ASHRAE President’s Monthly Brief: As I write this, I am a bit relieved that it is my last
President’s letter, however I feel a certain obliga-
tion to pass on what little wisdom I have gained
to the next generation of ASHRAE leadership. Anyone who has
gone through the Chairs and ranks of the Chapter knows it takes a
full year to figure out what the heck you are supposed to do as Presi-
dent. Well now I know a little more and everyone that follows me
will feel the same.
There are so many facets to ASHRAE that everyone should be in-
volved. If you like government affairs, there is some advocacy that
goes on. If you are interested in a particular topic, maybe a technical
committee is in line. This great organization is built on the hard
work of volunteers who come together for a much greater cause to
advance our industry. I urge you to step up; even just a couple of
minutes a month to help find the next presenter for a meeting or call
a couple members that may have let their membership go. Everyone
has a unique talent and can make a mark on ASHRAE.
Please check out the list on page 11 of volunteers who had a part of
this year’s success and next time you see one of them say, “Thank
You.” I thank you the members for supporting ASHRAE this year
and look forward to a year as Past-President!

2011-2012 ASHRAE RESEARCH Dayton ASHRAE
Contribution Form
2010-2011 saw ASHRAE continue its leadership in developing standards and guidance for the de-sign, operation and maintenance of healthy, energy-efficient buildings. The Dayton Chapter again met their goal to raise money for research, setting a new high. Research dollars help fund the sci-ence behind the handbooks and standards, making sure that guidance has a solid foundation.
This industry gives all of us our livelihood. ASHRAE’s research and educational programs are what keeps our industry and profession on the leading edge and assures its continued existence. Confident that you will recognize the benefits of this investment, I am asking you to help fund fu-ture HVAC&R research and development. Together, we can all make a difference!

Proposed Revisions to Energy Standard for Existing Buildings Open for Public Comment ATLANTA – Public input is being sought into revision of an ASHRAE/IES standard that ad-dresses retrofit of existing residential and commercial buildings to achieve greater energy efficiency. Last year, ASHRAE and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) announced they were revising ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 100-2006, Energy Conservation in Existing Build-ings, to provide greater guidance and a more comprehensive approach to the retrofit of ex-isting buildings for increased energy efficiency. The standard was first published in 1981, and the need for its requirements has grown as more attention is paid to improving energy in current building stock. “Information from the International Energy Agency shows that the building sector is the largest consumer of energy in the United States, using some 40.3 quadrillion Btus of energy in 2002, around 41 percent of total U.S. energy use,” Rick Hermans, chair of the committee writing the standard, said. “Compliance with this standard by every building would reduce that energy use by three quarters.” Public input to the proposed changes is being sought from May 4 until June 18. For more in-formation on how to comment, visit www.ashrae.org/publicreviews. The proposed changes include criteria for energy use surveys and auditing and requirements related to implementation and verification. Appendices are included for life cycle cost analysis procedures as well as identification of potential energy conservation measures. Recognizing that the actual occupancy of the building plays a key role in its performance, the standard established the need for development of an energy management plan and an opera-tion and maintenance plan. “The standard takes advantage of the fact that any building which has been in operation for at least 12 months can quickly determine its performance relative to some benchmark, which is defined in the standard as an energy use intensity tar-get,” Hermans said. “This concept is the new paradigm for energy conscious design, construc-tion and operation of buildings.” The standard provides requirements for the retrofit of existing buildings and addresses ma-jor and minor modifications for both residential and commercial buildings, single and multi-ple activity buildings with variable occupancy periods and identifies an approach for 53 building types in 16 climate zones/sub-zones. The revised standard also identifies energy efficiency requirements for buildings with and without energy targets and provides multiple levels of compliance. ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a building technology society with more than 50,000 members worldwide. The Society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability within the industry. Through research, stan-dards writing, publishing and continuing education, ASHRAE shapes tomorrow’s built environ-ment today. ###

