    Boys & Girls Clubs in Indian CountryAmeriCorps VISTA Partnership

    About Boys & Girls ClubsThe mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) is toenable all young people, especially those who need us most,to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsiblecitizens. Clubs provide A Positive Place where Native Americanyouth can celebrate their culture and community, enjoy healthyfun with their peers, and participate in after-school educationalprogramming under the guidance of responsible adults.

    BGCA began expanding services to Native Americancommunities in 1992. There are now Clubs serving nearly 90tribes in 24 states, for a total of nearly 200 sites. Over 140,000Native American youth, ages 6 to 18, benet from Boys & Girls

    Clubs programs.

    About AmeriCorps and VISTAAmeriCorps is a network of local, state and national service programs that engages more than 70,000Americans each year with service at more than 2,000 nonprots, public agencies and faith-based and

    community organizations. VISTA is the AmeriCorps program that especially focuses on alleviating povertythrough indirect, capacity building service. VISTA members often work behind the scenes in a leadershiprole to empower their agencies with new programs, increased ability to aid clients and greater reach to

    mprove the causes and conditions of poverty.

    About the PartnershipThe partnership is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and administered byBoys & Girls Clubs in Indian Country, Inc. The pilot effort began in March 2010 with the recruitment of 10full-time VISTA members for Boys & Girls Club sites in the Southwest Region. Members serve for one fuyear. Anticipated expansion of the program to sites across the country will occur in the next three to ve

    years.

    Goals of the VISTA program: Develop and expand services to bring people out of poverty.

    Build the capacity of individuals, organizations and communities. Create long-term sustainable change.

    VISTA members receive a post-service education award of $5,350 or end of service stipend of $1500, aiving stipend, health and dental coverage, relocation allowance and travel to pre-service orientation, noncompetitive eligibility for federal employment following the year of full-time service, eligibility for student loforbearance/deferment, and a wealth of new skills in exchange for their service.
