FactsFood
Did You Know?By Brian Rosso, R.D.This month I wanted to share with
you some annual food totals on somepopular items purchased at AmericanHouse Senior Living.
Did you know that every yearAmerican House purchases ...
• 31,384 gallons of milk• 81,910 pounds of bananas• 3,262 watermelons• 30,125 pounds of tomatoes• 1,601,592 coffee creamers• 6,657 pineapples• 20,856 cucumbers• 29,040 pounds of cottage cheese• 64,400 saltines• 18,306 pounds of red grapesI hope you found these facts
interesting, and we will continue topurchase the highest quality food.
Remember to HydrateStaying hydrated through your
summer workout is essential to fitnesssuccess. Losing too much water fromyour body through sweat stressesyour cardiovascular system andimpairs performance and mentalacuity. In the two hours before aworkout, drink at least 16 ounces ofwater. During your workout, refreshwith 5 to 10 ounces of water every 15to 20 minutes. Continue to take influids after you’re done exercising.
Fun at the Farmers’ MarketFarmers’ markets have a lot to offer
shoppers: locally grown fruits andvegetables, low prices, and thechance to get out and enjoy the freshair. Follow these tips to get the mostout of your market experience:
Decide when to go. If you want thebest selection on produce, go early inthe morning. But if you’re on abudget, know that many vendors markdown their wares later in the day.
Bring bags. Don’t expect stallsto provide bags for you to carryyour purchases. Canvas shoppingbags, insulated bags, and plasticor paper bags saved from otherstores are smart and environmentallyfriendly choices.
Carry cash. Some vendors willaccept credit or debit cards, but thiscomes at a cost to them and can slowdown a transaction. Bring plenty ofsmall bills to avoid hassles.
Browse before you buy. Do a quicklap around the market before you buyanything. You’ll be able to spot thebest prices and best-looking produceinstead of overpaying for the first freshtomatoes or ripe berries you see.
Ask questions. Want to know whatfertilizers or pesticides were used, ifany? Have questions about the bestway to prepare and eat a particularvegetable? Most farmers at themarket will be excited and proud todiscuss their work.

Happy Father’s DayBeing a father requires strength in
many ways; above all, it requirescharacter. Raising a family is no easytask, of course, but one of trial, frustration, and disappointment. Greatstrength and more than a littlecourage are needed to persevere, tofight discouragement, and to keepworking for the family. In that strength, and with God’s grace, fathers find thepatience to teach, the fortitude toprovide, the compassion to comfort, and the mercy to forgive. All of this isto say that they find the strength tolove their wives and childrenselflessly. And it is above all for thiswondrous, mysterious love thatfathers shower upon their families, and that allows them to ceaselesslyput their families’ needs first.
Our gratitude is not limited toFather’s Day, but remains constant;indeed, there are not enough days inthe year to express it properly. Still, itis fitting that on such a day theAmerican people pause to celebrateall fathers for their loving care. OurNation can only continue to prosper ifour families prosper. Nothing canreplace the family’s role as primenurturer and educator of children, andnowhere are our country’s sharedvalues more effectively transmitted tofuture generations.
So let us thank all fathers on thisday; whether we can do so in personor in prayer. We are perhaps no longerlittle children riding on our father’sshoulders, yet we will forever feel theirfirm and loving guidance through life’schallenges. Take the opportunity tohonor their father and tell them howmuch they are loved and appreciated.