NEWSLETTER
It seems hard to believe that we have almost
completed another ASHRAE year. I want to
start this newsletter by thanking all the
Region V Chapter Presidents and their
Officers for all their hard work this year and
for being a help to me. For all of you that
are moving to new positions in your Chapter
or within the Region or Society, I wish you
well.
We had our Annual President-Elect work
shop at the end of April in Fort Wayne,
Indiana with nine of our Chapters
represented and most of our RVC's in
attendance. I think the meeting went well
and we will be off to a good start for the
2012-13 Society years. We also conducted a
Regional Planning Meeting in April and have
started our Regional planning for the coming
year.
Our Region has been blessed with good
leadership throughout the years and this year
was no exception. We will be losing a few
key people at the end of this year due to their
terms expiring. I want to acknowledge and
thank Doug Zentz (RVC-SA), Doug Fick
(RVC-MP), Tom Ferdelman (Regional
Historian) and Monte Troutman (Regional
Treasurer) for their service to the Society, our
Region and Chapters. Their leadership and
efforts will be missed.
Not to leave a vacuum in our leadership, we
have several new people stepping into our
Regional leadership. Please welcome and
support Russ Marcks (RVC-SA), Bruce
Knapp (RVC-MP), Devin Snowberger
(Regional Historian) and Fred Betz (Regional
Treasurer) as they take over these positions
in July. We look forward to their help in
making our Region stronger. We are also
privileged to have two Director-At-Large
(DAL) in our Region for next year. New DAL
Dennis Wesser will join current DAL Eckhard
Groll on the Society Board of Directors and
be a resource for our Region.
As we complete this year please make sure
your Chapter has submitted all of next year's
Chapter Offices and Committee Chair on the
CIQ on the ASHRAE website (should have
been done by 6/1/12). Also, please make
sure you enter all your Chapters PAOE points
on the website before 6/30/12. Contact me if
you have any questions. We want to make
sure our Chapters are recognized for all their
hard work this year.
We have a great CRC in the planning for this
year in Cleveland, OH. The CRC will be
August 9-11. Please see the attached 'save-
the-date' flyer. The host committee has been
working very hard to make this a fun and
educational event. All Chapter Officers and
Committee Chairs should plan to attend as
well as anyone who is interested in seeing
how the Society and Region work, want to
gain additional continuing education,
celebrate our Chapter accomplishments,
share ideas and have a great time socializing
with fellow members. Consider bringing your
family, the host Chapter has a lot of great
events planned.
As your Chapter prepares for the CRC make
sure you bring forward any Chapter members
who quality for Society awards, any Chapter
members who are interested in serving in a
Regional or Society level position and any
motions your Chapter would like the Region
and Society to consider to improve our
Society at any level.
Before the CRC arrives, the Society Annual
Meeting will take place in San Antonio,
Texas, June 23 thru 27.

I hope many of you will join us for this meeting which
will include the installation of a new Society President,
Officers and Directors, meetings of all the Society
Committees and many technical sessions to enhance
your continuing education,. The meeting is also a great
place to socialize with ASHRAE members from around
the country and the world. As is our custom, we will
have a Region V dinner during the meeting. This year's
dinner will be Monday, June 25 (see the attached flyer
for more information) and is being planned by Rick Zbin
or ARC. Please plan to join us if you are at the
meeting-the dinner is a great time.
I hope everyone has a great Summer, continues their
planning for the coming Society year and plan to attend
the CRC for a great start to next year.
As always, if you have any question, comments or
ideas don't hesitate to contact me or any of the
Regional Officers.
Again, thank you for all you do for your Chapter, our
Region and the Society.

