Wu xing 2. Pigmented beeswax on wood. 18"H x 16"W. $700

"Most of my works are encaustic made of pigmented beeswax on birch wood panels. I have worked in this medium for over two decadesand continue to explore texture and color using abstract expressions. This piece is a series of three that represent balance. In Chinese

philosophy the word wu xing represents the five original ancient elements of wood, earth, fire, metal and water. Each has a type of energythat coordinate with earth energy balance. As the earth fights to maintain its balance in this space of time, these pieces represent the

struggle of the environment of our time."

C. Ellen Hart's paintings investigate found patterns of light, shadow and reflection. As daylight angles through time her source patternsmorph, move and shift challenging the artist to capture the essence of a moment. The source image for Runs Deep was found on the

glassy surface of a backwater pond. The painting contains a perceptual duality: a tangible, distinct moment in time combined with a pre-cise place. Hart exhibits in Texas with Yvonamor Palix Fine Arts and Marta Stafford Fine Arts, and in Michigan with Water Street Gallery.

"As a counselor, an educator, a mom and a traveller, it has always been the creative expressions in these endeavorsthat have continued to draw meinto a more inspired life. I am influenced by travel, and its abilityto bring us out of our comfortzone, and into a realm where wefeel more connected to the natural world and its inhabitants.

My art is a reflection of collectedstories from a lifetime of adventures. It is an expression of a feeling of a place that comes through in my colors and gestures.

I am a largely self-taught artist.Tapping into the emotion of aplace, my intention is for the artto walk the line between what wesee and what we perceive."

"I am a contemporary realist painter. The abstract qualities ofthe image are heightened because of both the pronouncedcropping and substantial use of chiaroscuro. Paradoxically,

the level of abstraction is rooted in intense realism. The piecepushes the dichotomy between realism and abstraction

I paint 'portraits ofpeople' using objects rather thanfaces to explore the human expe-rience, as well as contemporary'portraits of gardens' in a new floral-inspired series that ex-plores and celebrates the bitter-sweet impermanence of life.

I often use humble objects—stones, simple garden flowers—toilluminate the mystery and beautyof all existence.”

Wendy Stefanelli is a New YorkCity based mixed media artist. She currently explores painting, drawing and printmaking. Combining different mediums has been a natural progression of her work. Color, shape and texture serve as inspiration.Process is more important than apreconceived outcome, so risktaking is key. She is drawn to amuted color palette influenced byher environment, rendering herimages mostly abstract.

These two works reflect the natural world completed in an expressive, less representationalway. Blossom, a monotype, unexpectedly revealed itself as its namesake. Asakaze, meaninggentle wind, is a fluid interpreta-tion. Both expose elements of nature in a style unique to theartist's perspective and open tothe viewer's imagination.

I prefer to underscore the similarities common to all humanity."

"I am enamored with steel. Scouring scrapyards, I collected the pieces that would later be used to create asculpture. Each scrap had a story to tell. Some were twisted, some were ancient, discarded by a fabricator, some werenew. Some were beautiful, some ugly. All were rusted.

Scrap steel speaks to me. My sculptures are created as onewould make a collage. I choose pieces from my scrap pilethat work together. After much thought, composing andediting, I weld them into art."

"My path as an artist has traveledfrom being a traditionally-trainedfurniture maker, to incorporatinga more sculptural aesthetic in myfurniture, to finally exploringpure sculpture and fluidly moving between all three. In the midst of this my guiding light is to find a rhythm and poetry that is a confluence oflines, color, texture and graphic imagery that tells a narrative. At its most basic, I think my work is about story telling.”

"I believe art is the transfor-mation of a common realitythrough the artist's memoryand imagination.

The measure of success is the degree to which the work inspires in the viewer a noveland interesting interpretation of that reality."

"I have lived in many stunninglypicturesque parts of the world, but what interests me the most iswhat you can see in nature fromyour porch or your backyard or inyour neighborhood. What youcan see—be it everyday sage-brush or dead leaves or rippleson water or the soft light fallingon nearby hills at the end of aday. That is, what is accessible toall of us wherever we are, notepic, but simply a daily marvel."

"Having my works widespreadinto different techniques andgenres I always had one maindesire—to express the humanemotion. Human emotions, oncecreated, never disappear but coexist in the surrounding space, similar to quantum of the sunlight. They coexist in theWorld, mirroring into, reflectingon and meeting all the other energies of our world at thecrossroads of the Universe. Theymerge to begin a new futureWorld. They are adding a qualityof Humanity to the Universe."

"I discovered a technique called process painting and learnedto create from intuition, not from intellect. It's fun to work

loosely, without intention and allow whatever happens. It can bechallenging to let go and allow! I like the appeal of metallicpowders and a touch of gold leaf always makes it shine."Carolynne exhibits at Jessel Gallery in Napa Valley, CA.

“I am interested in the use of space, color, perspective and visual texture. These works provide a feeling of the earth's

beginning as tectonic plates collided with tremendous force andenergy to form the earth's crust with the continents. Evolutionover time creates an irony of motion and force just beneath the

quiet and serenity we enjoy on the surface.”

"I am obsessed with colorand light. Every piece of artwork I create is an endeavorin pursuing the subtle inter-actions of color, texture andlight. I start with an idea orsketch that intrigues me,and then strive for harmony.

In Tulip Dance I use linesand texture to get the impression of movement. InJanuary Jack Pine the brightlight of winter creates starkshadows. In Sunset Over theCanyon the light of the setting sun creates the contrast of light and dark."

“Icons have always influenced my expressions, both literally and metaphorically. In the culture of my childhood household,Russian icons with lighted candles were found in almost every room. Their power to initiate deep inner dialogue is profound to

me. This series is a meditation upon relationship—with friends, family, the environment and within myself. The paintings are small, totaling forty in all, and flicker from room to room within me. Completed in a little over six months, they are much

like a sketchbook diary in personal iconography.”
