HISTORY
• The American Cancer Society was founded in 1912
• In 1943 Mary Lasker, the wife of a cancer victim, turned to family friend and well-known advertiser to organize a fund-raising campaign that allocates a portion of funds to cancer research for the ACS.
• Today the American Cancer Society is “the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem” through “research, education, advocacy, and service”
OCONEE COUNTY RELAY FOR LIFE KICKOFF• Took place on Monday, October 22, 2012
• Oconee County Civic Center
• Local teens and adults performed songs and dances
• Great way to bring community together
• Spreads word of severity of cancer, also raises money for cancer research
• There are currently 475 members and 35 Relay teams in the Oconee branch of the ACS
CANCER PREVENTION STUDY-3
• Largest study of its kind ever
• First time participants will be asked to give a small blood sample
• Participants must be between 30 and 65 years of age
• Helps researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer
• Athens Regional Health System is testing participants November 7-8th
PAUL FEENER AND THE CABLE EAST TEAM• Paul’s 4th year involved with Relay
• His twin brother died one week after being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009
• His father-in-law has been through chemotherapy 2 times in his fight against Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
• Paul started the Cable East Relay team with family and friends in 2009
• Cable East was the top fundraising large business of the Oconee County Relay for Life this Past year after raising $20,000
• Paul won the Heart and Soul award at the Relay Kickoff