The end of ASHRAE year 2011-2012 is just about
complete and soon we will be thinking of next year’s
criteria. All PAOE points for this year should be added
to the ASHRAE PAOE Forms before June 30th.
This will also end my 12 years as your Region V
Historian. Again the new historian will be Devin
Snowberger of the Fort Wayne Chapter. I mentioned
visiting the new ASHRAE Web page and reviewing
some of the interesting Historical items. In the Society
Web go to; Society Group, Committees, Committees in
Alphabetical Order and Historical Committees. Under
Historical Documents and Regional History, take a look
at the three items on Region V History and listen to the
Leadership Interview with two past Region V ASHRAE
Presidents; Chuck Sepsy and Don Bahnfleth.
In review of this year's History PAOE Points for 2011-
2012, I find four chapters with no points and one with 50
points. All the other chapters have at least reached
minimum. Let’s try to get 100% to reach the minimum
of 100 points. For most of you it only represents turning
in the Points you have already earned.
The CRC this year is in Cleveland. The dates are Aug 9
to the 11th. I know additional information and registration
information will follow. I will be attending the Society
Historical Meeting in San Antonio in July and should
have the final Historical PAOE requirements for 2012 -
2013. Devin and I will be discussing this and many
other items at the CRC History Workshop on Saturday.
100 PAOE points will still be awarded to the Chapter for
the Chapter Historian to attend the Saturday Workshop.

Region V History by: Thomas Ferdelman, Region V Historian
Page 3 REGION V NEWSLETTER June 2012, Volume 3, Issue 7
As of May 25, 2012 Region V has raised $66,000 for
ASHRAE Research. The good news is this is roughly
20% above last year’s pace. The bad news is there is
one month left in the 2011-12 campaign. Many
chapters have their RP Golf Outings in June along with
other events, so I am confident we will get close to our
goal of $115,000.
Society has continued an upward trend also. For the
first time, total donations crossed the $1 million mark in
April. This is 6 weeks ahead of last year’s pace and
represents a 7% increase. Total contributions are again
projected over $2 million which will provide new
ASHRAE research projects (there is a waiting list for
funding).
The following chapters have exceeded last year’s
numbers and are very close to meeting this year’s goals
(along with the High 5 and Challenge awards).
Outstanding work!
Columbus – Sam Allen (RP Chair)
Dayton – Denny Lammlein (RP Chair)
Western Michigan – Dan Rademacher (RP Chair)
As we wrap this year’s campaign up, please mark your
calendars for the following 2012-13 RP year. Society
will cover the transportation costs for the RP chair to
one of these opportunities.
- Aug. 11, 2012 CRC RP workshop in Cleveland
- Sept. 5, 2012 Centralized RP training in Chicago.
Finally, please remember all donations must be in
Society’s hand by June 29th to count toward this year.
Thank you again to all the chapter chairs for their
dedication this year. I offer my support as we complete
our goals.
♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦
These are exciting times for ASHRAE and its
membership. We are showing positive growth in the
region which is due to the excellent work of everyone
but particularly the membership promotion chairs.
Training of the chairs is of utmost importance to our
success so we have added additional training in San
Antonio. Centralized training will provide all of the
building blocks allowing the chairs to operate through
the year. The training offers different tracks to tailor the
conversation for new or returning chairs. There has
been an awesome response with over 75 people
schedule at attend in San Antonio, it has forced the
committee to find additional space. Of the numerous
benefits this affords to our region is a better more
focused conversation at the Chapter Regional
Conference in Cleveland. This conversation can dig
deeply into specific strategic issues for the region and
inter-chapter relations. If your chair was unable to
attend the centralized training there is an alternate time
September 8, 2012 in Atlanta.
The improvement of membership has direct impact to
everyone in the region. A strong membership allows us
to communicate one of our key assets, our technical
knowledge to the community. This expertise in science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is
key for our companies, communities and regions
success. Every community is looking for leadership in
these traits which we nurture.
As the outgoing chair I am so thankful of the great
people that I have worked with over the years. The
dedication of everyone not just to improve ASHRAE but
our industry is inspiring. I cannot think of another
organization run by volunteers and based on the
principles of consensus building that influences its
industry with such strength and caring.

