Event Chair Message
Micheal J. Marlatt Thompson & Colegate, LLP
It is indeed my great honor and pleasure to serve as the event chair for the American Cancer Society Give Cancer the Boot gala on September 19, 2015, at the Riverside Ranchero Equestrian Center. Featuring a unique venue and theme along with a silent and live auction, great entertainment, delectable dinner, and country-western dancing, this festive event is sure to create lasting and wonderful memories.
Our goal is to give cancer the boot and get closer to a world free of this dreaded disease. If you are like most people, cancer has touched your life. As a result of the American Cancer Society’s work, many people who have been diagnosed with the disease are alive today and thriving after their diagnosis and treatment. My wife, Donna, and I are both cancer survivors and are healthy and well today. We are both eternally grateful that the American Cancer Society exists to help all of us through a cancer experience.
I would respectfully request your generosity in joining us to fight against cancer by supporting our efforts as sponsors, underwriters, and/or distinguished guests. In the enclosed packet, you will find an outline of the various opportunities and amenities provided for all levels of sponsorship. The funds raised during this gala support the American Cancer Society’s many programs and services that help local cancer patients and their families with information, day-to-day needs, and emotional support. The Society has also been part of nearly every major cancer research breakthrough in recent history.
There is no other organization in the world that is fighting all forms of this disease on multiple levels: research, education, advocacy, and patient services. The Society has been working to eliminate cancer as a major health problem for more than a century. However, there is still so much work to be done to fight this disease, and we need your help. It is estimated that in 2015, approximately 15,000 people in the Riverside and San Bernardino counties alone will hear the words, “You have cancer.”
The Give Cancer the Boot gala is a way to fight for every person threatened by every cancer in our community. Please kindly join me on September 19, 2015, to help us fight for more celebrations of life. Together, we can make a difference!
Vita Willett has worked for Kaiser Permanente for 36 years, serving as executive director for the Riverside Area for the past eight years and the chief operating officer of the Riverside Hospital for the five years before that. While she worked full time, she also went to school part time, earning her Bachelor of Science in Business and Master of Arts in Business from California State University San Bernardino. Vita also serves as a board member of the Greater Riverside Chamber of Commerce.
Vita married her husband, Tom, in 1984. They are proud of their two daughters and happy to be grandparents to four beautiful grandchildren.
In early 2010, Vita found a lump in her breast. However, because she was used to having fibrocystic breasts, regular exams, and mammograms, she was not concerned, but this lump did not go away.
By April, Vita could no longer ignore the issue, and she went to her primary care physician. The physician sent her to a general surgeon who thought this was breast cancer and ordered an immediate biopsy. Since there was no breast cancer in her family, Vita found this hard to believe.
The biopsy confirmed stage III triple-negative breast cancer. She was immediately scheduled to see an oncologist, and chemotherapy was scheduled to start in two days.
Much of the material Vita received on her cancer and treatment plan was prepared and distributed by the American Cancer Society.
She also attended a Look Good Feel Better® workshop, which taught her how to manage the appearance-related side effects of treatment. The program helped improve Vita’s self-confidence, and she got up every day and worked through her treatment. Vita also credits much of this to the love and support of her husband, Tom, her family, and friends. Her treatment worked, and she was in remission.
In March 2014, Vita’s cancer returned. By July, Vita was back in remission and looking forward to many more years of enjoying her family and grandchildren.
Vita is humbled and honored to be recognized this year as an American Cancer Society Celebration of Life Honoree. It is her wish that her story will inspire women to do monthly breast exams, get mammograms, and take action quickly if something doesn’t seem quite right.
Vita is grateful to the American Cancer Society for the research that went into the treatments that helped save her life and hopeful that someday a targeted treatment will be developed for triple-negative breast cancer.
