with vintage-inspired apparel by Nigel Cabourn, Nike, Tretorn, and Gram shoes, accessories by Sandqvist and Ellen Truijen, Swedish Sav wine and Japanese washing powder

� Tenue de Nîmes also carries its own label, which, focuses on reinventing classics silhouettes

� The store represents a network of artists called Equipe de Nîmes. They host regular in-store exhibitions, run a quarterly paper called Journal de Nîmes and are avid style bloggers

� Jeffrey Sluijzer opened his menswear store Jefferson Hotel opposite Tenue de Nîmes on March 7 2009

� It combines his two favourite trades - fashion retail and hospitality

� The retail design is that of an elegant hotel lobby - right down to a reception desk with bell. The Grey Goose bar serves espresso or "something stronger", with other touches including a lounge library and a spa

� The lobby floor sells high-end men's denim and casualwear from Diesel Black Gold, American Vintage, J.Lindeberg, Vintage 55, Closed, Nerve, Wrangler Blue Bell and Refrigiwear

� The basement level carries high-end streetwear like On Tour, GirlsLoveDjs and Pimpalicious

� Complementary footwear is available from Chuck Taylor, John Varvatos, Nike, adidas Originals, Stamp'D, Jack Purcell, Vans and Gourmet

� The lounge library is filled with Sluijzer's favourite architecture and design books, as well as homeware essentials like scented candles by Memo Paris, Marvis toothpaste, and rare perfumes like Hierbas de Ibiza, Eau d'Italie and Il Profumo