It is hard to believe, but the ASHRAE 2011-12 year is
coming to a close and as we complete one year, it is
time to plan for the next year! On April 27, I attended
the Regional President Elect meeting in Fort Wayne,
Indiana. It was great to see and meet the incoming
Chapter Presidents for the 2012-13 year. During the
meeting I provided a brief overview of the
responsibilities of their Chapter CTTC Committee
Chairman. We look forward to seeing each of the CTTC
Committee Chairs at the 2012 Region V August
CRC….in Cleveland!
I am happy to announce that we have received six
Technology Award applications for our Region V
competition. This is very exciting…great job to the
Akron, Central Indiana, Dayton, and Detroit chapters for
submitting their projects! The submissions will be
judged over the upcoming weeks and the submitters will
be notified of the results.
We encourage anyone receiving a First Place from the
Region V competition to submit to Society for the
Society Competition. A long form application will be
required and the application must include one year of
operating data.
Thank you to all chapters that have utilized the DL
Program this year! We recently conducted our Society
CTTC DL Sub-Committee meeting and once again have
a great line-up of DL speakers for the 2012-13 year…..
please take advantage of this great program!
As we close out the ASHRAE year, please remember to
update your CTTC PAOE points! And finally….see you
in Cleveland, Ohio for our August CRC!

I would like to extend a warm hello to all chapter
members within Region V for the final time as your RVC
for Student Activities. I have had the distinct pleasure to
of holding this officer position for the past four years and
I can honestly say it has been one of the best
experiences I have personally had in my professional
career. I have met great people at all chapters within
Region V and through the society committee work had
enjoyed representing Region V expanding the student
activities for all student chapters. It is my hope that your
chapter is participating in the expanded student
activities provided by ASHRAE. Just as a reminder here
are a few example of how ASHRAE has expanded the
role of student activities in which your chapter could be
participating.
• Post High Grants have increased about 30% in
the past couple of years and this means your
local Post High educational program
(Engineering and/or Technology) could be
awarded as much as $5,000 to create a student
learning opportunity related to HVACR. Within
our Region I know schools have been received
this grant, examples include Purdue, Purdue-
Calumet, and Lawrence Technical University. I
would encourage your chapter to talk to your
Post High partners and help them apply.
• ASHRAE has increased significantly the
amount of resources for local chapters to
participate in the K-12 STEM program and I
know some chapters do a nice job with this. If
your chapter wishes to participate in helping the
K-12 school system open the kids eyes to
Engineering and Technology you may want to
review these resources within the ASHRAE
Student Zone of the website.
• The ASHRAE Student Competition has evolved
into a more real world exercise of sustainability
to push students into ASHRAE Standard 189.1,
life cycle analysis, and holistic building design.
ASHRAE is trying to create a fuller experience
for our Post High students. Within Region V we
have expanded our representation of schools
which are getting involved (this is great), I
encourage all chapters to mentor your local
schools and help them participate.

• The Student Program at the winter meetings
has really expanded. When I first became an
RVC the annual student program for the winter
meeting was only on Sunday and it traditionally
was only about a 5 hour program. ASHRAE
recognized that we (as a society) needed to
encourage our future engineers to be more
involved with society and as such the student
program has been expended to a 3 day
program. The student activities now start on
Saturday and end on Monday of the winter
meetings. I personally have been the chair of
this program for the past 3 years and it has
been very rewarding experiences to see over
450 students from Educational Institutions from
all over the world participate. If you local school
is not participating, you may want to think how
your chapter helps your local school kids to the
winter meeting as the return on this investment
is more than you can measure.
Well I hope to see you all at the CRC this summer and
again I am very proud to have served as your RVC for
Student Activities. Please welcome Russell Marcks as
he will step in as your next RVC for Student Activities. I
know Russ will do a great job. Also, to make life a little
easier for Russ, I would strongly encourage all chapters
to send their Student Activities Chair to the CRC for
training. Having SA chairs attend makes the life of the
RVC much easier and helps create some form of
connection for the both the chapters and the RVC.
Thank you and see you in Cleveland this August.

Support ASHRAE Research Whether it’s improving the work setting in an office building to increase productivity or providing guidelines for emerging technologies, ASHRAE Research helps engineer the world we live, creating better indoor and outdoor environments around the globe.
