There is a certain dynamic in street corner that is so unique it is hard to replicate. The thought for designing this space relies completely on the understanding and development of the street corner. The design of a children’s science museum and floor cafe on this street corner will incorporate the city’s urban language into the visual and spatial experience of the space.

The open floor on the first level provides a buffer to the busy street to the east and threshold from outside to inside. The south side of the design presents a cantilevered overhand to allow a visu-al connection to the space with people on the sur-rounding sidewalk, as well as a way to draw people in to the space. The language of the horizontal levels is very straight forward and allows the occupants to see the full circulation of the museum from exterior and interior views.

The Charleston Institute of Fine Arts will feature both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art pieces. Students will be primarily focusing on drawing, painting, and sculpture, but can work with 3D and visual arts as well. The design will surround be held by a central core, functioning as the main circulation through the galleries.

The central circulation is not only a means of movement from on space to another, but part of the journey. The front face of the building on Calhoun Street will hold the galleries and be open to the street to encourage connection and integration to Marian Square. The right wing of the building and internal side facing the building behind the institute will be the school/education sector of the institute. The concept creates a horizontal visual pull into the center core stair which extends out onto each floor.

Taking from the city’s demographics, a central urban core slowing fading out and into dense residential areas, I used this concept as the basis for the program and experience for the occupants. The gallery spaces (pub-lic) and the institution (private) are almost exclusively separate, but there is a unique juxtaposition of the journey and experience you have while occupy-ing these spaces as you move through the core circulation, allowing one to see the other side through various openings, balconies, and apertures.

The middle wall incor-porated several variations of frosted and transparent glass windows to allow light and visu-al connections between the two stair cases and the occupants within them. The connection cre-ated the unique juxtaposition of experiences one can have in this construct, building on the possible experiences and observations one can have, depending on where they are located. The wall facing the institution side is all glass, some transparent and some translucency, to allow a full vi-sual experience of the process and work going into the art and sculptures being produced, for both students and visitors.

The fabric of the city of Barcelona is the combination of old and new. The city blocks represents the changing relationship between building and city. The renewal of form from the old city to today’s city block creates the unique dynamic of space held by the city. Barcelona Tower looks to portray and understanding of space from one block’s edge to the next.

Barcelona Tower looks to represent this generation’s needs in a hotel. The understanding of function and aesthetics, combined with programmatic elements for human needs, creates the urban hotel. Initial integration of personal room space, comfort, leisure, and entertainment helps to constructs a compelling spatial experience for all people who encounter the hotel.

An important part of Barcelona Tower is the individualization of private space for all guests. The construction of integration of the facade was vital to encompass both formal and functional qualities.

Each facade piece doubles as an operable shade for each room, held together by an underlying structure on a moveable track. Therefore, all guests are able to personalize their experience while creating a better understanding with the construction of the building. This tower illustrates a contrast of heavy to light materiality. The density of the concrete core with steel structural elements framing the nodes of space creates a balance form; in addition to the mesh shading system, constructing a semi-transparent veneer holding the space.

This concept compares the experience between types of people in the program. The separation and interaction of the floors create the overall concept of comparison of experience. The first floor is occupied by researchers and science personnel, while the second floor is for education and visitation. Occupants going to the classroom area must pass through the research and area; although this is the same space the researches occupy, they experience it differently at a difference level of the building.

This project was designed as a conceptual structure used as the transition point from rural to urban in St. Martin’s Lane, located in London, England. This city’s historical presents in London creates an exciting context for transition, because as one can assume this road experienced several transitions and changes and continues to inspire transition in its neighborhood today.

Sustainable Davie websiteSummer 2014Field Experience

Most of my time spent in the Planning and Zoning Office in the Town of Davie I worked on the updating and completing of the Town’s green web page “Sustainable Davie”. A top priority for updating the website was to create a more organized and efficient page that included everything about the Town’s sustainability efforts on one page. The existing website has a lot of useful information, but it is hard to read and navigate through, making it unappealing to readers. I assessed the content on the Town’s current green website, organized it, and added topic categories such as Energy, Water, and Transportation.

This new design features a grid format that is user-friendly and easy to navigate, and allows everything concerning the Town’s sustainable efforts and initiatives on one page. This site includes 10 portals for different sustainability topics as well as what the Town is doing regarding sustainable development, that can be accessed from the main page, the topics are: Awards and Recognition, Community Outreach, Energy and Air Quality, Farming and Rural Lifestyle, Davie Recycling, Sustainability Action Plan (SAP), Town of Davie Green Initiatives, Town of Davie Trails, Public Transportation, and Water Conservation.
